PlayStation Plus Extra is the better choice for most players who want newer PlayStation games. Extra and Premium share the main Game Catalog, so Premium does not provide a separate or earlier stream of new releases. In the United States, Extra costs $134.99 for 12 months and Premium costs $159.99, a $25 annual difference. Premium earns that extra cost through the Classics Catalog, selected game trials, cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog—not through a guarantee that every new PlayStation Store game arrives on day one. Some titles do launch directly into the shared catalog: Sony added Mycopunk on October 20, 2026, for both tiers. That is evidence of a selective day-one policy, not a promise covering every release.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Extra | Players focused on current PS4 and PS5 catalog games | Shared Game Catalog; Ubisoft+ Classics included | $134.99 for 12 months in the US | PS4, PS5 | Oct 2026 |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Players who also want classics, trials or cloud streaming | Shared Game Catalog plus Classics Catalog, selected trials, cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog | $159.99 for 12 months in the US | PS4, PS5, supported cloud streaming to PS5 and PlayStation Portal | Oct 2026 |
Do PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium include the same Game Catalog?
Yes. Sony’s plan comparison lists the main Game Catalog for both Extra and Premium. That shared catalog is the part that matters most if your goal is downloading and playing a broad selection of current PS4 and PS5 games.
Sony describes the Game Catalog as containing hundreds of games, with titles added regularly. A Premium subscription does not unlock a Premium-only “new games” lane, and Sony does not state that Premium members receive catalog additions before Extra members. Ubisoft+ Classics is also included with both tiers, so it is not a reason to pay for Premium.
The overlap does not mean every game is available forever. Sony says catalog availability can vary by plan, region and country, and titles change over time. A game listed today can be removed later, while another title can be added without changing the tier structure. Treat the subscription as access to a changing library rather than ownership of each game.

Does Premium get new PlayStation Store games on day one?
No tier guarantees every new PlayStation Store release on its launch day. Sony’s official descriptions promise a Game Catalog with regular additions, but they do not promise that every first-party, third-party or independently published release will enter the service.
There are selective day-one additions. In a PlayStation.Blog announcement dated October 14, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment senior director Adam Michel said that Mycopunk would release into the Game Catalog day one on October 20 worldwide. Sony made that title available to both Extra and Premium subscribers. The same October lineup included Mafia: The Old Country and Horizon Forbidden West, showing that a catalog update can combine a day-one launch with established games.
The useful distinction is between “some new games launch day one in the shared catalog” and “every new Store game is included day one.” The first statement is supported by the October 2026 example. The second is not. If a particular upcoming game is the reason you are subscribing, verify that title in the live catalog instead of assuming its release date determines eligibility.

How much more does Premium cost than Extra?
At the verified US annual prices checked in October 2026, Premium costs $25 more for 12 months.
| Plan | 12-month US price | Annual difference versus Extra | What the price buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra | $134.99 | — | Main Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics |
| Premium | $159.99 | $25 | Everything in Extra, plus classics, selected trials, cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog |
These are Sony Interactive Entertainment’s stated 2026 prices for the United States. Prices, taxes, introductory offers and renewal terms can differ by country or promotion, so use the price shown in your own PlayStation account before checkout. The $25 difference should be judged against how often you will use Premium’s additional features, not against the size of the shared catalog.
What does Premium add beyond Extra?
Premium’s value comes from features around the Game Catalog. If you will not use those features, the shared catalog makes Extra the more economical tier.

Classics Catalog
Premium adds the Classics Catalog, which is separate from the main catalog of current PS4 and PS5 games. This is the clearest reason for a retro-focused player to upgrade. Extra does not include that collection.
Game trials
Premium includes trials for selected games. A trial can help you sample a supported title before buying it, but the feature does not mean every catalog game or every new release has a trial. Availability depends on which games Sony designates for the program.
Cloud streaming
Premium supports cloud streaming for supported games and use cases. Sony specifies a minimum connection of 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. The supported game list and streaming availability vary by region, country and time.
Cloud streaming can be useful when you want to start a supported game without downloading it, or when you use a compatible PlayStation Portal remote player. Portal is an optional destination for select Premium cloud-streaming games; it is not required to use PlayStation Plus, and buying one does not add games to your subscription.
Sony Pictures Catalog
Premium also includes the Sony Pictures Catalog, a separate entertainment benefit. It may matter to a household that wants films as well as games, but it does not improve access to new PlayStation Store releases. Extra has no equivalent Sony Pictures benefit listed in the plan comparison.
Which tier is best for new PS5 games?
Choose Extra unless your definition of “best” includes Premium’s additional features. Both tiers draw from the same Game Catalog, so a PS5 owner seeking current catalog additions does not gain earlier access by paying for Premium.

Extra is especially appropriate when you:
- Want a large rotating library of PS5 and PS4 games.
- Expect to download games to a PS5 or PS4 rather than stream them.
- Are comparing the plans primarily on new catalog additions.
- Would rather keep the $25 annual difference.
Premium becomes reasonable for a PS5 owner who also wants classics, regularly uses selected trials, or expects to stream supported games. The upgrade is a feature decision, not a new-release decision.
Is Premium worth it if I still play on PS4?
Extra remains the safer value choice for a PS4-focused library, but expectations about new additions should be modest. Sony’s current catalog page says that from January 2026, PS4 games are added only intermittently. There is no promise of a monthly PS4 release cadence.
Premium does not change that PS4 addition policy. Its Classics Catalog, trials and streaming features may still justify the upgrade, but they do not create a larger or faster PS4 new-release pipeline. Check the listing for the exact PS4 version you want, because a PS5 version appearing in the catalog does not by itself confirm PS4 eligibility.
How should I check whether a specific new game is included?
Use the live catalog listing for your account and region immediately before subscribing or purchasing a game. A simple verification routine avoids confusing a launch announcement, a different country’s catalog or a trial with full catalog access.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account you will use. Catalog rights are tied to the account’s country and subscription tier.
- Open the current PlayStation Plus Game Catalog page or the PlayStation Store’s PlayStation Plus area. Use the US listing if your account is in the United States.
- Search for the exact title and edition. Check whether the listing identifies the PS4 version, PS5 version or both.
- Confirm the required tier. A title can be a catalog game, a Premium-only trial or a separate purchase; those are different benefits.
- Check the listing again if you plan to subscribe later. Sony can change catalog membership, regional eligibility and removal dates.
This process is more reliable than assuming that a game’s launch date, publisher or inclusion in a previous month’s lineup predicts its future status.
What are the main availability limits?
Several limits affect both tiers and explain why a catalog subscription is not the same as buying a new Store release.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Catalog membership changes. Games are added and removed over time, and Sony can apply different availability by plan, region or country.
- Day-one access is selective. The October 2026 Mycopunk launch proves that some games can arrive on release day, not that all games do.
- PS4 additions are intermittent. Sony’s January 2026 policy note makes PS4 additions less regular than a reader might expect from a monthly service.
- Streaming is conditional. Premium cloud streaming requires at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p, and only supported games and regions qualify.
- Trials are selective. Premium’s trial benefit applies to designated games rather than the entire catalog.
These limits are reasons to verify a title and connection requirement before paying for an upgrade. They are not evidence that Premium has a hidden release schedule.

Use the extra cost as a checklist rather than a bet on future releases. Premium is easier to justify when at least one of its exclusive features will be part of your normal play routine.
Premium is a good fit when you need two or more of these
- Access to the Classics Catalog.
- Trials for supported games before buying.
- Cloud streaming on supported devices, including select PlayStation Portal use cases.
- The Sony Pictures Catalog as an additional household entertainment benefit.
Stay with Extra when these describe you
- Your priority is the current Game Catalog shared by both tiers.
- You download games to PS4 or PS5 and do not need streaming.
- You rarely play retro titles and do not expect to use trials.
- The annual saving matters more than film access or experimental features.
A reader who upgrades solely because a new game might appear day one is taking on an unsupported assumption. A reader who upgrades for classics, trials or streaming is paying for clearly listed benefits, while still receiving the same main Game Catalog as Extra.
How does PlayStation Portal fit into the decision?
PlayStation Portal is relevant only if Premium’s cloud-streaming feature matches your intended use. Sony identifies Portal as a destination for select Premium cloud-streaming games, so it can make the higher tier more useful for players who want a portable streaming option.
Portal is not a requirement for Extra, does not turn every Game Catalog title into a streamable game and does not guarantee day-one access. Confirm that the game you want is supported for cloud streaming in your region before treating Portal as a reason to upgrade.

1. PlayStation Plus Extra — best for most new-game seekers
Extra ranks first because it includes the same main Game Catalog as Premium at the lower verified US annual price. It is the straightforward choice for players who primarily download current catalog games and do not need Premium’s separate features.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

2. PlayStation Plus Premium — best for feature-rich access
Premium ranks second for this goal because its extra cost does not buy a broader or earlier new-release catalog. It becomes the better personal choice when classics, trials, cloud streaming or the Sony Pictures Catalog have enough value to offset the $25 difference.
How we picked
The ranking uses the decision factors Sony documents: overlap in the main Game Catalog, the two verified US annual prices, Premium-only features, the selective day-one policy, streaming requirements and catalog availability by time and region. It does not assume that every future Store release will join either plan.
What should I remember before subscribing?
Start with the title you actually want to play, then check its live listing for your region and platform. If it is in the shared Game Catalog, Extra normally delivers the same access as Premium. Upgrade only when you also value the Classics Catalog, selected trials, cloud streaming or Sony Pictures Catalog. A day-one example such as Mycopunk can make either tier attractive in a particular month, but it does not change the basic rule: Premium is an expanded-feature tier, not an all-new-releases tier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Mycopunk the only game in the October 2026 Game Catalog update?
No. Sony’s October 2026 lineup also listed Mafia: The Old Country and Horizon Forbidden West. Their presence alongside a day-one release illustrates that monthly additions can mix brand-new launches with older games.
Are PS4 Game Catalog additions scheduled every month?
No fixed monthly cadence is promised. Sony says that from January 2026, PS4 games are added intermittently, so a PS4-focused subscriber should check each update rather than expect a regular number of additions.
Does a Premium game trial mean the full game is included?
Not necessarily. A trial is a limited opportunity to sample a selected title; it is distinct from full Game Catalog entitlement and from purchasing the game. Check the individual listing for the exact trial terms.
Can every Game Catalog game be streamed with Premium?
No. Cloud streaming applies only to supported games and use cases, and availability changes by region, country and time. Sony also specifies a minimum 5 Mbps connection, or 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming.
