Use the BroadcastChannel API when browser tabs, windows, frames, or workers on the same origin need to exchange short-lived events without polling. Each context opens a channel with the same name, sends cloneable data with postMessage(), and handles incoming message events. The sending channel object does not receive its own event, so the tab that changes state must update itself directly and use BroadcastChannel to notify its peers.
The API is widely available in current browsers and in Web Workers, but it is not a durable queue, an authentication system, or a cross-origin transport. A robust implementation adds a small versioned message protocol, validates every payload, closes channels during teardown, and chooses a fallback when storage partitioning or older browser support prevents delivery.
What is the BroadcastChannel API, and why is it useful for tab sync?
BroadcastChannel is a named, many-to-many message bus for browsing contexts that can share the relevant origin and storage partition. A page, tab, popup, iframe, or worker joins a topic by constructing a BroadcastChannel with a shared string name. Any member can publish an event, and every other member listening on that name can receive it.

This is useful for transient coordination such as telling open tabs that a user logged out, invalidating a cached record after an update, coordinating which tab performs a periodic job, or propagating a draft revision. It avoids timer-based polling and does not require a server round trip for each notification.

BroadcastChannel is deliberately low level. The browser does not define event names, versions, acknowledgement rules, conflict resolution, retries, or authentication. MDN describes the protocol as undefined by the specification: each browsing context must implement its own messaging rules, with no negotiation requirement. Treat the channel as transport; your application still needs a protocol and an authoritative source of state.
How does BroadcastChannel deliver a message?
Every participating context creates a channel with exactly the same name. Calling postMessage() sends one structured-cloneable value to listening channel objects in the other participating contexts. The object that called postMessage() is excluded from delivery, so there is no automatic echo.
Joining the same topic
Channel names are case-sensitive strings. A name such as app-sync is independent from App-Sync. Keep names specific to your application and environment; adding an environment prefix can prevent a development tab from receiving production-style events when both are open under the same origin.
const channel = new BroadcastChannel("app-sync");
Receiving and sending
Use either the onmessage property or an event listener. The event’s data property contains the cloned payload. A sender should update its own UI or state first, then publish an event for peers rather than waiting for an echo.
channel.addEventListener("message", ({ data }) => {
console.log("received", data);
});
channel.postMessage({
type: "settings-invalidated",
version: 1,
key: "dashboard-layout"
});
Which contexts can participate?
Windows, tabs, same-origin frames, iframes, and Web Workers can use the API. Same origin is necessary but not always sufficient: browsers can place same-origin documents in different storage partitions when their top-level sites differ. An embedded document may therefore be unable to communicate with a top-level page even when their origins appear identical. Test the exact embedding and navigation arrangement used by your application.
How do I build a reliable tab-sync channel?
Start with a small protocol and a single channel instance per page or worker. The following sequence keeps local state authoritative, rejects unknown messages, and cleans up resources.
- Choose a scoped channel name. Include an application and environment component, such as
acme-dashboard-prod-v1, so unrelated features do not share a bus accidentally. - Define a message envelope. Include a stable
type, an integerversion, and only the fields needed by that event. A timestamp, tab identifier, resource key, or revision number can support ordering and conflict decisions. - Create the channel during setup. Keep the object in the component, page, or worker that owns the subscription. Do not create a new channel for every event.
- Update local state, then publish. The initiating tab must apply its change itself because it will not receive its own broadcast.
- Validate incoming data. Check that the value is an object, that its type and version are known, and that required fields have acceptable types and ranges.
- Handle deserialization errors. Register
messageerrorand log enough context to diagnose an incompatible or non-cloneable payload. - Close on teardown. Call
close()when a page-owned module, component, or worker is disposed.
A complete authentication-state example
const authChannel = new BroadcastChannel("acme-auth-prod-v1");
function publishAuthState(loggedIn) {
// Update this tab immediately; the sender receives no message event.
updateLocalAuthView(loggedIn);
authChannel.postMessage({
type: "auth-state",
version: 1,
loggedIn,
emittedAt: Date.now()
});
}
authChannel.addEventListener("message", ({ data }) => {
if (!data || data.type !== "auth-state" || data.version !== 1) {
return;
}
if (typeof data.loggedIn !== "boolean") {
return;
}
updateLocalAuthView(data.loggedIn);
});
authChannel.addEventListener("messageerror", (event) => {
console.error("BroadcastChannel payload could not be deserialized", event);
});
window.addEventListener("pagehide", () => {
authChannel.close();
});
The broadcast here is a notification that another context changed authentication state. It is not proof that a user is authenticated. Each tab should continue to rely on the server session or another authoritative mechanism when it needs to authorize a request.

What should a BroadcastChannel message protocol contain?
Because the API supplies no negotiation or semantics, define the rules your feature needs before adding listeners. A compact envelope makes future changes safer and prevents unrelated data from being interpreted as a command.
Use types and versions
Use names such as login, logout, session-refresh, cache-invalidate, or draft-update. Keep a numeric or string version in every envelope. A newer tab can ignore an unknown version instead of guessing how to interpret it; during a migration, support both versions temporarily if necessary.
Add ordering information only when the feature needs it
Date.now() can help with diagnostics, but a timestamp alone is not a conflict-resolution algorithm because clocks can differ. For drafts or replicated settings, include a monotonically increasing revision generated by the authoritative writer, or combine a revision with a generated tab ID and deterministic tie-break rule.
Keep events declarative
Send an intent or an invalidation key rather than a complete private data model when peers can refetch the current value. For example, a cache event can contain a resource name and revision; each tab then decides whether to fetch. This reduces stale data and avoids coupling every tab to the same object shape.

Broadcast authentication transitions as notifications while retaining server-side authority. On a logout event, tabs can clear in-memory credentials, hide protected views, and redirect to a sign-in route; they should still handle an expired server session independently.
Logout
Publish a logout or auth-state event immediately after the initiating tab clears its local session representation. Receiving tabs should invalidate local user data and cancel requests that must no longer run under the old session.
Login and refresh
A login event can prompt another tab to reload profile data. A session-refresh event can tell peers that cached claims may be stale, but it should not contain bearer credentials. Let each tab obtain fresh authorization data through the normal secure session path.

How do I invalidate caches or synchronize settings?
Send the smallest information that lets a peer make a decision: a cache key, resource name, or revision. The receiving tab can remove a local entry, mark it stale, and refetch when that data is next needed.
const dataChannel = new BroadcastChannel("acme-data-prod-v1");
function invalidateProject(projectId, revision) {
dataChannel.postMessage({
type: "project-invalidated",
version: 1,
projectId,
revision
});
}
dataChannel.addEventListener("message", ({ data }) => {
if (data?.type !== "project-invalidated" || data.version !== 1) return;
if (typeof data.projectId !== "string") return;
markProjectStale(data.projectId, data.revision);
});
If the event is missed because a tab was closed or suspended, the tab must still discover staleness through its normal fetch, cache-expiration, or application-state checks. BroadcastChannel does not replay history.
Can BroadcastChannel coordinate a leader or active tab?
Yes, but election is an application protocol rather than a built-in feature. Include a generated tab ID, heartbeat or lease metadata, and an expiration rule. When two tabs claim leadership at once, resolve the conflict deterministically, for example by comparing tab IDs, and make every participant capable of taking over after the lease expires.
A channel message cannot guarantee that a tab is alive forever. Background throttling, suspended pages, crashes, and abrupt process termination can stop heartbeats without a final “I am leaving” event. Use short-lived leases and make the protected operation safe to repeat.
How should I synchronize drafts or UI state?
Broadcast user intent or a revision rather than blindly replacing the entire document. Each tab can reject an incoming revision that is older than its current one, or surface a conflict when both tabs edited the same base revision.
For ephemeral UI coordination—such as selecting the same record in two windows—last-write-wins may be acceptable. For durable drafts, persist the authoritative version elsewhere and use the channel only to reduce delay between tabs.
What data can postMessage() carry?
postMessage() uses the structured clone algorithm. Plain objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and many built-in cloneable values can be transferred by value. The receiver gets a clone, not a shared JavaScript object, so mutating its copy does not mutate the sender’s object.

Do not send functions, DOM nodes, closures, or other values that structured cloning cannot represent. Keep payloads small and explicit; a channel is intended for coordination events, not bulk data transfer. If a value cannot be cloned, posting can fail with a DataCloneError.
Errors to handle
DataCloneError: the value supplied topostMessage()is not serializable by structured cloning.InvalidStateError: code attempted to post after callingclose()on that channel object.messageerror: a receiving channel could not deserialize an incoming message. Log the event and include protocol version information in diagnostics.
Wrap publishing at boundaries where a bad payload should not break the feature, and test serialization with representative production data rather than assuming that every object is cloneable.

What are BroadcastChannel’s lifecycle and delivery limits?
Messages are transient. There is no built-in queue for a tab that opens later, no durable history, acknowledgement, retry, or delivery receipt. A browser may also suspend or terminate a background context, so a sender cannot treat a successful postMessage() call as proof that every peer processed the event.
Calling close() disconnects that channel object and permits eventual garbage collection. In a single-page application, close the channel when the owning feature is unmounted; in a worker, close it during shutdown. Avoid leaking one channel per route change or per component render.
What is the difference between BroadcastChannel and other tab-sync choices?
The right transport depends on scope, durability, and whether a shared authority is required. This table summarizes the practical trade-offs.
| Mechanism | Scope and workers | Delivery and durability | When it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BroadcastChannel | Same-origin contexts that share the relevant storage partition; available to windows and workers. | Transient messages; no built-in history, acknowledgement, retry, or replay. | Low-latency peer notifications such as logout, cache invalidation, and UI coordination. | Application must define protocol, conflict policy, and recovery for missed events. |
storage events |
Typically coordinates documents through shared web storage; worker participation is not its primary model. | Storage values persist, while the event is a notification; behavior and payload design are tied to storage writes. | Small compatibility fallback when a shared storage area is already part of the design. | Requires storage mutation and careful cleanup of old keys; it is not a general message bus. |
| Service Worker messaging | Coordinates controlled pages through a service worker and can cover broader page lifecycles. | More moving parts; persistence and retries still require explicit application design. | Applications already using a service worker for caching, offline work, or centralized coordination. | Heavier lifecycle, registration, control, and update complexity. |
| SharedWorker | Multiple same-origin pages can connect to one worker when the browser supports and permits it. | State can live in the worker while it remains active; durability is not automatic. | Centralized in-browser coordination requiring a long-lived shared worker process. | More setup and lifecycle complexity than a simple broadcast. |
| Server-sent events or WebSockets | Can coordinate clients across tabs, devices, and origins through a server authority. | Server-managed delivery can support authentication, replay, acknowledgements, and retries when implemented. | Cross-device state, authoritative fan-out, or workflows that cannot rely on tabs being open together. | Needs a server connection, authentication, operational cost, and reconnect handling. |
Use BroadcastChannel for local peer notification and pair it with persistent application state when a late-joining tab must catch up. Move to a server channel when events must cross devices, origins, or browser sessions, or when delivery guarantees are part of the requirement.
Is BroadcastChannel supported in current browsers?
MDN currently labels BroadcastChannel “Baseline Widely available” and reports availability across browsers since March 2022. It is also exposed in Web Workers. That status covers mainstream current engines, not every embedded browser, managed WebView, or legacy environment.

Keep a support decision in your compatibility matrix. Feature-detect before constructing a channel and select a fallback for environments where it is absent or where storage partitioning prevents the contexts you need to connect.
const canBroadcast = typeof window !== "undefined" &&
typeof window.BroadcastChannel === "function";
if (canBroadcast) {
// Use the channel-based implementation.
} else {
// Use a deliberately scoped fallback, such as a storage notification
// or a server-backed refresh, depending on the feature's guarantees.
}
How do I troubleshoot a channel that is not syncing?
Check the failure in this order so that environmental problems are separated from protocol bugs.
- Verify the exact channel name. Compare spelling, case, environment suffixes, and whether one context is using an old bundle.
- Confirm origin and partition. Check scheme, host, and port. If one page is embedded under a different top-level site, storage partitioning may isolate it despite a matching origin.
- Prove the listener is attached. Register the listener before publishing and log the validated envelope, not only the raw event object.
- Check the sender assumption. The sending channel object will not receive its own message. Test with a second tab or window.
- Inspect serialization. Replace the payload with a plain object and then add fields back until a
DataCloneErrorormessageerrorappears. - Look for premature teardown. A route change or component cleanup may have called
close()before the event was sent. - Test missed-event recovery. Close one tab, publish an invalidation, and reopen it. If the new tab must see the change, add a persistent state check or refetch path; the channel alone cannot replay it.
What security rules should surround tab broadcasts?
Any script running in a participating origin can create the channel and send messages, so do not treat an event as a trust boundary. Never broadcast access tokens, passwords, or other secrets. Validate types and ranges, ignore unknown versions, and keep authorization decisions on the server or in the established session mechanism.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For multi-tenant applications, scope channel names and payload identifiers so that one feature cannot accidentally cause another tenant’s UI to refresh. Content Security Policy, origin isolation, and standard session protections remain necessary; BroadcastChannel does not replace them.
What should I test before shipping?
- Two tabs on the same origin receive login, logout, and invalidation events.
- The initiating tab updates correctly without relying on an echo.
- Unknown message types and future versions are ignored safely.
- Malformed fields do not crash the listener.
- Non-cloneable payloads produce a controlled error.
- Closing a component or worker stops further handling and does not leak channel objects.
- A suspended, crashed, or late-opening tab recovers from authoritative state rather than assuming it saw every event.
- Embedded and cross-top-level-site deployments are tested for storage-partition behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a newly opened tab receive broadcasts sent before it loaded?
No. BroadcastChannel does not provide durable history or replay. A new tab must read the current session, cache, or server state through your normal initialization path, then subscribe for future events.
Should I broadcast the full user session object?
No. Broadcast only a non-secret event such as a login or logout notice, and let each tab obtain current claims through its existing secure session flow. This limits exposure and avoids propagating stale authorization data.
Why does my same-origin iframe miss messages?
Same origin is required, but browsers can apply storage partitioning based on the iframe’s top-level site. An iframe embedded under a different top-level site may therefore be isolated from a top-level page even when their origins match.
How can I prevent two tabs from overwriting each other’s drafts?
Include revision information and a deterministic conflict rule in the message protocol. Reject older revisions or surface a merge decision, and persist the authoritative draft so recovery does not depend on every transient event arriving.
