JEDEC’s DDR5 SDRAM standard includes speed-bin and timing material up to DDR5-8800, or 8,800 million transfers per second. That is a rate defined in the component specification—not a promise that a particular computer, motherboard, or memory kit can run at it. The standard’s Rowhammer-related context should also be read as mitigation support, not proof that DDR5 systems are immune to Rowhammer attacks.

What the JEDEC DDR5 specification covers

JEDEC JESD79-5C defines DDR5 SDRAM features, functions, AC/DC characteristics, packages, and ball and signal assignments, along with requirements for specified device densities and organizations. It is a component standard; it does not certify every combination of processor, motherboard, firmware, and memory as compatible at every rate. The accessible standard copy is mirrored by StudyLib rather than hosted on JEDEC’s public site. Read the JESD79-5C text.

What DDR5-8800 and 8800 MT/s mean

The JESD79-5C contents include DDR5-8800 speed-bin and timing material. MT/s means million transfers per second, so 8800 MT/s is 8,800 million transfers per second. The figure describes a specified rate in the document; it is not a benchmark result, a measured improvement over another memory speed, or evidence that 8800 MT/s products are broadly available. The April 2024 standard text and its July 2024 editorial revision include this high-end speed-bin material.

Does the specification mean your computer can use 8800 MT/s RAM?

No—not by itself. A component’s defined speed does not establish that a complete system supports that speed. Usable memory settings depend on the specific DIMM, CPU memory controller, motherboard, firmware, and memory configuration. The standard alone cannot confirm compatibility for an individual computer, and no model-specific 8800 MT/s platform support is established here.

  • On-Die ECC

Before choosing memory, check the CPU and motherboard makers’ documentation for supported memory rates and configurations, then confirm the DIMM’s specifications and the firmware options available on that system. A high rate listed in a standard should not be treated as a guaranteed operating setting.

What the Rowhammer reference does—and does not—establish

Rowhammer is a memory disturbance risk associated with repeated activation of memory rows. Technical references to PRAC (Per-Row Activation Counting) and RFM (Refresh Management) place these mechanisms in the context of DDR5 Rowhammer mitigation. However, the available source passages do not establish the detailed JEDEC requirements, how consistently products implement the mechanisms, or their efficacy across systems. The headline’s anti-Rowhammer framing should therefore be understood as mitigation-oriented support, not a claim that the standard eliminates Rowhammer risk or guarantees protection in every DDR5 product. Hackaday’s coverage connects the update with Rowhammer mitigation, but does not by itself establish universal product behavior.

Which revision is the update?

The April 2024 document identifies itself as JESD79-5C_v1.30. A July 2024 copy is identified as JESD79-5C.01_v1.31 and describes itself as an editorial revision of v1.30. That revision history is not evidence, on its own, of a new technical feature release in July. JEDEC’s public homepage describes the organization’s standards work and lists DDR SDRAM among its focus areas, but does not verify the specific changes in these 2024 documents. JEDEC’s website.
