If a backup succeeds in Terminal but fails when scheduled by launchd, the usual cause is not the backup data or schedule. macOS starts the job with a different user, environment, executable chain and privacy identity; a process denied access to the protected Documents folder returns Operation not permitted. A system LaunchDaemon can also run as the wrong user. Without persistent logs and a freshness check, those failures can repeat for weeks unnoticed.
Fix the incident by identifying the job context, replacing ~ with an absolute path, granting privacy access to the executable that actually opens the files, validating the plist and its permissions, and recording every run and exit status. Then add an alert that detects a missing or stale backup artifact.
Why does a backup work in Terminal but not in launchd?
Terminal and launchd do not provide the same execution context. A command you type runs as your logged-in account, with your shell’s PATH, home directory, current directory and interactive credentials. A scheduled job receives only what its plist and launchd domain provide.
macOS privacy protection (TCC) is another boundary. Documents, Desktop and other locations are protected user data. The system evaluates the process that attempts the file operation, not merely the text of your script. A wrapper may start a backup binary that has a different privacy identity, so authorizing an unrelated executable may change nothing.

Apple describes launchd as the process manager and launchctl as the tool used to load and inspect jobs. Per-user jobs belong in ~/Library/LaunchAgents; system jobs belong in /Library/LaunchDaemons or the corresponding system locations. A LaunchAgent runs in the logged-in user’s context. A LaunchDaemon runs in system context and does not know which users are logged in, which changes $HOME, credentials, GUI availability and the relevant TCC decision.
That combination explains a multi-week gap: the scheduler keeps launching a job, the protected write fails, and nobody receives durable evidence that the command exited unsuccessfully.
Apple’s Terminal documentation explains that launchd manages daemons and agents and can run shell scripts.

Choose a LaunchAgent for a backup that reads a particular user’s files. Use a LaunchDaemon only when a deliberately designed privileged service mediates access for users.
| Property | LaunchAgent | LaunchDaemon |
|---|---|---|
| Typical plist location | ~/Library/LaunchAgents |
/Library/LaunchDaemons |
| Effective context | Logged-in user | System context; not tied to a logged-in user |
$HOME and credentials |
The user’s home and credentials | Often root’s environment unless the service explicitly changes identity |
| GUI and user session | Available within that user’s session | Not assumed to exist |
| Best fit | Backing up that user’s Documents |
System-wide service with an intentional privilege boundary |
Apple’s daemon-lifecycle guidance says a daemon that needs user confirmation should terminate or alert rather than wait for a dialog that no user can see. A daemon that silently assumes a GUI session is therefore fragile by design.
How can I identify the context in which the job runs?
Inspect the plist location and the launchctl domain, then log the effective identity from inside the job. Do not infer the answer from the account that installed the file.

- Find the plist. A path under
~/Library/LaunchAgentsindicates a per-user design; a path under/Library/LaunchDaemonsindicates a system design. - Check the loaded job in the matching domain. For an agent, use the logged-in user’s GUI domain:
launchctl print gui/$(id -u)/com.example.backupFor a daemon, inspect the system domain:
sudo launchctl print system/com.example.backup - Temporarily add identity logging to the script:
printf '%s uid=%s user=%s home=%sn' "$(date -u '+%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ')" "$(id -u)" "$(whoami)" "${HOME:-<unset>}" >> /var/log/example-backup-context.logUse a log destination writable by the chosen context; a user agent should normally write inside that user’s Library or another controlled directory.
- Record the resolved destination as well as the username. A root daemon may expand
~to root’s home, while an agent expands it for the logged-in user.
Why is using ~ in a launchd backup risky?
Tilde expansion is performed by a shell, and the shell’s home environment may differ from the one in Terminal. It can also be absent if the plist executes a binary directly. Use an absolute path in both the plist arguments and the backup command, such as /Users/alice/Documents/, and log that path before the copy starts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAbsolute paths also expose configuration errors immediately. If the intended account changes, update the path deliberately rather than allowing a daemon to follow whichever home directory its context supplies. Keep destination paths absolute too, including mounted volumes.
Which executable should receive Documents or Full Disk Access?
Follow the complete executable chain: the plist’s Program or first ProgramArguments item, any shell wrapper, and the backup binary that opens the files. macOS may evaluate the process making the protected file request, so granting access to a different binary is not guaranteed to help.
- Write down every executable launched by the plist. If it calls
/bin/shor a wrapper script, include that layer and the final backup program. - Open System Settings > Privacy & Security. Review Files and Folders for Documents access and, when the workflow needs broad access across the disk, Full Disk Access.
- Add or enable the executable that actually performs the read or write. A script file is not always the identity macOS authorizes; the interpreter or signed application may be the relevant process.
- Reload the job and test a single file operation. Record the exact error and the executable that emitted it.
Apple’s sandbox documentation notes that backup applications can require access to files wherever they reside. The user must grant that capability in System Settings; a plist, shell command or entitlement cannot silently grant it. Apple also documents resetting privacy decisions when an old denial must be removed before testing again.
An Apple Developer forum report shows the characteristic symptom: a daemon receives Operation not permitted for Desktop or Documents while the same program works in the foreground. Treat that report as a diagnostic example, not as a universal command recipe. Moving operational logs or temporary files outside protected folders can remove a separate denial, but it does not replace authorization for the files being backed up.
How do I validate the plist and filesystem permissions?
First validate syntax and required keys; then check ownership and modes on system-installed files. A malformed argument list and an inaccessible log path can look like a privacy failure.

Check the essential keys
Labelmust match the label you use withlaunchctl.Programor the first item inProgramArgumentsmust be an executable absolute path.- Every argument belongs as its own
ProgramArgumentsarray element; do not rely on shell quoting unless you intentionally invoke a shell. StartCalendarIntervalexpresses a calendar schedule. Confirm the hour, minute and weekday values you intended.StandardOutPathandStandardErrorPathmust point to durable, writable locations.
After editing, unload and reload in the correct domain. A typical per-user cycle is:
launchctl bootout gui/$(id -u) ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.example.backup.plist
launchctl bootstrap gui/$(id -u) ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.example.backup.plist
launchctl kickstart -k gui/$(id -u)/com.example.backup
Use sudo and the system domain only for a deliberately configured daemon. Inspect status immediately after the kickstart rather than assuming that a successful bootstrap means the backup succeeded.
Check ownership and modes
Globally installed daemon plists and their containing directories must be owned by root and not be group- or world-writable. A vendor support example documents helper installation failures caused by incorrect ownership or permissions on /Library/LaunchDaemons; its repair sets that directory to mode 755 and owner root:wheel. Do not apply that command blindly to another path or system. Inspect first:
ls -lde /Library/LaunchDaemons
ls -l /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.example.backup.plist
stat -f '%Su:%Sg %Mp%Lp %N' /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.example.backup.plist
For a user agent, keep the plist and its log directory owned by the user and writable only as broadly as necessary.
How do I make every failed run visible?
Persistent evidence is the difference between a same-day repair and a three-week mystery. Send standard output and standard error to durable files, and have the wrapper record inputs and the backup command’s exit status.
<key>StandardOutPath</key>
<string>/Users/alice/Library/Logs/example-backup.out</string>
<key>StandardErrorPath</key>
<string>/Users/alice/Library/Logs/example-backup.err</string>
A wrapper can make failures explicit:
#!/bin/zsh
set -u
log=/Users/alice/Library/Logs/example-backup-run.log
src=/Users/alice/Documents
printf '%s start uid=%s user=%s home=%s src=%sn' "$(date -u '+%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ')" "$(id -u)" "$(whoami)" "${HOME:-<unset>}" "$src" >> "$log"
/usr/local/bin/backup-tool "$src" /Volumes/Backup/Documents
status=$?
printf '%s exit=%sn' "$(date -u '+%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ')" "$status" >> "$log"
exit "$status"
Use the real backup executable and destination for your system. The important properties are absolute paths, a timestamp, identity, resolved source, and a propagated nonzero exit status.

How do I verify that scheduling and launch constraints are not blocking the job?
Inspect both launchd status and unified logs before changing security settings. A job can be loaded but never reach its program because a path, requirement or launch constraint is unsatisfied.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use
launchctl printin the correct domain and check the last exit status, recent launch time and throttling information. - Review recent launchd and process messages in Console or with the
logcommand, filtering by the job label or executable. - Confirm that the volume is mounted when the calendar event fires and that the destination path exists.
- On newer macOS releases, inspect any launch-environment constraints in the plist. An unmet constraint can prevent launch before your script writes a log.
- Test once with
launchctl kickstart, then wait for the normal calendar event. A manual success does not prove that the scheduled environment is correct.
Apple recommends launchd for timed jobs and documents StartCalendarInterval for calendar schedules. Sleep and volume availability can alter when a calendar event is serviced, so the health check should measure artifact freshness rather than merely counting launches.
How do I detect a silent backup gap automatically?
Check the result, not just the schedule. After a successful backup, create or update a known artifact such as a manifest containing the completion time and a list or checksum of expected data. A separate checker should alert when that artifact is older than the allowed interval or when the last recorded exit status is nonzero.
Minimum health-check logic
- Read the manifest’s modification time or embedded completion timestamp.
- Compare it with the current time and the maximum acceptable interval for your schedule.
- Verify that the destination volume is mounted and the manifest is readable.
- Alert through a channel independent of the backup process, such as email, a monitoring service or a local notification that is itself supervised.
- Record the failed check with the job label and last exit status.
Keep the checker outside the protected source path so a Documents denial cannot hide both the backup and its alarm. Run a restore test periodically; a fresh timestamp alone cannot prove that files can be recovered.

Fix the context and privacy problem first. If you still need a product, evaluate its architecture and verification features rather than assuming that a larger destination disk solves a TCC denial.

What should I do right now after discovering a three-week gap?
- Stop deleting or rotating the last known good backup until you know which dates are complete.
- Run the backup manually and capture its output, exit status and destination artifact.
- Identify whether the scheduled job is an agent or daemon and record its effective user and
$HOME. - Replace tilde paths, authorize the responsible executable in Privacy & Security, and correct plist or directory permissions.
- Reload the job, kick it once, and inspect logs and
launchctlstatus. - Compare the resulting artifact with the source and perform a small restore before declaring recovery.
- Enable the independent freshness check and test the alert by intentionally causing a controlled failure.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Full Disk Access need to be granted to launchd itself?
No. launchd is the scheduler, not usually the process opening your files. Grant the capability to the signed app, helper, interpreter or other executable that macOS evaluates for the actual file operation, and confirm the decision in the privacy settings for the same user context.
Will a LaunchAgent run when nobody is logged in?
A LaunchAgent is tied to a user session, so it is not a substitute for an always-on system service. If backups must run before login, design a daemon or vendor helper intentionally, with explicit user selection and access mediation rather than assuming a daemon can see every home directory.
Can I fix this by disabling System Integrity Protection?
No. SIP changes are neither required nor an appropriate remedy for a TCC denial, wrong user, or malformed plist. Restore the intended execution context and user-granted privacy authorization instead; weakening platform protections can create a larger security problem.
Why does a calendar job sometimes run late after the Mac sleeps?
launchd services calendar events according to system availability, and a sleeping Mac cannot execute the process at the scheduled instant. Design monitoring around the age of the last verified artifact, not an assumption that every event starts at an exact wall-clock minute.
How can I prove the backup is restorable, not merely recent?
Select representative files, restore them to a separate location, and open or checksum them. Include permissions and metadata when those matter to your recovery plan, and record the restore date so a passing timestamp is not mistaken for a tested recovery.
