LG Gram 2-in-1: At First Glance

LG has stuck with its Gram laptop formula for the production of this 2-in-1 laptop. This is no surprise considering the success of its Gram line up.

As a result, the LG Gram 2 in 1 doesn’t entirely look different from the existing Gram laptops. Although, as expected this laptop comes with a 360-degree hinge to make it a 2-in-1 convertible laptop.

However, a few sacrifices had to be made to turn this laptop into a convertible. One of these sacrifices is the display’s quality that has been reduced due to the introduction of a touchscreen.

LG Gram 2-in-1: Design, Dimension, and Weight

The first obvious thing about this laptop is its nearly complete similarities with the non-convertible Gram laptops. Clearly, LG didn’t do away with its design style when designing the LG Gram 2 in 1.

LG Gram 2 in 1 has the familiar dark silver nano-carbon magnesium body in all Gram laptops. Hence, this laptop still looks premium and very modest in its design.

However, its nano-carbon body still feels like plastic. Surprisingly, this fragile-looking laptop is very tough.

After all, this LG Gram 2 in 1 laptop has passed seven MIL-STD-810G certification tests. One of the measures LG took to ensure this laptop’s durability is the coating of its display with Gorilla Glass.

Its hinge also feels very sturdy. This sturdiness makes it easy to use the LG Gram 2 in 1 in tent mode, tablet mode, or stand mode.

Like the other Gram laptops, the LG Gram 2 in 1 is also very light. It weighs 1147.5 g and measures 325 x 210.8 x 17.7 mm.

In comparison, this laptop is lighter than the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2, the Lenovo Yoga C930, and the HP Spectre Folio. They weigh  1283 g, 1380 g, and 1470 g respectively.

Furthermore, the LG Gram 2 in 1 has a very comfortable keyboard despite its minimal key travel. This is possible because its keys have a good tactile feel to them.

In terms of port selection, the LG Gram 2 in 1 offers limited ports. With this convertible, you get 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB Type C port, 1 HDMI port, and a headphone jack.

In conclusion, the LG Gram 2 in 1 scores an eight in this review for its cool and premium design.

LG Gram 2-in-1: Processor (CPU) Performance

LG equipped the LG Gram 2 in 1 with a quad-core Intel Core i7-8565U. This processor has a base frequency of 1.80 GHz and a maximum frequency of 4.60 GHz.

While this laptop may be very light, it is definitely not light on performance. By all standards, the CPU performance of the LG Gram 2 in 1 didn’t disappoint.

The LG Gram 2 in 1 easily handles regular computing operations like word processing, sending emails, and web browsing. Additionally, this laptop is also powerful enough to handle more demanding tasks as long as they aren’t too graphically intensive.

Moving on to some CPU tests, Gram 2 in 1 scored 15,945 points on a Geekbench 4 overall performance test. It surpassed the premium laptop average of 12,860.

Even the Lenovo Yoga C930 and the HP Spectre Folio were outmatched by the LG Gram 2 in 1. The Yoga C930 scored 14,739 while the Spectre Folio scored 8,090.

In conclusion, the LG Gram 2 in 1 scores an eight in this review for its impressive CPU performance.

LG Gram 2-in-1: Memory (RAM) Performance

LG equipped Gram 2 in 1 with a 16 GB DDR4 RAM. This laptop’s 16 GB RAM capacity is impressive considering that you don’t get this much memory with the standard 14-inch Gram laptop.

As a result of its 16 GB RAM, the LG Gram 2 in 1′ RAM performance didn’t disappoint.

With this 16 GB RAM, the LG Gram 2 in 1 eased through most of the tests that were conducted. It easily streamed a movie on Netflix with 23 Chrome browser tabs opened.

Moreover, about three of those browser tabs were streaming YouTube videos. With all of these operations, the LG Gram 2 in 1 didn’t slow down or lag at all.

Hence, it scores an eight in this review for its good multitasking power.

LG Gram 2-in-1: Storage Options and Performance

LG ships the LG Gram 2 in 1 with a 512 GB M.2 SSD. Also, like many other laptops, you also get a microSD card reader for storage expansion.

In terms of its storage performance, the LG Gram 2 in 1 performs averagely. On a CrystalDiskMark test, it recorded an average read speed of 530 MBps and an average write speed of 502 MBps.

On a file transfer test, the LG Gram 2 in 1 took 14 seconds to copy 4.97 GB of multimedia files at a transfer rate of 390 MBps. It came short of the 524 category average copy rate.

However, the LG Gram 2 in 1 beat the Surface Laptop 2’s 201 MBps copy rate. It also beat the Yoga C930’s 340 MBps copy rate.

Therefore, the LG Gram 2 in 1 scores a seven in this review for its relatively good storage speed.

LG Gram 2-in-1: Graphics Card Performance

The LG Gram 2 in 1 feature an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU. This GPU has a base frequency of 300 MHz and a boost frequency of 1150 MHz.

Unlike its CPU and RAM performance, the LG Gram 2 in 1’s GPU performance isn’t very impressive. In fact, most of this laptop’s competitors surpass it in terms of graphics performance.

As a result, the LG Gram 2 in 1 isn’t suitable for heavy gaming. Nevertheless, it can push through some low graphically demanding games.

On a gaming test, the LG Gram 2 in 1 played Dirt 3 at 49 FPS. However, it couldn’t outperform the Surface Laptop 2 that played the same game at 82 FPS.

Hence, it scores a six in this review for its below-average gaming performance.

LG Gram 2-in-1: Battery Life and Performance

LG equipped Gram 2 in 1 with a 4-Cell 72 Wh Lithium-ion battery. Like the other Gram laptops, the LG Gram 2 in 1 offers a long battery life. It can last you throughout an entire workday.

On a continuous web surfing test, the LG Gram 2 in 1 lasted 11 hours 30 minutes. It exceeded the premium laptop average of 8 hours 35 minutes.

The LG Gram 2 in 1 also outlasted most of its competitors. It lasted longer than the Yoga C930 that lasted 8 hours 10 minutes and the Surface Laptop 2 that lasted 9 hours 25 minutes.

Overall, this laptop’s battery life is excellent. Therefore, it scores a nine in this review.
