To install Joomla on Ubuntu behind Apache and Cloudflare, first match the Ubuntu repository versions to Joomla 6’s PHP and database requirements, then install Apache, PHP, extensions, and a supported database. Unpack Joomla into an Apache document root, complete the browser installer, secure the origin with a valid certificate on port 443, and only then place the web DNS records behind Cloudflare using Full (strict) TLS. This order prevents the common failures caused by an old PHP runtime, an incomplete origin certificate, redirect loops, and lost visitor IP addresses.
The exact package names depend on your Ubuntu release. Treat the commands below as a release-aware procedure: verify the versions available from your enabled repositories instead of copying an older Joomla or PHP recipe unchanged.
What must be compatible before installing Joomla on Ubuntu?
Joomla 6 requires PHP 8.3 at minimum and recommends PHP 8.4, so the first task is confirming that your Ubuntu release can provide a supported PHP version. Apache 2.4 is supported, and the database must meet Joomla’s stated minimum for the engine you choose.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Component | Joomla 6 requirement | What to verify on Ubuntu |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | 8.3 minimum/supported; 8.4 recommended | Check the candidate package and the version returned by php -v. |
| Web server | Apache 2.4 | Confirm the installed Apache release with apache2 -v. |
| MySQL | 8.0.13 minimum | Check the server package and actual server version. |
| MariaDB | 10.4 minimum | Confirm the repository version and server output. |
| PostgreSQL | 12 minimum | Verify the PostgreSQL major version and Joomla driver availability. |
| PHP modules | json, simplexml, dom, zlib, gd, plus mysqlnd, pdo_mysql, or pdo_pgsql | Use php -m after installation and enable the driver matching your database. |
| PHP memory | At least 256 MB recommended | Check the effective value with php -i | grep memory_limit. |
| SEO rewriting | mod_rewrite optional |
Enable it if you plan to use Joomla’s search-engine-friendly URLs. |
These are Joomla’s published technical thresholds, not performance benchmarks. A server can satisfy them and still need more memory or CPU for a large catalogue, traffic spikes, extensions, or image processing.

How do I check whether my Ubuntu release is suitable?
- Identify the release with
cat /etc/os-release. - Inspect the candidate PHP packages with
apt-cache policy phpand, where applicable, the versioned package such asapt-cache policy php8.3. - Check the available database packages and their major versions before installing them.
- Do not add a third-party PHP repository merely because an older tutorial uses one. Confirm that its packages are maintained for your Ubuntu release and that the resulting PHP version is supported by Joomla 6.
Which database should I choose?
MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL are supported alternatives. Joomla does not establish one as universally best, so choose the engine your team already backs up and restores confidently, that your Ubuntu release supports cleanly, and that your hosting or operations tooling can monitor.
| Choice | Minimum named by Joomla | Practical deciding factor |
|---|---|---|
| MySQL | 8.0.13 | Existing MySQL administration, backup, and restore procedures. |
| MariaDB | 10.4 | Availability in your distribution and familiarity with MariaDB tooling. |
| PostgreSQL | 12 | Existing PostgreSQL operations and a correctly installed Joomla PostgreSQL driver. |
Which Apache, PHP, and extension packages should I install?
Install Apache, a repository-supported PHP runtime, the Apache PHP module, the extensions Joomla needs, and one database server. Ubuntu documents the basic package pattern as sudo apt install php libapache2-mod-php; Joomla 6 requires you to extend that pattern with the version-appropriate modules and a supported PHP version.
- Refresh package metadata:
sudo apt update. - Install Apache and the PHP integration package:
sudo apt install apache2 php libapache2-mod-php. If your release exposes versioned PHP packages, use the matching version consistently rather than mixing major versions. - Install the packages that provide
json, simplexml, dom, zlib, andgd, plus the database driver:mysqlndorpdo_mysqlfor MySQL/MariaDB, orpdo_pgsqlfor PostgreSQL. Package names vary by PHP version, so verify them withapt searchand your release documentation. - Install one supported database server and secure its administrative account according to that database’s Ubuntu guidance.
- Restart Apache after PHP packages or the Apache PHP module change:
sudo systemctl restart apache2. - Verify the runtime:
php -v,php -m, andapache2ctl -M. Confirm that the PHP major version, required modules, and Apache module are present before copying Joomla files.
Which PHP settings are needed for the Joomla installer?
Joomla’s installation guidance lists these minimum installation settings:

Edit the PHP configuration file used by Apache, not only the command-line PHP configuration. You can locate the loaded web configuration with a temporary, protected PHP information page, then remove that page immediately after checking it. Restart Apache and verify the effective values through the Joomla pre-installation check.
How do I create a least-privilege Joomla database?
Create a database and a separate application user, record the database name, username, password, and host, and give that user rights only on the Joomla database. Do not use the database administrator account in the web installer.

After opening the database client with an administrative account, adapt the names and use a long, unique password:

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
The exact authentication defaults can differ between database releases. If Apache and the database run on separate hosts, use a narrowly scoped host or private network address instead of opening the account to every source. Store the credentials in your password manager and do not place them in public web files.
PostgreSQL alternative
Create a dedicated PostgreSQL database and role, grant ownership or the minimum privileges required by Joomla’s installer, and select the PostgreSQL driver in the PHP packages. Use the same discipline: a unique role, a strong password, restricted network access, and tested backups.
How do I prepare Apache and place the Joomla files?
Choose a document root for the site, configure an Apache virtual host for the final hostname, and unpack the official Joomla installation archive there. The hostname used in Apache, the browser installer, the certificate, and Cloudflare must match.
- Create the document-root directory, for example
/var/www/example-site, and make sure Apache can read the application files. - Download the official Joomla installation archive on the server or transfer it through a secure administrative channel. Unpack it directly into the intended document root; do not leave the archive, a temporary extraction directory, or diagnostic files publicly accessible.
- Set ownership and permissions so Apache can write only to directories Joomla documents as writable. Avoid recursive world-writable permissions such as
chmod -R 777. - Define an Apache site with the intended
ServerNameandDocumentRoot. Enable the site and, if needed,mod_rewritefor SEO URLs, then reload Apache after validating its configuration.
What should the virtual host contain?
Adapt the following skeleton to your Ubuntu paths and certificate files; it is a layout guide, not a release-tested certificate recipe:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example-site
DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
<Directory /var/www/example-site>
AllowOverride All
Require all granted
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>
For HTTPS, create a separate *:443 virtual host with the same hostname and document root, enable SSL, and reference the certificate and private-key files issued for that hostname. Keep the private key readable only by the services that need it. Validate the configuration with sudo apache2ctl configtest before reloading.
How do I run the Joomla browser installer?
Open the site hostname in a browser after Apache serves the extracted files. The installer collects site, administrator, and database details, then writes Joomla’s configuration.

- Browse to the hostname over HTTP during the initial setup only if HTTPS is not ready yet; use the final HTTPS hostname as soon as the origin certificate is working.
- Enter a descriptive site name and the requested site metadata.
- Create an administrator account with a non-default username and a strong, unique password. Never use a predictable name such as “admin” when the installer allows a different value.
- Choose the database type and enter the database host, name, user, and password created earlier. For a local database, the host is commonly
localhost, but use the value that matches your database connection. - Review the pre-installation checks. Correct missing PHP modules, insufficient memory, upload limits, or database-driver errors before continuing.
- Complete the installation and follow the installer’s instruction to remove or secure installation artifacts. Confirm that the administrator login works before exposing the site publicly.
How do I secure the Apache origin before enabling Cloudflare?
Install a certificate on Apache and make the origin answer HTTPS on port 443 before selecting Cloudflare Full (strict). Cloudflare’s edge certificate alone is not enough: strict mode validates the certificate presented by your origin.
Which certificate can I use?
Use an unexpired certificate from a public certificate authority whose name matches the requested hostname, or use a Cloudflare Origin CA certificate for Cloudflare-to-origin encryption. An Origin CA certificate is not intended for direct browser trust if Cloudflare is paused or the DNS record is changed to DNS-only; use a public certificate if direct browser-to-origin access must work.
How do I avoid redirect loops and mixed content?
- Make Apache serve the hostname on port 443 and ensure the firewall permits that port.
- Set Joomla’s canonical site URL and administrator URL consistently with HTTPS after the origin is ready.
- Update templates, images, scripts, and extension URLs that still use HTTP.
- Do not combine an origin-wide HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect with a Cloudflare Flexible mode configuration; that combination can make each side redirect the other.
Test the origin certificate directly using the hostname and an administrative network path before changing Cloudflare to strict validation. Confirm the certificate name, expiry, chain, and Apache virtual-host selection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do I put the Joomla site behind Cloudflare?
Add the site’s DNS records to Cloudflare, proxy only the records that serve web traffic, and select Full (strict) after the origin certificate passes direct testing.
Which DNS records should be proxied?
| Record purpose | Recommended status | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Web A, AAAA, or CNAME record for the Joomla hostname | Proxied | Requests pass through Cloudflare’s HTTP proxy and its associated protections. |
| Email records and mail hostnames | Use the status required by the mail service, normally DNS-only | Mail protocols are not automatically made compatible with the web proxy. |
| Domain-verification or other non-web records | Follow the service’s instructions | These records have purposes unrelated to HTTP proxying. |
| Web record intentionally exposing the origin | DNS-only | Returns the origin address directly and bypasses Cloudflare’s HTTP proxy. |
Proxy the A, AAAA, or CNAME records that actually serve the site. Do not blindly proxy every record in the zone: mail and verification records may break when routed through an HTTP proxy.
Which Cloudflare SSL/TLS mode should I select?
Select Full (strict) when Apache presents a valid, unexpired certificate matching the hostname. Less strict modes can hide an origin configuration problem and should not be the permanent solution for a public Joomla site.

A certificate mismatch, an expired certificate, an unreachable port 443, or an incomplete origin TLS configuration can produce Cloudflare error 526. If Cloudflare reports a redirect loop, inspect both the Cloudflare mode and Apache/Joomla HTTPS redirects. If browsers report mixed content, find and replace remaining HTTP asset URLs.
How do I preserve the real visitor IP behind Cloudflare?
Configure Apache and any security software to restore the client address from Cloudflare’s headers only when the request came from a trusted Cloudflare network. Proxied requests arrive at Apache from Cloudflare IP addresses, not directly from the visitor.
Which headers contain the original address?
Cloudflare supplies the original visitor address in headers including CF-Connecting-IP and X-Forwarded-For. Those headers are useful for logs, Joomla access controls, geolocation, and rate limits only after the origin verifies that the sender is a trusted Cloudflare proxy.
What is the safe configuration approach?
- Use Apache’s trusted-proxy or real-IP mechanism to replace the apparent client address only for requests arriving from Cloudflare’s published IP ranges.
- Keep those ranges current when Cloudflare changes them; automate review if your firewall or rate limiting depends on them.
- Reject or ignore forwarded-IP headers from direct, untrusted connections. A visitor can forge such headers when reaching the origin directly.
- Restrict direct origin access at the firewall where practical, while retaining an administrative path for maintenance and emergency bypass.
- Inspect access logs after enabling the setting. The recorded client address should be the visitor’s address for proxied requests, while direct administrative traffic should remain distinguishable.
Do not copy a generic Apache real-IP snippet without matching its trusted-proxy list to your deployment. Trusting every value in X-Forwarded-For can make IP-based security controls worse than having no restoration at all.
What should I test before announcing the site?
Test the complete path from browser to Cloudflare to Apache to Joomla, then test the failure cases that indicate a broken TLS or proxy assumption.

Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Joomla pre-installation check rejects PHP | PHP is below 8.3, a required module is absent, or the web SAPI uses a different configuration. | Install a supported runtime and extensions, edit the Apache-loaded PHP configuration, restart Apache, and recheck. |
| Database connection fails | Wrong host, database name, credentials, driver, or database permissions. | Test the credentials with the database client, verify the selected PHP driver, and grant access only to the Joomla database. |
| Cloudflare error 526 | Origin certificate is expired, mismatched, untrusted for the selected mode, or Apache is not serving port 443. | Fix the Apache certificate and HTTPS listener, test the origin directly, then retain Full (strict). |
| Endless HTTP/HTTPS redirects | Cloudflare mode and origin redirect policy disagree. | Use Full (strict), make Joomla and Apache consistently HTTPS-aware, and remove conflicting Flexible-mode assumptions. |
| Logs show Cloudflare addresses only | Trusted visitor-IP restoration is not configured. | Configure restoration for Cloudflare ranges only and verify the resulting logs. |
| Real visitor IPs can be spoofed | The origin trusts forwarded headers from arbitrary clients or the origin is directly reachable. | Restrict trust to Cloudflare source ranges and limit direct origin access with firewall rules. |
How should I maintain the installation after launch?
Keep Ubuntu, Apache, PHP, Joomla, extensions, and templates patched on a planned schedule. Test updates on a staging copy when an extension or template is business-critical, and take a database-plus-files backup before changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run Joomla on Ubuntu without Cloudflare?
Yes. Cloudflare is an optional proxy and DNS service, not a Joomla requirement. You still need Apache, a supported PHP/database stack, and a valid certificate on the origin if visitors connect directly.
Do I need a public certificate if Cloudflare is always enabled?
No, a Cloudflare Origin CA certificate can secure the Cloudflare-to-origin connection. Use a publicly trusted certificate instead when the origin may be accessed directly, when Cloudflare might be paused, or when another service connects without Cloudflare.
Why does Joomla work in the browser but fail when I upload an extension?
The effective Apache PHP settings may have lower upload or POST limits than the command-line PHP configuration. Check the web SAPI values for upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, and memory_limit, then restart Apache after changing them.
Should I expose port 80 after enabling HTTPS?
Keeping port 80 available is useful for an intentional HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect and for certificate-validation methods that require it. Do not serve Joomla content unsecured; redirect it consistently to the HTTPS virtual host.
How can I test a Cloudflare change without waiting for DNS caches?
Use a temporary hostname or a controlled local hosts-file entry that points the hostname to the intended endpoint, then test the certificate and redirect behavior. Remove the override afterward so normal DNS resolution resumes.
