The Level Lock+ is still one of the best-looking Apple Home Key locks, but it is not automatically the best HomeKit lock in 2026. The discreet deadbolt suits Apple-heavy households that value traditional hardware and a physical key; Schlage or Yale are better for keypad access, mixed-device homes, and frequent guests.

This review evaluates the Level Lock+ against current alternatives rather than repeating its 2022 launch-era reputation. The decisive question is not simply whether the lock works with Apple Home. The decisive question is whether your household prefers invisible hardware and Apple Home Key over a built-in keypad, broader guest access, longer battery intervals, or lower total cost.

Reviewed generation matters: “Level Lock+” can describe an earlier Bluetooth/HomeKit-oriented product or the current Level Lock+ (Matter), which uses Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread. Battery life, remote-control requirements, and ecosystem support differ between those versions. Confirm the model number, packaging, connectivity standard, and firmware before applying any specification or review result.

Key takeaways

  • The current Level Lock+ (Matter) uses Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread, supports Apple Home Key, and lists compatibility with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings when the required hub or controller is present.
  • The current Matter specification rates the Level Lock+ BHMA Certified AAA / ANSI Grade 1/A, supports 23⁄8-inch or 23⁄4-inch backsets, and specifies one CR2 lithium battery with up to six months of typical battery life.
  • The Level Lock+ hides the smart-lock mechanism inside conventional-looking deadbolt hardware, but the base lock has no built-in keypad.
  • The older Bluetooth Level Lock specification says up to one year of typical battery life, so the older figure should not be presented as the current Matter model’s rating.
  • Schlage Encode Plus and Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus are stronger choices for households that need a keypad or easy access for non-Apple visitors; Aqara can offer more features per dollar but may require its own hub and ecosystem.
  • The Level Lock+ is a good purchase when discreet design and Apple Home Key outrank value, keypad convenience, and broad guest compatibility; it is not an unqualified best overall HomeKit lock.

Is the Level Lock+ the best HomeKit lock?

No—not for every household. The Level Lock+ remains one of the strongest choices for an Apple-focused buyer who wants a smart lock that looks and operates like a normal deadbolt. The lock is unusually discreet, supports Apple Home Key, retains a physical key, and offers cards, fobs, touch unlocking, and app control.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The Level Lock+ is a weaker all-around recommendation when a household needs a built-in keypad, frequent temporary codes, simple access for Android users, or the lowest total system cost. Schlage Encode Plus and Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus put more access controls on the door. Aqara models can provide more features for less hardware cost, although the hub and app requirements can change the real price and complexity.

The launch-era verdict also needs updating. Early coverage treated Level as an obvious Apple Home Key choice partly because the category had fewer available competitors. Current comparison coverage generally positions Level as the discreet option rather than the universal winner. 2026 comparison coverage of Apple Home Key locks favors evaluating reliability, access methods, and total ecosystem cost alongside appearance.

What exactly is the Level Lock+?

The Level Lock+ is a smart deadbolt designed to place its electronics inside the lock rather than in a conspicuous exterior keypad or a large interior housing. From outside, the door keeps a conventional key cylinder. From inside, the hardware is intended to preserve the familiar deadbolt appearance and operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That design is the product’s central argument. A Schlage or Yale keypad is immediately recognizable as smart-home hardware; a Level Lock+ is much easier to mistake for an ordinary deadbolt. The trade-off is equally important: the Level Lock+ does not include a built-in numeric keypad. Code-based access requires the optional Level Keypad, while other guests need an Apple device, card, fob, physical key, touch access, or another configured method.

The current Level Lock+ Matter specification lists Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread. The older Level Lock specification centers on Bluetooth and lists Apple HomeKit and Amazon Sidewalk for remote connectivity. Those are not interchangeable descriptions of one identical product.

How are the Level Lock+ generations different?

The safest buying practice is to identify the exact generation before comparing battery life, remote access, or third-party ecosystem support.

Specification Older Level Lock specification Current Level Lock+ Matter specification
Wireless connectivity Bluetooth Low Energy Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread
Typical battery claim Up to one year Up to six months
Battery One CR2 lithium battery One CR2 lithium battery
Apple integration Apple HomeKit-oriented; check exact product support Apple Home and Apple Home Key support
Other ecosystems listed Amazon Sidewalk remote connectivity Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings with compatible Matter-over-Thread infrastructure
Backset 23⁄8 inches or 23⁄4 inches 23⁄8 inches or 23⁄4 inches
Water and temperature specification IPx4; -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C) IPx4; -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C)

According to Level’s current Matter documentation, the Matter version provides up to six months under typical conditions. According to Level’s older technical specification, the earlier Bluetooth version provides up to one year under typical conditions. Both are “up to” figures, not guarantees; usage, temperature, radio conditions, and connection behavior affect actual battery life.

How does Apple Home Key work on the Level Lock+?

Apple Home Key turns a supported lock into a credential in Apple Wallet. After the supported lock is added to the Apple Home app, Apple adds a home key to the user’s iPhone Wallet. With Express Mode enabled, the user holds a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock to unlock without Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Apple also allows a security configuration that requires authentication instead.

  1. Add the supported Level Lock+ to the Apple Home app.
  2. Follow the pairing and home-key setup prompts.
  3. Choose whether Express Mode should allow tap-to-unlock without authentication.
  4. Test the iPhone and Apple Watch separately if both will be used.
  5. Give household members the appropriate Apple Home access and keep a physical fallback available.

Apple’s Home Key documentation explains Express Mode, home-key access, and guest access. The Level Apple-user supplement identifies iPhone XS or later with iOS 15 or later and Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 8 or later for the referenced product documentation. Requirements can vary by product generation and current software, so check the requirements for the exact lock before purchase.

Home Key should not be confused with general Apple Home compatibility. A lock can appear in Apple Home without supporting Home Key. Home Key is the Wallet-based tap-to-unlock experience that many Apple buyers actually want.

Will Home Key open the door if the phone battery is dead?

Do not treat Home Key as your only entry method. Apple documents home-key use on compatible iPhones and Apple Watches, but dead-battery behavior depends on the specific device and lock generation. Keep a physical key, Level key card, key fob, or another configured fallback available. The Level Lock+ supports multiple methods, which is more useful in a real outage than relying on one phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the Level Lock+ ways to unlock?

The Level Lock+ family supports several entry methods, but some methods are optional or version-dependent.

Method Included or optional Best use
Apple Home Key Supported on compatible versions and Apple devices Fast tap-to-unlock for Apple household members
Level Home app Supported app method Phone-based control, sharing, and activity history
Apple Home app Supported with compatible Apple Home setup Home control and automations
Touch to Lock / Touch to Unlock Supported behavior; exact operation depends on setup Convenient proximity-based access
Physical key Retained conventional method Backup for battery, hub, phone, or network problems
Level key card or key fob Supported Level credentials Users without a compatible phone or watch
Numeric code Requires the optional Level Keypad Children, contractors, cleaners, neighbors, and non-Apple guests
Google Home or Alexa Version and compatible hub/controller dependent Third-party ecosystem control

Level’s official unlocking-method documentation lists app, Home Key, key card, fob, optional keypad code, physical key, touch, and automatic behaviors. A buyer should distinguish a feature supported by the lock body from a feature that requires a separate accessory or compatible infrastructure.

Does the Level Lock+ have a keypad?

The base Level Lock+ has no built-in keypad. The optional Level Keypad adds numeric-code entry, but adding the keypad changes the product’s cost, appearance, and installation plan.

A keypad is not essential for an Apple-only household in which everyone uses Home Key, the Level app, cards, fobs, or physical keys. A keypad becomes highly valuable when children do not carry phones, cleaners need temporary entry, contractors need a code, or Android users need routine access. For those households, the minimalist Level installation may be less convenient than a lock with keypad hardware included from the start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Level Lock+ easy to install on any door?

The Level Lock+ is not universal. Installation depends on the existing deadbolt, door dimensions, bolt movement, jamb alignment, and the supplied strike plate.

According to Level’s current Matter specification, the lock supports a 23⁄8-inch or 23⁄4-inch backset, uses a standard 2.125-inch bore in the referenced professional documentation, and supports a door thickness of 1.75 to 2 inches for the referenced package. Level specifies short 21⁄4-inch or tall 23⁄4-inch strike plates and says third-party strike plates will not work with the specified lock. Check the exact package documentation before ordering.

Installation checklist

  1. Measure the deadbolt backset from the door edge to the center of the bore.
  2. Measure the bore and door thickness against the requirements for the exact Level package.
  3. Inspect the jamb and confirm that the supplied Level strike plate can be installed.
  4. With the door open, install the lock and confirm that the bolt moves freely.
  5. Before final tightening, check that the interior and exterior parts sit squarely.
  6. Calibrate and test the lock manually with the door open.
  7. Test locking and unlocking electronically before closing the door.
  8. Keep the old key and a fallback entry method available during first setup.

If the lock works with the door open but binds when the door is closed, suspect mechanical alignment before blaming Apple Home. Check strike alignment, door sag, weather-strip pressure, and whether the bolt turns smoothly by hand with the door closed. A motorized deadbolt cannot compensate for a weak, sagging, or poorly aligned door.

How good is the Level Lock+ design?

The Level Lock+ is strongest as a piece of hardware. The electronics are integrated into the deadbolt, the exterior retains a traditional key cylinder, and the lock avoids the large visible controls used by keypad models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The understated design also reduces immediate feedback. A keypad gives visitors an obvious place to enter a code and often provides visible status indicators. Level instead asks users to understand touch behavior, use the app, present a card or fob, tap with Home Key, or carry a physical key. Minimalism is therefore both the product’s advantage and its limitation.

The Level Home app supports phone unlocking, access sharing, activity history, and multiple unlocking methods. The Level Home App Store listing is useful for checking current app capabilities and user feedback, but App Store reviews are anecdotal rather than controlled reliability testing. Reported experiences include both praise for the hardware and support and frustration with setup or re-pairing.

How long does the Level Lock+ battery last?

The current Matter model’s official battery claim is up to six months under typical conditions, while the older Bluetooth specification says up to one year. The current Matter figure is the one to use for a confirmed Matter unit.

Both cited specifications use one CR2 lithium battery. Actual life depends on how often the lock operates, radio conditions, temperature, and whether connectivity repeatedly retries. Buyers should keep a compatible spare CR2 battery and should not wait for a completely dead lock before planning replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Buyer situation Battery expectation to plan around Practical response
Confirmed Level Lock+ Matter Up to six months under typical conditions Keep a spare CR2 and monitor warnings
Older Bluetooth Level Lock specification Up to one year under typical conditions Verify the exact model before relying on the longer interval
High-use or difficult radio environment Could be shorter than the official “up to” figure Plan replacement by warnings and usage rather than the maximum claim

What security rating does the Level Lock+ have?

The current Matter specification identifies the Level Lock+ as BHMA Certified AAA and ANSI 156.18 and 156.40 Grade 1/A. The same specification lists IPx4 water resistance and an operating range of -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C). Level’s technical specification is the appropriate source for those certification and environmental claims.

Certification is not a promise that a door cannot be forced. Real security also depends on whether the bolt fully extends into the strike, whether the strike and jamb are strong, whether the door is aligned, how the physical-key cylinder is protected, and whether the owner secures the Level and Apple accounts. Use a strong unique account password, enable Apple Account two-factor authentication, and treat the door frame as part of the lock system.

Does the Level Lock+ need a home hub?

The exact answer depends on the function and generation. Local Bluetooth or nearby tap-to-unlock is different from remote access, automations, and Matter control while away from home.

The current Matter version uses Thread as well as Bluetooth. Matter accessories require a compatible controller, and Thread-based Matter accessories require Thread-capable infrastructure. Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and compatible Apple TV hardware as possible home-hub products, with exact Thread capability depending on the model and configuration. Apple’s current Home and Matter guidance explains the platform requirements.

To inspect Apple’s active hub, open Home app → More → Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges. Apple’s home-hub support guidance describes the home-hub role and requirements. Owning an iPhone alone does not guarantee remote access.

How does guest access work?

Guest access is where the Level Lock+ can lose to keypad competitors. Apple household members with compatible iPhones or Apple Watches are the easiest fit. Other users may need shared Apple Home access, a Level card or fob, a physical key, or the optional keypad.

Apple provides a guest-access-code path for supported locks: Home app → touch and hold the lock → Accessory Settings → Manage Access → Add Guest. Apple warns that not every Home-compatible lock supports access codes, so buyers should verify support for the exact Level model and software. A Home Key-compatible lock does not automatically provide convenient code entry for every visitor.

Guest type Most practical Level option Potential problem
Apple household member Home Key, Home app, Level app, touch, card, or fob Compatible device and Apple Home setup still matter
Android user Level Keypad, card, fob, or physical key No built-in keypad on the base lock
Cleaner or contractor Optional keypad code or managed credential Temporary code convenience depends on supported hardware and setup
Occasional visitor Physical key, card, fob, or supported guest access Issuing and recovering credentials may be less convenient than a keypad

How reliable is the Level Lock+?

Available coverage is mixed, and the evidence does not justify a universal “most reliable” claim. Some reviews praise the Level Lock+ as a particularly strong Apple Home Key product. Other long-term and comparative coverage reports better Home Key reliability from Schlage or describes Level as less dependable or less feature-rich. App Store feedback contains both positive hardware and support experiences and complaints about confusing setup or re-pairing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

The useful reliability question is scenario-specific: does iPhone Express Mode work, does Apple Watch unlocking work, does touch unlocking respond, does the lock report status correctly, does remote control recover after a hub or internet interruption, and can the lock be re-paired after a battery change or Home removal?

Short setup demonstrations cannot answer all of those questions. A careful owner should test iPhone unlocking, Apple Watch unlocking, Express Mode, authentication-required mode, touch access, manual key access, status reporting, and fallback entry before depending on the lock for every household member.

What should you compare before buying?

Lock Best fit Advantages over Level Lock+ Trade-offs
Level Lock+ Apple-heavy, design-conscious household Most discreet presentation, traditional key cylinder, Home Key No included keypad; Matter version’s battery claim is up to six months; hub and door compatibility matter
Schlage Encode Plus Apple household needing keypad access Integrated keypad and stronger case for mixed-device visitors; comparative coverage favors its Home Key reliability More visible hardware; verify current price and availability
Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus Buyer wanting keypad and door-status-oriented features Keypad access and DoorSense-oriented feature set in comparative coverage Different design, battery, and ecosystem trade-offs; verify exact variant
Aqara U100/U200/U400 Feature-focused or value-focused buyer Potentially more access features per dollar, depending on model Hub, app, ecosystem, and total-cost requirements vary by model
Level Lock Pro Level fan wanting newer capabilities Direct comparison for Matter, Home Key, and door-status sensing interests Compare current price, battery, fit, and required infrastructure rather than assuming it is universally better

Level Lock Pro coverage from MacRumors describes the newer product’s Matter and Apple Home Key context, while Apple’s product listing for Level Lock Pro identifies door-status detection and Matter-over-Thread connectivity. Buyers attracted primarily to Level’s invisible design should compare both Level products before ordering.

Which lock should each household choose?

Household Recommendation Reason
Apple-only and design-conscious Level Lock+ Home Key and discreet conventional hardware are the priorities
Apple household needing a keypad Schlage Encode Plus or Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus Visitors and family members can use a visible numeric control
Mixed iPhone/Android household Schlage, Yale, or another keypad-equipped model Daily access does not depend on Apple credentials
Value-focused buyer Compare Aqara’s complete system cost Include any required hub, accessories, and installation—not just the lock body
Existing Level owner Compare Level Lock+ with Level Lock Pro Newer Matter and sensing features may justify the newer product
Weak or misaligned door Repair the door and frame first No smart lock can solve poor bolt alignment or a weak strike

How do you troubleshoot common Level Lock+ problems?

Pairing fails or Apple Home says a hub is required

  1. Confirm that the active Apple home hub is updated.
  2. Confirm that the iPhone uses the Apple Account associated with the Home.
  3. Confirm that the hub is powered, online, and on the expected network during setup.
  4. Restart the home hub.
  5. Temporarily check VPN, firewall, and third-party network-security software.
  6. Try adding the lock again using the recorded setup code and a known fallback entry method.

Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for “Home Hub Required” and software errors recommends checking the active hub, updating and restarting it, checking network conditions, and reviewing VPN or security software. Avoid repeatedly deleting and re-adding the lock without recording the setup code and fallback credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote control is inconsistent

Check the home hub, internet connection, Matter controller, Thread coverage, lock battery, door alignment, and software versions. Local Bluetooth or physical-key access may continue during an internet outage, but remote control and automations should not be described as offline-proof.

The lock works with the door open but not closed

Check the strike alignment, door sag, weather-strip pressure, and bolt friction. Turn the deadbolt by hand with the door closed; resistance indicates a mechanical problem that should be corrected before relying on motorized operation.

A guest cannot unlock the door

Identify whether the guest has a compatible Apple device and shared Home access, a Level card or fob, a physical key, or the optional Level Keypad with a configured code. Home Key support does not automatically solve access for every guest.

The battery dies

Use the physical key, key card, key fob, or another configured fallback. Keep a spare CR2 battery and a physical key accessible outside the locked area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation

Buy the Level Lock+ when the buyer wants the least conspicuous smart lock possible, prioritizes Apple Home Key, wants to retain a conventional key, and accepts that keypad access may require an add-on. Check the door measurements and exact connectivity generation first.

Choose Schlage Encode Plus or Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus when a built-in keypad, mixed-device access, or frequent temporary codes matters more than invisible design. Compare Aqara only by total installed system cost, including its hub where required. If the buyer is committed to Level but wants newer Matter or sensing capabilities, compare Level Lock Pro directly rather than assuming the older Lock+ remains the best Level choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Level Lock+ work with Apple Home Key?

Yes, the supported Level Lock+ versions support Apple Home Key, but the exact iPhone, Apple Watch, software, and lock-generation requirements must match. Apple Home compatibility alone does not prove that a lock supports Home Key.

Does the Level Lock+ include a keypad?

No, the base Level Lock+ does not include a built-in keypad. Numeric-code entry requires the optional Level Keypad, so Schlage Encode Plus or Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus may be more convenient for Android users, children, contractors, or frequent guests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Level Lock+ work remotely without an Apple home hub?

No, remote Apple Home control and automations require a suitable Apple home hub. The Matter-over-Thread version also needs compatible Matter and Thread infrastructure; nearby local unlocking and physical-key access are separate from remote control.

How long does the Level Lock+ battery last?

The current Level Lock+ Matter specification says up to six months under typical conditions from one CR2 lithium battery. The older Bluetooth Level Lock specification says up to one year, so buyers must identify the exact generation before relying on the longer figure.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Level Lock+ remains a premium, attractive Apple Home Key deadbolt and one of the best choices for an Apple-only household that dislikes visible smart-lock hardware. It is not the best overall HomeKit lock by default in 2026: keypad users, mixed-device homes, frequent guests, and value-focused buyers should compare Schlage, Yale, Aqara, and the newer Level Lock Pro first.
