Keysight Oscilloscope Software vs Rohde & Schwarz Oscilloscope Software is not a simple brand-vs-brand contest: Keysight is strongest for portfolio breadth, application-specific compliance, and BenchVue automation, while R&S is especially compelling for integrated MXO/RTO/RTP workflows and ScopeStudio offline analysis. The best choice depends on the exact scope model, protocol, license, and workflow.

The original comparison is technically uneven because “Keysight oscilloscopes” describes a broad hardware portfolio while “Rohde & Schwarz oscilloscope software” describes an ecosystem of instrument firmware, application options, remote-control tools, and offline software. A fair decision compares a specific Keysight InfiniiVision or Infiniium configuration with a specific R&S MXO, RTO6, RTP, RTE, or other supported configuration.

For a professional lab, the decisive question is not which logo offers the most features. The decisive question is which system can acquire, decode, analyze, automate, document, and report the required measurements with the fewest missing options and licensing obstacles.

Key takeaways

  • Keysight says its oscilloscope software portfolio includes more than 50 compliance packages, alongside protocol, signal-integrity, jitter, power-integrity, and RF analysis tools.
  • R&S ScopeStudio is a distinct PC-based product for viewing, analyzing, documenting, and archiving saved oscilloscope waveforms; the official pages reviewed listed starting prices of USD 650 in the US and €550 on an international page in August 2026.
  • PathWave BenchVue provides Keysight remote control, logging, export, and drag-and-drop Test Flow automation, but supported controls and properties vary by oscilloscope model.
  • Protocol decoding is not the same as compliance testing: a compliance package may also automate limits, acquisition, calibration, fixtures, measurements, and reports.
  • R&S publishes minimum bandwidth requirements for several software options, including 6 GHz for its PCI Express package and 4 GHz for its MIPI high-speed package on the referenced product page.
  • Total cost includes bandwidth and memory upgrades, digital channels, probes, fixtures, software options, offline analysis, license renewals, calibration, and service—not just the scope’s starting price.

What exactly is being compared in Keysight Oscilloscope Software vs Rohde & Schwarz Oscilloscope Software?

Keysight Oscilloscope Software vs Rohde & Schwarz Oscilloscope Software is best understood as a four-layer ecosystem comparison. The four layers are built-in instrument firmware and user interface, application options installed on the oscilloscope, PC control and automation, and offline waveform analysis and documentation.

Keysight’s oscilloscope software portfolio page spans InfiniiVision application software, Infiniium analysis, PathWave BenchVue, protocol packages, compliance tools, and high-speed and power applications. R&S’s oscilloscope software catalog similarly groups application options with the MXO, RTO6, RTP, RTE, and related families.

Which ecosystem has the broader application coverage?

Keysight has the broader published portfolio signal, but that fact is not by itself proof that Keysight is better for a particular standard. Keysight says its oscilloscope portfolio includes more than 50 compliance-test packages, covering standards such as USB, DDR, MIPI, PCIe, HDMI, CAN, LIN, FlexRay, Ethernet, MIL-STD, ARINC 429, NFC, SATA, SAS, XAUI, and Thunderbolt.

Keysight’s portfolio also covers I2C, SPI, RS-232, I2S, JTAG, MIPI RFFE, I3C, SPMI, PCIe, SATA/SAS, USB, DisplayPort, CAN, CAN FD, CAN XL, LIN, FlexRay, SENT, MIL-STD-1553, and ARINC 429. The relevant option may differ between an InfiniiVision and an Infiniium scope, and a listed protocol does not guarantee identical trigger, decode, measurement, or compliance capability across models.

R&S lists protocol and analysis options for ARINC 429, MIL-1553, SpaceWire, Automotive Ethernet, CAN, CAN-FD, CAN-XL, LIN, FlexRay, SENT, CXPI, 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T Ethernet, I2C, SPI, RS-232/RS-422/RS-485, UART, I2S, MIPI, and PCI Express. R&S also presents software for compliance testing, embedding, equalization, power analysis, and vector-signal analysis.

The vendors do not necessarily count or group packages in the same way. A catalog count is useful for showing portfolio breadth, but a buyer should compare the exact standard, test revision, report format, supported hardware, fixtures, calibration procedure, and license model.

What is the difference between live instrument software and offline analysis?

Live instrument software operates the oscilloscope during acquisition; offline analysis operates on captured waveform data after acquisition. The distinction matters for distributed validation teams, teaching laboratories, support engineers, and report-heavy workflows.

R&S ScopeStudio

R&S ScopeStudio is explicitly positioned as PC software for viewing oscilloscope waveforms away from the instrument, analyzing measurement data, documenting results, and archiving measurements. R&S says ScopeStudio uses visualization tools inherited from the MXO oscilloscope family and offers node-locked and network-based licensing. The R&S ScopeStudio product page should be checked for the current supported instruments and capabilities before purchase.

The US R&S software catalog listed ScopeStudio from USD 650, while the international product page listed a starting price of €550. Those are regional catalog signals observed in August 2026, not a universal street price or a complete system quote. Taxes, currency, support, license type, and regional commercial terms can change the amount.

Keysight’s offline workflow

Keysight offers PC control, measurement logging, export, and application-specific Infiniium analysis, but the public portfolio page does not establish one universal ScopeStudio-equivalent workflow for every Keysight oscilloscope family. BenchVue should therefore be evaluated primarily for remote control, logging, export, and automation, while Infiniium analysis tools should be checked individually for offline use.

Before assuming that a saved Keysight waveform can be analyzed away from the scope, verify whether the proposed software can reopen the file, reproduce the required measurements and math, preserve metadata, generate the required report, and work without the original instrument connected.

Need Keysight starting point R&S starting point
Operate a scope remotely PathWave BenchVue, subject to model support Python and family-specific remote-control workflows
Log measurements over time BenchVue Verify the selected R&S control or analysis workflow
Analyze saved waveforms on a PC Verify the exact InfiniiVision or Infiniium tool and file support ScopeStudio
Prepare documentation and archive data BenchVue export and applicable Infiniium tools ScopeStudio’s documented viewing, analysis, documentation, and archiving workflow
Automate a sequence without writing every step manually BenchVue Test Flow Verify whether the chosen family offers an equivalent graphical workflow; Python is the clearly promoted automation path

How do Keysight BenchVue and R&S automation compare?

Keysight BenchVue is the more explicitly packaged GUI automation option in the supplied evidence, while R&S emphasizes Python remote control, PC-based analysis, and instrument synchronization through ScopeSync for compatible MXO instruments.

Keysight positions PathWave BenchVue Oscilloscope software for remote control, screen-image capture, measurement-data logging, export to MATLAB, Microsoft Excel, and Word, simultaneous visualization of multiple instrument measurements, automated test-sequence creation, and cloud-connected instrument control. BenchVue Test Flow uses a drag-and-drop approach for automated tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BenchVue is not a universal identical-control layer for every Keysight scope. Keysight’s documentation states that available controls and Test Flow properties vary by instrument type and model. A current BenchVue Oscilloscope application help page should be used to check the exact model before treating a feature as available.

R&S promotes Python remote control on its oscilloscope software page. That can suit engineering teams that already maintain Python test infrastructure, but the exact commands, drivers, APIs, waveform formats, and supported functions still need verification for the selected instrument family. R&S ScopeSync can synchronize compatible MXO instruments; ScopeSync should not be assumed to synchronize every R&S oscilloscope generation.

What are the BenchVue license choices?

Keysight documentation identifies fixed node-locked, transportable, USB portable, and network floating license models. BenchVue is available through perpetual and time-limited subscription licensing. A perpetual license does not expire, but the initial entitlement includes one year of updates and support; continued support may require renewal. A subscription expires at the end of its term and includes support during that term.

Network floating access also requires enough licenses for simultaneous users. One network license is not automatically permission for unlimited concurrent engineers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keysight documents a free 30-day trial and a Demo Mode that can operate without a connected instrument. The documented evaluation path is:

  1. Install or open the PathWave BenchVue Oscilloscope application.
  2. Open the information and technical-support menu.
  3. Select License Management.
  4. Select Get Trial or Buy License.
  5. Request the trial license or purchase the required entitlement.
  6. For an offline demonstration, open the instrument selector and enable Demo Mode.

The trial and Demo Mode are useful for evaluating the interface, but they do not prove that every required control or Test Flow property will work with the lab’s particular scope.

Which vendor is better for protocol decoding and compliance testing?

Neither vendor is categorically better for protocol decoding and compliance testing; the correct choice depends on the exact standard, revision, physical layer, scope family, bandwidth, fixtures, and report requirements.

Requirement Keysight evidence R&S evidence Buying question
Low-speed embedded buses I2C, SPI, RS-232, I2S, UART-related coverage, and other application packages I2C, SPI, UART, I2S, and RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 coverage Does the option only decode, or can it trigger on protocol events and measure timing limits?
Automotive buses CAN, CAN FD, CAN XL, LIN, FlexRay, SENT CAN, CAN-FD, CAN-XL, LIN, FlexRay, SENT, and CXPI Are the required bus generations, trigger modes, and physical-layer measurements supported?
Automotive and aerospace serial links MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC 429 packages are listed ARINC 429, MIL-1553, and SpaceWire packages are listed Does the package support the required compliance or characterization report?
High-speed interconnects PCIe, SATA/SAS, USB, DisplayPort, MIPI, and related packages are listed PCI Express, MIPI, 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T Ethernet, and related packages are listed What bandwidth, fixture, probe, equalization, and test-revision requirements apply?
Formal compliance Keysight says its portfolio includes more than 50 compliance packages R&S lists compliance and characterization options but does not provide a directly comparable package count in the supplied evidence Does the software automate setup, limits, calibration, measurements, and final reporting?

A decoder identifies protocol fields or packets. A compliance suite may additionally configure acquisition, apply standard-specific limits, control fixtures, perform calibration steps, evaluate pass/fail results, and generate standards-specific documentation. Those are different buying categories even when both products use the word “protocol.”

Why do bandwidth requirements matter?

Software support is conditional on hardware capability. On the referenced R&S product page, the low-speed serial-bus package lists a minimum bandwidth of 600 MHz, automotive and aerospace packages list a minimum of 100 MHz, the PCI Express package lists a minimum of 6 GHz, and the MIPI high-speed package lists a minimum of 4 GHz. These requirements are tied to the specific R&S options and page information; they are not universal thresholds for every vendor or test.

Keysight options likewise need to be matched to the exact InfiniiVision or Infiniium family, bandwidth, firmware, and hardware configuration. Never infer compatibility merely because a protocol name appears on a vendor portfolio page.

How do Keysight and R&S compare for high-speed signal integrity?

Both vendors offer serious high-speed analysis, but similarly named functions do not guarantee identical algorithms or workflows.

Keysight lists Infiniium tools for equalization, InfiniiSim, crosstalk, jitter, vertical noise, phase noise, PAM-N analysis, de-embedding, and signal-integrity event identification. Those functions are relevant to high-speed digital characterization, but the exact supported standards and analysis depth depend on the Infiniium family and licensed options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

R&S lists embedding, equalization, TX-FFE, CTLE, FFE, DFE, vector-signal analysis, I/Q processing, clock-data-recovery-related functionality, and wideband modulated load-pull analysis. Some R&S options specify minimum bandwidth or family requirements.

High-speed criterion What to compare
Jitter Random and deterministic-jitter separation, statistical depth, CDR algorithms, trend plots, masks, and compliance-report support
Eye analysis Supported data rates, eye-diagram construction, mask testing, BER workflow, and clock-recovery method
Equalization TX-FFE, CTLE, FFE, DFE, tap controls, adaptation, supported standards, and whether processing is live or offline
De-embedding File formats, fixture and probe models, causality/passivity handling, calibration workflow, and cascade capability
PAM analysis Supported PAM levels, measurements, compliance standards, and required bandwidth and sampling rate
Automation Report generation, batch processing, APIs, scripting, and repeatability of the test sequence

For a high-speed validation purchase, request a demonstration using the team’s actual channel files, fixtures, standard revision, data rate, and report template. “Jitter analysis” or “equalization” in a catalog is not enough to establish equivalence.

Which platform is better for power-integrity and power-electronics work?

Keysight lists power-integrity and power-supply analysis, including analysis of interactions between AC or digital signals and DC supplies. R&S lists general power analysis and a three-phase power-analysis option. Both ecosystems can therefore support power-related workflows, but the required probes and safe measurement setup remain as important as the software.

Harmonics and power factor Does the option support the required line frequency, harmonics, and report format? Are voltage isolation, current range, and bandwidth adequate?
Three-phase systems Does the chosen package support the required three-phase topology and measurements? Are enough channels, probes, isolation, and synchronization available?

A scope with power-analysis software still requires suitable differential probes, current probes, deskew, fixtures, bandwidth, and safe isolation practices. A software comparison should not be used as a substitute for an electrical safety review.

How do the scope families affect the software comparison?

Scope family and product tier determine which software can run, what bandwidth is available, and how much the complete system costs. Comparing a Keysight InfiniiVision scope with an R&S RTP solely because both are oscilloscopes produces a misleading result.

R&S family Official US catalog starting price observed in August 2026 Catalog bandwidth and channel signal
RTC1000 USD 1,240 50–300 MHz, 2 channels
RTB 2 USD 2,030 70–300 MHz, 2 or 4 channels
Scope Rider USD 5,040 60–500 MHz, 2 or 4 channels
RTM3000 USD 5,190 100 MHz–1 GHz, 2 or 4 channels
MXO 3 USD 5,890 100 MHz–1 GHz, 4 or 8 channels
MXO 4 USD 10,790 200 MHz–1.5 GHz, 4 channels
MXO 5C USD 21,500 100 MHz–2 GHz, 4 or 8 channels
MXO 5 USD 23,620 100 MHz–2 GHz, 4 or 8 channels
RTO6 USD 33,280 600 MHz–6 GHz, 4 channels
RTP Price on request 4–16 GHz

These are official catalog starting signals from the R&S US oscilloscope catalog, not configured purchase prices. Bandwidth upgrades, memory, MSO channels, probes, software, service, calibration, and regional taxes can materially change the final quote. The supplied catalog also identifies RTB2000 as succeeded by RTB 2, RTE1000 by MXO 5, RTO2000 by RTO6, RTM2000 by RTM3000, and HMO3000 by RTM3000. Used-equipment buyers should verify whether the desired license and upgrade path remains available.

Keysight’s software page covers InfiniiVision families such as the 3000 X-Series, 4000 X-Series, and 6000 X-Series, as well as Infiniium UXR, MXR, EXR, S, V, and Z families. Keysight does not provide one comparable universal starting price on the supplied software page because those families have substantially different hardware and licensing structures.

Which ecosystem fits each professional workflow?

Use case Best starting point Why Important qualification
General electronics bench Compare an equivalent Keysight InfiniiVision and R&S MXO or RTB 2 Basic triggering, measurements, digital channels, export, and usability usually matter more than a large application catalog Evaluate the actual touchscreen workflow and included versus optional features
University teaching lab Whichever ecosystem offers the lower complete cost and simpler shared licensing Repeatable setups, documentation, and accessible interfaces may outweigh high-end analysis Check network licensing, student workstation count, training resources, and warranty
Embedded debugging Keysight or R&S according to the required bus packages and existing lab standard CAN, LIN, SENT, I2C, SPI, UART, and trigger/decode behavior are central Compare exact bus generations and physical-layer options, not protocol names alone
Automotive validation Shortlist both vendors against the required CAN, automotive Ethernet, LIN, FlexRay, SENT, or CXPI workflow Standards coverage, compliance depth, fixtures, and reports determine productivity Verify bandwidth and test-revision requirements
Aerospace and defense Compare the exact MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, or SpaceWire options Trigger, decode, characterization, and report capabilities differ by package Confirm security, network, support, and procurement requirements separately
Power electronics Compare power-analysis options with probes and safe measurement accessories as one system Ripple, efficiency, switching loss, harmonics, and three-phase analysis may require different options Do not select on software alone
High-speed serial validation Compare specific Infiniium and R&S high-end families Jitter, CDR, eye, equalization, de-embedding, PAM, and compliance depth are decisive Use the same channel files, fixtures, standard revision, and report requirements in demonstrations

Keysight’s flexible BenchVue licensing can be valuable when a lab needs transportable, USB portable, or network floating access, but every application-specific option should be inventoried. R&S’s ScopeStudio gives buyers a clearly identified offline-analysis product, but ScopeStudio is a poor fit when the requirement is live acquisition, instrument control, or full standards-compliance automation.

What should you verify before ordering?

  1. Exact model: Record the complete instrument model, not merely “Keysight Infiniium” or “R&S MXO.”
  2. Hardware capability: Confirm bandwidth, sampling rate, memory, channel count, digital channels, and any required hardware options.
  3. Software role: Label each requirement as control, acquisition, measurement, decode, compliance, analysis, documentation, or automation.
  4. Compatibility: Check the vendor’s current model-support matrix, firmware requirement, hardware revision, and license entitlement.
  5. Bandwidth minimum: Confirm the minimum bandwidth for every protocol, compliance, jitter, equalization, and power package.
  6. Probe and fixture dependency: Confirm required probes, fixtures, adapters, calibration, deskew, and de-embedding files.
  7. Offline behavior: Test whether saved waveforms can be reopened and whether measurements, math, masks, annotations, and metadata remain available.
  8. Automation: Verify SCPI or Python support, BenchVue controls, Test Flow properties, drivers, APIs, network access, and export formats.
  9. License location: Determine whether the license is tied to the instrument, PC, USB key, user, or network server.
  10. Concurrent use: For floating licenses, calculate how many engineers must use the software simultaneously.
  11. Operating system: Confirm compatibility with the lab’s supported Windows version or other required environment.
  12. Legacy status: For used scopes, verify that the application option, firmware, support, and license transfer or rehost path still exists.

What are the most common buying mistakes?

Comparing incompatible tiers

A low- or mid-range Keysight InfiniiVision scope should not be compared with an R&S RTO6 or RTP solely by brand. Match bandwidth, channel count, memory, update rate, ADC or vertical-resolution needs, analysis options, and intended application first.

Assuming “software included” means “all software included”

Included software may mean basic firmware, standard measurements, a temporary entitlement, or one year of updates and support. Included software does not necessarily include protocol decoding, compliance, jitter, power analysis, de-embedding, equalization, offline analysis, or floating access.

Confusing control with analysis

Remote-control software may capture data without reproducing the complete on-instrument analysis environment. Offline software may analyze saved waveforms without controlling the oscilloscope. Treat those as separate requirements.

Using protocol support as proof of compliance support

A decoder that identifies packets is not automatically a compliance suite. Ask whether the software applies standard-specific limits, controls acquisition, performs calibration, supports fixtures, and creates the required report.

Trusting an old download page as current evidence

Keysight download pages can contain historical release sections. A page showing a 2024 or 2020 application does not prove that the application is the newest release. Use the current product page and supported-instrument list for final compatibility claims. A BenchVue collection page in the dossier shows a 2026 release dated January 31, 2026, but that is a BenchVue collection signal, not proof that every oscilloscope application or instrument firmware has the same version.

What is the final verdict?

Choose Keysight when the lab values a broad application and compliance catalog, already owns Keysight instruments, needs BenchVue logging or Test Flow automation, or depends on an Infiniium high-speed analysis workflow. Keysight’s breadth is an ecosystem advantage, not a guarantee that every option is available on every scope.

Choose R&S when an integrated MXO, RTO6, or RTP workflow is attractive, PC-based waveform analysis and documentation are important, ScopeStudio fits the team’s offline process, or the required application options align better with the selected R&S family. ScopeStudio is particularly relevant when engineers need to examine and document saved waveforms without occupying the acquisition instrument.

For high-speed serial, compliance, and power work, do not make a logo-level decision. Demonstrate both proposed configurations with the actual protocol, standard revision, fixture, probe, waveform, report, and automation sequence. Then compare the total cost of ownership and the number of manual steps left after licensing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does R&S ScopeStudio replace an oscilloscope?

No. R&S ScopeStudio is PC software for viewing, analyzing, documenting, and archiving oscilloscope waveforms; it does not replace the oscilloscope’s acquisition hardware. ScopeStudio should be evaluated as offline analysis software, not as a live acquisition instrument or universal compliance system.

Does Keysight BenchVue support every Keysight oscilloscope?

No. BenchVue controls and Test Flow properties vary by oscilloscope type and model. Buyers should check the current supported-instrument list and test the exact model before purchasing a BenchVue license.

Is protocol decoding the same as oscilloscope compliance testing?

No. Protocol decoding identifies and displays protocol activity, while compliance testing may also automate acquisition, calibration, standard-specific limits, fixtures, measurements, pass/fail evaluation, and reporting.

What is the cheapest R&S oscilloscope listed in the supplied catalog?

The R&S US catalog page reviewed for this comparison listed the RTC1000 from USD 1,240 as a starting price in August 2026. The price is an official catalog starting signal, not a complete configured system quote; options, probes, software, service, and taxes can increase the final cost.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Keysight is the stronger starting point for broad application coverage and BenchVue-centered control and automation. R&S is the stronger starting point when an integrated MXO/RTO/RTP ecosystem or dedicated ScopeStudio offline analysis matters. Neither verdict is universal: compare exact models, bandwidth requirements, software roles, licenses, probes, fixtures, and support costs before ordering.
