LG 86UM8070PUA: At First Glance

LG has built a solid reputation for delivering high-quality televisions over the years. Due to this, they have lots of fans and lovers all around the world.

Therefore, in 2019, the brand released the LG 86UM8070PUA, an 86-inch television that offers 4K resolution. However, the price tag on this television is just as large as its display screen.

To be more specific, the LG 86UM8070PUA comes with a $2,999.99 price tag when I wrote this review in February 2022. With this heavy price tag, will this television offer enough performance and features to convince potential buyers?

There is only one way to discover an answer to that question – you have to read on!

LG 86UM8070PUA: Design, Dimension, and Weight

When it comes to design, LG is known for producing TVs with great looks. Specifically, most of their high-end TVs such as the LG 86UM8070PUA come with stunning designs.

To offer a detailed description, the front side of this TV would be a perfect place to start. On the front of the LG 86UM8070PUA, you will find thin bezels surrounding its display.

These bezels are made of plastic with a matte-black finish. Moreover, there is an “LG” logo with a distinct white finish in the center of the bottom bezel.

This logo gives the LG 86UM8070PUA an appealing look and also serves as a means of brand identification. Having said all that, now let us discuss the back of the television.

To start with, the back of the LG 86UM8070PUA features a metallic plain black panel. Due to the huge size of this television, there are holes that can accommodate a 600 X 400 VESA mount.

However, there isn’t a cable management system at the back of this television. Considering the heavy price tag of this television, I was actually expecting a cable management system but LG disappointed us.

As a result, one would need to manually arrange cables at the back of the television to make them look organized. On a positive note, the LG 86UM8070PUA comes with a pair of metallic legs.

Impressively, despite the TV’s stature, these legs are sturdy enough to hold the television in place. However, each of these legs is positioned very close to the edges of the television.

Therefore, you will need a table fairly larger than its size to place the television on. Having said all that, let us move on to discuss the television’s size and weight.

The LG 86UM8070PUA measures 1943 x 93.9 x 1117 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 44179 g. I know that with 44179 g, this television is fairly heavy, but what else exactly were you expecting from an 86-inch television?

When compared with another LG television (LG 86UN8570AUD), the LG 86UM8070PUA weighs more. To be more specific, the LG 86UN8570AUD weighs 41794 g.

In conclusion, the LG 86UM8070PUA offers a rather appealing design with slim bezels and sturdy legs. However, this television doesn’t come with a cable management system

Therefore, in this design review section, I will offer the LG 86UM8070PUA an eight out of ten ratings.

LG 86UM8070PUA: Display Features and Picture Quality

Talking of the display, the LG 86UM8070PUA comes with an 86-inch display. This display is made with an IPS panel and also features a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution.

First and foremost, due to the 4K resolution, this display should deliver realistic and detailed picture quality. Secondly, due to its IPS panel, the display offers wide viewing angles.

Thus, even when viewing the television from extreme angles or off-center, the display’s realistic picture quality won’t drop a bit.

In addition to this IPS panel and 4K resolution, the LG 86UM8070PUA’s display comes with an impressive contrast ratio. To be more precise, this display features a contrast ratio of 4173:1.

As a result of its impressive contrast ratio, the television’s display should be able to produce deep blacks. Essentially, blacks on the display will look dark as they are supposed to be without tending to look grayish.

Therefore, the LG 86UK6570PUB is ideal for dark room viewing and watching movies with lots of dark scenes. In case you are wondering, the contrast ratio is the difference between a display’s brightest whites and darkest blacks.

Sadly, LG failed to make the 86UM8070PUA’s display compatible with local dimming. However, the local dimming feature isn’t particularly important since the display already has an impressive contrast ratio.

However, it would still be nice if the display supports local dimming. Just to be clear, the local dimming is a technique that boosts the contrast ratio of an LED/LCD display by dimming backlight zones.

Basically, with local dimming, blacks on an LED/LCD display will look deeper/darker than they would without local dimming.

To make up for not being compatible with local dimming, the LG 86UK6570PUB’s display supports HDR (High dynamic range). To give more details, this television’s display supports numerous HDR formats such as HDR 10, HLG, and Dolby Vision.

For clarity, HDR is a picture technique that enriches the colors accuracy and brightness of a display when viewing HDR-supported content. For context, streaming services such as HULU, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix are mostly where you would find HDR-supported content.

That said, the LG 86UM8070PUA’s display comes with an average brightness which is very poor for a $2500+ television. To be more specific, this display features a maximum brightness of just 270 nits.

Although this max brightness is enough for viewers to enjoy watching the LG 86UM8070PUA in a moderately-lit or dark area. However, it might not be enough for viewing the television in bright rooms.

Moving away from the brightness, now let us discuss the input lag of the LG 86UM8070PUA’s display. To begin with, this television’s display features an input lag of 15 milliseconds, which is “low” enough for gaming.

If you are wondering, input lag is the amount of time that it takes a display to respond to signal input. Moreover, signal input may come from a gamepad or remote control.

Thus, the lower the input lag of the display, the better the display’s performance and gaming experience. Thankfully, the LG 86UM8070PUA’s display comes with a low input lag which makes it very much suitable for gaming.

Impressively, this display isn’t just ideal for gaming but also suitable for viewing fast-motion content. This is due to the fact that the display has a fast response time of 8.9 milliseconds.

With such a fast response time, the LG 86UM8070PUA’s display would be able to view fast-motion content like sports without delivering noticeable blur trails. If you are curious, response time refers to the time a display takes to transition from one color to another.

To sum it all up, asides from its average brightness, I don’t think there is anything to dislike about the LG 86UM8070PUA’s display and picture quality. Therefore, there is nothing stopping me from rating the LG 86UM8070PUA a nine out of ten in this display and picture quality review section.

LG 86UM8070PUA: Sound Features

Based on how large the LG 86UM8070PUA is, one would expect impressive and loud sound production from the TV. Thankfully, the television doesn’t disappoint as its features a pair of 20-watt speakers that are very loud.

Asides from their loudness, these speakers offer impressive sound quality as well as clear dialogue. Just to be clear, dialogue is the conversation between two or more people in a TV show or film.

Impressively, the LG 86UM8070PUA produces a decent amount of bass for a TV that lacks a subwoofer. Thus, you should be able to enjoy watching movies with not-too-much bass on the television.

However, if you are a “bass person”, you might consider purchasing a subwoofer to support the television’s decent bass production.

Moving on, the LG 86UM8070PUA offers an impressive distortion performance. Trust me, this isn’t just a claim as it has been proven through the television’s THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) test result.

Basically, the THD test is an evaluation that measures the amount of distortion that an audio device is capable of producing. Moreover, in this test, the acceptable score is 1% or less.

So, any result above 1% simply means the audio device produces a significant and noticeable amount of distortion. Fortunately, the LG 86UM8070PUA was able to score 0.8% on the THD test.

Thus, even at the maximum volume level, distortion will not be noticeable on the television. For clarity, distortion in this context refers to the alteration of original sound frequencies, resulting in the production of less-pleasant sounds.

Based on the facts above, I believe the LG 86UM8070PUA deserves nothing less than an eight out of ten in this sound review section.

LG 86UM8070PUA: Ports and Connectivity Features

Talking about the ports, the LG 86UM8070PUA offers a reasonable amount of ports that would meet most users’ needs. However, like most LG televisions I have reviewed, all the ports are located on the back of the TV.

Due to this, if the television is mounted on the wall, accessing these ports might not be as easy as you think. Having stated the locations of the ports, let us now discuss the various types of ports that the television has.

First and foremost, the LG 86UM8070PUA comes with four HDMI ports. As with most televisions nowadays, one of these HDMI ports supports ARC (Audio Return Channel).

What this means is that you will be able to connect a soundbar to the television using that particular HDMI-ARC port. Apart from the HDMI ports, the LG 86UM8070PUA also comes with three USB ports and an Ethernet port.

Also, this television features digital optical audio out as well as a composite video input. For wireless connectivity, the LG 86UM8070PUA comes with a built-in WIFI and Bluetooth.

Moving on, the television’s remote control is another aspect we will be discussing in this section. To start with, like most high-end LG smart televisions, the LG 86UM8070PUA comes with a magic remote control.

To be descriptive, this remote control is made of plastic and features a matte-black finish. Also, this remote control comes with quite a number of rubber buttons.

Speaking of buttons, despite the remote’s not-too-big stature, you will find a full number pad on the remote. Also, this remote features a round navigation button.

At the center of this navigation button, you will find a scroll wheel for pointer/cursor navigation. That’s not all, this remote also features two dedicated buttons for quick access to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Impressively, if you don’t enjoy pressing buttons, this magic remote features a built-in microphone. This microphone allows for voice input via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Just as you will find in other LG TV remotes, the LG 86UM8070PUA’s magic remote has an “LG” logo at the bottom. This logo is for easy brand recognition and it also gives the remote an appealing look.

In conclusion, the LG 86UM8070PUA comes with a great wealth of ports that should meet most users’ connectivity demands. Also, this television features a magic remote that supports voice input.

Therefore, I will be rating the LG 86UM8070PUA a nine out of ten in this ports and connectivity section.

LG 86UM8070PUA: Smart Features

Like most LG smart televisions, the LG 86UM8070PUA utilizes the webOS as its operating system. One interesting and impressive fact about this webOS is its user-friendly and lag-free interface.

Thus, you should be able to navigate around the interface seamlessly. Also, selecting streaming apps on this operating system should be responsive due to its smooth interface.

Aside from the user-friendly interface, the webOS offers a variety of popular streaming apps. A few of these popular streaming apps include YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.

Impressively, you can download more streaming apps from the LG content store anytime you need them. However, the LG content store offers limited streaming apps compared to the Andriod OS’ Google Playstore store and Tizen OS’ Samsung store.

Nevertheless, you can still stream content via supported streaming apps from your smart devices to the LG 86UM8070PUA. To do this, you have to download the LG Smart Share app.

Moreover, this application is compatible with Windows OS, Linux, iOS, macOS, and Andriod.

In summary, the LG 86UM8070PUA comes with an impressive operating system that offers major streaming apps. Therefore, I will rate the television an eight out of ten in this smart review section.
