Verdict: The On Cloudsurfer 2 is a neutral road shoe best suited to short and mid-distance easy running. Its CloudTec Phase midsole and rocker create the smooth, rolling transition many reviewers noticed, but the ride is not universally plush: RTINGS found it firm, relatively unresponsive and lacking forefoot protection, while The Run Testers found it comfortable for easy efforts. It is a prior-generation model now that the Cloudsurfer 3 has reportedly launched, so the shoe makes the most sense when its current price is below the original launch price of US$160.

What is the On Cloudsurfer 2?

The Cloudsurfer 2 is On’s neutral everyday road trainer for short-to-mid-distance running. On’s SS25 technical sheet, dated February 13, 2025, lists that date as the shoe’s launch date and positions it for regular training rather than racing. The design centers on a CloudTec Phase midsole, a rocker-shaped geometry and an outsole revised with computer-optimized geometry.

On describes the shoe as a lightweight option with an engineered-mesh upper and refined tongue. Unlike several earlier On designs, the Cloudsurfer 2 does not use a Speedboard. That omission is important: the ride is intended to come from the foam, the shaped midsole and the rocker rather than from a separate stiff propulsion plate.

As of October 2026, the Cloudsurfer 2 is a previous-generation shoe. A Cloudsurfer 3 was reported as launching on September 15, 2026. Availability, colors, size runs and sale pricing therefore depend on remaining stock and the retailer you check.

The model sits in a fairly specific part of the running-shoe market. It is neither a maximal, highly cushioned long-run shoe nor a carbon-plated racer. It is meant to be the pair you can reach for on ordinary road miles when a guided transition matters more than an especially springy ride.

How does the CloudTec Phase construction work?

CloudTec Phase uses a sequence of hollow “cloud” elements in the midsole that compress as your foot rolls forward. Combined with the rocker, that arrangement is meant to reduce an abrupt transition from heel to toe. Reviewers broadly agree that the shoe rolls smoothly, even though they disagree about how soft or energetic it feels.

On’s product sheet says: “Cloudtec Phase is now paired with a new computer optimised outsole to fully support the smoothest ride, increasing durability and offer the ultimate cushioned running sensation.” That is the manufacturer’s promotional description, not an independent durability or cushioning test.

Midsole and rocker

The rocker is most noticeable at easy paces, when the shoe helps move the foot toward toe-off without demanding an aggressive push. The Run Testers described that motion as smooth and comfortable in their usual size. RTINGS, using its own test bench, reported a firm feel once the Cloud elements compressed, limited energy return and less forefoot protection when impact increased.

That combination can feel efficient to one runner and flat to another. A runner who dislikes sinking into soft foam may welcome the controlled platform, while someone who expects a trampoline-like response may find the transition more useful than the actual rebound. Neither reaction is a contradiction; they reflect different preferences and testing methods.

No Speedboard

There is no Speedboard in this model. Runners who prefer a flexible, unplated daily trainer may appreciate that simpler construction; runners looking for a pronounced snap during intervals or racing should not expect a plated-shoe sensation from the Cloudsurfer 2. The absence of a plate also means the shoe should be judged as a conventional trainer, not against the propulsion character of a race model.

Upper and outsole

The engineered-mesh upper is intended to keep the shoe light while the refined tongue manages the lace area. The outsole geometry was revised to support durability, according to On. Independent sources do not provide a controlled mileage test that establishes how long the rubber lasts, so the durability claim should be treated as a design intention rather than a guaranteed lifespan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grip deserves the same caution. The product sheet discusses optimized geometry and durability, but the reviewed pages do not establish a universal wet-road or trail-grip rating. Use it as a road shoe, and inspect the rubber periodically for unusual wear rather than assuming a particular mileage lifespan.

What are the Cloudsurfer 2’s specifications?

On’s figures are product-sheet specifications, while RTINGS and RunRepeat measured individual samples. Their numbers should not be merged into one definitive specification: size, measurement method and sample can change the result.

Specification On listed figure Independent measurement
Men’s weight 260 g in EU 42 RTINGS: 252.9 g for its tested sample
Women’s weight 230 g in EU 38.5
Heel stack 32 mm RTINGS: 35.8 mm
Toe stack 23 mm
Heel-to-toe drop 9 mm RTINGS: 8.6 mm; RunRepeat: 10.4 mm
Listed men’s sizes US 7–14
Listed women’s sizes US 5–11
Launch price US$160; €170; £150; CHF220

The differences are normal for shoe comparisons. On’s 9 mm number is a listed design specification; RTINGS and RunRepeat measured their own pairs using their own methods. A measured 8.6 mm or 10.4 mm result does not prove that one source is universally correct for every size.

RTINGS’ review page was updated October 24, 2025, and notes that its test bench was updated September 15, 2026. Because a methodology update can affect scores and measurements, treat its 252.9 g weight, 35.8 mm heel stack and 8.6 mm drop as results for that sample and framework. RunRepeat’s June 2025 review measured a 10.4 mm drop and specifically noted the difference from On’s listed figure. WearTesters’ February 2025 review and Doctors of Running also report launch-era specifications, but those figures are still not substitutes for a measurement of every size.

How does the Cloudsurfer 2 feel on the run?

The safest summary is “smooth but firm-leaning.” The rocker and CloudTec Phase geometry produce the transition On is targeting, while the cushioning itself does not receive a consistent soft or bouncy description from reviewers.

Easy pace

The Run Testers found the shoe comfortable for easy runs and said the rocker works particularly well at relaxed speeds. Believe in the Run also identified shorter daily training as the strongest use. That combination makes the Cloudsurfer 2 a reasonable option when your routine is mostly conversational-pace road mileage.

It may also work as a rotation shoe for runners who already own a softer or faster model. The Cloudsurfer 2 gives you a different, more controlled sensation for ordinary days, but there is no evidence that every runner will find it comfortable for every distance.

Responsiveness and protection

RTINGS’ review, updated October 24, 2025, found limited energy return and a firm sensation after compression. Its tested sample also offered reduced forefoot protection under higher impact. RTINGS says its test bench was updated September 15, 2026 and warns that methodology changes can create inconsistencies, so its scores and conclusions belong to that testing framework rather than representing a universal runner experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long runs, tempo work and racing

The available reviews consistently point toward shorter daily running rather than marathon racing. A firm, low-bounce ride may suit runners who dislike very soft foam, but the evidence does not support presenting this as a dedicated tempo or race shoe. If your priority is pronounced bounce, strong late-run forefoot protection or a highly cushioned long-run platform, compare alternatives before buying.

That does not mean a runner cannot take it farther. It means the shoe’s stated purpose and the strongest review consensus are easy, short-to-mid-distance sessions. Test it progressively before making it your only shoe for a long event, particularly if you are sensitive to forefoot impact.

Is the Cloudsurfer 2 comfortable for different foot shapes?

Most review comments describe a conventional fit, but the toe box may not feel roomy to every runner. The Run Testers were comfortable in their usual size while noting that some feet may want more space at the front.

Length and width

Start with your normal running-shoe size and check the retailer’s return policy. Leave roughly a thumb’s width in front of the longest toe, and make sure the upper does not press across the widest part of your forefoot. On’s sheet lists men’s US 7–14 and women’s US 5–11.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTINGS reported that a wide version was not listed for the model at the time of its review. That is a time-specific observation, not a promise about every later listing, so verify current width options before ordering. If you need extra forefoot volume, do not assume that sizing up will solve the problem; it can create heel movement while leaving the shoe’s shape unchanged.

Upper feel

The new engineered mesh and refined tongue are intended to balance lightness and hold. Because foot volume varies, try the shoe with the socks you normally run in and check both the toe area and the midfoot lace pressure. A secure heel with unrestricted toes is a better fit test than relying on the size printed on the box. Walk indoors, flex the forefoot and check for pressure points before exposing the outsole to the road if the seller permits returns.

How does it compare with the Cloudsurfer’s previous version?

Fleet Feet’s comparison characterizes the Cloudsurfer 2 as somewhat firmer and slightly heavier than the previous Cloudsurfer. Believe in the Run likewise describes a firmer feel than the preceding version. Those are reviewer impressions, not a standardized laboratory comparison, but they are useful if you expected the update to become softer.

The practical change is a more clearly guided transition: revised CloudTec Phase tuning, a rocker and updated outsole geometry. If you liked the earlier model for a softer sensation, try the Cloudsurfer 2 before assuming the new version will feel the same. Conversely, a runner who wanted more structure in the transition may prefer the newer tuning.

How does it compare with the Cloudmonster 2?

Tom’s Guide compared the two after running approximately 40 miles in each shoe. In that author’s experience, the Cloudsurfer 2 was smoother and lighter for easy running, while the Cloudmonster 2 felt more responsive and performed better on longer runs. This is one runner’s head-to-head report, not a controlled universal ranking.

What do the price and generation change for buyers?

On lists US$160 as the Cloudsurfer 2 launch price, alongside €170, £150 and CHF220. Those are launch-era figures from the February 13, 2025 technical sheet, not verified October 2026 prices. Retailers may discount a prior-generation shoe, but stock and size availability can change quickly.

Because the Cloudsurfer 3 was reported to launch on September 15, 2026, check whether a seller is offering the Cloudsurfer 2 as clearance stock and confirm that the listing identifies the correct generation. Compare the return policy, width options and final delivered price rather than relying on an old list price. The exact product name to search is “On Cloudsurfer 2 running shoe”; verify the retailer listing, inventory and size before checkout.

A lower price is meaningful only if the pair is new, returnable and available in your required size. Clearance colors can disappear without notice, and a low headline price may not include shipping or local taxes. No current price, stock level or affiliate eligibility is established here, so check those details directly with the seller.

Who should buy the Cloudsurfer 2?

The shoe is most defensible for runners who want a neutral road trainer with a guided rocker transition and a firmer, controlled feel for easy mileage. It can also suit someone who prefers a non-plated construction and does not need a wide toe box.

  • Choose it when most runs are short or medium-length and relaxed.
  • Choose it when a smooth heel-to-toe roll matters more than a springy, high-energy response.
  • Consider it when a current discount makes the prior-generation status worthwhile.
  • Consider it as one shoe in a rotation if you want a distinct firm-feeling option for ordinary road days.

Do not make it your first choice if you specifically want a plush long-run shoe, strong forefoot impact protection, pronounced bounce, or a race-focused platform. The available evidence also does not support any claim that this shoe prevents or treats injuries.

How should you buy and test a pair?

  1. Confirm the generation. Check that the product name says Cloudsurfer 2, not Cloudsurfer 3 or an older Cloudsurfer.
  2. Check current stock. Verify your exact size, width and color because prior-generation inventory can be uneven.
  3. Compare the delivered price. Treat US$160 as the launch reference, then check the live retailer price, shipping and return terms.
  4. Test fit indoors first. Wear your normal running socks, lace the shoe evenly and check toe clearance, heel security and forefoot pressure.
  5. Start with an easy run. The shoe’s intended use is easy daily running; do not judge it solely by a fast workout.
  6. Reassess the ride. Decide whether the firm cushioning and rocker suit you before committing to long runs or high-impact sessions.
  7. Inspect wear. Look at the outsole after several runs for uneven abrasion, especially if you train on rough pavement. No controlled mileage figure should be assumed.

What are the main strengths and limitations?

Strengths

  • Rockered geometry that reviewers generally describe as smooth during the transition.
  • Neutral, everyday-road positioning without a Speedboard.
  • Light listed weights for a daily trainer: 260 g for men’s EU 42 and 230 g for women’s EU 38.5.
  • Engineered-mesh upper and revised outsole geometry.
  • Potential value when prior-generation clearance pricing is substantially below launch price.

Limitations

  • Firmness and responsiveness are subjective; RTINGS found limited energy return while other reviewers found the shoe comfortable.
  • RTINGS reported limited forefoot protection under higher impact.
  • The toe box may feel narrow or insufficiently roomy for some feet.
  • Independent measurements differ from On’s listed drop, stack and weight figures.
  • It is now a prior-generation model, so current sizing and prices require a live check.
  • There is no controlled mileage or grip result establishing a universal lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Cloudsurfer 2 a stability shoe?

No. On positions it as a neutral trainer. Runners needing prescribed stability should choose footwear based on a professional assessment rather than assuming the rocker or Cloud elements provide correction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the Cloudsurfer 2 be used on a treadmill?

Its intended category is road running, and the available evidence does not include a dedicated treadmill test. A treadmill session can be a sensible low-risk way to assess fit and transition, but it does not establish how the outsole will perform on every indoor surface.

Why do shoe reviews report different stack heights and drops?

Brands publish design specifications, while laboratories measure individual shoes. Size, measuring points, compression and test method can all change the result, which is why On’s 9 mm drop, RTINGS’ 8.6 mm and RunRepeat’s 10.4 mm should remain separately attributed.

Should I buy Cloudsurfer 2 or wait for Cloudsurfer 3?

The Cloudsurfer 3 was reported as launched on September 15, 2026, so the decision depends on live pricing and stock. The Cloudsurfer 2 is more compelling when clearance savings outweigh the value you place on having the newest generation.

Is the Cloudsurfer 2 good for beginners?

It can be a reasonable neutral option for a beginner whose running is mostly easy road mileage, provided the fit is comfortable and the firm ride suits them. Start with short, relaxed sessions and increase distance gradually rather than assuming any shoe will suit every new runner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Cloudsurfer 2 suitable for wide feet?

The Run Testers found their usual size comfortable but noted that the toe box may not feel roomy to everyone. RTINGS did not list a wide version at the time of its review; check the current seller’s width range and return policy, and do not rely on sizing up as a substitute for width.

How many miles will the Cloudsurfer 2 last?

There is no controlled mileage result in the reviewed material. On says the revised outsole geometry is intended to improve durability, but lifespan depends on surface, runner, gait and rotation. Inspect the outsole and midsole for meaningful wear rather than using a fixed mileage promise.

Can I race a marathon in the Cloudsurfer 2?

You can use any comfortable shoe for a race, but the model is positioned for short-to-mid-distance daily training, and RTINGS considers it better suited to shorter runs than marathon racing. Runners seeking high energy return or extensive forefoot protection should compare race-oriented alternatives and test any choice first.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The On Cloudsurfer 2 is a smooth-transition, neutral daily trainer for easy road running, not a universally soft or fast shoe. Buy it for the rocker-led feel and firm control when the live price is attractive; pass or compare alternatives if you need plush long-run cushioning, strong forefoot protection, wide-fit room or race-level responsiveness.
