Some original Nintendo Switch accessories work with Switch 2, but compatibility is selective. Original Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller pair wirelessly; Joy-Con cannot attach to or charge from the Switch 2 console. The original Switch dock cannot be used, although its AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly. An ordinary, non-Express microSD card can show old screenshots and videos but cannot store Switch 2 games. Original Joy-Con attachments remain useful for certain games, while Joy-Con 2 needs different physical accessories. The practical way to decide is to check each item for wireless support, physical fit, charging, TV-mode power, storage format and game-specific requirements rather than treating compatibility as a simple yes-or-no question.

Which original Nintendo Switch controllers work with Switch 2?

Most original Nintendo controllers that connect wirelessly can still be used, but the connection does not make every physical or charging feature carry over. Nintendo’s US compatibility guidance lists the following limits and exceptions.

Original accessory Switch 2 use Important limitation
Joy-Con (original Switch) Wireless play Cannot slide onto Switch 2, charge on the console, or wake a sleeping Switch 2 according to Nintendo UK guidance
Switch Pro Controller Wireless play; USB charging through the Switch 2 dock Does not have the newer controller’s C Button, GL/GR remappable buttons or audio jack
NES controllers Wireless play in suitable games Need an original Switch or an original-Joy-Con-compatible charging accessory for charging
SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers Wireless play in suitable games Nintendo says they can charge by USB through the Switch 2 dock; their layouts are not appropriate for every game
GameCube controllers Work through the existing GameCube Controller Adapter Adapter connects to a Switch 2 dock USB port and is specified for TV mode

See Nintendo’s detailed compatibility table for the model-by-model conditions: Nintendo Switch accessories compatibility.

Can I use original Joy-Con?

Yes. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 for games that support them. They cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 rails, so they also cannot recharge from the console. Keep an original Switch nearby for charging, or use an original-Joy-Con-compatible charging grip or the Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way). Those products charge original Joy-Con; they are not charging accessories for Joy-Con 2.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Nintendo UK’s compatibility page adds a specific limitation: pressing the HOME Button on original Switch Joy-Con or other original Switch controllers cannot wake a sleeping Switch 2. The US table reviewed for this guidance does not state that limitation, so treat it as Nintendo UK’s regional wording rather than a universal claim about every software revision. The UK page is at Nintendo UK accessory compatibility.

Is the original Switch Pro Controller still useful?

Yes. It pairs wirelessly and can be charged by connecting a USB cable to the Switch 2 dock. Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Pro Controller as a feature upgrade, not a requirement: its C Button, remappable GL and GR buttons, and audio jack are the main additions listed by Nintendo. If those controls are not important to you, the older Pro Controller remains a workable gamepad.

Compatibility is not reversible. Nintendo’s US FAQ says Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Switch. Do not assume that a controller working forward from the old console will also work backward. The FAQ is available at Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ.

What about NES, SNES, N64, Genesis and GameCube controllers?

Nintendo lists original NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis wireless controllers as compatible for appropriate games. The NES model has a special charging dependency: use an original Switch or a charging grip or stand designed for original Joy-Con. SNES, N64 and Genesis controllers can charge by USB through the Switch 2 dock, according to Nintendo.

Existing wired GameCube controllers are supported through the original GameCube Controller Adapter plugged into a Switch 2 dock USB port in TV mode. This does not turn a GameCube pad into a general-purpose replacement for every Switch 2 game; its button layout remains game-dependent.

Will the original Switch dock, power adapter and HDMI cable work?

The original dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Nintendo states, “The Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Use the dock supplied with Switch 2 or an official Switch 2 Dock Set. The separate set is intended as a replacement or as a second TV station and includes the newer dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable; a Switch 2 console already includes one dock.

Original item Result with Switch 2 What to do
Switch dock Incompatible Use the Switch 2 dock; do not treat USB-C physical fit as proof that an unnamed third-party dock is certified
Switch AC adapter Can charge Switch 2 when connected directly It cannot provide enough output for Switch 2 TV mode; use the official Switch 2 adapter with the dock
HDMI cable included with original Switch Incompatible according to Nintendo because the cable standards differ Use the cable included with Switch 2; this does not mean every separately purchased HDMI cable is unusable

Nintendo identifies the official Switch 2 AC Adapter as a replacement for charging the console or powering its dock. The same support page covers dock, adapter and cable restrictions: Nintendo Support’s accessory guidance.

Can I reuse my old microSD card in Switch 2?

Only for a narrow purpose. Switch 2 requires microSD Express for expandable game storage. Nintendo’s wording is explicit: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” A conventional microSD card from the original console may be read for original-Switch screenshots and videos, but it cannot save or load Switch 2 games.

Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB and says an internet system update is required the first time an Express card is used. The important shopping check is the words microSD Express on the card or packaging, not merely the microSD shape. Nintendo’s US accessory catalog identifies a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card as one example, but capacity and availability can vary by seller and region. Storage specifications are listed at Nintendo’s microSD Express support page.

  • Want to play Switch 2 games from expandable storage? Move to a supported microSD Express card, up to Nintendo’s 2 TB limit.
  • Want to view old captures? A non-Express card can still serve as a source for original-Switch screenshots and videos.
  • Only have an old card? Do not format or rely on it for Switch 2 game data; obtain an Express card and complete the required internet update.

Do original Joy-Con grips, straps and motion accessories fit Joy-Con 2?

No. Original Joy-Con straps, grips, charging grips, wheels, Ring-Con, leg strap and original-Joy-Con battery packs are shaped for the older controllers and do not fit Joy-Con 2. They are not automatically obsolete, however: they remain usable when you are playing with original Joy-Con.

Accessories that still have a game-specific role

  • Ring-Con: Nintendo specifically allows original Joy-Con with Ring Fit Adventure.
  • Leg strap: It remains usable with original Joy-Con for supported Nintendo Switch Sports play.
  • Original adjustable charging stand: Nintendo lists this stand as incompatible with Switch 2.
  • Original Switch stylus: Nintendo UK’s page lists it as compatible; this is a UK-published qualification, not a statement that every regional accessory list is identical.

Keep the controller and the attachment together in your planning. A Ring-Con may still be useful because original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, but that does not mean the Ring-Con fits or communicates with Joy-Con 2.

Which games still require original Switch hardware?

Some games depend on sensors, cameras, controller shapes or cardboard accessories that Switch 2 does not reproduce. Nintendo’s compatibility guide calls out several cases where original Joy-Con or other original hardware matters.

  • Game Builder Garage: Nintendo identifies original Joy-Con-related compatibility considerations.
  • WarioWare: Move It!: Motion-focused play can require original Joy-Con hardware.
  • Nintendo Switch Sports: Soccer Shoot-Out is listed among the modes with original-controller requirements.
  • Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit: The Switch 2 console does not fit the VR Kit goggles, so that game cannot be played with those goggles. Other Labo kits have partial physical-fit limitations rather than one blanket result.

Original and Switch 2 game cards both physically fit the Switch 2 game-card slot, but insertion alone does not prove that a title is fully compatible. Nintendo’s general compatibility-test overview is explicitly current as of June 5, 2025; Nintendo directs readers to an individual game page or the Nintendo eShop for the latest title-specific status. Check the guide at Nintendo’s compatible-games guide before buying a replacement accessory for one particular title.

How should I decide what to keep, replace or buy?

Use the following decision sequence before spending money. It separates a controller that can still play from an accessory that must physically fit, charge or deliver TV output.

  1. Name the activity. Decide whether you need handheld play, wireless multiplayer, TV mode, a motion game, GameCube controls or expandable storage.
  2. Check the connection type. Original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller can pair wirelessly; the original dock cannot provide the Switch 2 TV connection.
  3. Check physical fit. Anything that slides onto Joy-Con 2, such as an old grip, wheel or battery pack, should be treated as incompatible unless Nintendo specifically lists it otherwise.
  4. Check charging separately. A controller may play wirelessly but still need an original Switch, a compatible charging stand or a USB connection to the Switch 2 dock.
  5. Check power and video requirements. The old AC adapter is suitable for direct charging only, and the old dock and included HDMI cable should not be used as Switch 2 TV-mode replacements.
  6. Check the game page. Sensor, camera, motion and Labo requirements can override otherwise good controller compatibility.
  7. Check storage labeling. Choose microSD Express, not a conventional microSD card, for Switch 2 game storage.
Your priority Keep or obtain Reason
Occasional wireless multiplayer Original Joy-Con, with a separate original-Joy-Con charging solution Wireless play works, but Switch 2 cannot charge Joy-Con on its rails
Traditional gamepad controls Original Switch Pro Controller It pairs and charges through the Switch 2 dock; newer controls are optional features
Second TV location Official Switch 2 Dock Set The original dock is incompatible and the console already includes one dock
Switch 2 game expansion Verified microSD Express card Non-Express cards cannot store or load Switch 2 games
Existing wired GameCube pads Original GameCube Controller Adapter Nintendo supports the adapter through a Switch 2 dock USB port in TV mode

What are the common compatibility mistakes?

  • Assuming wireless means attachable: Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly but never slide onto Switch 2.
  • Using the old dock because the plug fits: Nintendo explicitly marks it incompatible; USB-C shape is not a certification standard.
  • Expecting the old power brick to run TV mode: It can charge the console directly but lacks the output Nintendo requires for TV mode.
  • Buying any microSD card: The Express designation is mandatory for Switch 2 game storage.
  • Forgetting the charging plan: An original Joy-Con set needs an original console or a compatible charging grip or stand.
  • Assuming every game behaves alike: Motion, infrared-camera, Ring-Con, leg-strap and Labo requirements can create exceptions.
  • Expecting reverse compatibility: Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller do not work with the original Switch.

How we determined the compatibility categories

The useful categories come directly from Nintendo’s published guidance: wireless controller pairing, physical attachment, charging method, TV-mode power, HDMI signaling, storage format and game-specific hardware. Nintendo’s US support pages provide the primary compatibility statements, while Nintendo UK’s page supplies the additional HOME-button wake limitation and stylus listing. Because Nintendo’s game overview carries a June 5, 2025 status date, title-specific pages and the eShop remain the authority for later changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep an old Joy-Con charging stand after moving to Switch 2?

Yes, if you are retaining original Joy-Con. A Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way) is for original Joy-Con, not Joy-Con 2, and Nintendo lists the original adjustable charging stand as incompatible with Switch 2. The stand therefore remains a separate charging solution rather than a console accessory.

Will an unbranded USB-C dock work if the original dock does not?

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance only establishes that the original dock is incompatible and does not certify an unnamed third-party dock merely because its connector fits. For TV mode, use the Switch 2 dock and the power and video accessories specified for it unless Nintendo explicitly lists another product.

Can I use an original Switch stylus with Switch 2?

Nintendo UK’s accessory page lists the original Switch stylus as compatible. Because that statement comes from the UK page, check the accessory guidance for your region if the stylus is essential to a particular title or application.

Does every Nintendo Labo kit fail on Switch 2?

No. Nintendo specifically says the console does not fit the Toy-Con 04: VR Kit goggles, making that game unplayable with the goggles, while other Labo kits have partial physical-fit limitations. The result must be checked per kit rather than inferred from one VR incompatibility.
