Start with the exact game and edition on an authorized store. For many classics, GOG is the clearest first stop because it identifies legitimate, DRM-free releases and, on qualifying listings such as Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, provides an offline installer that does not require GOG Galaxy. Steam is also licensed, but access is tied to a Steam account and may require its client or an internet connection. itch.io delivers creator-uploaded files or keys on a title-by-title basis; the platform itself does not impose DRM, yet a creator can still include activation or other restrictions.
Before paying, verify four separate things: the precise edition is authorized, checkout supplies files rather than only a platform key, the listed build matches your computer, and the seller’s refund policy covers a failed installation. How should I begin searching for a legal classic?
Search the exact title, edition, publisher and release year on an authorized retailer, rather than searching for a generic “abandonware” download. An old game does not become free of copyright because it is no longer sold in boxed form. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that whether a distribution is authorized is a fact question and cautions against standalone sales of purported backup copies; this is U.S.-focused information, not a ruling for every country. - Identify the edition. Record the subtitle, remake or original status, language, publisher and any expansion included. Different editions can have different executables, rights and operating-system support.
- Confirm the seller represents the rights holder or an authorized catalog. A page that merely labels a file “abandonware” is not evidence of permission to distribute it.
- Open the product’s system-requirements and delivery sections. Do not rely on a store-wide claim about every game in its catalog.
Which stores are most useful for classic PC games?
GOG: the strongest first check for a self-contained installer
GOG says its catalog is legitimate and DRM-free, and it describes Galaxy as optional. Its about page also advertises a 30-day refund window. Those are store-level policies; the title page still determines supported operating systems, included extras and whether an offline installer is actually available. GOG’s Preservation Program tests and maintains designated games, but the program is currently Windows-only. A game without that badge is not automatically a poor release, and a badge does not replace reading the title’s requirements.
The examined Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers listing is a useful model: it offers a downloadable offline installer without requiring Galaxy, lists Windows 10 and 11 as supported, and includes a manual and other extras. The page also identifies DOSBox and ScummVM configurations and records a changelog dated October 29, 2026. Those details apply to that edition only; use the same checks on any other game. Start at GOG’s catalog information, then inspect the exact product page.
Steam: broad catalog, account-based access
Steam’s subscriber agreement says, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” A Steam account is necessary, and the client, internet connection or an external launcher may be part of the access path. Steam Offline Mode requires preparation while online; it cannot make a game that requires an active connection, or an external launcher, work offline. Read the agreement and the product’s own requirements at Steam’s subscriber agreement.
Steam is a sensible choice when the exact release, language and extras you want are listed there, or when you already keep your library in Steam. It is a different ownership model from retaining an independent installer, so decide which access pattern matters before checkout.
itch.io: inspect every creator’s delivery details
itch.io’s creator FAQ answers the DRM question directly: “No. itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them.” That means itch.io does not alter uploaded files or impose a platform-wide DRM layer; it does not promise that every creator’s release is DRM-free. A creator can package an installer with its own protection or provide a separate activation key.

The buyer page separates downloadable files from external keys and displays operating-system icons. Check those fields, the creator’s description and any stated launcher before paying. itch.io’s terms discuss refunds for content that cannot run, cannot be accessed or is misrepresented, rather than promising one universal fixed window. Review the creator FAQ and the purchase terms for the individual project.
ZOOM Platform and Humble Store: leads that need listing-level verification
A retro-games guide identifies ZOOM Platform as a place to look, but its current terms and authorization for a particular title must be checked on the live listing. Do not infer that every item is DRM-free, supports your operating system or includes a permanent installer.
Humble offers vary in what checkout delivers. Some are standalone files; others are only keys redeemable on another platform. Before paying, identify the issuing publisher, redemption service, region restrictions, file-download entitlement and refund terms for that exact offer. A commercial guide can point you toward a candidate, but it is not a substitute for the current product page.
What exactly will checkout give me?
“Download” can mean a self-contained installer, a compressed archive, or a code that unlocks a different service. These are materially different deliverables.
- Offline installer or archive: a local file you can retain and reinstall, subject to the license and any title-specific activation.
- Platform key: a code that adds a license to Steam or another service; the platform account and its rules remain part of access.
- External launcher activation: a store purchase that still requires a publisher launcher, account or online check.
- Extras: manuals, soundtracks, patches or artwork may be separate downloads and can disappear from a listing, so save them when the license permits.
On the product page, look for labels such as “offline installer,” “DRM-free,” “redeem on Steam,” “activation key,” download formats and the number of files. If the wording is ambiguous, ask the seller before purchase and keep the answer with your receipt.

How do I verify that the game will run on my computer?
Match the exact edition’s requirements to your machine, not a modern remake or a different regional release.

- Check operating system and architecture. Confirm Windows, macOS or Linux support, the supported version range, 32-bit or 64-bit notes and whether an emulator or compatibility layer is bundled.
- Check hardware and display assumptions. Compare processor, memory, storage, graphics, resolution and controller requirements. A low historical requirement does not guarantee compatibility with a new driver or ultrawide display.
- Check language and content. Verify subtitles, spoken language, censorship or regional differences, expansions and multiplayer components.
- Read the release notes. A changelog can reveal fixes, bundled DOSBox or ScummVM profiles, and known limitations. The Gabriel Knight page’s October 29, 2026 entry illustrates why the date and edition matter.
- Plan for dependencies. Note whether the game starts directly, needs a launcher, requires an account, or depends on an external server. A retailer cannot preserve a multiplayer server that the publisher has shut down.
How can I keep playing if the internet or a launcher is unavailable?
Offline access, DRM status and legal rights are separate checks. A DRM-free installer may run without a store client, but it remains licensed software; conversely, a game sold through a platform may support an offline mode only after preparation.
For a GOG title that explicitly supplies an offline installer, download the installer and documentation while logged in, store them on your computer or a portable external USB drive, and keep the receipt and account details. Respect the license: retaining your purchase for personal reinstall is not permission to upload or share the files. For Steam, enable Offline Mode while online and launch the game once before travel; this will not bypass an active-connection requirement or a separate launcher.
What does “DRM-free” legally mean?
DRM-free describes the absence of a particular access-control mechanism in the supplied files. It does not transfer copyright, grant resale or redistribution rights, or prove that a third party was authorized to sell the game. GOG’s agreement describes a personal license, and Valve’s agreement expressly uses the licensed-not-sold formulation quoted above.
Rules differ by country. In the United States, the Copyright Office says authorization to distribute is a factual question and warns that a separately sold “backup copy” is not automatically lawful. If you need advice about a business, archival project or another jurisdiction, consult a qualified local lawyer rather than relying on the label “abandonware.”

Which refund rules should I read before paying?
Read the seller’s own policy before checkout, and save a copy of the terms shown for your transaction.
- GOG: advertises a 30-day refund window, subject to its policy and transaction conditions.
- Steam: describes a standard request within 14 days and with less than two hours played; exceptions and transaction-specific terms can apply.
- itch.io: considers specified problems such as inaccessible, non-running or misrepresented content under its terms rather than offering one universal fixed period.
- Other sellers: verify the current policy, the party responsible for the refund, regional exclusions and whether redeeming a key ends eligibility.
These are policy limits, not guarantees that every claim will be approved. If a download fails, stop repeated activation attempts, record the error, keep the order number and contact the seller through its official support channel.

- Re-read the edition page. Confirm that you installed the intended operating-system build and any bundled compatibility tool.
- Use the seller’s supplied files first. Avoid replacing executables with random internet downloads; they can be unauthorized or malicious.
- Check account and launcher state. For a platform key, sign into the required account, complete any first-run activation and test the platform’s documented offline procedure.
- Capture useful evidence. Save crash text, operating-system version, graphics driver version and the point at which installation fails.
- Request support or a refund within the stated terms. Explain the reproducible problem and ask whether a known patch, DOSBox or ScummVM profile, or alternate installer is supported.
A driver problem is different from title-specific DRM or an unauthorized file. Updating a driver may address a Windows compatibility error, but it cannot legalize a download or remove a publisher’s activation requirement.

Treat an unverified key as a separate risk: confirm the issuing publisher, region, redemption platform, seller authorization and refund path before payment. A low price or “abandonware” label does not establish that the key is legitimate.
