Lenovo offered the 12-core Threadripper PRO 3945WX in the ThinkStation P620, and Lenovo’s CPU-upgrade guide says that fusing a Threadripper PRO CPU is a one-time, irreversible operation that binds it to Lenovo-signed firmware. The model number alone does not reveal whether a used 3945WX has been fused.
What “locked to Lenovo” means
Platform Secure Boot (PSB) uses a processor fuse to bind the CPU to an OEM’s firmware code-signing key. AMD describes the general mechanism as binding a processor to the OEM firmware key: AMD’s description of OEM-enabled AMD Secure Boot.
For the ThinkStation P620, Lenovo says the CPU-fusing operation is one-time programmable and cannot be reversed. Its upgrade guide states: “From that point on, the fused processor will only function on motherboards using Lenovo’s code signing key.” See Lenovo’s ThinkStation P620 CPU-upgrade guide.
In practical terms, a 3945WX fused with Lenovo’s key is not a drop-in CPU for an arbitrary motherboard. It can work only with a motherboard that uses the matching Lenovo signing key. The cited sources do not establish that every Lenovo workstation family uses an interchangeable key.

Does every Threadripper PRO 3945WX have the Lenovo lock?
No. Lenovo lists the 3945WX among the P620’s available processor options, confirming it was an official configuration; that does not show that every 3945WX was fused. Lenovo’s platform reference is its ThinkStation P620 specifications.
The fuse state depends on the history of the particular CPU, not simply its model name. The cited sources provide no public model- or serial-number lookup that reveals whether an individual used 3945WX has been fused.

What to check before buying or transplanting one
- Ask about the CPU’s history. Ask the seller whether this exact processor was installed and fused in a Lenovo P620 or another Lenovo system, and request documentation if available. A general claim that it is a 3945WX does not establish its fuse state.
- Confirm the receiving motherboard’s key support. Ask the board manufacturer whether the specific board uses the signing key required by the processor. Do not assume that a Lenovo motherboard from another workstation family will match.
- Get compatibility confirmation before paying or installing. If the seller cannot verify the CPU’s fusing history, or the manufacturer cannot confirm the target board’s key support, treat cross-platform compatibility as unverified. Fusing is irreversible, so do not proceed on the assumption that the CPU can later be moved to another platform.
3945WX specifications and P620 context
Lenovo’s P620 reference, last modified in 2023, lists the 3945WX as a supported option with 12 cores and 24 threads, a 4.0 GHz base clock and up to 4.3 GHz maximum clock, 6 MB of L2 cache, 64 MB of L3 cache, DDR4-3200 memory support, and Socket SP3. AMD’s 2020 P620 announcement also gives 12 cores, 24 threads, 4.0 GHz base and up to 4.3 GHz boost, plus 280 W TDP and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes: AMD’s P620 announcement. These figures describe the processor and its announced platform context; they do not identify the fuse state of a particular chip.
