Lenovo ThinkPad E580: At First Glance

In recent years, Lenovo has evolved greatly in the tech world. Their attention to detail in making the necessary changes on each model from its predecessor has made them quite popular among tech lovers.

Therefore, to add to the list of excellent modified models, Lenovo released the ThinkPad E580 in 2018, a worthy successor to the ThinkPad E570. The Lenovo ThinkPad E580 is a sturdy laptop that offers better performance and features compared to its predecessor.

Also, this laptop offers multiple configuration options at a reasonable price. Speaking of price, when I published this review in February 2022, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 had a starting price of $819.95.

With all that being said, I know you are already curious to find out more about his laptop. Well, to know more, you have to read on!

Lenovo ThinkPad E580: Design, Dimension and Weight

Truth be told, I am always intrigued and fascinated with the sleek and pleasing design of Lenovo laptops. To give more details, the design specs and aesthetics around the chassis of their laptops are just superb.

Talking about design aesthetics, on looking at the exterior of Lenovo laptops, you could see every hint of perfection in the design. Well, the whole idea of designing a laptop is to satisfy your target audience.

Therefore, permit me to say beyond reasonable doubt that Lenovo achieved this goal with the ThinkPad E580’s design. Specifically, this laptop comes with numerous design specs that make it stand out among its competitors.

To start with, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 features two color options that buyers can choose from. These color options include dark silver and a stunning standard Lenovo black.

In addition to these color options, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 features an aluminum chassis. This aluminum chassis appears to be of high quality, which in turn makes the laptop solid.

In fact, the laptop is so solid that it would take a whole lot of effort to damage any of its parts.

Moving on, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 features a smooth black lid that has a “ThinkPad” logo in the upper right corner. Furthermore, this lid is attached to the laptop’s base with a set of hinges.

These hinges are sturdy and help to keep the lid in place when the laptop is opened. Additionally, due to how sturdy the hinges are, the laptop’s lid hardly wobbles when pushed.

When it comes to the interior of the Lenovo ThinkPad E580, the first thing you will notice is the 15.6-inch display. Impressively, this 15.6-inch display offers two resolution options – HD (1366 x 768) resolution and FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution.

With either resolution option, this display should be able to offer decent picture quality for casual video streaming and web browsing. Also, the display is made with an IPS panel.

Thus, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580’s 15.6-inch display offers wide viewing angles. Therefore, when viewing the display off-center or from the sides, the picture quality and color accuracy will remain constant.

In addition to its IPS panel, this laptop’s display comes with an anti-glare coating. This coating basically reduces reflection from the display when using the laptop in a bright area or outdoor.

Moreover, this display is surrounded by slim bezels. Despite the slimness of these bezels, Lenovo managed to include a 720p (HD) webcam at the top bezel.

Performance-wise, this webcam isn’t good for taking pictures as it delivers grainy and blurry images. It is, however, ideal for casual video calls and regular skyping.

Moving on to the keyboard, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 comes with a full-sized chiclet-style keyboard. This keyboard features a set of dedicated number pads and its keys are well-spaced to accommodate numerous finger sizes.

Also, the keyboard’s keys are responsive and make minimal noise when pressed. Therefore, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580’s keyboard should offer a comfortable typing experience.

Below this keyboard, you will discover a sizeable touchpad with a set of dedicated click buttons. In terms of performance, this touchpad offers a smooth and responsive surface for easy navigation.

Also, the touchpad support multitouch gestures such as swipe-to-zoom.

When it comes to the ports, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 features a decent number of ports. To start with, you will find a USB Type-C port, an HDMI port, two USB Type-A ports, and a 3.5-mm combo audio jack on the laptop’s left side.

Meanwhile, on the right side, you will see a microSD card reader, a USB Type-A port, an Ethernet port, and a Kensington lock.

Measuring 369 x 252 x 19.95 mm (W x D x H), and weighing 2100 g, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 isn’t particularly lightweight. However, this laptop is light enough to be carried around in a backpack.

Also, when compared with some of its competitors, this laptop weighs less. For example, the Dell Latitude 5580 measures 376 x 250.65 x 23.25 mm and weighs 2200 g.

Therefore, I will rate the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 an eight out of ten in this design review section.

Lenovo ThinkPad E580: Processor (CPU) Performance

For processing power, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 features an 8th generation Intel Core i7-8550U processor. This processor is a quad-core processor that offers a cache memory of 8 MB.

Furthermore, in terms of speed, this quad-core CPU offers a 1.80 GHz base frequency and a maximum frequency of 4.0 GHz. Hence, owing to its high clock speed of 4.0 GHz, this processor should be able to handle practically any computing task thrown at it.

Basically, with this processor, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 will be able to run demanding applications like Adobe Photoshop smoothly. Also, this laptop will be able to handle heavy multitasking.

To further prove the processing performance of this laptop, I will now highlight its Cinebench R15 test results. Cinebench R15 is a benchmark test that measures the performance of a computer’s processor’s cores.

Thus, this benchmark test carries out two tests – the single-core test and the multi-core test. For clarity, the single-core test evaluates the performance of the processor when just one of its cores is in use.

The multi-core test, however, evaluates the performance of the processor when all the cores are in use. Moreover, a high score on each test conveys a good processor performance.

Therefore, according to the Cinebench R15 test results, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 scored 156 points on the single-core test. In addition to that, this laptop scored 521 points on the multi-core test.

Comparatively, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 has a better processer performance than the HP ProBook 450 G4 which uses an Intel Core i7-500U processor. Specifically, the HP ProBook 450 G4 scored 146 points and 355 points on the Cinebench R15 single-core and multi-core tests respectively.

In conclusion, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 features a powerful 8th gen Intel processor that offers nothing short of impressive performance. Furthermore, this laptop outperformed one of its closest competitors on a CPU benchmark test.

Hence, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 deserves a nine out of ten rating in this processor performance review section.

Lenovo ThinkPad E580: Memory (RAM) Performance

To start with, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 comes with two memory slots. Furthermore, this laptop offers standard memory of 8 GB on one of its memory slots.

Therefore, with the help of the second memory slot, you can upgrade the laptop’s memory up to the maximum capacity of 32 GB. However, I don’t think you will ever need to do that because 8 GB RAM is just enough for this laptop to run smoothly.

Basically, with 8 GB RAM, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 should be able to open 15 Chrome tabs simultaneously without breaking a sweat. Moreover, even when there are other apps like Microsoft Word opened alongside these Chrome tabs, this laptop will perform seamlessly without lagging.

That said, to validate the performance of this laptop with 8 GB RAM, I will briefly discuss the laptop’s PCMark 8 test results. PCMark 8 is a benchmark test that measures how well a laptop’s memory can handle day-to-day computing tasks.

Furthermore, a high score on this test signifies a good memory performance. Therefore, according to the PCMark 8 test results, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 delivered a score of 4273 points.

Impressively, on this test, this laptop outscored all the laptops in its category. A perfect example is the HP ProBook 450 G4 which was only able to score 3715 points on the PCMark 8 test.

In summary, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 offers two memory slots as well as sufficient standard memory. To add to that, this laptop outperformed all the laptops in its category on a memory test.

Therefore, I will be rating the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 a nine out of ten in this memory review section.

Lenovo ThinkPad E580: Storage Option and Performance

For storage, Lenovo offers three storage options for the ThinkPad E580. The first option is the 7200 RPM 2.5″ SATA HDD that supports a maximum storage capacity of 500 GB.

The second option is the 5400 RPM 2.5″ SATA HDD that supports up to 2 TB maximum storage capacity. The last option is a PCIe M.2 SSD that supports a maximum storage capacity of 512 GB.

This review is based on the ThinkPad E580 with a 512 GB PCIe M.2 SSD. With a storage space of 512 GB, users should be able to save numerous files on this laptop including pictures, songs, and apps.

Moreover, if the storage space isn’t enough, the ThinkPad E580 comes with a microSD card reader for storage expansion. Besides, due to the fact that the laptop uses an SSD, it should be able to offer fast read and write speed.

To prove this, I will now highlight the Lenovo ThinkPad E580’s CrystalDiskMark test results. Briefly, CrystalDiskMark is a benchmark test that evaluates the performance of a storage drive by measuring the read and write speed.

If you are curious, read speed is the time it takes a computer’s storage drive to open a file. Meanwhile, write speed refers to how quickly a computer’s storage drive saves a file.

It is worth noting that a high “MBps” value on the CrystalDiskMark test indicates a fast storage drive speed. Hence, based on the CrystalDiskMark test results, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 has a sequential read speed of 1280 MBps.

In addition to that, this Lenovo laptop has a sequential write speed of 638.6 MBps. When compared to the HP 17z which also uses an SSD storage drive, the ThinkPad E580 has a faster storage speed.

To be more specific, according to the CrystalDiskMark test, the HP 17z has a sequential read and write speed of 500.1 MBps and 325 MBps respectively.

In conclusion, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 offers various storage options that buyers can choose from. Therefore, I will be rating the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 a nine out of ten in this storage review section.

Lenovo ThinkPad E580: Graphics Card Performance

Just like the storage, Lenovo offers multiple GPU options for the ThinkPad E580. The first option is an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 graphics card.

The term “integrated” in this context means that this GPU is built into the laptop’s processor. Therefore, in other to carry out graphics-related tasks, this graphics card shares the system memory with the processor.

Hence, with this graphics card, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 won’t be able to perform smoothly when running graphics-intensive apps or games. Moreover, in terms of speed, the Intel UHD Graphics 620 offers a base and boost frequency of 300 MHz and 1150 MHz respectively.

That said, the second and last graphics card option is a dedicated AMD Radeon RX 550. Unlike the integrated graphics card, this GPU isn’t built into the processor and doesn’t share the system memory with the CPU.

Instead, the graphics card comes with a dedicated VRAM of 2 GB GDDR5 for carrying out graphics-related tasks. Furthermore, the GPU has a base frequency of 1100 MHz and a maximum frequency of 1183 MHz.

Moreover, with this dedicated GPU, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 will be able to run most graphics-demanding apps and games. For example, while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider, the laptop should be able to deliver a frame rate of around 44.31 fps.

To further prove this laptop’s performance with the dedicated AMD Radeon RX 550 GPU, we will now discuss its result on a 3DMark 11 test. 3DMark 11 is a graphics benchmark test that evaluates a computer’s 3D graphics rendering capabilities.

Furthermore, a high score on this test means a good graphics rendering performance. So, according to the 3DMark 11 test results, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 scored 4444 points.

Comparatively, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 performed better than the HP 17z which uses a dedicated AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics card. To be more specific, on the 3DMark 11 test, the HP 17z scored 3429 points.

Therefore, I will rate the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 a nine out of ten in this GPU review section. This is due to the fact that the laptop offers multiple graphics card options including a dedicated GPU.

Lenovo ThinkPad E580: Battery Life and Performance

The Lenovo ThinkPad E580 comes with a 45 Wh Li-ion battery. According to a claim made by Lenovo, this battery can last up to 13 hours.

To ascertain this claim, let us briefly discuss the battery rundown test results of the laptop. Briefly, the battery rundown test involves surfing the web continuously until the laptop’s battery dies.

Therefore, at the end of the battery rundown test, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 delivered a battery life of 6 hours and 44 minutes. Even though the battery life is adequate, it isn’t on par with Lenovo’s 13 hours claim.

In fact, when compared to other laptops in its category, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580’s battery life falls behind. For example, the HP ProBook 450 G4 delivered a battery life of 8 hours and 33 minutes on the battery rundown test.

Thus, in the battery review section, I will rate the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 a seven out of ten for its average battery performance.
