There is no official apples-to-apples benchmark proving that Nintendo Switch 2 is faster overall than the base PlayStation 4. Switch 2 has newer graphics features and supports higher maximum TV output, while Sony published a 1.84-teraflops GPU rating for PS4. Those specifications do not translate into a reliable speed ratio: game performance depends on architecture, power limits, resolution, settings, and optimization.

What the official specifications say

The two manufacturers publish different kinds of information, so the numbers should be treated as specifications—not as a direct contest result.

System Published hardware information What it establishes
Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo describes a custom processor made by NVIDIA. Its official materials do not state a TFLOPS figure. Nintendo Switch 2 announcement Processor supplier and output capabilities, but no official GPU teraflops figure to compare directly with PS4.
Base PlayStation 4 Sony lists an eight-core AMD Jaguar CPU, an AMD Radeon-based GPU rated at 1.84 TFLOPS, and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. Sony PS4 specifications Published hardware details for the base PS4; they do not describe PS4 Pro.

Sony’s original PS4 FAQ also specifies 18 GPU compute units and 1.84 teraflops. Sony’s PS4 FAQ Nintendo has not published a corresponding Switch 2 TFLOPS number in the official materials cited here. An unofficial estimate should not be presented as a Nintendo-confirmed figure.

Why a teraflops comparison would not settle it

TFLOPS is a measure of theoretical floating-point throughput, not a universal score for how quickly a console runs games. Different GPU architectures can do different amounts of useful work per operation, and a console’s power and thermal limits affect sustained performance. Game engines, graphics settings, resolution, and developer optimization matter too.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

That is why dividing one console’s TFLOPS number by another’s would not establish that one is a particular number of times more powerful. In this case, Nintendo has not even published an official Switch 2 figure for that calculation.

Switch 2 has newer graphics features, but support varies by game

NVIDIA says the Switch 2 processor includes an NVIDIA GPU with dedicated RT Cores and Tensor Cores, and describes DLSS and 4K gaming features. NVIDIA’s Switch 2 feature announcement These features indicate capabilities in the hardware; they do not show that every game uses them or guarantee a particular visual quality or frame rate.

DLSS-related upscaling can help produce a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution rendered image, but an output resolution is not necessarily the resolution at which a game renders internally. Actual results depend on each game’s implementation.

Output resolution is not the same as game performance

Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement says that, when connected to a TV through the dock, Switch 2 can output video at up to 4K and play games at up to 120 fps; at 4K output, the frame rate is capped at 60 fps. Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement These are maximum output capabilities, not promises that every game renders natively at 4K or reaches 60 or 120 fps.

For the base PS4, Sony describes game output support up to 1080p and up to 60 fps. Sony’s PS4 FAQ A console’s supported output ceiling does not tell you the resolution or frame rate a particular game maintains. The Switch 2’s higher published TV-output ceiling is a meaningful capability difference, but it is not by itself proof of better performance in every title.

These TV-output figures also do not establish handheld-mode performance for Switch 2. The base PS4 is a home console, while Switch 2 is a hybrid handheld and TV system; their operating contexts differ.

What would prove which console runs a game better?

A useful game-level comparison would test the same game on both systems and identify the versions and modes being compared. It should report rendered and output resolution, image quality settings where applicable, and frame-rate behavior—not simply quote each console’s maximum output specification.

No controlled same-game Switch 2-versus-base-PS4 benchmark is established by the official specifications cited above. Without direct testing under comparable conditions, it is not possible to make a definitive overall performance ranking from those sources alone.

So, is Switch 2 more powerful than PS4?

Switch 2 is the newer design and offers graphics features and maximum TV-output options that are not reflected in the base PS4’s published 1080p output specification. That supports saying it has newer capabilities, but it does not prove that Switch 2 runs every game better—or establish a precise overall performance multiplier. For a specific title, only a direct comparison of that game’s results can answer which version performs better.
