The SanDisk Optimus GX 7100M is one of the fastest high-performance SSDs available in the compact M.2 2230 size, and it is a strong upgrade candidate for compatible handhelds and laptops. Its case is strongest if you need up to 2TB in a 30 mm drive and value speed and endurance; its high price and heat make it harder to justify for a device whose storage needs are modest. Check your device’s fit and service requirements before buying.
What does the Optimus GX 7100M offer?
This is a single-sided M.2 2230 drive: it measures 22 × 30 mm and uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface with NVMe 2.0. The compact size suits devices designed for 2230 storage, but it does not make the drive a universal replacement for longer M.2 SSDs.
Sandisk lists 1TB and 2TB versions, with the same headline speed ratings for both capacities. The company’s 2025 datasheet and product page specify up to 7,250 MB/s sequential reads, 6,900 MB/s sequential writes, 1 million random-read IOPS, and 1.3 million random-write IOPS. These are manufacturer ratings, not a promise that every host device or game will reach those speeds.

| Sequential write (Sandisk rating) | Up to 6,900 MB/s | Up to 6,900 MB/s |
| Random read (Sandisk rating) | Up to 1M IOPS | Up to 1M IOPS |

Sandisk’s design uses TLC 3D CBA NAND, Host Memory Buffer (HMB) rather than onboard DRAM, and nCache 4.0. HMB uses system memory for some drive-management work; it is not the same design as an SSD with its own DRAM. The available product information identifies these components but does not establish how their effect compares across every workload or host.

How fast is it in practice?
Reviewers found the GX 7100M an unusually strong PCIe 4.0 performer, especially in small random operations and sustained workloads. That makes its speed credentials more persuasive than a single sequential-read figure, although review results remain specific to the reviewers’ test systems.
Tom’s Hardware called it “as good as it gets for M.2 2230 with high performance and power efficiency,” while listing hot-running behavior as a con. PCWorld described it as the fastest PCIe 4.0 SSD it had tested and noted especially strong 4K results and no catastrophic slowdown during long writes. Jon L. Jacobi, a PCWorld contributor, summarized that review: “If you want the absolute best SSD performance for your handheld game machine, or for that matter, any PCIe 4.0 device, Sandisk’s new Optimus GX 7100M is it.” Those are review conclusions, not guarantees for every handheld, laptop, or workload.
For a handheld, the key buying question is not whether a benchmark number is impressive, but whether the device can use the drive’s capabilities and whether the improvement is worth the cost. A host’s interface, firmware, cooling, and workload all affect what the drive can deliver. The supplied review evidence does not establish a universal game-loading-time improvement or a particular increase in frame rate.

Is the GX 7100M worth its premium price?
It can be worth paying extra when you specifically need a fast, high-end 2230 drive, want substantial capacity, or place a high value on rated endurance. It is a weaker value if a cheaper drive already meets your device’s storage and performance needs.
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 review specification table listed prices of $229.99 for 1TB and $449.99 for 2TB. Its 2TB review coverage also reported $449.99 at Amazon at publication. These are dated review prices, not a current-price guarantee; availability and street prices can change. Dong Knows Tech rated the drive 8.3/10 in 2026 and described the Crucial P310 as much cheaper, but did not provide a comparable current price in the cited comparison.
| Drive and capacity | Rated endurance | Price information in cited coverage |
|---|---|---|
| GX 7100M 1TB | 600 TBW | $229.99 in Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 review specification table |
| GX 7100M 2TB | 1,200 TBW | $449.99 in Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 review specification table; also reported at Amazon at publication |
| Crucial P310 1TB | 220 TBW in Dong Knows Tech’s comparison | Exact price not stated; Dong Knows Tech described it as much cheaper |
| Crucial P310 2TB | 440 TBW in Dong Knows Tech’s comparison | Exact price not stated; Dong Knows Tech described it as much cheaper |
On endurance, the GX 7100M is rated for more total writes than the P310 at both compared capacities: 600 versus 220 TBW at 1TB, and 1,200 versus 440 TBW at 2TB, according to Dong Knows Tech’s table. That is a specification comparison, not evidence that ordinary game storage will use up either drive’s rated endurance. A higher TBW rating alone does not prove better value for every buyer.

Which capacity should you choose?
- Choose 1TB if your current storage is adequate for your library and the lower purchase price matters more than extra space.
- Choose 2TB if you are replacing a small internal drive and the extra capacity is valuable enough to justify the premium.
Both capacities have the same manufacturer-rated headline speeds, but the 2TB version doubles the stated endurance from 600 to 1,200 TBW. The available comparisons do not establish that one capacity will be faster than the other in every workload.

It is physically suited to a device with a compatible M.2 2230 slot, but the size label alone is not enough to confirm a safe upgrade. Sandisk lists Steam Deck, MSI Claw, Microsoft Surface, and Dell laptops with an M.2 2230 slot as compatible categories, and lists Windows 10 or later support. That does not verify every model, revision, firmware version, or service procedure within those categories.
Before ordering, check the device maker’s documentation for the exact model and confirm the drive-retainer or screw arrangement, firmware support, and clearance. A 2230 drive is shorter than a conventional 2280 SSD; it will not fit a 2280-only slot without an appropriate adapter or mounting solution. Dong Knows Tech notes that a 2280 adapter is not included.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Identify the exact device model. Do not rely only on a product-family name such as Surface or Dell; different models can have different storage layouts.
- Confirm the slot and supported size. Look for an M.2 2230 slot and verify that the device supports the drive’s interface and firmware requirements.
- Check the service instructions. Review how the device is opened, how the existing SSD is retained, and whether the replacement has enough clearance.
- Compare the replacement’s capacity with your needs. Decide between 1TB and 2TB based on the storage you actually need and the price difference at purchase time.
- Use the device maker’s installation and recovery guidance. Back up data and make sure you have a way to reinstall or restore the operating system before removing the original drive.
What are the main drawbacks?
- High cost: the cited 2026 review prices are premium prices, particularly for 2TB. Check the current offer rather than treating a review price as an ongoing sale.
- Heat: Tom’s Hardware listed hot-running behavior as a con. A compact handheld may have different cooling and airflow from a desktop review system, so do not assume desktop test conditions translate directly.
- Compatibility is model-specific: being 2230 does not guarantee that a particular device accepts the drive or has the required clearance and firmware support.
- No onboard DRAM: Sandisk uses HMB instead. The product specification identifies the design, but the evidence available here does not establish a universal performance penalty or advantage from it.
Who should buy the SanDisk Optimus GX 7100M?
Buy it if your device explicitly supports M.2 2230, you want 1TB or 2TB of internal storage, and the premium for high rated performance and endurance makes sense for your use. It is a particularly compelling option when you need the 2TB capacity in this compact form factor and can confirm the host is compatible.
Consider a less expensive alternative if you primarily need extra space and do not need top-tier performance, or if your device’s cooling and firmware support are uncertain. The GX 7100M’s strengths are real in the cited reviews, but they do not erase the practical importance of fit, price, and device-level behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do SSD upgrades make games run at a higher frame rate?
Usually, an SSD upgrade changes storage capacity and loading behavior rather than the graphics performance that determines frame rate. Any improvement depends on the game and system; the reviews cited here do not establish a general frame-rate gain for this drive.

Does a 7,250 MB/s rating mean a game will load in a fraction of a second?
No. That is Sandisk’s rated sequential-read maximum, not a game-loading time. Actual loading depends on the device, game data, software, and other system components.
Can I use the 1TB model for a long-term game library?
That depends on how many games you keep installed and their sizes, which vary. If you regularly remove games to make room, 1TB may be sufficient; if you want more installed at once, consider whether the 2TB price premium is worth the convenience.
