LG SK8000: At First Glance

We cannot deny the fact that LG has been consistent in delivering high-quality televisions for the past few years. Due to this, the brand has become one of the most trustworthy television manufacturers in the world.

So, in other to continue with the great legacy of delivering high-quality televisions, LG released the SK8000. The LG SK8000 is a 4K television for mixed usage.

Basically, this television offers adequate performance that both movie lovers and gamers will appreciate. However, the TV comes with some questionable drawbacks that might make potential buyers think twice.

Enough with the chit-chat about the LG SK8000, let us get to know the television even more in subsequent sections below.

LG SK8000: Design, Dimensions, and Weight

As with most LG televisions, the LG SK8000 comes with an excellent and attractive design. To begin with, this television features thin bezels surrounding its display screen.

These bezels are composed of metal and have a matte-black texture. Unfortunately, there are no logos or inscriptions on any part of these bezels.

That said, the LG SK8000 comes with a metallic stand that has a curved shape. Moreover, due to the metallic build of this stand, it provides good and sturdy support for the television.

Therefore, the television will barely wobble even when knocked with force. In addition to its sturdiness, this television’s metal stand has a stunning silver finish and features a single hook at its back.

This hook serves as a cable management system.

Having said all that, let us now discuss the back of the television. The LG SK8000 comes with a metal back panel that features four VESA-compatible holes for wall-mounting the television.

Impressively, this television’s back panel isn’t thick at all. Therefore, if the television is eventually wall-mounted, it will look awesome and won’t bulge out of the wall even a bit.

For the dimensions and weight, the LG SK8000 measures 1237 x 248.4 x 794 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 17599.3 g. Even for a 55-inch television standard, this LG television is really heavy.

In fact, the LG SK8000 weighs significantly more than all the televisions in its category. For example, the TCL 55S403 and Hisense H8F weigh 13380 g and 13517.0 g respectively.

In conclusion, the LG SK8000 features a sleek design as well as an all-metallic build. Moreover, this television comes with a cable management system that you will barely see on most televisions.

However, this LG television weighs more than most 55-inch TVs out there. Therefore, in this design review section, I will rate the LG SK8000 an eight out of ten.

LG SK8000: Display Features and Picture Quality

For display, the LG SK8000 employs a 55-inch LED display with a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution. Due to its 4K resolution, this television’s display should be able to render colorful and realistic picture quality.

Impressively, apart from its 4K resolution, this display is made with an IPS panel. Therefore, the display offers excellent and wide viewing angles.

As a result, the picture quality will not lose accuracy when viewing the LG SK8000 from the sides or extreme angles. However, a major disadvantage of IPS panel displays is that most of them offer a poor contrast ratio.

Unfortunately, the LG SK8000’s display isn’t an exception as it comes with a poor contrast ratio of 1,098:1. Wondering what a display’s contrast ratio is?

The contrast ratio is the proportion between the brightest white and the darkest black of a display. Furthermore, the contrast ratio of a display is critical in determining the display’s dark level.

To be more specific, a display with a high contrast ratio will be able to produce deep black. However, a display with a poor contrast ratio such as the LG SK8000’s display’s 1,098:1 will not be able to produce deep blacks.

In other words, blacks on the display will look more like gray. As a result, the LG SK8000 isn’t the best television for watching movies with lots of shady or dark scenes.

In addition to that, this LG television isn’t ideal for dark room viewing. On a good note, the LG SK8000’s display supports local dimming which helps in enhancing its contrast ratio.

Therefore, with the help of local dimming, blacks on the LG SK8000’s display will look darker than they would without local dimming. Hence, improving and making up for the display’s poor contrast ratio.

Impressively, the LG SK8000’s display doesn’t only support local dimming, this display also supports HDR. To give more details, the television’s display supports various HDR (High Dynamic Range) formats including Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG.

In case you’re curious, HDR is a picture technique that enhances the brightness and range of colors of a display. Basically, when an HDR television is viewing HDR-supported content, the display’s picture quality will be very sharp, realistic, and lifelike.

For context, HDR-supported content or movies can mostly be found on streaming applications like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Sadly, despite supporting HDR, the LG SK8000’s display offers average brightness.

To be more specific, this display comes with a maximum brightness of 271 nits. Therefore, with this maximum display brightness, the LG SK8000 may not be particularly good for watching movies in bright areas.

However, I can assure you that this maximum brightness is enough for you to enjoy viewing the television in a moderately-lit or dimly-lit room.

With all that being said, let us discuss the display’s response time. The LG SK8000’s display offers an outstanding response time of 13 milliseconds.

As a result, the LG SK8000 is ideal for viewing fast-motion content due to the fact that there will be minimal blur trails. In case you are wondering, examples of fast-motion content include action/fighting movies and sports.

For the record, a display’s response time is the amount of time that it takes the display to shift from one color to another. In addition to its impressive response time, the LG SK8000’s display has a low input lag of 14.2 milliseconds.

Thus, the LG SK8000 is ideal for playing video games. For clarity, input lag is the time it takes a display to register a signal input from an external source such as a wireless gamepad.

Thus, the lower the input lag, the better the gaming experience.

In conclusion, asides from its poor contrast ratio and average brightness, there is basically nothing to hate about the LG SK8000’s display. Besides, the display is ideal for viewing fast-motion content and playing games thanks to its impressive response time and low input lag.

Therefore, I will rate the LG SK8000 an eight out of ten in this display review section.

LG SK8000: Sound Features

For the sound department, the LG SK8000 employs a pair of 2-channel 20-watt speakers. These speakers are extremely loud and offer excellent sound quality.

Therefore, due to the loudness of the speakers, the LG SK8000 is ideal for large room viewing. In addition to its loud set of speakers, this television comes with a subwoofer.

Consequently, the television will be able to produce a significant amount of bass. As a result, bass-heavy movies will be pleasant to watch on the LG SK8000.

That said, the LG SK8000’s speakers are capable of delivering clear and understandable dialogue. Thus, when watching a movie on the television, you will be able to clearly hear and distinguish the conversation between multiple characters.

As a means of enhancing its sound quality and production, the LG SK8000 comes with Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos is a sound technology developed by Dolby laboratories that allows an audio device to produce a cinematic sound quality.

Unfortunately, despite featuring Dolby Atmos and a subwoofer, the LG SK8000 offers a mediocre distortion performance. This is evident through the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) test result of the television.

Briefly, the THD test is a sound test that measures the total amount of distortion that an audio device can produce. Furthermore, a score of 1% or less on this test indicates that the sound device produces minimal distortion.

However, if the score is greater than 1%, that means the sound device is capable of producing a significant amount of distortion. Sadly, the LG SK8000 delivered a score of 1.040% on the THD test.

Although this score is very close to 1%, the television will still produce a significant amount of distortion at a maximum volume level. However, at a moderate or medium volume level, the distortion that the television will produce should be minimal.

Just to be clear, distortion in this context is the deformation of audio frequencies, resulting in the creation of disturbing and harsh sounds.

In conclusion, the LG SK8000 offers a brilliant pair of speakers that produce good sound quality and are loud enough. However, this television generates a significant amount of distortion at a max volume level.

Notwithstanding, I believe the LG SK8000 deserves an eight out of ten rating in this sound review section.

LG SK8000: Ports and Connectivity Features

Port-wise, the LG SK8000 comes with a good number of ports. However, the majority of the ports are directly on the back of the television while a few are on the right side.

Thus, when the television is wall-mounted, users will not be able to access the majority of the ports easily.

That said, the few ports that you will find on the right side of the LG SK8000 are two HDMI ports and a single USB port. Moreover, these HDMI ports support ARC (Audio Return Channel).

Therefore, by using either of the HDMI-ARC ports, you will be able to connect a soundbar to the television. Having mentioned the ports on the right side of the television, now let us discuss the ones directly on the back of the TV.

Directly on the back of the television, there are two more HDMI ports, two USB ports, and an Ethernet port. Also, you will discover a digital optical audio out, a composite video input, and an RF port on the television’s back.

For wireless connectivity, the LG SK8000 features Bluetooth 4.2 and a built-in 802.11 ac WIFI.

Moving on, the LG SK8000 comes with an LG magic remote control. This remote is made of plastic with curved edges and features a glossy-black finish.

Also, a round-shaped navigation button with a scroller in the center can be found on this remote. In case you are curious, the scroller is for controlling a pointer on the television’s display.

In addition to the navigation button, the LG SK8000’s remote features two dedicated buttons for Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. Also, this remote comes with a full number pad as well as a built-in microphone.

This built-in microphone allows for voice input via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

In conclusion, the LG SK8000 has enough ports and a voice-supported magic remote. Therefore, I will be rating the LG SK8000 a nine out of ten in this ports and connectivity review section.

LG SK8000: Smart Features

For the operating system, the LG SK8000 makes use of the webOS version 4.0. This operating system has a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate, lag-free, beautiful, and ad-free.

Furthermore, the webOS comes with quite an amount of major pre-installed streaming services and applications. Some of the streaming services that you will find on the operating system include HBO, HULU, YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix.

Besides, if the pre-installed streaming services aren’t enough, you can easily download more streaming services from the LG content store. However, it is worth noting that the LG content store offers limited streaming services compared to the Google Play Store or Samsung Store.

In summary, the LG SK8000 comes with a user-friendly and lag-free operating system. Also, this operating system allows the television to have access to major streaming apps like Netflix.

For these reasons, I will be rating the LG SK8000 a nine out of ten in this smart features review.
