Split keyboards are not a single layout or a guaranteed comfort fix. The right starting point is to decide how much you want to change your typing habits, which features you actually need, and whether you want a ready-made board or a DIY project. Hackaday’s March 5, 2026 episode of Keebin’ With Kristina points beginners to a guide that walks through those choices.
What counts as a split keyboard?
A split keyboard separates the left- and right-hand key areas instead of keeping them joined in one conventional rectangle. That describes the physical format, not a single key arrangement: the episode distinguishes familiar row-staggered layouts, column-staggered layouts, and ortholinear layouts.
These designs are often considered with comfort and ergonomics in mind, but those are design goals, not established health outcomes. The Hackaday episode does not present controlled evidence that a split keyboard prevents pain or improves health for every typist.
Choose a layout based on how much you want to adapt
Row-staggered
Row-staggered boards retain the offset between rows familiar from many conventional keyboards. They are a reasonable category to explore if you want to investigate a split format while changing as little of your established typing style as possible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Column-staggered
Column-staggered boards arrange keys in straighter vertical columns rather than preserving the familiar row offsets. This is a more substantial change in key geometry, so consider whether you are willing to adapt your hand movement and typing habits.
Ortholinear
Ortholinear layouts place keys in a grid. Like column-staggered designs, they may ask you to learn a different physical arrangement than a conventional row-staggered board. The guide’s decision path is useful here: decide first whether you want minimal change or are open to retraining, then narrow the layout.

List the features you need before choosing a board
Start with your actual work and setup rather than a feature checklist from someone else. The episode recommends considering the features that matter to you and your keymap, including whether you want to move beyond QWERTY. Map those needs to the boards you evaluate:
- Typing layout: Check the physical arrangement and whether the keymap can support the layout you want to use.
- Key count and arrangement: Consider how many keys you need and whether you are comfortable relying on layers or alternate key functions if a design is compact.
- Pointing device: Decide whether you want a separate mouse or a pointing device integrated into the keyboard. The episode’s Koumori example includes a trackpad, but that is a feature of that project, not a requirement for split keyboards.
- Customization: Establish whether you want to change key assignments or use a non-QWERTY layout, and confirm that the specific board supports the configuration you expect.
- Build approach: Decide whether you want a finished product or are prepared to assemble and configure a DIY design.
The Hackaday episode does not verify model-by-model specifications or current retail availability, so check a maker’s current documentation before treating a feature as available on a particular keyboard.

Buying a finished keyboard or building one
Both routes are legitimate. A finished keyboard can suit someone who wants to choose a layout and features without taking on assembly. DIY can suit a reader who wants to build around a particular design or is interested in the project itself; it also requires attention to parts and compatibility.
The episode describes the Koumori as a 28-key build, with an RP2040 Zero controller, a 40 mm Cirque trackpad, Kailh V1 Choc switches, matching keycaps, and a PCB and case designed with Ergogen. These are components of that compact project, not universal requirements or a general shopping list for split keyboards.

The episode also describes Jdable, which attaches tactile Braille keycaps to standard keyboard bases. Hackaday reported in 2026 that Jdable had reached nearly 1,000 blind or visually impaired students in the United States and abroad. That is an approximate figure reported by the article, not an independently verified program total.

A practical way to narrow your options
- Choose your adaptation level: Decide whether you want to preserve a familiar row-staggered typing style or are open to a column-staggered or ortholinear arrangement.
- Write down your must-have features: Include keymap needs, key count, and whether you want a pointing device.
- Pick a purchase path: Choose a finished board if you do not want to build; choose DIY only if the assembly and configuration are part of what you want.
- Verify the exact model: Check the maker’s current specifications for layout, features, and compatibility rather than assuming that a category-level description applies to every board.
