Kalshi is developing exchange-traded futures tied to U.S. headline and core Consumer Price Index (CPI), with Bloomberg reporting a possible December 2026 rollout. Kalshi has confirmed that it is working on CPI futures but has not confirmed that launch date or published final terms. The proposed contracts would differ from Kalshi’s existing monthly CPI event markets by offering dated exposure to inflation rather than a simple yes-or-no outcome on whether CPI crosses a threshold.
What are Kalshi’s proposed CPI futures?
The reported product would be a listed futures contract whose value is linked to a specified U.S. inflation reading. Bloomberg says Kalshi is considering contracts on both headline CPI and core CPI. The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines CPI as the average change over time in prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of goods and services.
Headline CPI includes the full index. Core CPI removes food and energy, categories that can be unusually volatile. The exact index series, reference month, contract size, settlement calculation and expiration conventions have not been published.

A futures structure could let a participant express a position over a dated inflation release or hedge an inflation-sensitive exposure without choosing only a single threshold. That potential benefit does not establish how the final contracts will pay out or whether they will attract sufficient trading volume.

When will Kalshi launch inflation futures?
Bloomberg reported on October 23, 2026 that Kalshi is targeting December 2026. The timing came from people familiar with the plan, while Kalshi confirmed product development but declined to provide rollout details. December should therefore be treated as a reported target, not an announced go-live date.

Why is Kalshi pursuing an inflation-futures market?
Bloomberg says Kalshi is pitching banks and hedge funds and has engaged Michael Ashton, managing principal of Enduring Investments and a former Barclays trader, to help design the contracts and build institutional interest. Those firms already use inflation-linked bonds and over-the-counter inflation swaps, so a listed venue could offer standardized terms and a central marketplace.
Ashton told Bloomberg, “There’s no exchange that trades this and they want to be the inflation exchange.” That is his description of Kalshi’s ambition, not evidence that a liquid market has already formed. A successful launch would still depend on contract design, market makers, participation and reliable settlement.

Does CME offer CPI futures, and how does ICE fit in?
Bloomberg reports that CME previously tried CPI futures but does not currently offer a directly comparable CPI futures contract. CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) operate related interest-rate and bond futures markets, so they are competitors in adjacent products rather than confirmed current providers of the proposed CPI contracts.
That distinction matters: the reported competition is about where investors can trade inflation or interest-rate risk, not a claim that CME or ICE presently lists the same headline- or core-CPI futures Kalshi is developing.

- which CPI release, reference period and index vintage determine settlement;
- expiration dates, listing tenor and trading hours;
- fees, margin or other access requirements;
- the precise settlement formula for headline and core CPI;
- how much liquidity will be available after launch.
Until Kalshi publishes specifications, comparisons with swaps, inflation-linked bonds or other futures can only be conceptual. A dated contract may offer more graduated exposure than a binary threshold event, but its risk, margin treatment and basis to a trader’s underlying inflation exposure will depend on the final terms.

Kalshi’s help center generally describes the exchange as a CFTC-regulated Designated Contract Market. A September 2026 SEC notice concerns a separate proposed rule change for perpetual security futures and states that the CFTC had not approved that proposal at the time. That notice does not determine whether the proposed CPI futures will launch or what approvals they may require.
Readers should distinguish the exchange’s general regulatory designation from approval of a particular new contract. Product-specific status, disclosures and rules will need to be checked when Kalshi publishes them.

Who would use CPI futures?
The reported outreach is aimed primarily at institutional participants active in inflation-linked bonds and swaps, including banks and hedge funds. Those users may seek a standardized listed instrument for hedging or expressing a view on a future CPI outcome.
