LG Gram 15: At First Glance

It is already a common notion that laptops with 15-inch screens are usually too bulky compared to the 13-inch and 14-inch laptops. In most cases, 15-inch laptops are not considered portable.

For instance, the Dell XPS 2-in-1 laptop is one of those 15-inch laptops that is not very light. Although the Dell XPS 2-in-1 is an excellent laptop, it is not portable due to its weight and size.

However, the LG Gram 15 completely deviates from that norm. It is an extremely lightweight 15-inch laptop that still features high-end specs.

LG Gram 15: Design, Dimension, and Weight

As I highlighted in the last section, the LG Gram 15 is an astonishingly light laptop. You will be amazed by how light it feels when you first pick it up.

It weighs 1095 g and measures 358.1 x 228.6 x 17.7 mm.

Despite its 15-inch screen, this laptop weighs less than many 13-inch laptops. For instance, the LG Gram 15 weighs less than the Dell XPS 13 that weighs 1200 g.

Though the LG Gram 15 is bigger than most Ultraportables, it is not really a concern because it is much lighter than most of them. However, this laptop feels a bit fragile when a little pressure is exerted on it.

As a result, the LG Gram 15 feels less premium than it ought to. However, LG claims that this laptop has passed seven MIL-STD-810G certification tests.

Moving further to the laptop’s design, you get a simple design with very few changes from its previous model. Furthermore, like its previous model, the LG Gram 15 is constructed with nano-carbon magnesium – after all, it is the major factor behind the LG Gram 15’s lightweight.

Moreover, the LG Gram 15’s keyboard remains spacious with very comfortable keys. The touchpad also remains very sensitive and responsive.

Despite its thin form factor, the LG Gram 15 offers a good selection of ports. You get 3 USB 3.1 porst, 1 USB 3.1 Type C port and 1 USB Type C (RJ45 gender).

In addition to that, you also get 1 HDMI port and 1 Thunderbolt 3 port.

Overall, the LG Gram 15 has a simple and classy design. However, you will have to settle for a less premium build.

But then, it is a fair price to pay for a laptop as light as it is. Therefore, I rate LG Gram 15 an eight in this review.

LG Gram 15: Processor (CPU) Performance

The LG Gram 15 packs incredible power despite its delicate look. This is made possible by the 8th-generation processor that powers the laptop.

The LG Gram 15 is equipped with a quad-core Intel Core i7-8565U processor. This processor has a base frequency of 1.80 GHz and a maximum frequency of 4.60 GHz.

With this high-end processor, the LG Gram 15 can handle both regular and heavy computing operations. Web browsing, document editing, sending emails, etc were all light work for the LG Gram 15.

Moreover, there was no issue at all when I ran heavy-duty applications like Adobe Photoshop.

Moving on to benchmark tests, the LG Gram 15 scored 12,405 points in the multi-core Geekbench 4 processor test. This is an impressive result but the LG Gram 15 couldn’t surpass the Dell XPS 15 and the Apple MacBook Pro‘s scores – they scored 14,970 and 15,973 respectively.

Nevertheless, the LG Gram 15 is rated an eight in this review for its excellent processing power.

LG Gram 15: Memory (RAM) Performance

The LG Gram 15 comes with 16 GB DDR4 RAM. This laptop has 2 RAM slots – therefore, you can upgrade the RAM size with one of the slots.

Thanks to its 16 GB RAM, the LG Gram 15 offers very impressive RAM performance. You can get a lot of document editing work done while running several programs simultaneously.

On a RAM test, the LG Gram 15 ran smoothly with 25 Chrome browser tabs while I was streaming an album on SoundCloud. Surprisingly, the LG Gram 15 didn’t stutter nor lag throughout these operations.

Furthermore, the LG Gram 15 continued to run smoothly even while I switched between the browsing pages and some programs I was running in the background.

Overall, the LG Gram 15 is surprisingly great at multitasking for a laptop as skinny and light as it is. Therefore, I rate it an eight in this review.

LG Gram 15: Storage Options and Performance

LG offers a 1 TB M.2 2280 SSD for the LG Gram 15’s storage. In addition to that, you also get a microSD card reader for storage expansion.

Even though the LG Gram 15’s storage speed is not slow, its storage speed is a bit disappointing. LG clearly prioritizes capacity over speed.

The storage speed test that was carried out backs this notion. On a CystalDiskMark test, the LG Gram 15 recorded a sequential read speed of 564 MBps and a sequential write speed of 536 MBps.

In comparison, the LG Gram 15 is nowhere near the Dell XPS 15 in terms of storage speed. The Dell XPS 15 recorded a sequential read speed of 2269 MBps and a sequential write speed of 1198 MBps.

In conclusion, the LG Gram 15 scores seven in this review because of its average storage speed.

LG Gram 15: Graphics Card Performance

The LG Gram 15 features an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU. This GPU has a base frequency of 300 MHz and a boost frequency of 1150 MHz.

Unfortunately, the LG Gram 15 disappoints in this aspect. The absence of a dedicated VRAM in this laptop doesn’t help its gaming performance.

Nonetheless, this laptop can offer playable frame rates in old title games. However, you will need to lower the graphics settings in order to get playable frame rates in most modern title games.

On gaming performance tests, the LG Gram 15 was able to play Rise of The Tomb Raider at 15 FPS on medium settings. Moreover, it ran Fortnight at a higher 20 FPS rate on the same medium settings.

Obviously, the LG Gram 15 is not suitable for high-end gaming. Therefore, I rate its GPU a six in this review.

LG Gram 15: Battery Life and Performance

The LG Gram 15 comes with a 4-Cell 72 Wh Lithium-ion battery. LG claims that this laptop can last up to 18.5 hours.

Due to the numerous unfulfilled promises we’ve gotten from manufacturers, I’ve learned not to entirely trust their claims. However, it is slightly different in this case.

In our battery life test, the LG Gram 15 offers a battery life that is a bit close to the numbers advertised by LG. On a web-surfing battery test with medium screen brightness, the LG Gram 15 lasted 15 hours 30 minutes.

In comparison, this battery life performance is much better than the Dell XPS 15’s 8 hours 10 minutes.

Therefore, based on its battery life, the LG Gram 15 gets an eight in this review.
