As of October 30, 2026, the New York Knicks have the better playoff path. New York is 2–3 with a +0.2 points-per-game differential, while Chicago is 1–4 with a −16.2 differential after five games each, according to the CBS Sports standings. The Knicks also won the teams’ October 28 meeting, 133–127, and are the reigning champions. Those are meaningful early advantages, not a projection of the final Eastern Conference order. A top-six finish earns a direct playoff berth; teams finishing seventh through 10th must navigate the play-in tournament. Chicago is currently displayed 12th, but five games are far too few to call the Bulls eliminated or to assign defensible numerical playoff odds.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Record and scoring snapshot | Current path implication | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New York Knicks | Better early route to a direct berth | 2–3; +0.2 points per game | More favorable starting position, with a possible top-six path | Oct 2026 |
| Chicago Bulls | Comeback case over a long season | 1–4; −16.2 points per game | Currently displayed 12th; must climb toward the top 10 to reach the play-in | Oct 2026 |
The table reflects an early-season snapshot before New York’s listed October 30 game. Standings, records and scoring differentials can change immediately after another result.
Which team has the better playoff path right now?
New York has the clearer route because it leads Chicago in every currently available comparison that matters: record, scoring differential, the completed head-to-head game and recent championship pedigree. The Knicks’ 2–3 record is only one win better than the Bulls’ 1–4 mark, but the scoring gap is much larger. A +0.2 average margin suggests a roughly even team over this five-game sample; Chicago’s −16.2 indicates substantially worse results so far.

What does a playoff path mean in the Eastern Conference?
The route depends on where a team finishes in the conference. The NBA’s format gives the top six teams direct playoff places. Teams placed seventh through 10th enter the play-in tournament, where two more playoff seeds are awarded.
The league describes the arrangement as follows: “The SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament features the Nos. 7-10 teams in each conference battling for the 7th and 8th playoff seeds.” The current format is explained in the NBA’s play-in guide.
Finishing first through sixth
A team in the top six after the regular season goes directly into the playoff bracket. It avoids the additional elimination games and receives a conventional first-round seed based on its final conference position.
Finishing seventh or eighth
The seventh-place team hosts the eighth-place team. The winner takes the seventh playoff seed. The loser gets another chance: it plays the winner of the ninth-versus-10th game for the eighth seed.
Finishing ninth or 10th
The ninth-place team hosts the 10th-place team. The loser is eliminated, while the winner advances to face the loser of the seventh-versus-eighth game for the eighth seed. Therefore, “making the play-in” is not the same as securing a playoff berth.
For this comparison, a direct top-six finish is the better path. A team can still reach the playoffs from seventh through 10th, but it must win under pressure and has less margin for error.
How do the Knicks and Bulls compare after five games?
Both teams had played five games in the standings snapshot available on October 30. That makes the comparison fair as a description of what has happened, but not as a reliable forecast of April.

The records and differentials are observed five-game averages reported by CBS Sports. They are not adjusted ratings, strength-of-schedule estimates or projected full-season margins. The 133–127 result comes from the NBA Official record.
Can the Bulls still make the play-in?
Yes. Chicago can still make the play-in because 77 regular-season games remained after the five-game snapshot. Being displayed 12th in late October means the Bulls were outside the top 10 at that moment; it does not mean they were eliminated.
To reach the play-in, Chicago must finish the regular season seventh, eighth, ninth or 10th in the Eastern Conference. A top-six finish would be even better because it would provide a direct playoff place. The practical challenge is that the Bulls must reverse both their record deficit and their large negative scoring differential while the teams above them continue collecting wins.
What would count as evidence of a Bulls recovery?
- A sustained improvement in winning percentage over more than a few games.
- A scoring differential that moves toward zero instead of remaining near the current −16.2.
- Climbing from the displayed 12th position into the 10-team play-in range.
- Results against Eastern Conference rivals, which directly affect the standings race.
- Enough consistency late in the season to avoid relying on a single play-in game.
None of those conditions is established by the October record alone. The Bulls’ route is difficult from the current position, but it remains open.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo the Knicks have a direct playoff path?
Yes. New York can earn a direct playoff berth by finishing in the Eastern Conference’s top six. The current 2–3 record does not place the Knicks safely in that group, and the available snapshot does not state their exact conference rank, but their near-even scoring differential gives them a better starting profile than Chicago’s −16.2.
A direct path is preferable because it removes the play-in’s extra elimination risk. New York still has to turn the early baseline into a winning record and hold that position through the end of the regular season. If the Knicks finish seventh through 10th instead, they would face the same play-in structure as any other team in that range.
Does Knicks vs. Bulls affect the tiebreaker?
The Knicks’ 133–127 win on October 28 gives New York the first head-to-head result this season. In a two-team regular-season tie, head-to-head winning percentage comes first under the NBA’s published standings framework. However, New York has not already secured the season-series tiebreaker: the teams’ next displayed meeting is November 4, and later results can change the head-to-head record.

Head-to-head matters only if the teams finish tied in the relevant standings position and the applicable tiebreak procedure reaches that comparison. It does not give the Knicks extra standings wins now, nor does one October result determine either team’s playoff qualification.

How much should the Knicks’ 2026 championship matter?
It matters as context, not as a guarantee. New York won the 2026 Finals 4–1 over San Antonio, according to NBA.com’s Finals coverage. That establishes a proven recent ceiling: the Knicks have demonstrated that their organization and roster can complete a championship run.
A title from the previous season cannot substitute for this season’s results. Rosters, health, schedules, opponents and form can change. The championship is therefore a reason to give New York more confidence than a typical 2–3 team, but it is not evidence that the Knicks will automatically repeat, finish in the top six or beat Chicago in every future meeting.
What could change the ranking before April?
The Knicks lead now because all four available signals point in the same direction. That lead can narrow or disappear as the sample grows. The most important changes to watch are sustained performance rather than one isolated result.

The record becomes more informative
At five games, one win changes a team’s record substantially. After several dozen games, a single result has less influence on the overall standings. If New York remains around .500 while Chicago strings together wins, the early advantage will shrink quickly.
The scoring differential stabilizes or reverses
Points-per-game differential can reveal whether a record is supported by the way games are being played, but the current figures are still volatile. If Chicago’s margin improves sharply toward zero and New York’s slips below zero, the present gap will no longer describe the teams accurately.

The standings race compresses
Early conference positions can be separated by only a few games. A team outside the top 10 can move into play-in range with a short winning streak, while a team currently near a direct berth can fall into the play-in group after a poor stretch.
The next head-to-head meeting adds evidence
The November 4 meeting is the next displayed Knicks-Bulls matchup. Its result will update the season series and provide another direct comparison, but it still will not decide the full-season race by itself.

The final standings, not the October snapshot, determine whether a team receives a direct berth or enters the play-in. A comparison written early in the season should therefore be treated as a dated assessment and refreshed after meaningful changes.
When are the decisive 2026–27 dates?
The NBA’s key-dates calendar lists April 11, 2027 as the end of the regular season and April 13–16 as the play-in window. Those dates define when the direct top-six places and play-in positions become final. The calendar’s following April 17 entry is labeled “NBA Playoffs 2026” even though it appears within the 2026–27 schedule; that label is an apparent year error, so it should not be repeated as the 2027 season name.
Use the NBA key-dates page for the current schedule, and verify it again as the season approaches because league calendars can be updated.
How should you monitor the Knicks-Bulls playoff path?
A useful comparison should be refreshed rather than treated as a permanent prediction. Follow this sequence after each meaningful standings change:
Recommended Free Tools
- Update both records. Confirm the latest wins, losses and games played in a current standings table.
- Record each scoring differential. Keep the source’s definition and date attached; do not convert a raw average into an adjusted rating or playoff probability.
- Check conference position. Identify whether each team is in the top six, seventh through 10th, or outside the play-in field.
- Review direct meetings. Track the Knicks-Bulls season series and note whether a two-team tie could make head-to-head winning percentage relevant.
- Separate qualification from seeding. A team may be improving its chance to reach the postseason without improving its chance of a direct berth.
- Reassess only after the sample grows. Look for a sustained trend across multiple weeks instead of overreacting to one game.
- Refresh before publication or sharing. The October 30 snapshot is time-sensitive, and the November 4 game should be checked when its status and result are available.
How was the call made?
The ranking uses the factors that most directly answer “Which team has the better playoff path?” rather than trying to manufacture a probability from five games:

- Head-to-head evidence: New York won the October 28 meeting, 133–127, but the season series is not complete.
- Recent ceiling: New York is the 2026 champion, which supplies context but not a current-season guarantee.
- Evidence quality: Every current number comes from a named league or standings source and is qualified as an early five-game snapshot.
On that framework, New York is the clear leader today. The conclusion should be revisited as the record, margin and conference position become more representative.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Knicks favored to make the playoffs based on this snapshot?
The snapshot supports a better position for New York, but it does not establish a reliable numerical playoff percentage. Five games are insufficient for a defensible odds model, especially without schedule-strength, roster or availability adjustments.
Is points-per-game differential the same as net rating?
No. The cited +0.2 and −16.2 figures are observed scoring averages from the standings table. They are not possession-adjusted net ratings, opponent-adjusted projections or forecasts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What happens if Chicago finishes 10th?
A 10th-place finish would put Chicago in the play-in, where it must first play the ninth-place team. Losing that game eliminates the team; winning it creates another game against the loser of the seventh-versus-eighth matchup for the eighth seed.
When should this comparison be updated?
Refresh it after new games materially change either record, differential or conference position, and specifically after the displayed November 4 Knicks-Bulls meeting. The standings should also be checked immediately before using the article for a current-season decision.
Does the October 28 win give New York home-court advantage in the playoffs?
No. That result affects the regular-season head-to-head record only. Home-court positioning depends on final conference seeding, which will not be known until the regular season ends.
