The Calm As is a boxed, all-foam mattress built around a reversible firmness layer. One face is intended to feel medium-firm; turning the layer over gives a firmer surface. How firm is the Koala Calm As?
Tom’s Guide’s hands-on assessment put the firm side at approximately 7/10 and the medium-firm side at approximately 6.5/10. These are reviewer estimates, not an official Koala scale; Koala does not publish a numerical firmness score for this model. The 1 cm plush cover softens the first impression of both surfaces.

Firmness is highly dependent on body weight, sleeping position, room temperature, and the support underneath the mattress. A heavier sleeper will compress the same foam farther than a lighter sleeper, while a side sleeper may experience the firm face as less forgiving at the shoulder and hip. Treat the two ratings as a relative guide for choosing between the faces, not as a guarantee of a particular feel.
Can couples choose different firmnesses?
No. The Calm As changes firmness by flipping a shared layer, so both sleepers use the same orientation. Couples who need separate settings would need a split or dual-comfort construction instead.

What is the Calm As made of?
Tom’s Guide describes an all-foam build with a flippable layer, a 1 cm plush cover, and a polyester anti-slip base printed with PVC dots. The review reported GECA and CertiPUR-US certifications on the foam at the time of testing. Certifications describe material or emissions criteria at the time they are issued; they do not predict how comfortable the mattress will be for a particular sleeper.
CHOICE identifies the Queen as a 19-layer foam mattress-in-a-box. The layer count is a construction specification, not a direct measure of durability or comfort, because a “layer” can be a thin transition sheet, cover component, or structural foam section.
How is it delivered and set up?
The mattress arrives in two boxes: one for the main base and one for the rolled, reversible layer. The main box is heavy to move, so plan the route to the bedroom before opening it and use two adults where possible.
- Place the boxed base in the room where it will be used, beside a compatible bed base.
- Unwrap and position the main mattress base on the support surface.
- Open the second box and unroll the flippable layer on top of the base.
- Choose the medium-firm or firm orientation, then fit the cover as directed by the seller’s current instructions.
- Allow the foam to settle and ventilate before sleeping on it if it has a noticeable new-foam odor.
Because the Calm As is discontinued, confirm that a marketplace unit includes every layer and the original cover. A listing that contains only the base is not equivalent to the adjustable model.

Does the Koala Calm As sleep cool?
Tom’s Guide reported good cooling performance after extended use. That is a favorable result for an all-foam mattress, but it is not a laboratory temperature rating. Bedroom temperature, bedding, body size, and the foundation can overwhelm differences between foam models.
The Calm As has no spring coil layer, so airflow through the core is more limited than in many hybrids. If you routinely sleep hot, use breathable sheets, keep the room cool, and avoid placing the mattress on a solid surface that blocks ventilation. Those steps cannot turn it into a coil mattress, but they can reduce heat buildup around the sleeper.
How well does it handle movement and edges?
Tom’s Guide found minimal motion transfer, which is useful for partners who move at different times. The reviewer also described edge support as decent. In practical terms, you should be able to sit or lie near the perimeter without an immediate collapse, although an all-foam edge will not feel identical to a reinforced coil perimeter.
Motion isolation and edge stability can pull in opposite directions: softer, more isolating foam may feel less rigid at the edge. Your result also depends on whether the base is flat and adequately supported. A sagging or flexible foundation can make a sound mattress feel unstable.

Tom’s Guide reported comfort across several sleeper types, while emphasizing that mattress feel is personal. The reversible design gives you one adjustment after delivery, which can be valuable when your first choice is too firm or too yielding.
Side sleepers
The medium-firm face is the logical starting point if you need more cushioning at the shoulder and hip. If those areas still feel compressed or numb, the firmer face is unlikely to solve the pressure problem; use the trial period rather than forcing an unsuitable orientation.
Back sleepers
Many back sleepers prefer the firmer face’s greater resistance, particularly if their hips sink too far on softer foam. Your spine should remain in a neutral line, with no persistent hammock-like dip.

Stomach sleepers
Stomach sleepers generally need enough support to keep the pelvis from sinking. The firm orientation is the more plausible starting point, but body weight and torso shape matter more than a single firmness label.
Combination sleepers
Combination sleepers may appreciate the option to change the whole bed’s feel, but flipping is not an on-the-fly adjustment. Test one orientation for several nights before deciding that the mattress is unsuitable.
What are the Calm As Queen specifications and historical price?
CHOICE lists the following Queen-size values. Its page does not expose a publication year for these figures, so the price should be read as a historical review-page value, not a current quote.

Do not use the old $1,700 figure as a benchmark for a discontinued listing without checking freight, taxes, marketplace premiums, and the seller’s return policy. A low advertised price can be poor value if the mattress is opened, incomplete, or ineligible for a return.
What base does the Calm As need?
Koala’s official FAQ recommends a supported, ventilated base and says slats should be no more than 7.5 cm apart. Measure the gaps across the entire sleeping surface, including the center support, rather than checking only the visible outer slats.

If you are buying a remaining unit, obtain the current base guidance in writing and keep it with your receipt in case a warranty question arises.
How does the 120-night trial work?
Koala’s official FAQ describes a risk-free 120-night home trial with a full refund if the mattress is unsuitable. The trial is valuable because firmness cannot be judged reliably in a showroom or by a short sit test.

For a discontinued product, confirm that the trial applies to the exact seller and model before opening the package. Save the order confirmation, delivery date, policy version, and all correspondence. Ask who arranges collection, whether the mattress must be in a particular condition, and when the refund is issued; a third-party seller may not offer Koala’s standard process.
What if you miss the trial window?
Once the stated return period has expired, comfort dissatisfaction is usually much harder to resolve. ProductReview.com.au includes an individual account describing back, neck, and numbness complaints after the return window had passed. That report is not controlled evidence, but it illustrates why you should record the delivery date and make a return decision before the deadline.
What does the Koala warranty cover?
Koala’s official warranty document says coverage starts on the date you receive the mattress and continues for 10 years. It is personal to the original purchaser, cannot be transferred, and applies while that purchaser is resident in Australia.
The warranty is for qualifying manufacturing or material defects. The document excludes normal wear and tear, normal softening, and products bought from someone other than Koala. A marketplace buyer should therefore verify whether the sale includes an original Koala invoice and whether the warranty can legally be used by that purchaser; do not assume that a remaining warranty period follows the mattress to a new owner.
Warranty coverage is separate from the trial. A mattress can be free of a manufacturing defect yet still feel wrong for your body, in which case the trial policy—not the defect warranty—is the relevant remedy.
What do owner reviews say, and how much weight should you give them?
Visible ProductReview.com.au comments include praise for comfort, reduced partner disturbance, and the ability to switch between firm and medium-firm surfaces. The same page includes a negative account involving back, neck, and numbness complaints. These are individual experiences, not controlled tests or a representative failure rate.

Is a discontinued Koala Calm As worth buying?
It can be worthwhile when you specifically want an all-foam mattress with two firmness orientations and you can verify a legitimate 120-night return arrangement. It is a poor gamble when the unit is opened, the seller cannot provide a dated invoice, or the return and warranty terms are vague.
Buy only after these checks
- Confirm the listing is the complete Calm As, including the reversible layer, cover, and base components.
- Ask whether the mattress is new, sealed, or previously slept on.
- Get the seller’s return period and refund process in writing before unboxing.
- Check that the seller is authorized or can provide an original Koala purchase record.
- Measure your bed base and verify slat spacing of 7.5 cm or less.
- Calculate delivered cost, including freight and any marketplace surcharge.
Choose a different mattress when
- You need each partner to select a separate firmness.

What is the final verdict on the Koala Calm As?
The Calm As remains an appealing design for sleepers who want to try two nearby firmness levels without replacing the mattress. Its reported strengths are low partner disturbance, reasonable edge stability, cooling that compares favorably with many all-foam beds, and comfort across several sleeping styles. Its main liabilities today are discontinuation and the resulting uncertainty around stock condition, returns, and warranty eligibility.
Buy only when the complete mattress is available from a traceable seller with written trial terms and a valid purchase record. If those protections are missing, a currently sold mattress with clearly published returns and warranty conditions is the safer purchase, even if its specifications look less attractive on paper.
