Short answer: the available evidence does not prove that The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch is a scripted hoax, but it also does not independently verify the show’s strongest claims about portals, extraterrestrial technology, paranormal entities, or harmful “energy.” The fairest conclusion is that the series documents a real investigation using real equipment while presenting interpretations that remain unproven.

The distinction matters. A thermal camera can record a temperature difference, and ground-penetrating radar can detect a subsurface anomaly. Neither instrument, by itself, proves that the cause is supernatural or interdimensional.

What is The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch?

The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch is a History reality-TV series about investigations at a privately owned property in northeastern Utah. It premiered on March 31, 2020—not 2018, as some online summaries incorrectly state—and has seven seasons as of 2026. The ranch’s official website currently advertises Season 7 as airing, with a Tuesday broadcast slot at 9/8c and more than 90 episodes available to stream.

The current owner’s website describes the property as a 512-acre secure research site. Other descriptions often round that figure to 500 acres. Before the television series, the property was associated with private investigations. The ranch says Robert Bigelow acquired it in 1996 and supported work by the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS). Brandon Fugal is identified as the owner who acquired the property in 2016.

The program follows a research team using equipment such as ground-penetrating radar, radiation detectors, lasers, cameras, drones and thermal imaging. Those are legitimate technologies. The controversy is not primarily whether the devices exist; it is whether the observations shown on television justify the conclusions drawn from them.

What does the show claim?

History’s descriptions refer to unidentified aerial phenomena, possible interdimensional portals and a dome-shaped object or structure believed to be buried underground. The wording is important: these are subjects being investigated, not established findings.

A program may show an unexplained light, an unusual electromagnetic reading or a radar reflection. “Unexplained” means that the team has not yet identified the cause. It does not mean the cause has been demonstrated to be extraterrestrial, paranormal or interdimensional.

Claim or observation What the public evidence supports What it does not establish
Unusual aerial lights or objects An observation may be recorded and investigated. That the object is alien, intelligently controlled or connected to the ranch.
Ground-penetrating radar anomaly Radar can identify a feature that warrants further examination. That the feature is a buried dome, portal or artificial structure.
Radiation or electromagnetic readings An instrument may detect a measurable signal. That the signal is paranormal or responsible for health effects.
Reports of illness after visiting the ranch People may report symptoms or medical problems. A causal phenomenon known as the “Hitchhiker Effect.”

Does the Pentagon connection prove anything?

No. The Pentagon connection is real as a reported research relationship, but it is routinely overstated.

The ranch’s official account says a classified Pentagon contract was awarded in 2008 to Robert Bigelow’s aerospace company to study unexplained aerial phenomena. That establishes that government-linked funding was reportedly used to investigate UAP-related subjects. It does not establish that the government found a portal, extraterrestrial craft, supernatural activity or a physical anomaly at Skinwalker Ranch.

Governments investigate unusual reports for many reasons, including aviation safety, intelligence and defense. Commissioning research is not the same as confirming the explanation being investigated.

What is the “Hitchhiker Effect”?

The “Hitchhiker Effect” is a term used in accounts associated with the ranch to describe alleged experiences that supposedly follow people away from the property. A published account by Colm Kelleher, a member of the Skinwalker Ranch research team, describes reports ranging from unusual sightings to neurological injuries and chronic blood disease.

That account is evidence that members of the research community reported these experiences. It is not a publicly accessible controlled medical or physical study establishing that visiting the ranch causes them. There is also no established scientific phenomenon with this name comparable to a recognized medical diagnosis or a reproducible physical effect.

To demonstrate causation, researchers would need more than a collection of stories. They would need clear records of who was exposed, what happened, when it happened, what alternative explanations were excluded and whether independent teams could reproduce the effect under controlled conditions.

Are the show’s experiments scientific?

The equipment and some experimental methods are scientific or engineering-based. The evidentiary standard is a separate question.

For example, a ground-penetrating radar system sends electromagnetic pulses into the ground and records reflected signals. The result depends on soil composition, moisture, calibration, antenna frequency, processing and the geometry of the buried feature. A radar image can suggest an anomaly, but interpreting that anomaly requires excavation, independent scans or other corroborating evidence.

Similarly, drone thermography measures infrared radiation. A bright or cold area on a thermal image could result from temperature, reflected radiation, airflow, surface materials, camera angle or equipment limitations. It is not automatically evidence of an invisible object or energy field.

A stronger investigation would normally include:

  1. Predefined hypotheses and measurable success criteria.
  2. Instrument calibration and complete raw data.
  3. Environmental controls and ordinary comparison sites.
  4. Repeated tests conducted without changing the procedure after each surprising result.
  5. Independent observers or investigators who are not part of the television production.
  6. Publication of methods and results so other researchers can attempt replication.

Television episodes typically show selected events rather than a complete research log. That does not prove the events were fabricated, but it makes it difficult for viewers to assess selection effects, omitted negative results and the exact context of a measurement.

Is the show edited?

Yes. The ranch’s official website itself states: “The show is edited. The investigation isn’t.” That is a marketing statement from the ranch’s current operator, not independent verification of the program’s conclusions.

Editing is normal for reality television. Producers select footage, arrange scenes, add narration and decide where an episode ends. A dramatic sequence may therefore be genuine footage presented without all the surrounding tests, failed attempts or mundane explanations.

Editing alone is not evidence of a hoax. It is evidence that the broadcast is not a continuous, independently auditable laboratory record.

What do critics and experts say?

The strongest criticism in the available record concerns evidence quality. Science writer Russell Moul has criticized the program for failing to provide evidence that supports its claims. Jason Colavito has argued that the modern Skinwalker Ranch mythology is largely a late-twentieth-century creation. These are skeptical interpretations, not proof that every event shown was staged.

A 2023 article by Barry Greenwood challenged the documentary record behind claims concerning a reported $22 million research program led by James Lacatski. That criticism appeared in the Journal of Scientific Exploration, a publication devoted to unconventional subjects including UFOs, parapsychology and cryptozoology. It should be represented accurately: it is a criticism published in a fringe-oriented venue, not a mainstream scientific consensus that the television series is fake.

There is also no reliable basis for repeating unattributed quotations from supposed experts identified in some online articles as “Dr. John Alexander,” “Dr. Lisa Williams” or “Dr. Mark Roberts.” Those quotations are insufficiently sourced and should not be treated as verified expert testimony.

What can reasonably be concluded?

The public record supports a narrower conclusion than either side often claims:

  • The ranch is a real private property, and the program uses genuine scientific and technical instruments.
  • Private and government-linked investigations into unexplained reports have taken place.
  • Team members have reported unusual observations and alleged after-effects.
  • The show’s claims about portals, extraterrestrial objects and paranormal forces have not been independently established.
  • Available criticism focuses on anecdotal evidence, incomplete documentation, interpretation and lack of independent replication.
  • There is no substantiated evidence that scientists have proven every televised event was deliberately fabricated.

In other words, “unverified” is the accurate label. Calling the series a confirmed hoax goes beyond the evidence, while treating the show as proof of paranormal or extraterrestrial activity does the same.

How to assess an episode yourself

  1. Separate the measurement from the interpretation. Ask what the device actually recorded before accepting what the presenter says it means.
  2. Look for raw numbers and controls. A graph without a baseline, calibration details or comparison readings is difficult to evaluate.
  3. Check whether the result was repeated. One unusual reading can come from equipment error, interference or an ordinary environmental cause.
  4. Identify who made the claim. A ranch employee or television participant may have valuable experience, but that is not the same as independent confirmation.
  5. Watch for edited time lines. Dramatic cuts can make separate observations appear more closely connected than the underlying investigation shows.
  6. Distinguish government interest from government confirmation. A classified contract or UAP investigation does not validate a paranormal explanation.

FAQ

Is The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch definitely fake?

No. The available sources do not prove that producers fabricated every event. They do show that the program’s strongest paranormal, interdimensional and extraterrestrial interpretations have not been independently verified.

Did the show start in 2018?

No. The series premiered on History on March 31, 2020. Claims that the television program began in 2018 are incorrect.

Did the Pentagon confirm Skinwalker Ranch is paranormal?

No. The reported Pentagon-linked work involved investigating unexplained aerial phenomena. It did not establish that the ranch contains a portal, supernatural entities or extraterrestrial technology.

Are the instruments used on the ranch real?

Yes. The program has used technologies including ground-penetrating radar, thermal cameras, radiation detectors, lasers and drones. Real equipment does not guarantee that the team’s interpretation of a reading is correct.

What is the Hitchhiker Effect?

It is a term used by ranch-associated researchers for alleged unusual effects that supposedly follow people after leaving the property. It remains a reported claim, not an established medical or physical phenomenon supported by a controlled public study.

How many seasons does the show have?

The series has seven seasons as of 2026. The ranch’s official website currently lists Season 7 as airing.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch should be treated as edited reality television built around a real property, real instruments and reported anomalies—not as a scientific publication. The Pentagon connection and the use of technical equipment make the investigation worth examining, but neither proves the show’s paranormal conclusions. Until the key findings are documented in detail, independently tested and reproducible, the most defensible answer is: the show is not proven to be fake, but its extraordinary explanations remain unverified.
