Complete protein is the better default for building muscle. It supplies leucine and the other essential amino acids your body needs as building blocks. Leucine can signal muscle protein synthesis, but isolated leucine does not provide those other amino acids. If you already eat enough protein, there is no established general muscle-building advantage to adding a leucine supplement.
What leucine does—and what it cannot do alone
Leucine is one of the nine essential amino acids, meaning your body cannot make it and you must get it from food or supplements. It plays a signaling role in muscle protein synthesis (MPS), the process of making muscle proteins. But a signal is not the same as the materials needed to build them: muscle also needs the other essential amino acids.
Isolated leucine supplies leucine alone. A complete protein supplies all essential amino acids. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that most complete proteins are about 40% essential amino acids; a 25-gram serving of total protein therefore provides about 10 grams of essential amino acids. Leucine supplements vs. complete protein
| What to compare | Isolated leucine | Complete protein |
|---|---|---|
| Amino-acid coverage | Leucine only; it does not supply the other essential amino acids. | All essential amino acids when the source is complete. |
| Main practical role | May be relevant to a narrow formulation or intake question; it does not replace dietary protein. | Supplies protein and essential amino acids through food or a supplement. |
| What the evidence supports | Acute signaling or MPS findings do not establish greater long-term muscle growth. | Exercise guidance supports combining resistance training with adequate protein intake. |
| When it may help | No general need is established when daily protein intake is already adequate. | A powder can be convenient when food alone does not meet your protein needs. |
| Question to ask | Am I already eating enough complete protein? | Which foods or convenient sources help me meet my daily target? |
How much protein should you aim for?
The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) 2017 position stand gives a broad daily range of 1.4–2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for most exercising people. Its general per-serving guidance is 0.25 g/kg or 20–40 g of high-quality protein, with a balanced essential-amino-acid profile. These are population-level recommendations, not individualized prescriptions. ISSN position stand: protein and exercise (2017)

- 500 Grams of L-Leucine Powder
- Non-GMO and Gluten Free
- Primary Branched Chain Amino Acid (BCAA)
- 5 Grams of L-Leucine Per Serving
- Manufactured In a NSF Certified, GMP Compliant, FDA Registered Facility
The same position stand says protein servings should strive to contain 700–3,000 mg of leucine alongside balanced essential amino acids. This is guidance for a protein serving, not a recommendation to take that amount of isolated leucine. It also does not establish that reaching a particular leucine figure guarantees muscle gain.
For context, the ISSN’s 2023 position stand discusses MPS findings with 1.5–3.0 g of essential amino acids at rest and a plateau around 15–18 g. Those figures refer to essential-amino-acid supplementation and acute MPS findings—not an isolated-leucine dose or a promise of long-term hypertrophy. Do you need protein powder after a workout?
No. The ISSN says active people can meet protein requirements through whole foods; supplements can be a practical way to reach protein quality and quantity, particularly for athletes with high training volumes. A whey or other complete protein powder is an option if food intake falls short, not a requirement.
The ISSN position stand states that resistance exercise and protein ingestion each stimulate MPS and can work synergistically when protein is consumed before or after resistance exercise. The practical priority is consistent resistance training and enough total protein across the day; the guidance does not make an isolated leucine supplement necessary after training.

Can food provide enough leucine?
Yes. Foods that provide complete protein also provide leucine as part of their amino-acid profile. Because the relevant goal is to meet protein and essential-amino-acid needs, consider your overall intake from meals and snacks rather than treating leucine as a separate target to chase. If your diet already supplies enough protein, the evidence here does not establish a general benefit from adding isolated leucine.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Leucine’s role as an MPS signal does not make it equivalent to complete protein. A 2020 review found evidence for amino-acid supplements, including leucine, equivocal. Acute MPS responses are not proof that a supplement produces greater long-term muscle growth. The available evidence does not establish a universal long-term advantage for a particular leucine supplement or protein powder. Review of evidence on milk proteins and amino acids (2020)

Muscle growth also depends on factors beyond the choice between these products, including training quality, energy intake, age, and baseline diet. The ISSN discusses higher protein intakes in specific circumstances, such as calorie-restricted periods; those are not automatic targets for everyone.
