To check Journal’s iCloud sync setting in iOS 27, open Settings > your name > iCloud > See All > Journal and make sure the switch is on. To verify that syncing is working in practice, check whether a new or edited entry appears in Journal on another device signed in to the same Apple Account with Journal enabled in iCloud.
Where is the Journal iCloud setting in iOS 27?
The Journal switch is in iCloud’s list of apps that can store and sync data. Follow this path on your iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of Settings to open your Apple Account settings.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap See All next to Saved to iCloud.
- Find Journal and check that its switch is on.
Apple describes this setting as the control for keeping Journal entries and changes available on an iPhone, iPad, and Mac signed in to the same Apple Account with Journal turned on in iCloud settings. The switch confirms that Journal is enabled for iCloud; by itself, it does not show whether a particular recent edit has finished syncing.
How can I tell whether Journal entries are actually syncing?
Check for an entry or edit on a second device that uses the same Apple Account. Seeing the change there is the practical confirmation that it has reached that device through Journal’s cross-device sync.

- On the iPhone where you made the entry, confirm Journal is enabled in the iCloud settings path above.
- On the other iPhone, iPad, or Mac, confirm it is signed in to the same Apple Account and Journal is enabled in iCloud settings.
- Create a small test entry on the first device, or make a minor edit to an existing entry.
- Open Journal on the other device and look for that new entry or edit.
This is a practical check based on Apple’s description of how Journal changes appear across devices. It is different from simply checking the switch: the switch verifies the setting, while seeing the change on the other device verifies the cross-device result.
What does the Journal switch verify—and what does it not show?
The iCloud switch tells you whether Journal is enabled for iCloud on that device. Apple’s Journal support guidance does not describe a Journal-specific live sync percentage, pending-item queue, or last-sync timestamp, so the setting is not a progress monitor.

Apple states that Journal entries are not included in ordinary iCloud device backups. Syncing to iCloud and backing up the iPhone to iCloud are therefore different: an enabled Journal switch does not mean Journal entries are part of an ordinary device backup.

What should I do if Journal is not syncing to my iPad or Mac?
Start by checking the settings and account on both devices. If the switch is enabled and the change still does not appear, check whether iCloud reports a broader account or sync problem.

- Check the Journal setting on each device. Reopen the iCloud settings path and verify that Journal remains enabled wherever you expect entries to appear.
- Check the Apple Account. Confirm that the source and receiving devices are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Look for an iCloud warning in Settings. If you see iCloud Data Not Syncing, Apple advises checking for badges in Settings and following any authentication prompt.
- Contact Apple Support if the warning remains. Apple recommends support if the general iCloud message persists after you follow its prompts.
A missing change on one device is not, by itself, evidence that Journal offers a separate sync-status screen. The documented checks are whether Journal is enabled on the devices and whether the entry or edit appears on another same-account device.
Are Journal entries included in an iCloud backup?
No. Apple says Journal entries are not included in ordinary iCloud backups, even though Journal can sync through iCloud. If you want a full computer backup containing Journal data, Apple identifies an encrypted local backup made on a Mac or PC as the option.

Apple also provides an export option on iPhone: Settings > Apps > Journal > Export All Journal Entries. Exporting entries and backing up a device are preservation options, not ways to check whether a recent entry has synced to another device.

Does the Journal iCloud switch prove that my latest entry has synced?
No. It shows that Journal is enabled for iCloud on that device, but it does not report completion for an individual entry; check the other same-account device for the change.

Can I see a Journal sync percentage or last-sync time?
Apple’s Journal support information does not describe a Journal-specific percentage, queue, or last-sync timestamp. The available checks are the iCloud setting and whether entries or edits appear on another device.
Can I export Journal entries without making a computer backup?
Apple provides an iPhone option called Export All Journal Entries under Settings > Apps > Journal. It is separate from making an encrypted local backup on a Mac or PC.
