For local AI, buy memory first. Dedicated GPU VRAM on a Windows laptop, or total unified memory on an Apple Silicon Mac, determines which model sizes can load without constant offloading. As a practical starting point, target 8GB VRAM for small experiments, 12–16GB for an everyday 8B–14B assistant, and 24GB or more for roughly 20B–30B models. Pair that with at least 16GB system RAM, 32GB for comfortable daily use, a fast 1TB SSD, and a processor that supports your software.
Those numbers are planning tiers rather than guarantees. Quantization, context length, model architecture, drivers, laptop power limits, cooling and the applications running beside the model can change both whether a model fits and how quickly it responds.
Which laptop specifications matter most for local AI?
The order is usable model memory, system memory, sustained cooling and power, software compatibility, then storage and CPU speed. A high-end processor cannot compensate for a GPU that does not have enough VRAM to hold the model. Likewise, a large SSD gives you room for model files but does not make an under-specced GPU capable of loading a larger model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- VRAM or unified memory: the primary capacity limit for GPU-accelerated inference.
- System RAM: needed by the operating system, model-loading process, CPU offload and other applications.
- Memory bandwidth and sustained power: affect how fast the model can read weights after it fits.
- Software support: includes the operating-system architecture, AVX2 on Windows x64 and the driver/backend combination.
- SSD capacity: determines how many model variants, caches and datasets you can keep locally.
When comparing two laptops, verify the exact configuration rather than relying on a processor or GPU family name. A laptop graphics chip can have less VRAM and a lower power limit than a desktop card with a similar name.

How much VRAM do I need for a 7B, 14B or 27B model?
Use the model’s usable memory requirement, not only its parameter count. The following tiers reflect current guidance from NVIDIA’s local-AI playbook and Lenovo’s AI/ML laptop recommendations; they assume a sensible quantization and leave room for the operating system and applications.
| Intended use | Recommended laptop memory | Model examples | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Experimentation and small chat models | 8GB dedicated VRAM, or 16GB system/unified memory; 512GB SSD minimum | Qwen 3.5 4B and roughly 3B–8B models | Good for learning, short conversations and lightweight tools. Larger contexts or multiple apps can force offload. |
| Comfortable daily local assistant | 12–16GB dedicated VRAM, 32GB system RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD | Qwen 3.5 9B, Gemma 4 12B and roughly 8B–14B models | More headroom for longer prompts, coding sessions and background applications. |
| Larger local models | 24GB or more VRAM, or a large unified-memory configuration; 32–64GB or more total RAM | Qwen 3.6 27B and other roughly 20B–30B models | Can keep a substantially larger model resident, but laptop thermals and power limits become important. |
| Very large models | 48GB or more VRAM, a multi-GPU workstation, or 64GB or more unified memory | Some 30B–70B experimentation | Usually involves major laptop compromises, partial CPU offload or a desktop-class setup. |
A “7B” or “14B” label is not a guarantee that every version fits in the same amount of memory. Quantization stores weights at fewer bits and can make a larger model fit, but lower-bit versions can trade away some output quality and may behave differently with particular backends. Context length, vision components, adapters and runtime overhead also consume memory.
Is 16GB of system RAM enough?
Sixteen gigabytes is an entry point, not a comfortable universal target. LM Studio’s current requirements call for at least 16GB on Windows and 16GB or more on Apple Silicon. Lenovo places 16–32GB in the light-work range, while HP recommends 32–64GB for running local AI models and image-generation workloads.
Choose 16GB when
- You are testing small models and can close browsers and other memory-heavy applications.
- Your dedicated GPU has enough VRAM to keep most model work off system RAM.
- You accept that model loading, CPU offload and long contexts may feel constrained.
Choose 32GB when
- You want a daily assistant for coding, documents or multiple sessions.
- You plan to use 12–16GB VRAM and still run a browser, editor, containers or development tools.
- You want practical headroom for model caches and occasional CPU offload.
Choose 64GB or more when
- You are targeting 20B–30B models, large context windows or image-generation workflows.
- You are using unified memory, where the same pool must serve both the model and the operating system.
- The laptop has non-upgradable memory and you want to keep it for several years.
Check whether RAM is soldered before buying. A laptop advertised with 16GB may not offer a later upgrade, turning an apparently inexpensive configuration into a hard limit.
How does Apple Silicon unified memory change the calculation?
Apple Silicon combines CPU and GPU memory in one pool. There is no separate VRAM number to add: the configured unified-memory amount is the practical ceiling for the model, macOS and every open application together. LM Studio supports M1 through M4 chips and recommends 16GB or more.
For example, a 16GB machine can run a small quantized model, but the operating system and a long context reduce what remains available. A 32GB or 64GB configuration gives a larger model more room without moving data across a separate PCIe link, although the chip’s memory bandwidth and thermal design still affect sustained speed. Compare total unified memory and memory bandwidth between Apple configurations rather than trying to translate them into a nominal desktop VRAM figure.
What GPU details matter besides the VRAM number?
Once capacity is sufficient, compare memory bandwidth, sustained graphics power and cooling. Inference repeatedly reads model weights, so a laptop that can maintain its rated power for long sessions may outperform a thinner machine with the same GPU name but a lower power limit.

Verify the exact GPU configuration
- Dedicated VRAM capacity, not the shared-memory figure shown by a generic listing.
- Configured graphics power limit or TGP, if the manufacturer publishes it.
- Cooling design and whether performance drops after several minutes of sustained load.
- The driver stack supported by your chosen backend, such as LM Studio, Ollama or llama.cpp.
Do not infer laptop performance from a desktop benchmark or from the GPU family name alone. The cited guidance establishes memory tiers, not a universal tokens-per-second result, and no controlled laptop speed figure should be treated as a guaranteed outcome.
Does the CPU matter for local model inference?
The CPU is secondary when the model fits in GPU memory, but it still matters for compatibility, preprocessing and CPU-only operation. LM Studio requires AVX2 on x64 Windows systems; confirm that support before installing it on an older machine.
CPU-only inference can work for small models, yet it is substantially slower than keeping the model in GPU memory. A current multi-core processor helps with prompt processing and models that must be partly offloaded, but spending money on the fastest CPU while choosing too little VRAM is usually the wrong trade-off for local LLM use.
How much SSD storage should a local-AI laptop have?
Storage affects how many models and supporting files you can retain. Lenovo lists a 512GB SSD as a light-use minimum and a 1TB primary SSD plus additional working storage for data-science workloads. HP lists 1TB or more for local AI models and image generation.
Leave free space for the operating system, applications, model caches, quantized variants and temporary downloads. A single model may have several versions for different memory budgets, so a 1TB drive is a more practical starting point for regular experimentation than a 512GB drive, even when both can launch a small model.
Concrete storage examples
Android Developers’ local-model documentation lists Gemma E4B with 12GB of total RAM and 4GB of storage, while Gemma 26B MoE is listed with 24GB of RAM and 17GB of storage. Those figures describe the documented model packages and minimum environment, not a universal allowance for every runtime; reserve additional disk space for the operating system, caches and alternate quantizations.
Do NPU TOPS ratings replace a dedicated GPU?
No. A 40-plus-TOPS NPU is part of the minimum specification for Copilot+ features, but NPU marketing does not establish that a laptop can run a substantive local LLM. The current laptop guidance continues to emphasize dedicated GPU VRAM or abundant unified memory for model weights.

Which laptop tier fits your use case?
Use the following as a buying checklist, then verify the exact regional configuration and backend support.
| Use case | Minimum sensible target | Safer target for longevity | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learning and occasional chat | 8GB VRAM or 16GB unified/system memory; 512GB SSD | 8–12GB VRAM and 32GB RAM; 1TB SSD | Long contexts and multitasking may require smaller models. |
| Daily coding or document assistant | 12GB VRAM and 32GB RAM; 1TB NVMe SSD | 16GB VRAM and 32–64GB RAM | Higher-memory configurations cost more and may be heavier. |
| 20B–30B experimentation | 24GB VRAM or a large unified-memory configuration; 32GB RAM | 24GB or more VRAM and 64GB RAM | Thermals, battery life and chassis size become significant. |
| Very large-model work | 48GB or more VRAM, multi-GPU or 64GB-plus unified memory | Workstation-class hardware | A laptop may need partial offload and will not match a desktop workstation. |
How do I check a laptop before buying or installing a model?
- Write down the exact memory configuration. Record dedicated VRAM, system RAM or unified memory, and whether either can be upgraded.
- Match memory to the model class. Use the 8GB, 12–16GB and 24GB-plus tiers as a starting point, then check the model publisher’s stated requirements for your quantization and context length.
- Confirm storage headroom. Prefer a 1TB SSD for regular experimentation and check whether a second drive or external storage is supported.
- Check operating-system requirements. On Windows x64, verify AVX2 for LM Studio and confirm that your NVIDIA or other GPU driver is supported by the selected backend.
- Inspect sustained-power information. Look for the laptop’s configured GPU power limit, cooling reviews or manufacturer specifications rather than assuming every version of a GPU performs alike.
- Plan a clean test. After installation, load the intended quantized model with your normal context length while monitoring memory use. Close unrelated applications if the runtime reports out-of-memory errors.
What usually goes wrong, and how can you fix it?
The model does not load
The most common cause is insufficient VRAM or unified memory. Choose a smaller or more aggressively quantized variant, reduce context length, close other applications, or enable CPU offload if the runtime supports it; expect slower responses when weights leave GPU memory.
The laptop becomes slow after loading
Check whether the model spilled into system RAM or swap. Moving to a configuration with more VRAM, adding system RAM where possible, or selecting a smaller quantization is more effective than changing only the CPU.
Performance falls during a long session
That pattern points to thermal or power limits. Use the manufacturer’s performance mode, keep air intakes clear and compare sustained rather than short benchmark behavior. A thinner laptop with the same nominal GPU can throttle sooner.
The application refuses to install
Confirm the operating-system architecture and CPU requirements first. On x64 Windows, LM Studio’s AVX2 requirement is a hard compatibility check; also verify that the selected GPU backend and driver are supported.
Storage fills unexpectedly
Remove unused model variants and caches, or move the model directory to a larger internal or external SSD. Keep enough free space for temporary downloads and updates instead of filling the drive to its advertised capacity.
How should you balance price, portability and model size?
Decide the largest model you genuinely need, then buy enough memory to keep it resident with your normal context and applications. More VRAM generally improves the chance of a smooth experience, but it can increase chassis size, weight, cost and fan noise. A portable 16GB system that runs a smaller model consistently may be more useful than a heavier 24GB laptop that throttles or cannot be carried where you work.
Because laptop prices, inventory, regional configurations and GPU power limits change quickly, there is no permanent single “best-value” model. Compare the exact VRAM, RAM, SSD, power limit and cooling design of each listing before checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run a local model while I am offline?
Yes, once the runtime and model files are already installed locally, inference does not require an active connection. Downloads, model updates and some optional integrations still need internet access, so set up and test the complete environment before traveling or disconnecting.
Does a longer context window need more laptop memory?
Yes. The conversation or document context is held alongside the model weights, so increasing it can consume enough additional memory to trigger CPU offload or an out-of-memory error. If a model barely fits, start with a shorter context and increase it only while monitoring use.
Is a laptop with upgradeable RAM worth prioritizing?
It can extend the useful life of a system, especially when the initial configuration is 16GB. However, an upgrade cannot add dedicated GPU VRAM, so choose the required graphics-memory tier first and treat future RAM expansion as a bonus.
Why can two laptops with the same GPU name load models differently?
Laptop manufacturers can configure different VRAM capacities, power limits and cooling systems under the same GPU family. The exact memory amount and sustained thermal behavior determine practical results, not the name printed on the product page alone.
