“Allowed to explore options” usually means an LEC player is still under contract, but the current organization has given permission to speak with other teams and consider future opportunities. It does not, on its own, make the player a free agent, confirm a release or transfer, waive a buyout, or show that another team has signed him.
That distinction is especially important during roster season: permission to look is a step in the process, not confirmation that a move has happened. The phrase is practical roster language, not proof of one universal contract clause, so the details of any individual player’s rights and obligations depend on information beyond the phrase itself.
What does “allowed to explore options” mean?
In LEC roster coverage, the phrase generally describes a player who remains under contract while being permitted to consider opportunities elsewhere. That can include contacting other organizations or evaluating an offer, but it does not mean the existing contract has ended.

The clearest recent example is Kadir “Fleshy” Kemiksiz. Reporting dated October 27, 2026 said Team Vitality had authorized him to seek opportunities for 2027 while he remained under contract. EsportNow reproduced his public statement: “I’m still under contract with Vitality but they have allowed me to explore options!” The wording makes both parts explicit: he could look for another opportunity, and his contract with Vitality was still in place.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
So the safest plain-English reading is: the player may explore the market, but the status of the existing contract—and whether any move will happen—remains unresolved. The phrase alone does not disclose the precise permissions, conditions, or timing involved.
Does it mean the player is a free agent?
No. “Allowed to explore options” is not equivalent to being a free agent. A player can have permission to speak with other teams and still be under contract with the current organization.
Free agency, release, transfer, and contract expiry describe different statuses or events. A report using the exploration phrase does not establish any of them unless it separately confirms the relevant development. In particular, do not rewrite “under contract but allowed to explore options” as “free agent” just to make a headline shorter.
What does the phrase not confirm?
It tells readers that the player has permission to consider opportunities; it does not settle the transaction or reveal the private terms governing it.

- Not a confirmed departure: the player may still be with the current organization while exploring.
- Not a signed destination: permission to look does not prove another team has made an offer or signed the player.
- Not a release: no release should be inferred unless a team, player, league filing, or reliable report confirms one.
- Not a buyout waiver: the phrase does not establish that a buyout has been waived or that a transfer can happen without negotiation.
- Not a disclosure of contract terms: it does not reveal salary continuation, matching rights, exclusivity, time limits, termination rights, or other private conditions.
These limits matter because a roster update can be accurate without explaining the mechanism behind it. Unless a source supplies more detail, readers cannot infer the contractual arrangements from this phrase alone.
How is exploring options different from a completed move?
The distinction is the difference between permission to investigate a possibility and confirmation that the player’s status has changed. The words used in a report indicate how far the available information goes.
| Roster wording or status | What it establishes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Allowed to explore options | The player may consider opportunities or speak with other teams while the existing contract may remain active. | A release, buyout waiver, transfer, free agency, or signed destination. |
| Reported talks | Some discussions are reported to be taking place. | An agreed deal or completed signing. |
| Agreed transfer | A transfer agreement is reported. | Any separate details not confirmed in the report, such as private financial or contract terms. |
| Completed signing | A new team’s signing is confirmed. | Contract details that have not been disclosed. |
This is a reading guide, not a claim that every report uses the terms consistently. Sheep Esports has described the possibility of an under-contract LEC player being permitted to talk to other teams while remaining on the existing roster. That kind of market exploration is still distinct from a completed roster transaction.

The player can consider available opportunities, but the eventual outcome depends on whether a suitable offer emerges and what the relevant parties agree to do about the existing contract.

- The player considers the market. The player may contact organizations, agents, or representatives and assess possible offers.
- A team may show interest. Interest or talks, if reported, are still not the same as a signed agreement.
- The organizations may need to resolve the existing contract. If another team wants the player before the current contract expires, the organizations may need to negotiate a transfer, buyout, or release.
- The player’s status may change—or may not. A deal could be reached, or the player could remain with the current organization or wait until the contract expires, depending on the contract and roster decision.
Public reporting does not establish the exact mechanics for a particular player unless it reports them separately. The phrase therefore indicates an opportunity to explore, not a guaranteed next step or a timetable.
How can you read an LEC roster announcement accurately?
Check what the report actually confirms rather than treating all offseason language as interchangeable. Four questions help separate an exploratory update from a completed move.
- What is the current contract status? Is the player still contracted, released, or reported to have reached contract expiry?
- Is permission to negotiate confirmed? Does the player or organization say the player can speak with other teams before expiry?
- Who controls the next step? Does the report say the player can move independently, or does it describe approval, buyout, or release negotiations with the current organization?
- How certain is the transaction? Is the news only about exploring, does it report talks or an agreement, or does it confirm a completed signing?
Use the narrowest accurate description. If a source says only that a player may explore options, report that status rather than upgrading it to “leaving,” “released,” or “signed.” If a report confirms a later development, describe that separately and attribute it to the source.

It does not establish that he had left Vitality, become a free agent, agreed to a buyout, or signed with another organization. Nor does the public wording reveal the terms of his contract or how a potential move would be handled. Those would require separate confirmation.
Why does the wording matter?
Roster announcements often compress several different stages into a short phrase. Readers may see permission to explore and assume the player is already available to sign, when the actual statement may only describe permission to have conversations while an existing contract continues.
For players, teams, and fans, keeping those stages distinct avoids overstating what is known. “Allowed to explore options,” “in talks,” “agreed a transfer,” and “signed” are not interchangeable descriptions. When a source has not confirmed the contract’s end or a completed move, the most accurate account is the limited one: the player can explore, and the outcome is not yet established.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an LEC player explore options and still play for his current team?
Yes. Exploration permission does not itself end the player’s contract or roster relationship. Whether the player continues playing is a separate roster decision that the phrase does not answer.

Does “exploring options” mean another LEC team has made an offer?
Not necessarily. The phrase signals permission to consider opportunities, not proof that an offer exists or that talks have begun.
Can a player stop exploring options after an announcement?
The public phrase does not explain whether or how a player can change course. That depends on the individual arrangement and any later statements.
Does the phrase have one official LEC definition?
The phrase is used as practical roster language and is not, by itself, evidence of one universal contract clause. A specific official definition would need to be established by an applicable league rule or contract, rather than inferred from ordinary roster reporting.
