You do not have to give up AI coding tools to learn programming—but you do need practice that shows what you can do without them. Studies find that AI can help learners complete coding tasks, yet higher task scores do not necessarily mean better retention or code comprehension. For fundamentals, make a genuine attempt first, then use AI for explanations or hints and check that you can read, debug, and change the code yourself.
Does using AI to code make you worse at programming?
Not automatically. The available studies do not establish that every kind of AI assistance harms learning; they show that results depend on the task, the learner, the kind of help, and what outcome is measured. AI can make it easier to finish an exercise while leaving a learner no better at explaining or reproducing the underlying ideas independently.
That distinction matters because a working program is only one measure of progress. If an assistant supplies the structure, chooses an approach, and repairs errors, the learner may get a correct result without practicing those decisions. If the learner asks why a solution works, tests its assumptions, and then debugs or modifies it, the same tool can become part of a learning process instead.

So “drop AI” is best treated as a deliberate practice mode, not a universal rule. Use some sessions to retrieve concepts and solve problems unaided; use assistance in other sessions when it helps you understand a sticking point. The key test is whether you can still reason about the code after the assistance is gone.

Why isn’t finishing a coding task the same as learning?
A task score measures performance on that task under those conditions. Learning is better judged by whether you can later recall the idea, recognize when it applies, explain the code, and use it in a new situation without the same support. These outcomes can move together, but they are not interchangeable.
A 2026 randomized trial in an introductory programming course illustrates the difference. In a 90-minute concurrency exercise involving 275 participants, students using either a scaffolded AI tutor or unrestricted ChatGPT earned higher exercise scores than students in a no-AI control group. Neither AI condition showed greater pre-to-post knowledge gains or an advantage in code comprehension. The authors characterized AI primarily as a performance aid in that setting.
The trial also reported lower frustration and some lower cognitive-load measures in AI conditions; only the scaffolded tutor increased intrinsic motivation. Those findings describe this course and exercise, not a guaranteed effect of AI on every learner. They do show why an immediate score alone can overstate what a student has learned.
For personal practice, separate “I got it to run” from “I can explain it.” After solving a problem, close the assistant and ask yourself what each important line does, why the approach works, and what would need to change if the requirements changed. If you cannot answer, the exercise may be complete while the learning remains unfinished.
What do studies say about AI-assisted coding and learning?
Results vary because the studies involve different people, tasks, tools, and measures. The table summarizes the most relevant evidence and what each result can—and cannot—tell a learner.

| Study and setting | What was compared | Reported result | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic, 2026; randomized trial with 52 mostly junior software engineers learning the Trio Python library | AI-assisted work versus hand-coding, followed by a quiz | Average quiz scores were 50% with AI and 67% with hand-coding. The difference was 17 percentage points (Cohen’s d=0.738, p=0.01). The time advantage was about two minutes and not statistically significant. | In this task, AI assistance did not translate into stronger immediate quiz mastery. It is one small study of working developers learning an unfamiliar library, not a verdict on all programming education. |
| International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education, 2024; 82 college students | ChatGPT-facilitated programming practice versus self-directed programming | The AI-supported group more often copied and pasted generated code, pasted console messages, and debugged. Programming performance improved, but the difference between groups was not statistically significant. | More interaction with code and a better performance result within a group do not by themselves show that AI caused a learning advantage over independent practice. |
| Computers and Education: Artificial Intelligence, 2026; 275 students in an introductory programming course | Scaffolded tutor, unrestricted ChatGPT, and no-AI control during a 90-minute concurrency exercise | Both AI groups earned higher exercise scores, but neither had greater pre-to-post knowledge gains or code-comprehension advantages. | Immediate exercise performance and evidence of learning can diverge, even in a classroom study designed to compare AI conditions. |
| ACM ITiCSE, 2024; 17 novice programmers | Within-subject comparison of coding with and without GitHub Copilot under time pressure | The abstract reports greater efficiency and reduced effort or workload, with no significant effects on emotion or self-efficacy. | The small sample and time-pressured task limit generalization. A corrigendum was recorded in July 2026, so the abstract supports only this narrow summary. |
These findings should not be forced into one simple verdict. The Anthropic trial asked working developers to learn Trio and then tested them; the classroom studies involved college or introductory-course learners and different forms of practice. A tool can help in one outcome, such as finishing an exercise, without improving another, such as explaining code or retaining a concept. When considering a study—or your own progress—check what was measured before deciding what its result means.
How does the way you use an AI assistant affect learning?
One small experiment suggests that how learners interact with an assistant may matter. In Anthropic’s 2026 Trio trial, participants with stronger quiz mastery tended to ask conceptual questions or request explanations; some lower-scoring interaction patterns involved delegating code production or repeatedly asking the assistant to debug. These were observed patterns, not proof that a particular prompt causes mastery or that every learner will respond the same way.

A request for a complete solution can remove the need to plan, write, and repair code. A request for an explanation, a small hint, or feedback on your own attempt keeps more of those decisions with you.
Scaffolded tools offer examples of this middle ground. CodeAid was deployed in a course of 700 students over a semester, with analysis of about 8,000 uses. It was designed to answer conceptual questions, provide pseudocode with line-by-line explanations, and annotate incorrect student code with suggested fixes rather than reveal complete solutions. The design aimed to support engagement while giving students transparency and control; the deployment does not prove that scaffolding always produces better learning.
A 2025 study of CodeFlow Assistant compared self-regulated Python learning, teaching-assistant support, and an AI tool offering four levels of help: flowcharts, cloze coding, basic code solutions, and advanced solutions. The authors reported higher coding scores for the AI-assisted group, comparable gains in programming-concept understanding, reduced intrinsic and extraneous cognitive loads, increased germane load, and improvement in selected self-regulated learning measures. This is encouraging evidence about that course and tool, not a guarantee that any hinting system will reproduce the result.

Should beginners use AI coding assistants?
Beginners can use them, but should preserve opportunities to make decisions and encounter manageable errors themselves. A beginner who pastes a complete answer may not yet know which parts are essential, whether the code meets the prompt, or how to repair it when it fails. The more of the solution the assistant supplies, the more deliberately the learner needs to check understanding afterward.

Classroom evidence does not support a simple “AI always helps” or “AI always hurts” answer. In the 2024 study of 82 college students, ChatGPT-supported practice involved more copying and pasting as well as more debugging, while the performance difference from self-directed work was not statistically significant. In the 2026 trial of 275 introductory-course participants, AI groups scored higher on the exercise but did not gain more in knowledge or code comprehension. Different settings measured different things, so neither result cancels out the other.
For beginners, the useful decision is not whether the tool is allowed in principle, but what it is doing in a given session. If you are trying to learn loops, functions, data structures, or debugging, try to write and test your own approach before asking for a full implementation. If you are blocked, ask for a concept explanation or one next step, then return to the keyboard and continue.
How do I learn programming fundamentals without relying on AI?
Set aside regular practice in which you attempt problems without code-generating assistance. The following routine is a practical synthesis of the evidence on code reading, debugging, conceptual help, and scaffolding; it has not been validated as one complete protocol by the cited studies.
- State the goal in your own words. Identify the expected input, output, and any constraints before writing code. This gives you a reference for judging whether a suggested solution actually solves the problem.
- Make a first attempt unaided. Write a small plan or pseudocode, then implement the simplest part you can. Do not wait for a polished design; the point is to make your current reasoning visible.
- Write down a hypothesis when you get stuck. Name what you think is failing and what result you expected. That turns a vague request for a fix into a question you can test.
- Run the code and inspect the evidence. Read the error message or unexpected output. Change one thing at a time when possible so you can see what effect your change has.
- Ask for the smallest useful amount of help. Request a concept explanation, a hint, or feedback on your attempt before requesting a complete solution. If you do consult an assistant, ask it to explain its suggestion rather than treating generated code as self-explanatory.
- Close the assistance and reconstruct the idea. Explain the relevant code in your own words, predict what a small change will do, and make that change yourself. If you cannot, return to the concept or example rather than counting a pasted fix as mastery.
This routine is not a test of willpower. It is a way to make sure each practice session contains some retrieval, decision-making, and feedback from running code—the activities that disappear when a tool silently completes the hard part.

Why is debugging especially important when learning with AI?
Debugging is not just a cleanup step after code has been written. It requires reading what a program actually does, comparing it with what you intended, and narrowing down the cause of a mismatch. Those same skills help a programmer judge whether generated code is appropriate rather than merely plausible.
Anthropic’s assessment of the Trio task included debugging, code-reading, and conceptual questions, and its largest score gap between groups was on debugging questions. That makes debugging a particularly relevant skill to protect during AI-assisted work. The result is specific to the trial; it does not establish that every AI tool or assignment produces the same gap.
A 2024 ACM ICER study followed 20 students in an introductory programming course through interviews and debugging think-aloud tasks at three points in a semester. Students valued the chatbot’s information and experience, but did not regard it as their primary source for learning debugging strategies. Their help-seeking included both learning-oriented and less productive patterns. The finding is a reminder that access to debugging help is not the same as acquiring a debugging method.
When using an assistant to troubleshoot, preserve the diagnostic step: describe the expected behavior, inspect the actual behavior, and ask what evidence distinguishes possible causes. After applying a fix, explain why it addresses the cause and test whether the program still works in a nearby case. If the assistant makes several changes at once, you may lose the chance to learn which change mattered.
How can you tell whether you understand code you got help with?
Use checks that require you to do something with the code rather than merely recognize the answer. A correct explanation, a prediction made before running the program, or a small independent modification is stronger evidence of understanding than feeling familiar with a solution you just read.

These are practical self-checks, not a validated grading scale. Their value is that each shifts attention from possession of working code to the reasoning needed to read, adapt, and repair it.
What are the limits of the evidence on AI and programming education?
The evidence is still specific to its participants, tools, tasks, and study designs. The Anthropic trial involved 52 mostly junior developers who had used Python weekly for more than a year, knew AI assistance to some degree, and were unfamiliar with Trio. It tested learning a new library, not every beginner’s first programming course or every professional coding task.
The classroom studies also differ from one another. The 82-student 2024 study was quasi-experimental and compared ChatGPT-facilitated practice with self-directed programming. The 275-participant 2026 trial randomized students among a scaffolded tutor, unrestricted ChatGPT, and no-AI control for a 90-minute concurrency exercise. Their sample sizes, instructional designs, and outcome measures are not interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOther evidence is narrower still. CodeAid’s large deployment describes a particular scaffolded system and course; CodeFlow Assistant’s findings concern a specific Python-learning tool and comparison; the debugging-tutor study included interviews and think-aloud tasks with 20 students. The 2024 Copilot study involved 17 novice programmers working under time pressure, and a corrigendum was recorded in July 2026. Its abstract supports only the limited efficiency and workload summary above.
Accordingly, the studies do not establish a universal causal verdict that AI either improves or damages programming ability. They support a more useful question for learners and instructors: does this use of assistance improve the outcome being assessed, and can the learner still demonstrate the underlying skill independently?
Frequently Asked Questions
How can an instructor check whether students understand AI-assisted code?
Ask students to explain a design choice, predict the result of a small change, or diagnose a bug in code they have seen. These checks focus on reasoning rather than whether the final program runs, though the studies summarized here do not validate one particular assessment format.
What should I ask an AI assistant when I am stuck on a coding concept?
Ask for an explanation or a hint tied to your own attempt, and include what you expected to happen and what happened instead. That gives you something to evaluate and test, rather than only a finished answer to copy.
Do these findings apply to experienced programmers using AI at work?
The Anthropic trial included mostly junior working developers who used Python regularly, but it asked them to learn an unfamiliar library in a study task. The classroom findings involve students and course exercises, so they cannot settle how AI affects experienced developers across real-world projects.
