To avoid missing story and difficulty trophies on PS5, check the trophy list and a roadmap for your exact game and edition before you start, then protect saves before irreversible choices. There is no PS5-wide rule that story trophies are automatic, that the hardest difficulty unlocks every lower-difficulty trophy, or that every game offers chapter select. The safest plan depends on how that game triggers trophies and lets you replay content.
Why can a trophy be missable on PS5?
A trophy is missable when you can pass the point needed to earn it without a reliable way to return. That may mean choosing one story branch over another, missing a quest, finishing an ending, or completing a run under a specific restriction. Whether you can recover afterward depends on the game’s replay and save systems—not on the PS5 platform itself.
PlayStation says trophy conditions vary by game. A story trophy might unlock automatically at a particular event, while another may require a specific ending, a complete run, a rank, or a playthrough on a named difficulty. How do I check a PS5 game’s trophy requirements?
On your PS5, open Profile picture > Trophies > game > trophy. Read the displayed condition, then compare it with a roadmap for the exact game and edition you own. PlayStation documents that trophy requirements differ from game to game, so the console list and a relevant roadmap answer different parts of the question: what the trophy requires and how the game lets you reach that requirement.
Before beginning a long run, write down the details that could change your route:
- Missable opportunities: Which choices, quests, endings, collectibles, or chapter transitions can close an opportunity?
- Replay options: Does this version offer chapter select, mission replay, New Game Plus, or none of those? Do not assume a feature exists because another game has it.
- Save controls: Can you keep multiple manual saves, or does the game mainly rely on a single advancing save? Confirm how reloading works before you need it.
- Run conditions: Does the trophy require a particular difficulty, rank, mode, fresh New Game, or uninterrupted completion?
- Stacking: Does the roadmap confirm that your chosen difficulty or rank earns other difficulty trophies too? Treat stacking as unverified until you find a game-specific answer.
- Recovery cost: If you miss the requirement, will a chapter replay suffice, or would you need to replay a large portion of the game?
Check that the roadmap matches the PS5 version, not merely a similarly named earlier release or another edition’s downloadable content. Requirements and replay behavior can differ across versions. Roadmaps are useful, but they describe their specific game and edition; they cannot establish a universal PS5 rule.
Do difficulty trophies stack on PS5?

The contrast with The Last of Us Part I on PS5 is just as useful: its roadmap says the base platinum has no difficulty requirement. That does not establish anything about other editions, additional content, or other games in the series. If a trophy list includes a difficulty name, also confirm whether you must complete the whole game at that setting, whether a rank is involved, and whether a fresh start is required.
For a difficult run, make the plan before starting: note the required mode and rank, check what the roadmap says stacks, and confirm whether changing settings or loading a save could invalidate the run. If the requirement is unclear, do not gamble a full playthrough on an assumption. A quick check before launch can prevent replaying hours of content.

How should I protect saves before a point of no return?
Keep a usable checkpoint before the branch or ending, and make sure you know how to restore it. An in-game manual save, when the game allows one, is often the most direct checkpoint; cloud storage can be an additional option, but automatic synchronization may replace the older save you meant to preserve.
- Find the exact branch point. Use a roadmap to identify the decision, ending, or transition that closes the opportunity. Do not rely on a vague warning such as “near the end” if the guide identifies a specific point.
- Save while the opportunity is still open. If the game supports multiple manual slots, use a distinct slot and keep it separate from the save you expect to advance. Confirm that the saved game can actually be loaded before relying on it.
- Check cloud-sync behavior. PlayStation Plus members can manually upload or download PS5 saved data. However, PlayStation says, “For PS5 games, both your console and cloud storage will sync to the most recent data.” If you intend to preserve an older cloud checkpoint, adjust auto-sync for that game and verify sync status before proceeding. Otherwise, a newer save may replace the older one.
- Complete the branch and verify the result. Check the trophy list after the relevant event. If the trophy has not unlocked, do not overwrite the only checkpoint until you have checked the game’s conditions and recovery options.
PlayStation’s PS5 cloud-storage instructions explain manual uploads and downloads. The service documents up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data. Cloud storage is useful as a checkpoint option, but it is not a guarantee that a particular game’s save can be rolled back safely: confirm the game’s save behavior and the console’s sync status first.
Elden Ring illustrates a story-branch use case, not a difficulty-trophy strategy. Its roadmap describes alternative ending trophies and a pre-ending cloud-save approach, and says the game has no selectable difficulty. That example shows why it is important to identify the type of trophy you are pursuing: branching endings and harder-mode completions present different problems.

Can I use a USB drive to preserve an individual PS5 save?
PlayStation documents saving PS5 data to USB as part of a full-console backup, not as a simple way to export and restore one PS5 game save. Restoring that backup erases current console data, so it is not a casual checkpoint method for switching between two versions of one save.
A USB flash drive can have a legitimate role in a console backup; PlayStation supports USB drives formatted as FAT32 or exFAT for that purpose. But the trade-off matters: a restore replaces current console data, and “Trophies aren’t included in the backup data.” Sync trophies separately if you use a console backup, and read PlayStation’s instructions before restoring anything. In short, do not treat USB console backup as equivalent to creating a separate, reversible save slot. Prefer the game’s own manual-save options when available, or use cloud storage only after you understand its synchronization behavior. Keep trophies synchronized separately; restoring gameplay data does not restore trophy records from the USB backup.
What should I do during a trophy run?
Track the few requirements that can derail the run, but keep the game’s own counters and save system in view as well as the PS5 trophy list. On PS5, you can pin up to five trophies per game so important conditions are easier to monitor.
- Pin the relevant trophies. While playing, use the control-center trophies card to keep up to five selected trophies readily visible. Pin the missable story or run-condition trophies rather than a long list of unrelated goals. PlayStation documents this feature in its trophy instructions.
- Use the game’s counters where provided. A trophy tracker may not show every relevant in-game challenge or restriction. For example, the Resident Evil 4 roadmap recommends checking the in-game challenge counter after chapters during a restricted-weapon run. This is advice for that game, not a universal PS5 feature.
- Maintain separate saves if possible. Before a major transition, use a new manual slot if the game supports it. Do not overwrite the only known-good checkpoint until the trophy condition is confirmed.
- Check progress before moving on. At a chapter end or after a major story event, confirm the intended challenge or trophy progress while the relevant save is still available. If the game’s roadmap identifies a one-way transition, pause before crossing it.

What if I already missed a story or difficulty trophy?
First determine whether the game offers a recovery route that actually satisfies the trophy. Chapter select, encounter replay, an earlier manual save, or New Game Plus can each help in some games, but none should be assumed to work for a particular condition until the game’s roadmap confirms it.
For the PS5 remake of The Last of Us Part I, the roadmap describes chapter select for cleanup and also warns that selecting an earlier chapter can lock access to later chapters until a later save is loaded. Preserve the furthest-story save if you use chapter select, and follow the guide’s edition-specific instructions rather than treating chapter selection as risk-free. By contrast, the Resident Evil 4 (2023) roadmap reports no chapter select, making manual saves and planning more important for that game.
If an earned trophy is missing from your profile, synchronization may resolve a display issue, but it cannot award a trophy for a gameplay condition you did not meet. On PS5, try Profile > Trophies > Options > Sync Trophies. Then confirm the trophy’s condition and whether the game registered it; do not confuse a sync attempt with a recovery method.

As a final pre-run check, ask: Can I replay the missed content? Can I preserve a save before the one-way point? What exact run condition earns the trophy?
