Run three checks before changing anything: open an independent Steam status board on your phone, load an ordinary website, then open the Steam Store over a different network such as mobile data. If several Steam services are red for people in multiple locations, Steam is down and waiting is the correct fix. If status boards are green, other sites work, and Steam works on mobile data or another device, the problem is local to your PC, router, firewall, DNS, ISP, or one game. Steam services fail independently, so a broken Store, download, Cloud save, or game coordinator does not automatically mean the whole platform or your internet connection is offline.

How can I check whether Steam is down right now?

Start with two independent, unofficial monitors: steamstat.us and SteamDB’s Is Steam Down? detector. Check them from a phone using cellular data if your home connection is suspect. Look for the individual components—Store, Community, Web API, Connection Managers, downloads, Cloud and game coordinators—not just a single overall label.

Valve’s own network troubleshooting guidance says to check Steam server status before changing local settings. Valve does not currently maintain a working public status dashboard for consumers; steamstat.us labels itself Unofficial Steam Status, and SteamDB is a separate community monitor. Treat both as evidence, not as Valve guarantees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Green or normal: the monitor’s probes succeeded. A local, regional or game-specific problem can still exist.
  • Yellow or degraded: some requests or regions are failing. Test again from another network before assuming a total outage.
  • Red or multiple components down: a Steam-side incident is likely, especially when reports come from different regions and devices.

Do not infer an outage from a handful of user reports alone. Crowdsourced reports can spike during a short regional or intermittent fault while the main endpoints continue responding.

What can fail when Steam is only partly down?

Steam is a collection of services rather than one server. Login and Connection Managers, the Store, Community pages, Web API, downloads, Cloud synchronization and each game’s matchmaking coordinator can have different incidents.

What fails Most likely explanation
Store, Community and sign-in fail on several devices and networks Widespread or regional Steam outage
Browser pages work, but the client says No Connection or Could not connect to the Steam network Steam client, firewall, proxy, clock, DNS or authentication-path problem
Store and chat work, but downloads stall Download server, selected region, download cache, disk or local network issue
Only one game’s multiplayer fails That game’s servers or matchmaking coordinator, not necessarily Steam overall
Only Steam Cloud fails Cloud service interruption or a save conflict
Steam works on mobile data but not at home Home router, DNS, ISP shaping or blocked ports
Status boards are green and only one computer fails Local PC software, firewall, clock or network configuration
Several components are red on both monitors Steam-side failure; wait for recovery

A game coordinator can be down while the Store and login remain healthy. Conversely, the Store can be unavailable while an already-authenticated client still launches an installed game.

How do I isolate Steam from my internet connection?

Use the tests in this order. Each one removes a different source of ambiguity, so stop changing settings while the evidence still points to a platform outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the status boards from a separate connection. Open steamstat.us and the SteamDB server-status monitor on a phone with Wi-Fi disabled. Note which components are red or degraded and the time of the check.
  2. Load an unrelated website. Open a site you do not normally use. If nothing loads, restart the modem and router and test again. If ordinary sites work but Steam does not, suspect Steam, a Steam-specific firewall rule, DNS failure, blocked ports or ISP filtering.
  3. Test Steam in a browser. Open store.steampowered.com and steamcommunity.com. A working Store in the browser alongside a client No Connection banner points toward the local client, its firewall permissions, proxy settings or an authentication path rather than a total internet failure.
  4. Try another device on the same router. Use a second computer or phone on home Wi-Fi. If Steam works there, the first computer is the likely fault. If both fail, continue to the different-network test.
  5. Switch networks. Disable Wi-Fi on a phone and load the Store using mobile data, or tether the computer. Mobile data working while home broadband fails isolates the router, DNS, ISP or blocked-port path. Failure on both networks raises the probability of a Steam outage or a problem on the computer itself.
  6. Ask whether other players see the same failure. Reports from another household or region are more useful than several devices behind one router. A single-game failure reported by that game’s community does not prove that Steam’s login infrastructure is down.
  7. Record the scope and time. Write down whether Store, Community, login, downloads, Cloud or one game fails. Intermittent and regional faults can disappear between checks, so a timestamp helps you compare later results.

How should I interpret the results?

Use the combination of scope, device and network rather than any single green light.

Status-board result Other websites Mobile or second-network result Best interpretation
Several Steam components red Usually work Steam fails there too Steam-side outage; wait
All components green Work Steam works on mobile data Home router, DNS, ISP or port issue
All components green Work Steam fails everywhere, only on one PC Client, firewall, clock, proxy or malware issue
All components green Work Only one game fails Game server or coordinator issue
One component degraded Work Only that feature fails Partial Steam service incident or regional problem
Boards unreachable and ordinary sites fail Fail Mobile works Home internet, router or ISP outage

What should I do during a confirmed Steam outage?

Wait and preserve your existing session. Independent monitoring has found that many Steam incidents last about five to 30 minutes, while routine maintenance commonly lasts about 15 to 30 minutes; those are third-party observations, not a Valve service-level promise. SteamDB’s published checks recorded 99.2% uptime from 1,060 checks beginning 2 July 2026, illustrating why short failures can be easy to miss in monthly summaries.

Use Offline Mode only when it was prepared

For an installed single-player game, choose Steam > Go Offline while the client can still connect, then restart in Offline Mode. A game generally needs to have launched successfully online at least once, and cloud saves, online multiplayer, achievements that require a connection and login checks will not function offline. Steam Deck users should enable this before losing connectivity whenever possible.

Do not sign out or reinstall

Signing out during an authentication incident can turn an already usable session into a login problem. Reinstalling Steam cannot repair a Valve-side outage and risks creating additional downloads or configuration work; installed games may remain on disk, but the client still has to authenticate when the service returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognize the usual maintenance window

Third-party monitors commonly place weekly maintenance on Tuesday evening in the United States, often near 00:00 UTC on Wednesday. Reports disagree on the exact local clock time, and Valve does not publish a fixed consumer timetable. Sales, major launches and unexpected infrastructure faults can cause outages outside that pattern.

Verify recovery before changing settings

After the boards return to normal, fully exit Steam from the system tray—not merely the window’s X—and reopen it. Confirm sign-in, Friends and one small download. If those work, avoid unnecessary cache or configuration changes.

What should I do if Steam’s status boards are green?

Follow Valve’s troubleshooting order so each change has a clear purpose. Stop when the connection returns.

1. Fully restart the client

Use the tray icon’s Exit Steam command, then confirm no Steam processes remain in the operating system’s task manager or activity monitor. Reopen the client and retry. A normal window close can leave background processes and a stale connection alive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the computer’s clock

Set the operating system to automatic date, time and time-zone detection, then synchronize it. A clock that is several minutes wrong can invalidate secure sign-in certificates and produce connection or code errors even when browsers appear normal.

3. Reboot the modem and router

Power down the modem and router, wait for them to finish shutting down, power the modem back on, wait for its service lights, then power the router and retry Steam. If the modem and router are separate, close Steam and connect the computer directly to the modem for a short diagnostic test. If Steam works only when the router is bypassed, Valve identifies a router configuration or compatibility problem.

4. Test a wired connection

Valve notes that wireless and powerline links can suffer interference and recommends a direct wired test. Connect Ethernet directly to the router or modem; use a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter on a laptop or Steam Deck without an RJ45 port. A wired success does not prove Steam was down—it identifies the wireless or powerline path as the variable.

5. Remove network intermediaries

Temporarily disable a VPN, manual proxy, traffic-shaping utility or game-boosting tool, then retry. University, workplace and hotel networks may block Steam traffic even while ordinary websites load. Ask the network administrator rather than attempting to evade a managed network policy.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

6. Re-permit Steam in the firewall

After a first installation or Steam update, a firewall can keep an old rule that points to a changed executable. Remove stale permissions for steaminstall.exe, steam.exe, hl.exe, hl2.exe and steamTmp.exe, relaunch Steam so the firewall prompts again, and allow both TCP and UDP when appropriate. A brief disable test can confirm the firewall as the blocker; re-enable it immediately after the test. Follow Valve’s firewall guidance.

7. Refresh downloads and embedded web data

For stalled downloads, open Steam > Settings > Downloads, select Clear Download Cache, sign in again and try a different Download Region. Clearing the cache can force a new authentication, so do not use it while a confirmed login outage is in progress. If Store or Community pages fail only inside the client, open Steam > Settings > Web Browser > Delete Web Browser Data.

8. Flush DNS and scan the computer

On Windows, open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns, then restart Steam. If the issue persists while every monitor is green, scan for spyware, malware, adware or viruses; Valve lists malicious or unwanted software as a possible source of connection interference.

Which ports does Steam require?

On a managed network, the administrator—not a random port-forwarding guide—should compare the firewall policy with Valve’s required-port list. Valve says these ports cannot be remapped to HTTP or replaced with a custom range, and individual games can need additional ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Function Valve-listed ports
Login and content downloads TCP remote 80 and 443; UDP and TCP remote 27015–27050
Steam client game traffic UDP remote 27000–27250; UDP remote 4380
Remote Play UDP local 27031–27036; TCP local 27036
Dedicated or listen servers TCP local 27015 for the default Rcon port; UDP local 27015 for default gameplay traffic
Steamworks P2P and Voice Chat UDP remote 3478, 4379, 4380 and 27014–27030

Port information explains why a campus or business connection can block Steam selectively. It does not mean a home user should open every port or forward ports to a gaming PC without understanding the security consequences.

How can I tell whether my ISP is shaping or blocking Steam?

A failure that appears only at predictable times—Valve gives evenings from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. as an example—can indicate ISP blocking or traffic shaping. Keep a short log of the time, affected Steam component and whether mobile data works. Compare a wired test with Wi-Fi, then bypass the router if the modem is separate using Valve’s router-isolation procedure. If direct modem access works, focus on the router; if both home paths fail but mobile data works, contact the ISP with the log.

How reliable are Steam outage statistics?

Outage monitors use different endpoints, locations and sampling intervals, so their percentages are not interchangeable. SteamDB reported 99.2% uptime from its checks beginning 2 July 2026 and a separate Store observation of 99.956% with 46 minutes of downtime in its measured window. Those are independent measurements, not Valve’s official SLA. A Store probe can remain healthy while login, a regional Connection Manager or one game coordinator is failing.

As an example of the difference between platform and user reports, third-party services recorded a roughly 31-minute incident on 27 October 2026 and a longer problem on 26 October, while a separate 26 October user-report surge occurred even though steamstat.us components still appeared normal. Use the component boards, browser test and second-network test together rather than treating one percentage or crowd graph as conclusive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What mistakes make a Steam outage harder to diagnose?

  • Changing several settings at once: you lose the ability to identify whether the router, firewall, DNS or client was responsible.
  • Trusting one status page: a monitor can miss a regional or intermittent failure. Check two boards and a different network.
  • Calling a game-server incident a Steam outage: one coordinator can fail while login and the Store remain healthy.
  • Clearing credentials during an authentication incident: cache clearing and sign-out can create a second problem.
  • Reinstalling during downtime: it cannot repair Valve infrastructure and may add downloads or configuration loss.
  • Leaving a firewall disabled: use the shortest possible confirmation test and restore protection immediately.

The fastest reliable diagnosis is therefore a scope comparison: Steam components, ordinary websites, another device and another network. Once those results agree, choose the matching remedy instead of applying a generic reinstall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Steam games while Steam is offline?

Installed single-player games may work in Offline Mode if they were launched successfully online and Offline Mode was enabled before the outage. Multiplayer, cloud synchronization and features that require a live login remain unavailable until the relevant service recovers.

Why does Steam work on my phone but not on home Wi-Fi?

That pattern points to the home path rather than Steam globally: router rules, DNS, ISP shaping, wireless interference or blocked ports are the usual suspects. Compare a wired connection and a direct modem test, then give the ISP the times and affected services.

How long should I wait before contacting Steam Support?

First confirm that multiple components remain impaired on two independent monitors and on another network. If the incident continues well beyond the usual short maintenance window or only your account remains affected after public recovery, use Steam Support with your timestamps, error text and isolation results.

Does changing Steam’s download region fix a login failure?

Changing the region can help a stalled content-download server, but it does not repair a platform-wide authentication outage. Use it only after login works and the failure is limited to downloads.
