Laufey is Faye—the same character seen through two names in God of War. She is a Jötunn (Giant) warrior from Jötunheim, Kratos’s second wife and Atreus’s mother. Atreus is Loki, the name Laufey wanted to give him at birth. She is already dead when God of War (2018) begins, but her funeral instructions send Kratos and Atreus to Jötunheim and expose the family’s Giant heritage. Ragnarök adds her dreams, her destroyed prophecy mural and her battle with Thor. A game revealed on 2 June 2026, God of War Laufey, follows her soul immediately after the funeral pyre.
Is Faye the same person as Laufey?
Yes. Faye is the name Laufey uses while living in Midgard; Laufey is her Giant name, and Mimir identifies her as Laufey the Just. The two names do not describe different women.
She hides her Jötunn identity while living in the Wildwoods with Kratos and Atreus. Kratos either believes or chooses to tell Atreus that his mother was mortal. The truth appears only when the family reaches Jötunheim and finds the Giants’ account of Faye’s life.
Among the Jötnar, Laufey was remembered as a protector who helped the weak and resisted Odin and the Aesir. Later descriptions call her the last protector of the Giants. “Golden Hand of the Jötnar,” which appears in one 2026 recap, is not established as an official epithet; Laufey the Just is the safer canon description.

What happens to Faye in God of War (2018)?
Faye dies before the opening scene. The game starts with Kratos and Atreus preparing her body for cremation, so players know her through objects, memories and the route she designed rather than through a living flashback.
Her final request is precise: burn her body and scatter the ashes from the highest peak in all the Nine Realms. That summit is in Jötunheim, her homeland. Reaching it is the central objective of the 2018 story.

Faye tells Kratos to cut particular trees marked with a glowing golden hand. Those trees form part of a protective stave around the family’s home. Removing them opens the route and alerts the gods that the protection has fallen.
The markings also explain why Baldur comes looking for Faye. Odin sends him to find her, unaware that she has already died. The gold handprints that guide Kratos and Atreus through Midgard are therefore more than navigation signs: Faye placed them as a planned trail for the journey she foresaw.
What do the ashes reveal?
At the summit, the pair discover that Jötunheim is Faye’s homeland and that she was a Frost Giant. The mural there depicts the journey they have just completed, including Faye’s argument with her own people. After the ashes are scattered, Mimir names her Laufey the Just, while Brok and Sindri confirm that they knew Atreus had Giant blood because of their connection to Faye.
Who was Faye before she died?
Faye was not simply a hidden Giant living as a farmer. She was a warrior, a guide and the person who arranged the first game’s entire chain of events.

Her family with Kratos
Faye and Kratos met when both were exhausted by war. They initially fought, then stopped fighting and built a life together. Faye knew Kratos was a god and kept that fact from Atreus. She also understood that the gods were hunting the Jötnar, so she concealed her heritage and cooperated with Týr to hide the Realm Tower’s route to Jötunheim.

She raised Atreus more actively than Kratos did. She taught him hunting, archery and the languages needed to read signs across the Nine Realms. She made his Talon Bow and encouraged him to survive in the forest. Kratos named the boy Atreus after a Spartan soldier, but Faye wanted the name Loki; the Giant mural confirms that Loki is the name his mother chose.
Her foresight
Faye saw enough of the future to prepare for her own absence. The marked trees, the broken stave, the path through the realms and the destination in Jötunheim all form one plan. Her foresight does not mean she controls every later choice: the revelations in Ragnarök show that she deliberately destroyed part of the Giants’ prophecy so Kratos and Atreus could still choose.
How does God of War reveal that Atreus is Loki?
The reveal comes in Jötunheim rather than through a spoken confession. The Giants’ mural calls the boy Loki, while the family has been using the name Atreus. Kratos and Atreus then understand that Faye was a Giant and that Atreus is the figure known in Norse stories as Loki.

Her lessons in language, her protection of the Jötnar and the path to the Giant realm were preparations for Atreus to understand a heritage Kratos did not know how to explain. The game keeps the name hidden for much of the adventure because an early reveal would have made the Loki connection obvious to players familiar with Norse mythology.
What weapons and powers did Laufey have?
Faye’s abilities combine Giant magic, foresight and skilled weapon fighting. She is not a weaker version of Kratos. The developers describe her as agile and fluid, with magic integrated into her body and relationship with nature rather than treated as equipment.
| Ability or item | What it means in the story |
|---|---|
| Leviathan Axe | Brok and Sindri forged the axe for Faye. Kratos inherits it after her death, and Sindri initially suspects that he took or stole her weapon. |
| Talon Bow | Faye made the bow for Atreus and taught him to use it. |
| Giant foresight | She anticipated the ash journey and laid out its route, while later rejecting a fixed prophecy that would have trapped her family. |
| Protective stave | The ward around the Wildwoods hid the family. Cutting the marked trees dismantled it. |
| Nature and soul magic | Later descriptions connect her magic to the natural world, protective wards and soul manipulation. Cory Barlog says magic is “a part of her,” unlike Kratos’s tool-like use of it. |
Kratos says Faye fought beautifully. Game director Ariel Lawrence describes her as less physically solid than Kratos but “every bit as much of a warrior.” Her style is faster and more fluid, while Kratos relies on overwhelming force and endurance.
Did Faye really fight Thor?
Yes. Ragnarök establishes that Faye fought Thor in Vanaheim before the events of the 2018 game. The battle ended in a stalemate between Mjölnir and the Leviathan Axe, but the collateral damage destroyed a valley, a village and its inhabitants.
The surviving consequences can be found in the Crater in northern Vanaheim, where spirits remain trapped. GameDaily’s 2 June 2026 summary describes the clash as a fight to a standstill; GameRant’s earlier 2022 account suggested a duel that never happened because Faye died first, but the later game supersedes that interpretation.

The fight also explains why Thor noticed Faye as a serious threat. She was not merely defending herself against an isolated attack: her conflict with the Aesir had reached the level of a direct contest with their strongest enforcer.
What does Ragnarök add to Faye’s story?
Ragnarök lets Faye speak through Kratos’s dreams three years into Fimbulwinter. These scenes turn the idealized memory of a dead wife into a more complicated portrait of a person making difficult ethical choices.
Her advice to Kratos
During a hunt, Faye argues that if someone can limit harm, they should act even when the danger has not yet reached their own home. At Atreus’s birth, she tells Kratos that their son should hear his father’s voice and that Kratos is not identical to his past failures. Her recurring challenge is summarized in the instruction, “we must be better.”

She also jokes about Kratos’s wish to entomb her according to Greek custom. A rotting corpse would not be a useful substitute for a living relationship, she tells him, reinforcing that the pyre is meant to send him forward rather than keep him anchored to her body.
Why did Faye destroy a mural?
After Ragnarök, Angrboda leads Kratos and Atreus to a hidden Jötunn shrine. There they learn that Faye destroyed the third mural depicting Atreus’s future. She opposed the idea that a prophecy should dictate every choice her family made.
Her destruction of the mural explains the first image in the shrine, where she is shown arguing with other Giants. Faye was protecting her family not by hiding every truth, but by removing the part of the prediction that could turn their lives into a script.
What does Faye say about grief?
In one dream, she tells Kratos: “To grieve deeply is to have loved fully. Open your heart to the world as you opened it to me, and you will find every reason to keep living in it.” The line, quoted in the 2 June 2026 IGN recap, reframes the ash journey as an act of continued life rather than a monument to death.

The mythological Laufey is far less developed than the game character. In Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda, commonly dated to around 1220, she is named primarily as Loki’s mother and Fárbauti’s consort. Loki is repeatedly called Laufeyjarson, “Laufey’s son,” an unusual matronymic in a culture where names more often identified a father.

The texts also use the name Nál for Loki’s mother. Old Norse nál means “needle,” which has led to interpretations of a slender or fragile figure. The surviving material gives her almost no independent narrative, and later readers disagree about whether she should be classified as an Aesir goddess or a giantess. The Eddas do not provide the warrior biography created for the game.
| Detail | Norse texts | God of War |
|---|---|---|
| Names | Laufey; sometimes Nál | Faye; Laufey the Just |
| Best known as | Loki’s mother and Fárbauti’s partner | Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother |
| Story role | A brief genealogical figure | A legendary Jötunn warrior, protector and strategist |
| Partner | Fárbauti | Kratos |
| Child | Loki, called Laufeyjarson | Atreus, later revealed as Loki |
| Separate figure in game canon | Nál can be a name for Loki’s mother in the Edda | Nál is a different character, the wife of Bergelmir; she is not Faye’s alias |
The adaptation keeps the mother-of-Loki connection but expands everything around it. Santa Monica Studio’s version makes Faye the person who gives Loki a childhood, protects the Jötnar and shapes the Norse saga before the player sees her face.
What is God of War Laufey, and when does it take place?
God of War Laufey was revealed at the PlayStation State of Play on 2 June 2026. It is not a conventional prequel about a young Faye before she meets Kratos. The story begins at the moment her body is burned in the opening of God of War (2018), then follows her soul into the Everywhen, an afterlife populated by gods from multiple mythologies.

Instead, she finds that the plans she made for Kratos and Atreus are threatened by conflicts among dead gods. The reveal footage and IGN interviews identify Sekhmet, associated with Egyptian plagues, vengeance and the sun, and Begtse, a Mongolian war god, as enemies. Her companions include Phranque, a cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian voiced by Perlina Lau. Phranque gives Faye an unusual sword.
Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye. The game is announced for PS5, but no official release date or physical-edition details have been confirmed. Cory Barlog says the story runs in parallel with the timelines of God of War (2018) and Ragnarök and is part of the same continuity, not a detached side story.
Its central question is what happens to gods after death. The Everywhen also lets the series connect mythologies without replacing Faye’s established history: the funeral, the ash journey, her family and the Thor battle remain the foundation.

Faye and Kratos are presented as equals in commitment and danger, not as identical fighters. Their contrasting styles explain why her axe and her magic feel different in his hands.

Lawrence describes the new game’s combat as a blend of Greek-era agility, Norse-era companions and closer combat. That design follows the difference already established in the story: Faye’s strength comes from movement, magic and preparation as much as from physical power.

How did Laufey die?
The games never state a medical or combat cause. Faye clearly expected her death: she arranged the cremation, marked the trees and gave Kratos a destination that could only be reached after she was gone. Articles that call it an unspecified illness are offering an inference, not an in-game diagnosis.
Nothing in the 2026 reveal confirms a cause for the Midgard death. What is established is the function of that death: it starts the journey that reveals Atreus’s identity, reconnects him with the Jötnar and forces Kratos to confront the life Faye had been planning without him.
Why is Laufey so important to the Norse God of War story?
Faye is the hidden architect of the Norse saga. Her death supplies the immediate objective, her axe gives Kratos a physical link to her, her teachings prepare Atreus for the Nine Realms and her foresight explains why the family reaches Jötunheim at exactly the point the story requires.
Her later revelations prevent that architecture from becoming simple predestination. Faye knew enough to prepare a path, yet she destroyed the mural that could have fixed her family’s choices. That tension—planning for the future while defending the right to choose it—is what makes the game’s Laufey more than a mythological name attached to Loki.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Laufey the same as Faye in God of War?
Yes. Faye is Laufey’s Midgard alias, while Laufey the Just is the name associated with her Giant identity. The game uses both names for one person, not for two versions of Atreus’s mother.
Did Kratos know that Faye was a Giant?
Kratos knew Faye’s true nature, but he did not tell Atreus that she was Jötunn. His silence protects the boy from the gods hunting the Giants, while also leaving Atreus without the context needed to understand his own name and abilities.
Why is Loki called Atreus in God of War?
Faye wanted to name her son Loki, but Kratos chose Atreus after a Spartan soldier he respected. The name Atreus is therefore a deliberate family choice rather than a contradiction of the Giant mural, which identifies the same boy as Loki.
What does Laufeyjarson mean?
Laufeyjarson means “Laufey’s son.” Norse naming usually emphasized a father’s name, so the matronymic is one reason mythologists pay attention to Laufey despite her very small role in the surviving stories.
Is God of War Laufey a prequel about her life with Kratos?
Not in the usual sense. The announced game starts when Faye’s body is burned at the beginning of the 2018 story and follows her soul into the Everywhen, with events running alongside the established Norse-era timeline.
