CHOICE lists a 0.31 m² cooking area, four burners, cast-iron grill/hotplate material, stainless-steel burners and electric ignition. Its public listing records a historical price of $349 and marks the model discontinued. That price is a past listing, not a current recommended retail price.
Is the Jumbuck Stardom any good?
It is potentially good value when found cheaply in sound condition, especially if you need capacity, hooded cooking and a side burner. It is a much weaker proposition when bought without an inspection because discontinuation makes parts and warranty support less certain, while owner reports identify recurring problems with ignition, grease-tray access, heat evenness and burner durability.
Where the design helps
- Four independently controlled burners: You can create hotter and cooler areas instead of treating the entire grill as one temperature zone. How does the four-burner and side-burner layout work?
The four main burners run across the primary firebox. Lighting only some burners creates a two-zone arrangement: food over a lit burner receives direct heat, while food over an unlit burner can cook more gently under the hood. Moving food between zones is useful for searing, finishing and avoiding flare-ups, but the exact temperature pattern must be learned on the individual barbecue because the published specification does not include a heat-map test.
The side burner is independent of the main grill. It is best treated as a small outdoor hob for a pan, not as extra grill area. Keep its lid and surrounding surfaces clear, and confirm that the pan sits securely before turning the gas on.
With the hood closed, the thermometer gives a rough indication of the air temperature near the top of the hood. The warming rack can hold cooked food away from the hottest surface. Rotisserie readiness means the body is designed to accept compatible rotisserie hardware; it does not establish that a complete kit, motor or spit was supplied in every package.

Some owners report good cooking results, quick heating, useful capacity and a convenient side burner. Those accounts support the idea that a correctly functioning Stardom can handle regular family cooking and offers more flexibility than a small two-burner grill.
Negative experiences
Other owners describe ignition failures, a grease tray that is difficult to remove, doors opening as the cart is moved, uneven heat and burners deteriorating after limited use. What should you inspect before buying a used or old-stock unit?
A hands-on check is more important than the asking price. Perform the following inspection with the seller’s permission and with the barbecue outdoors in a safe, ventilated location.
- Confirm identity: Look for the HS-884502 model reference or I/N 3180779. Similar-looking four-burner barbecues may use different burners, grates and covers.
- Check the structure: Inspect the powder-coated cabinet, door hinges, fasteners, castors and handles. Push the cart gently; it should not rack, wobble or open its doors when moved.
- Inspect the hood and firebox: Look for deep rust, holes, warped panels and chipped or flaking vitreous enamel. Surface discoloration is different from corrosion that has weakened the metal.

- Remove the grease tray: Verify that it slides out without force, is not perforated by rust and can be refitted securely. The reported difficulty of removal makes this a particularly important check.
- Check accessories: Confirm the cast-iron grill, hotplate, warming rack, thermometer and any rotisserie brackets are present. Replacement compatibility should be confirmed by model number, not appearance.
- Ask about storage and records: Find out whether it was covered, exposed to coastal air, converted to another gas type or repaired. Receipts and prior part numbers can make later support easier.
Can you still get a cover and replacement parts?
The official product information lists a “BBQ Cover – Available at Bunnings” and provides channels for spare-parts enquiries. A fitted weather cover is the most defensible accessory purchase because it protects the hood, cabinet and controls from rain and sun while the barbecue is stored.
Search for a Jumbuck Stardom 4 Burner BBQ cover, but verify the listing’s dimensions and stated model compatibility against HS-884502 before ordering. A cover made for a different four-burner cart can be too short, too tight around the side burner or unable to accommodate the hood.
Burners, hotplates, grills and ignition components may appear in spare-part searches, but “fits a Jumbuck” is not enough evidence of compatibility. Match the model number, dimensions, mounting points and gas connection. If the seller cannot confirm an exact fit, treat the part as unverified and include the possibility of custom sourcing in your cost calculation.
Can the Stardom be converted to natural gas?
The official specification describes the barbecue as ready for natural-gas conversion, and the product information states: “This barbecue can be converted to natural gas by a licensed plumber or gas fitter with the correct conversion kit.” The kit and the professional installation are separate requirements; readiness does not mean that a kit was included with a used barbecue.
Do not change jets, regulators or hose connections yourself. Before arranging work, identify the exact HS-884502 model, obtain the correct conversion kit and confirm that the proposed installation complies with local gas rules and the location’s ventilation requirements. If those details cannot be verified, continue using the appliance only with the fuel configuration and components approved for it.

How should you maintain an older Stardom?
Maintenance should focus on keeping gas paths clear, controlling grease and preventing water from sitting on vulnerable surfaces. After the barbecue has cooled, remove food residue from the cast-iron cooking surfaces, empty the grease system safely and check that the tray and its guides remain sound.
