Yes: learn to read, explain, test, and debug code before relying on AI to do substantial programming for you. You do not have to avoid AI while learning, but you need enough understanding to judge whether its answer is correct, explain what it does, and fix it when it fails. Studies show AI can help beginners make faster progress on specific tasks; they do not show that speed alone builds lasting programming skill.
Why should new developers build coding skills before leaning on AI?
Because producing code and learning to program are different outcomes. An assistant can supply a working-looking solution quickly, but you still need to decide whether it fits the problem, behaves correctly in cases you care about, and can be changed safely. Those decisions depend on skills you build by reading, testing, and debugging code yourself.
That does not mean every beginner must master programming before opening an AI tool. It means AI is most useful as a learning aid when you remain responsible for the reasoning: you describe the problem, ask for targeted help, verify the result, and can explain the final code. If the assistant makes a decision you cannot evaluate, you may have an answer without having learned how to solve the problem.
The distinction matters most when a task changes, a test fails, or the code must work beyond the example that prompted it. A developer who understands the code can investigate and adapt it. Someone who only knows that an AI produced it may not know where to begin.

Does AI help beginners code faster or more accurately?
It can improve short-term performance on particular tasks, but those gains should not be mistaken for proof that independent ability or long-term retention improved.
In a 2023 ACM CHI controlled study of 69 novice learners, people using Codex during training achieved 1.15 times the progress, 0.59 times the errors, and 1.8 times the correctness, while taking 0.57 times the time reported for the comparison group. These figures describe performance during that study’s training tasks; they are not a guarantee that every learner, tool, or project will see the same results.
The later retention result adds an important qualification: the Codex group’s advantage one week later was not statistically significant. So the study supports a real possibility of better immediate task performance, not the stronger claim that using an assistant automatically makes a beginner a more capable programmer over time.

A 2024 ITiCSE study with 17 novice GitHub Copilot users also found higher efficiency and lower workload. Self-efficacy and emotion did not change significantly, while performance and confidence improved with experience using the tool. The small, specific study does not settle how all beginners will feel or perform, but it shows that efficiency, confidence, and understanding are separate things to track.
What can AI performance studies tell you—and what can’t they?
They can show that a particular tool helped a particular group on particular learning activities. They cannot, by themselves, tell you whether you can explain the code, solve a new problem without assistance, retain what you learned, or collaborate effectively in a different course or workplace.
It helps to keep the outcomes separate rather than treating “AI helped” as one simple verdict:

- Workload and collaboration: Did AI reduce effort in a useful way, or did it interrupt shared reasoning or leave you unable to explain the result?
A positive answer on one measure does not settle the others. For example, passing one test says something about the tested behavior; it does not prove that the code handles every relevant input or that you can repair it after a later change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill AI make programming fundamentals unnecessary?
No. Fundamentals are what let you check the assistant’s output and make it useful rather than merely plausible. You do not need encyclopedic knowledge before using AI, but you do need a growing ability to read code, reason about behavior, test assumptions, and notice when an answer does not match the problem.
That need becomes especially visible when communicating with code-generation tools. In a 2024 CHI controlled study of 120 beginning coders, participants struggled both to write and edit prompts and to evaluate generated code. The study’s authors emphasized the continuing importance of teaching technical communication and code understanding. A vague request can produce a response that misses the requirement; limited code understanding makes it harder to spot that mismatch.
Fundamentals also give you a basis for asking a better follow-up. Instead of accepting an answer you cannot assess, you can point to the input that fails, the behavior you expected, or the part of the solution you do not understand. The goal is not to memorize every syntax detail; it is to develop enough mental models to ask informed questions and check the answers.
Is it better to struggle through bugs yourself first?
Try first long enough to form a hypothesis, but do not turn productive effort into an endurance test. Debugging practice matters because the skill involves understanding what the code is meant to do, gathering evidence, and following a method—not simply staring at a screen without help.
A 2023 study in ACM Transactions on Computing Education found that novice debugging success depended on comprehension, evidence-based activity, and workflow practices. Its authors reported that a lack of sustained effort, precision, and methodical processes negatively affected debugging effectiveness. That supports deliberate practice: inspect the failure, make a reasoned guess, and test it, rather than changing code at random.

One 2024 ICER paper describes debugging as a crucial skill that poses significant challenges for novice learners. Difficulty is not evidence that you should never ask for help. A useful boundary is whether you have made an attempt you can describe. If you can state what you expected, what happened instead, and what you suspect, an AI hint can extend your reasoning. If you ask for a complete fix before examining the problem, you may skip the very practice that helps you handle the next bug.
How can you use AI without becoming dependent on it?
Use the assistant in stages: first make a small independent attempt, then request the least amount of help that lets you continue learning. Afterward, verify the result and make sure you can explain it without relying on the assistant’s explanation alone.
- Attempt the problem. Read the requirements and spend enough time trying to understand the task and identify a possible approach. You do not need a complete solution before moving on.
- Write down your understanding. State the goal, the inputs, the expected behavior, and what is going wrong. If you have a suspected cause, name it as a hypothesis rather than presenting it as a fact.
- Sketch a small solution or pseudocode. Break the task into steps you can reason about. Run a test if you have code; if not, work through a small example by hand.
- Ask for focused help first. Request a hint, explanation of a concept, test case, or diagnosis of a specific failure before asking for a full implementation. Narrow questions give you a chance to do the next piece of reasoning yourself.
- Inspect every returned line. Read the code and predict what it will do. Compare that prediction with the stated requirements and the results of tests, including examples that might expose a missed assumption.
- Make the final correction yourself. Apply the change you believe is right, then explain why it addresses the problem. If you cannot explain the fix, ask about the specific step you do not understand instead of treating the output as finished.
- Revisit the idea without AI. Later, try a similar problem independently. This checks whether the concept transferred beyond the original answer.
This sequence is not a ban on complete solutions. A full example can be useful when you are trying to understand a concept or compare approaches. The learning difference is whether you actively inspect, test, and explain it, rather than treating generated code as a substitute for those actions.

It makes the learner’s next reasoning step easier without removing the learner from the work. For instance, assistance might clarify a concept, help turn a requirement into pseudocode, suggest a test, explain an error, or identify a likely cause while leaving the learner to judge and apply the fix.
CodeAid, a system studied in a 2024 CHI deployment, was designed to withhold complete solutions and emphasize concepts, pseudocode, explanations, and fix suggestions. The study analyzed 8,000 usages across a 700-student deployment lasting 12 weeks. The design illustrates one way to support learning; it should not be read as proof that a particular interface or prompt guarantees understanding.
The CodeAid authors described timely, personalized feedback as essential for students learning programming. AI can provide a form of feedback, but the educational value depends on what the feedback helps you do. A hint that helps you inspect your own reasoning is different from an answer you copy without evaluating it.

Can using AI affect pair programming and collaboration?
Yes, it can change how people share reasoning, though the available classroom evidence does not establish that every team will experience the same effect. A 2024 Eindhoven University of Technology case study found that students and a teacher perceived negative effects of ChatGPT on pair programming and collaboration, alongside concerns about code quality and learning.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn a shared task, the point is not only to reach an answer; partners also need to communicate how they reached it and agree on what to do next. If one person asks an assistant for a solution and presents it as settled, the other may have less opportunity to contribute or question assumptions. If a team uses AI, make its role explicit: discuss the request, inspect the response together, and ensure both people can explain the result.
This case study is evidence of a possible classroom problem, not a universal verdict on AI and teamwork. It does, however, make collaboration worth considering alongside speed, correctness, and individual learning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you tell whether your AI use is helping you learn?
Look for evidence that you can do more than reproduce the assistant’s answer. A useful check is to hide the response, explain the solution in your own words, and make a small change to the task. If you cannot explain why the code works or predict how it responds to that change, you have a clear next learning goal.
- You can explain it: Describe the purpose of each important part and how the pieces relate to the requested behavior.
- You can test it: Choose examples that check the expected behavior instead of relying on the assistant’s assurance.
- You can investigate a failure: Compare actual and expected behavior, then identify evidence that supports or weakens your suspected cause.
- You can adapt it: Make a small requirement change and reason through what should change in the code.
- You can repeat the idea: Solve a similar problem later without immediately requesting the same kind of complete answer.
These are practical self-checks, not a formal certification of competence. They are useful because they distinguish a task completed with assistance from a skill you can carry forward.
Should beginners avoid AI until they know how to code?
No. The evidence does not establish that every beginner should avoid AI, or that AI always harms learning. It supports a more practical choice: use AI alongside foundational practice, and make the amount of assistance match what you can currently evaluate.

If you are just starting, prioritize understanding the problem and the returned code, even if that means asking for a hint rather than a finished program. As your ability to read and test code grows, you can take on more of the assistant’s output confidently. The key is not when you first open an AI tool; it is whether its use leaves you better able to reason about the next problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I learn programming if I use AI from my first day?
Yes, provided you treat its answers as material to inspect rather than instructions to accept. Keep some practice sessions or follow-up problems independent so you can tell what you understand without assistance.
What should I ask an AI coding assistant when I am stuck?
Describe the intended behavior, the input you tried, the result you observed, and what you have already checked. Then ask for a hint or a way to test your suspected cause, rather than asking only for replacement code.
Is copying AI-generated code ever useful for learning?
A complete example can help you study a pattern, especially when you trace it, test it, and explain how it meets the requirement. Copying becomes a poor learning shortcut when you cannot assess the code or adapt it afterward.
How do I know when I am relying on AI too much?
A warning sign is being unable to explain or make a small change to code you used, or being unable to start a similar task without a generated solution. Use those moments to practice the missing skill on a smaller problem.
