Verdict: Krix’s Series MX is a purpose-built cinema system for a dedicated room, not a conventional living-room speaker upgrade. The MX-20 Mk2, MX-30i, and MX-40i are designed to sit in a constructed false or baffle wall behind an acoustically transparent screen, using high-sensitivity horn loading and separate passive subwoofer modules to produce cinema-level dynamics. The MX-20 Mk2 is the best-documented model: its LCR section is rated at 97 dB sensitivity, 8 ohms, 40 Hz–20 kHz, and 100–500 watts RMS recommended amplification, while its subwoofer module is rated at 25–200 Hz and 200–1,400 watts RMS.

That architecture can be exceptional when the room, screen, amplification, bass management, and calibration are planned together. It is a poor fit if you cannot build a false wall, use an acoustically transparent screen, accommodate modules weighing up to 45 kg, or arrange professional integration. This review explains what the published specifications establish, what they do not, and how to decide whether an MX system suits your theater.

What is the Krix Series MX system?

The Series MX is a modular, behind-screen loudspeaker system for dedicated home cinemas. The current family consists of the MX-20 Mk2, MX-30i, and MX-40i. Rather than placing three conventional speakers below or beside a display, the installation manual calls for left, center, and right screen modules plus two passive subwoofer modules to be flush-mounted into a false wall. An acoustically transparent screen then sits in front of that wall, allowing dialogue and effects to appear to originate from the image.

Krix describes the design as combining an infinite-baffle-wall concept with horn and waveguide loading. The speaker faces become continuous with the wall, and absorbent material on the front of the modules helps reduce reflections in the cavity behind the screen. The manual’s stated goal is to reproduce “the visual experience and dynamic impact of real cinema at home.” That is an installation philosophy, not a claim that every room will automatically sound like a commercial theater.

What the MX-20 Mk2 adds

Krix says the MX-20 Mk2 uses a new 12-inch low-frequency driver, a patented constant-directivity horn with a one-inch compression driver, and increased power handling for greater dynamics and clarity. The published specification sheet describes the LCR module with a 255 mm (10-inch) paper-cone woofer and a 26 mm (1-inch) doped-fabric dome coupled to a 90-by-40-degree short-throw waveguide. The apparent difference between the “12-inch” product description and the 255 mm driver listed on the specification sheet should be clarified with a dealer before ordering; the documents use those descriptions differently.

Are Krix MX speakers suitable for a dedicated home theater?

Yes—provided the room is designed around a false wall, an acoustically transparent screen, substantial amplifier headroom, and professional calibration. The system is not a drop-in replacement for bookshelf or floorstanding speakers in an untreated multipurpose room.

Why the false wall matters

The false wall provides the mounting depth and baffle surface that the MX architecture expects. It also hides the LCR and subwoofer modules so the screen can occupy the visual focus. Krix’s manual says the modular approach minimizes the depth taken from the room, but “minimal” does not mean zero: the wall still has to be engineered for the module dimensions, screen frame, access, ventilation, wiring, and structural load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why an acoustically transparent screen is required

The center channel must be behind the picture rather than below it if dialogue is to remain anchored to actors’ faces. An acoustically transparent screen also permits the left and right channels to be placed at cinema-like height and spacing. A conventional television or non-perforated projection screen would force the speakers outside the image and defeat the central premise of the installation.

Where the system is a poor match

  • Rooms that must retain a flat wall with no permanent construction.
  • Setups using a television or a screen that cannot pass sound.
  • Small rooms where the minimum recommended screen size and speaker depth overwhelm the seating distance.
  • Installations without a realistic way to provide high-current amplification and independent subwoofer processing.
  • Projects where no qualified dealer or integrator is available to design the wall and calibrate the system.

What are the published MX-20 specifications?

The MX-20 is the only Series MX model for which the supplied official material provides a complete set of numerical specifications. Those figures are useful for system planning, but they are not independent laboratory measurements.

Component Published specification Planning implication
MX-20 LCR frequency range 40 Hz–20 kHz Use bass management and the dedicated subwoofer modules for the octave below 40 Hz.
MX-20 LCR sensitivity 97 dB (2.83 V/1 m) High sensitivity reduces the amplifier power needed for a given sound-pressure level compared with many conventional hi-fi designs.
MX-20 LCR impedance 8 ohms Choose an amplifier rated for the number of channels and listening level you intend to use.
Recommended LCR amplifier power 100–500 W RMS The range is broad; the right choice depends on listening distance, headroom, room gain, and limiter behavior.
MX-20 LCR drivers One 255 mm (10-inch) paper-cone woofer; one 26 mm (1-inch) doped-fabric dome with 90×40 short-throw waveguide The horn/waveguide controls directivity and supports high output from a relatively efficient design.
MX-20 subwoofer range 25–200 Hz The sub module is intended to cover the low-frequency range below the LCR crossover region.
MX-20 subwoofer sensitivity 96 dB Still efficient, but amplifier and enclosure limits remain important at very low frequencies.
MX-20 subwoofer impedance 8 ohms Check the amplifier’s load rating when driving multiple subwoofer channels.
Recommended subwoofer amplifier power 200–1,400 W RMS Use a dedicated, appropriately limited amplifier rather than assuming an AV receiver can supply the required output.
LCR module weight 31 kg each The false wall needs proper framing and safe handling during installation.
Subwoofer module weight 45 kg each Plan lifting, mounting, and service access before the wall is closed.

The 97 dB sensitivity figure is specified at 2.83 volts and one meter. It should not be read as a guaranteed in-room sound-pressure level at every seat. Room absorption, distance, crossover settings, equalization, amplifier clipping, and the number of channels playing simultaneously all affect the result.

What room size and screen do you need for MX-20?

Krix’s MX-20 specification sheet gives minimum screen guidance of 105 inches in a 16:9 aspect ratio or 130 inches in a 21:9 aspect ratio. Those are minimum screen sizes, not universal recommendations for every seating distance. The image width, viewing angle, row spacing, projector throw, and speaker-to-seat distance should be modeled together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

16:9 rooms

A 105-inch diagonal 16:9 screen is approximately 92 inches wide. The screen must leave room for the false wall, frame, masking, acoustic treatment, and side clearances. If the front row is very close, that minimum can produce an overly wide field of view; if the room is deep, it may look undersized.

21:9 rooms

The 130-inch 21:9 guidance is intended for a wider cinema presentation. Its height is lower relative to width than a 16:9 screen, so seating and projector placement need to be checked for both widescreen films and 16:9 material. Variable masking can preserve composition without moving the loudspeakers.

How to validate a proposed room

  1. Measure the finished room, not the unfinished shell. Include wall treatments, risers, door swings, and equipment racks.
  2. Choose the seating distance and calculate the screen width and viewing angle from that position.
  3. Reserve the front-wall depth for the MX modules, structural framing, acoustic fill, screen frame, and wiring service loops.
  4. Confirm that the projector can fill the selected screen at the available throw distance and brightness.
  5. Place the LCR acoustic centers at the intended screen height and verify that every seat has a clear path to the screen and speakers.
  6. Have the integrator model bass modes, subwoofer placement, and access panels before construction begins.

How much amplifier power does Krix MX need?

The MX-20 LCR specification recommends 100–500 watts RMS per channel, while each subwoofer module is assigned a 200–1,400-watt RMS recommendation. The correct point in those ranges depends on distance, target playback level, crest-factor headroom, the number of channels driven, and the amplifier’s behavior into an 8-ohm load.

What the 105 dB design example means

Krix’s Home Cinema Design Basics guide uses the 97 dB MX-20 sensitivity to calculate approximately 160 watts at 5 meters and 300 watts at 7 meters to reach 105 dB SPL for the main speakers. These are design-guide calculations, not independent laboratory measurements. They illustrate why a high-sensitivity cinema speaker can reach reference-like peaks with less power than an 88 dB hi-fi speaker at the same distance, but they do not guarantee 105 dB at every seat.

A practical amplifier allocation

  • LCR: Use three identical amplifier channels with enough continuous output for the longest listening distance and desired headroom. A 100-watt channel may be adequate in a short room at moderate levels, while a larger room benefits from the upper part of the 100–500-watt range.
  • Subwoofers: Treat the 200–1,400-watt recommendation as a system-design range, not a mandate to install 1,400 watts regardless of room size. The amplifier must include suitable protection, limiter settings, and thermal capacity.
  • Processing: Use an AV processor or receiver with configurable crossover, delay, polarity, equalization, and independent subwoofer outputs. The modules are passive, so amplification and processing are external.
  • Headroom: Avoid sizing an amplifier so close to clipping that loud transients trigger audible compression. High sensitivity lowers average power demand but does not remove peak-power requirements.

How does the MX-20 compare with MX-30i and MX-40i?

The current family has three models, but the supplied official material publishes complete numerical data only for MX-20. You should therefore compare the range by room, screen, output target, and integration support rather than inventing a specification hierarchy from model numbers alone.

Decision factor MX-20 Mk2 MX-30i MX-40i

Best selection method Match to room size, seating distance, and output target Obtain current sizing and power guidance from an authorized dealer Obtain current sizing and power guidance from an authorized dealer

Do not assume that MX-30i or MX-40i is automatically appropriate simply because the room is larger. Ask for the current specification sheet, recommended screen range, module dimensions, sensitivity, impedance, amplifier range, and subwoofer requirements for the exact production version being quoted.

What does installation involve?

Installation is a construction and calibration project, not merely speaker placement. The following sequence keeps the decisions that affect one another together.

  1. Survey the room: Record internal dimensions, seating rows, sightlines, HVAC noise, electrical capacity, projector location, and access for 31 kg LCR and 45 kg subwoofer modules.
  2. Freeze the screen concept: Select the screen aspect ratio, diagonal, frame style, masking, and acoustic material before framing the wall.
  3. Engineer the false wall: Build a rigid, serviceable structure that supports the modules and screen. Include cable paths, ventilation, access panels, and clearance for acoustic treatment.
  4. Install absorbent material: Follow the integration design for the area behind and around the speaker faces. The manual specifically identifies absorbent material at the speaker front as a way to reduce reflections behind the screen.
  5. Mount and wire the modules: Secure each LCR and subwoofer module, label every channel, maintain polarity, and leave service loops. Have two people or lifting equipment available for the heavy subwoofer modules.
  6. Install the screen: Keep the screen fabric clear of the speaker faces and verify that the frame does not buzz or rattle at high output.
  7. Configure processing: Enter distances, crossover points, levels, polarity, and limiter settings. The final crossover should be chosen from measured in-room response and the integrator’s design, not from a generic internet preset.
  8. Calibrate every seat: Measure multiple positions, align the LCR stage, integrate the subwoofers, and check high-level transients at the intended reference level.

How should the system be calibrated?

Calibration should begin with geometry and end with level matching. First verify that the three screen channels are aimed consistently and that the center channel is not acoustically shaded by the screen frame. Then set delays from the primary seat, match channel levels with a calibrated microphone, and integrate the subwoofer modules through the processor.

Checks that matter most

  • Confirm that left, center, and right channels have matching tonal balance through the screen material.
  • Measure for a smooth crossover region rather than maximizing one-seat bass.
  • Check polarity and time alignment separately for each subwoofer module.
  • Listen for wall, screen-frame, and grille rattles at high output.
  • Verify that amplifier limiters engage before drivers are overdriven.
  • Recheck levels after the room receives its final seats, carpet, curtains, and acoustic panels.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of Krix MX?

Strengths

  • Cinema-oriented architecture: Behind-screen LCR placement keeps dialogue and effects aligned with the picture.
  • High sensitivity: The MX-20’s 97 dB rating and Krix’s design examples support high playback levels without the amplifier demand typical of lower-sensitivity hi-fi speakers.
  • Controlled directivity: The horn and waveguide are intended to direct energy toward the audience and limit unwanted wall interaction.
  • Modular bass: Separate passive subwoofer modules allow the low-frequency system to be amplified and processed independently.
  • Integrated support: Krix Distribution describes system-design guidance, integration assistance, local technical support, and integrator training.

Weaknesses and risks

  • Construction commitment: A false wall and acoustically transparent screen are central requirements.
  • Space and handling: The modules are large and heavy, especially the 45 kg subwoofers.
  • System cost is not transparent: Current retail pricing, regional availability, and a verified online listing are not established in the supplied material.
  • Limited independent data: No independent listening measurements, distortion graphs, or laboratory comparisons were supplied for the current range.
  • Model-selection uncertainty: Complete comparable figures for MX-30i and MX-40i are not stated, so a current dealer specification is essential.

Where can you buy or install Krix MX speakers?

The strongest supported route is a Krix dealer or trained home-cinema integrator. Krix directs buyers to find a dealer, and Krix Distribution describes design and integration support. That route is preferable because the dealer can confirm the current model, screen-size suitability, wall dimensions, amplifier package, regional warranty, delivery logistics, and calibration scope.

Questions to put in a quotation

  • Which exact model and revision is being quoted: MX-20 Mk2, MX-30i, or MX-40i?
  • What screen size and aspect ratio does the design assume?
  • What are the finished false-wall dimensions and service-access requirements?
  • Which amplifiers and processors meet the LCR and subwoofer recommendations?
  • Does the quote include structural work, acoustic treatment, screen installation, wiring, commissioning, and multi-seat calibration?
  • What are the delivery, warranty, replacement-driver, and local-service terms in your region?

Because no current authoritative retail price or verified marketplace listing is established here, treat any online price as provisional until the seller confirms stock, region, model revision, and warranty.

Is the Krix MX-20 worth it?

The MX-20 is worth considering when the priority is a hidden, high-output cinema front stage and you are already planning a dedicated room. Its published sensitivity, 8-ohm load, broad LCR amplifier recommendation, and separate subwoofer modules give an integrator a flexible platform for reference-level dynamics. The system’s value comes from the complete room solution—speaker, wall, screen, amplification, processing, and calibration—not from the individual boxes in isolation.

It is not the sensible choice for a casual upgrade, a room that cannot accept permanent construction, or a buyer who needs a simple published price and plug-and-play setup. In those cases, a conventional active soundbar, tower-speaker system, or compact in-wall package may solve the practical problem better, even if it cannot match the MX architecture’s cinema presentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you verify before signing a purchase order?

  • Current specification sheets for the exact model and revision.
  • Minimum and recommended screen sizes for your seating distance.
  • Finished module dimensions, wall depth, and structural loading.
  • Amplifier power, channel count, cooling, protection, and limiter settings.
  • Subwoofer quantity, placement, and DSP routing.
  • Screen fabric compatibility and frame clearances.
  • Room-treatment plan and final calibration procedure.
  • Regional price, taxes, delivery, warranty, and service coverage.
  • A written statement identifying what is included in installation and commissioning.

Final assessment

Krix Series MX is a specialist home-cinema platform whose strongest case is a properly engineered dedicated theater. The MX-20 Mk2’s 97 dB sensitivity, 40 Hz–20 kHz LCR range, 25–200 Hz subwoofer range, and substantial amplifier recommendations point to a system built for dynamic impact rather than minimal equipment count. The trade-off is equally clear: you must provide the false wall, acoustically transparent screen, heavy-duty amplification, careful bass management, and professional calibration that the design expects.

Choose MX after the room and screen plan are fixed, not before. For the MX-30i and MX-40i, require current model-specific specifications from a dealer because the supplied official material does not establish directly comparable numbers. With that verification and a competent integrator, the MX-20 Mk2 is a credible foundation for a serious behind-screen home theater; without them, its performance and cost are difficult to predict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Krix MX speakers with a regular television?

The Series MX design assumes that the LCR modules sit behind an acoustically transparent projection screen. A regular television would force the speakers outside the image and would require a different installation approach, so confirm compatibility with an integrator before adapting the system.

Can I mix MX-20 Mk2, MX-30i, and MX-40i channels in one theater?

The supplied material does not publish a mixing or timbre-matching recommendation for combining those models. Ask the dealer for written guidance on tonal matching, crossover settings, and calibration when a system uses more than one Series MX model.
