Choose KeePassXC if you want an offline-first, open-source vault saved as an encrypted file that you control, with no subscription and complete freedom over synchronization. Choose Bitwarden if you want managed synchronization, official apps for phones and computers, unlimited-device access, sharing, emergency access, and straightforward family or team administration.

Neither is universally safer. KeePassXC minimizes dependence on a hosted account but makes you responsible for backups, synchronization, mobile access, and recovery. Bitwarden removes that file-management burden and adds account-level services, while requiring trust in a hosted service unless you self-host. The right choice follows your devices, the people who need shared access, and how much operational responsibility you want to keep.

What are KeePassXC and Bitwarden?

KeePassXC and Bitwarden solve the same basic problem—storing passwords, passkeys, one-time codes, notes, and related secrets—but use opposite operating models.

KeePassXC is a local encrypted database

KeePassXC is a modern, secure, open-source password manager for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It saves usernames, passwords, URLs, attachments, and notes in an encrypted KDBX database file. The project describes itself as ad-free, tracker-free, and cloud-free: your encrypted database is not stored on the project’s remote servers, and you decide where the file lives.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

You can keep the KDBX file on one computer, copy it to a removable drive, or place it in a private or public cloud-synchronization folder. The application does not manage that synchronization for you. You also choose your backup schedule, additional key files, and recovery process.

Bitwarden is a managed account service

Bitwarden encrypts a vault under a zero-knowledge design and delivers it through official desktop, browser, and mobile clients. The service synchronizes the vault for you and supports unlimited devices and passwords. A permanent free plan is available, while paid plans add sharing, emergency access, authenticator features, attachments, administration, and other controls.

Bitwarden also offers self-hosting options on paid plans. Self-hosting changes who operates the server, but it does not turn Bitwarden into a KDBX-style file that you manually copy between devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do storage, synchronization, and backup differ?

KeePassXC gives you direct control over a database file; Bitwarden gives you an account that is synchronized by a service. That distinction affects every daily task, from adding a login on your phone to recovering after a lost computer.

KeePassXC: you operate the file

When you save a new credential, KeePassXC writes it to the local KDBX file. To use the same vault elsewhere, you must make that file available through your chosen method. A cloud folder can synchronize it between computers, or you can copy it manually. The advantage is independence from a vendor’s hosted storage. The cost is operational work:

  • Keep at least one current backup separate from the working copy.
  • Wait for synchronization to finish before opening the database on another computer.
  • Resolve conflicts if two devices edit different versions at the same time.
  • Protect the database password, any key file, and any hardware token needed to unlock it.
  • Test that backups can actually be opened before you need them.

A lost or corrupted database, forgotten database password, or missing key file can leave you without a practical recovery path. KeePassXC’s local model is therefore strongest for people willing to treat the vault like other important encrypted files.

Bitwarden: the service handles synchronization

Bitwarden stores the encrypted vault in its managed service and distributes it through your authenticated account. Add an item in a browser extension, desktop app, or phone app, and the other signed-in clients can receive the change without you moving a file. This is the lower-friction choice for households, people who switch devices frequently, and anyone who does not want to design a synchronization scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bitwarden still requires account hygiene: use a strong master password, configure two-step login, keep recovery information available, and periodically export an encrypted copy. Managed synchronization reduces file handling; it does not remove the need for a recovery plan.

Which manager works best across computers and phones?

Bitwarden has official clients across the major device categories. KeePassXC has a strong desktop workflow but no official mobile application, so phone access requires a separate compatible KDBX application and your own synchronization arrangement.

Capability KeePassXC Bitwarden
Desktop platforms Windows, macOS, and Linux Official desktop clients
Browser integration Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Chromium, Vivaldi, Brave, and Tor Browser Official browser extensions
Mobile application No official mobile application Official mobile clients
Device policy You choose which compatible apps and copies access the KDBX file Unlimited devices on the free plan and paid plans
Passkeys Supported through browser integration Supported in the account and client ecosystem

Desktop and browser use

KeePassXC’s browser integration can fill credentials and handle passkeys in the listed browsers. Its Auto-Type feature works across desktop operating systems, but the project’s FAQ notes a Linux limitation: Auto-Type relies on X11 and is not available under Wayland. If your Linux desktop runs Wayland, plan on browser integration or manual copy-and-paste instead.

Bitwarden’s extensions are designed around a signed-in account, so a new computer generally requires installing the extension, authenticating, and allowing the vault to synchronize. That setup is simpler when several people use different operating systems.

Phone access

With KeePassXC, the desktop application itself is not a phone app. You must select a compatible mobile KDBX client, place the database where that client can reach it, and protect synchronization between the phone and your primary copy. That can be a reasonable technical project, but it is not the seamless experience many first-time users expect.

Bitwarden’s official mobile clients make phone enrollment part of the normal account workflow. This matters for passkeys, time-based one-time passwords, and logins needed away from your desk. Unlimited-device access also avoids a device-count decision when a household adds tablets or replacement phones.

How do sharing, families, teams, and recovery compare?

Bitwarden is built for account-level sharing and delegated recovery. KeePassXC can share selected database content, but it does not provide a hosted family account, organization administration, or emergency-access service.

KeePassXC sharing with KeeShare

KeeShare lets you share entries between KeePassXC databases. You can maintain a personal database and a separate shared database, then exchange selected records. This preserves file ownership and can work well for technically comfortable collaborators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KeeShare is not a family-management service. There is no vendor-hosted household directory, centralized membership control, or emergency-access workflow that lets a designated person request access to your vault after an incapacity event. You must agree on file locations, permissions, backups, and revocation procedures yourself.

Bitwarden plans for households and organizations

Bitwarden Premium adds sharing with one other user and emergency access. Families provides six premium accounts, unlimited sharing, and unlimited collections. Teams adds centralized ownership, event logs, directory synchronization, and SCIM provisioning. Enterprise adds granular access control, passwordless single sign-on, enterprise policies, self-host flexibility, and a free Families plan for users.

These features change the administrative model. A family can share streaming, utilities, or emergency records without passing around a database file. A company can assign ownership, review events, synchronize directories, and provision accounts through established identity processes.

Is KeePassXC or Bitwarden safer?

Both can be used securely when the master credential, recovery material, devices, and backups are protected. The meaningful difference is where the trust and failure points sit, not a published security score. The available product documentation does not establish an independent comparative benchmark, breach-rate percentage, or performance ranking.

KeePassXC’s encryption controls

KeePassXC databases can use AES-256 or Twofish, configurable key-transformation settings, and an optional key file. A YubiKey or OnlyKey can add challenge-response protection to the database key. The database remains encrypted while stored, and the project states: “Your passwords remain encrypted at all times and no data is stored on remote servers, so you stay in full control of your data.”

That control also means you are the operator. If an attacker obtains the KDBX file, the database password and any required key file become critical defenses. If you lose the only working copy or forget the unlock material, there is no hosted support channel that can reset the vault for you.

Bitwarden’s account protections

Bitwarden documents open-source security, zero-knowledge encryption, advanced two-step login, phishing protection, passkey management, encrypted export, and unlimited devices and passwords. A hosted account introduces an online service dependency, but the vault is designed so the service cannot read your decrypted secrets. Self-hosting can move server operations to your own environment on eligible paid plans.

Use two-step login, a unique master password, and a tested recovery method. Two-step login protects account authentication; it does not replace a strong master password or a usable encrypted export.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a hardware key does in each product

A YubiKey has different security roles in the two workflows. KeePassXC uses challenge-response to strengthen the cryptographic key that unlocks the KDBX database. Bitwarden uses hardware security keys as a two-step-login method for the account. KeePassXC’s challenge-response is not the same thing as a changing time-based second-factor code.

Before buying a key, verify the exact YubiKey model, connector, and operating-system support you need. Keep a second recovery path; a single key that is lost, damaged, or incompatible with a replacement device can otherwise block access.

What does each password manager cost?

KeePassXC is free software. Bitwarden has a permanent free plan, with paid tiers for additional personal, family, team, and enterprise capabilities. The following prices were checked on October 25, 2026 and are billed annually where stated.

Bitwarden plan Price Included capabilities highlighted in the plan description
Free Permanent free plan Unlimited devices and passwords, browser/mobile/desktop apps, encrypted export, and free sharing with another user
Premium $1.65 per month billed annually ($19.80 per year) Integrated authenticator, file attachments, emergency access, security reports, and sharing with one other user
Families $3.99 per month for up to six users billed annually ($47.88 per year) Six premium accounts, unlimited sharing, and unlimited collections
Teams $4 per user per month billed annually Centralized ownership, event logs, directory synchronization, and SCIM provisioning
Enterprise $6 per user per month billed annually Granular access control, passwordless SSO, enterprise policies, self-host flexibility, and a free Families plan for users

The price comparison is not simply “free versus paid.” KeePassXC has no subscription, but you may spend time or money on storage, backups, compatible mobile software, and hardware keys. Bitwarden’s free tier can cover an individual who needs synchronized access; paid tiers become relevant when sharing, emergency access, attachments, or organizational controls matter.

Which features matter when you import, export, or switch?

Portability favors both products, but the mechanics differ. KeePassXC provides importers for CSV, 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and KeePass1. It also supports encrypted export workflows. Bitwarden supports encrypted export, allowing you to retain a portable copy or migrate to another manager.

Moving into KeePassXC

  1. Export your existing vault from the current manager in a format KeePassXC can import, preferably an encrypted export when available.
  2. Open KeePassXC and use the appropriate importer, then map fields such as usernames, URLs, notes, attachments, and one-time-password secrets.
  3. Review high-value records manually. Check that passkeys, attachments, custom fields, and TOTP seeds survived the conversion.
  4. Save the new KDBX file, create a separate backup, and test opening both the working copy and backup before deleting the old vault.
  5. Only after verification, remove the exported plaintext file and clear it from recycle bins or temporary folders.

Moving into Bitwarden

  1. Export the old manager’s vault using its documented export function and keep the file protected during the move.
  2. In Bitwarden, open the web vault’s import tool, choose the source format, and upload the export on a trusted device.
  3. Inspect folders or collections, attachments, custom fields, passkeys, and authenticator entries; formats do not always map every field identically.
  4. Sign in from each browser, desktop client, and phone you intend to use, then verify a sample of critical accounts.
  5. Delete the temporary export after confirming the new vault and retain an encrypted backup if your recovery plan calls for one.

How do I set up KeePassXC safely?

A careful setup turns the local-file model into a dependable workflow rather than a single point of failure.

  1. Install the desktop application on Windows, macOS, or Linux from the project’s official distribution channel.
  2. Create a new KDBX database and choose a long, unique database password. KeePassXC lets you configure AES-256 or Twofish, key-transformation settings, and optional key-file protection.
  3. Decide where the working file lives. A local folder gives the smallest synchronization surface; a cloud folder can synchronize computers but adds provider and conflict considerations.
  4. Create and test backups. Keep a dated copy in a separate location and open it periodically to confirm it is usable.
  5. Enable browser integration for your browser, then install the matching KeePassXC-Browser extension and approve the connection from the desktop app.
  6. Add TOTP, attachments, and passkeys deliberately. Confirm each item appears correctly before retiring the old manager.
  7. Plan phone access. Because there is no official KeePassXC mobile app, choose a compatible mobile KDBX client and verify that your synchronization method works before depending on it.
  8. Protect the unlock path. If you add a key file or YubiKey challenge-response, keep a secure backup and document how a trusted successor can use it.

How do I set up Bitwarden safely?

  1. Create the account with a unique master password that you do not reuse anywhere else.
  2. Install the official clients you need: browser extension, desktop application, and mobile app. Sign in only on devices you control.
  3. Turn on two-step login. Prefer a hardware security key when it fits your devices, and keep a recovery method that is stored separately from the primary device.
  4. Import or add credentials. Review folders, attachments, passkeys, and authenticator data instead of assuming every field converted perfectly.
  5. Configure sharing. Use individual sharing for a partner or colleague, collections for organized group access, and the appropriate Families, Teams, or Enterprise administration features for larger groups.
  6. Set emergency access when your plan supports it, and choose a trusted contact who understands the request and approval process.
  7. Export an encrypted backup after setup and store it where you can retrieve it without leaving a plaintext copy on the computer.

Which manager fits common workflows?

Choose KeePassXC when control is your priority

  • You primarily use Windows, macOS, or Linux computers.
  • You want an encrypted file that remains under your direct control.
  • You prefer to choose your own synchronization provider, removable media, and backup policy.
  • You want no subscription and are comfortable maintaining recovery material.
  • You need encryption choices, optional key files, challenge-response hardware support, SSH Agent, or detailed local database handling.

Choose Bitwarden when convenience and coordination matter

  • You need official iPhone or Android access as part of the normal setup.
  • You regularly add devices and want synchronization without copying files.
  • A household needs shared credentials, collections, emergency access, or six linked premium accounts.
  • A team needs ownership controls, event logs, directory synchronization, or SCIM provisioning.
  • You want account-level support and are willing to rely on a hosted service or operate an eligible self-hosted deployment.

Use a deliberate hybrid only with clear boundaries

Some experienced users keep a primary vault in one product and a narrowly scoped emergency or archival copy in another. If you do this, define which vault is authoritative, how often the secondary copy is updated, and how you remove stale credentials. Two unsynchronized “primary” vaults create more opportunities for an old password or revoked session to remain in circulation.

What are the most common failure modes?

A KeePassXC database will not open

First distinguish a wrong password from a damaged or incomplete file. Try the last known good backup, confirm that a required key file or hardware token is present, and avoid repeatedly editing a file that may be corrupted. If the database opens on another device, make a fresh backup immediately and replace the damaged working copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two KeePassXC copies contain different edits

Stop opening both copies until you identify which entries changed. Preserve both files, compare the timestamps and records, then merge deliberately in one database and archive the originals. Prevent recurrence by waiting for cloud synchronization to finish and by avoiding simultaneous edits on multiple devices.

  • The information below is per-pack only
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks.

Browser filling does not work

For KeePassXC, verify that browser integration is enabled in the desktop application, the correct extension is installed, and the database is unlocked. On Linux, remember that Auto-Type is limited to X11; browser integration may be the practical alternative under Wayland. For Bitwarden, confirm the extension is signed in to the intended account and that the vault has completed synchronization.

A phone cannot reach a KeePassXC vault

Check that the mobile KDBX application supports your database format and that the synchronization folder contains the current file. Confirm file permissions and avoid editing from two clients at once. If maintaining this chain is more work than you want, Bitwarden’s official mobile workflow is the simpler fit.

A Bitwarden user loses account access

Use the configured two-step-login recovery method and any emergency-access arrangement before making changes. A hardware key should not be the only way into the account; keep a second approved method and ensure trusted family or team administrators know their responsibilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you decide?

Start with the device and people questions, not the feature checklist. If phone access, automatic synchronization, or shared household credentials are non-negotiable, Bitwarden removes several layers of setup. If your priority is an offline-first encrypted file, no subscription, and complete control over where data is stored, KeePassXC is the more coherent design.

Then price the responsibility you are accepting. KeePassXC’s software cost is zero, but you own synchronization, backups, mobile compatibility, and recovery. Bitwarden’s free plan may cover one person, while Premium, Families, Teams, and Enterprise add services whose value depends on how many people need access and how formal your administration must be.

Finally, protect whichever workflow you select with a unique master password, tested backups or exports, two-step protection where available, and a documented recovery plan. Those operational choices matter more than choosing a product based on an unsupported claim that one manager is categorically safer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move from Bitwarden to KeePassXC later?

Yes. KeePassXC includes a Bitwarden importer, so you can export your vault, import it into a new KDBX database, and verify critical records before deleting the export. Pay particular attention to attachments, passkeys, custom fields, and TOTP secrets because conversion formats may not carry every field identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a KeePassXC database be shared with someone who uses a phone?

Only through a separate compatible mobile KDBX application and a synchronization method that both people can access. KeePassXC itself has no official mobile app, so test the complete sharing and backup process before making the database essential to a household.

Does Bitwarden replace a separate authenticator app?

Bitwarden’s integrated authenticator is included with Premium and higher plans, not described as a universal feature of the permanent free tier. Decide whether consolidating passwords and one-time codes in one account fits your threat model and recovery plan.

What should I do with an old export after changing password managers?

Keep it only as long as needed to verify the import, then delete the plaintext or otherwise unprotected copy from the computer, recycle bin, cloud-sync history, and removable media. Retain an encrypted backup when your recovery policy requires one, and document where it is stored.
