To get started with JSP on Linux, install Java 17 or later, run Apache Tomcat 11, and deploy a web application containing a hello.jsp file. Then open http://localhost:8080/myapp/hello.jsp in a browser. The setup flow is portable across Linux distributions, but Java package names and installation commands vary, so use your distribution’s current OpenJDK guidance rather than assuming one command works everywhere.
What JSP does
JSP, now formally called Jakarta Server Pages (Jakarta Pages), lets you write a server-side page that can produce an HTTP response. A JSP container such as Tomcat translates the page into a servlet implementation and runs it when the page is requested. The browser receives the resulting response, not the JSP source code.
Tomcat 11.0.26, the release documented by Apache on September 9, 2026, implements Servlet 6.1 and Jakarta Pages 4.0. Its Jasper engine handles JSP translation and uses Eclipse JDT by default to compile the generated Java source; Ant and javac are also possible compiler options. Tomcat 11 documentation and the Jasper guide describe the current implementation.
Install Java and get Tomcat
Check the Java version
Tomcat 11 is designed to run on Java 17 or later. Check the installed runtime with java -version; if Java is missing or too old, install a maintained OpenJDK package for your Linux distribution or use an official JDK distribution. Package names and installation commands differ across Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, RHEL, Arch, and other systems, so consult the documentation for the distribution you actually use. Verify the requirement against the Tomcat release documentation when choosing a different Tomcat version.

Start Tomcat using the archive’s Unix instructions. The optional
jsvcroute configures Tomcat as a daemon and requires additional native build tools; it is not necessary for a first local JSP.
Tomcat is a servlet and JSP container with selected Jakarta platform capabilities, not a full Jakarta EE application server. That distinction matters if an application depends on services beyond the specifications and features Tomcat implements; check the Jakarta EE web application tutorial for context on the container role.

Create and deploy a minimal JSP application
Make the page
Create a web application directory named myapp inside Tomcat’s webapps directory, then create hello.jsp in that directory. For a first check, the page can contain ordinary HTML:
<p>Hello, JSP!</p>
A source JSP can be included directly in a web application and handled by the container’s default JSP mapping. The Jakarta Server Pages specification describes this basic packaging model and the minimal “Hello World” approach: Jakarta Server Pages 3.0 specification. Its edition predates Tomcat 11’s Pages 4.0 implementation, but the source-page deployment mechanics are the point relevant here.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Request the page
With Tomcat running, open http://localhost:8080/myapp/hello.jsp. The default context path is based on the application directory name or, for a packaged web application, the WAR filename without the .war extension. For example, deploying myapp.war normally makes its context /myapp. Tomcat can deploy an exploded application directory or a WAR from webapps; the Jakarta EE web application tutorial explains the WAR workflow and context convention.

The browser reports not found: confirm Tomcat is running, the application folder or WAR is in
webapps, and the URL’s context segment matches the deployed directory or WAR basename. Check thathello.jspis in the application’s web root. -
The server reports a JSP compilation error: Jasper translates and compiles the page as part of handling it, so a problem in the JSP can surface on deployment or the first request. Inspect the Tomcat logs and the JSP source for the reported error.
Check compatibility before using older JSP code
Tomcat 11 implements the Jakarta-era Servlet and Pages specifications. Older applications that use pre-Jakarta javax.* APIs may require migration to the corresponding jakarta.* APIs; do not assume legacy code will run unchanged. Use Tomcat’s current version documentation to confirm requirements for the release you intend to use.
Keep the first setup local
Tomcat’s Jasper defaults are intended for web application development. A successful local JSP request demonstrates that the basic page and container work; it does not configure a production deployment. Consult the Jasper guide and Tomcat’s security and production configuration documentation before exposing an application beyond local development.
