In 2026 Blizzard retired the “2” from the public name and refers to the game as Overwatch. The director’s update explains the naming change; the game’s live-service identity continues, so searching for “Overwatch 2” is still useful when looking for launch-era documentation. How much does it cost to unlock heroes now?
For gameplay, the current cost is $0. Blizzard’s Season 10 developer update changed hero access so that new heroes are immediately unlocked when they launch, while the existing roster is made available through the updated onboarding policy. That means a premium Battle Pass is not a requirement for a hero. You do not need to buy a premium track, earn a particular Battle Pass tier, or spend Overwatch Coins to obtain a hero for normal gameplay after the relevant new-player qualification is complete.
The qualification matters for newly created accounts. Blizzard retained a first-time-user experience (often abbreviated FTUE) before the full roster becomes available. Players who have completed that experience are covered by the policy for past, present, and future heroes. What established accounts should expect
An account that has completed the first-time-user experience receives the roster under the Season 10 rule, including heroes released before and after the policy change. New heroes are not put behind a paid Battle Pass gate for those players.

That was a historical estimate from Blizzard Entertainment in 2022, not a verified requirement for accounts created in 2026. The apparent disagreement between websites comes from two different hero-access systems. This timeline puts each rule in its date and shows which parts are historical.

Do you need the Battle Pass or Overwatch Coins for a hero?

Are Mythic skins the same thing as unlocking a hero?
No. A Mythic skin is a cosmetic appearance for a hero, not a different playable character and not a fee for access to the character. Blizzard’s Season 10 update discusses Mythic cosmetics separately from the decision to make heroes available immediately.

Keeping those categories separate prevents a cosmetic price from being mistaken for the cost of a playable hero.
How can you tell whether an online hero-unlock guide is outdated?
Check the language and date before following any payment advice. A guide is describing the original 2022 system if it tells you to perform one of these actions:
- Reach tier 55 of the free Battle Pass for a newly released hero.
- Buy the premium Battle Pass to receive immediate hero access.
- Complete a specific hero challenge as the standard current route.
- Spend Overwatch Coins to purchase an older hero.

- Complete the first-time-user experience presented by the game instead of skipping its introductory requirements.
- Return to the hero-selection screen and check whether the lock has cleared.
- If the account completed onboarding but a hero remains unavailable, record the exact message and consult Blizzard’s current support documentation; the public Season 10 policy says completed players should have access to past, present, and future heroes.
Do not use the 2022 “approximately 100 matches” statement as a promise that a 2026 account will unlock on match 100. Blizzard has not established that current number in the documentation available for this date.
