What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Microsoft PowerToys is a free, open-source suite of Windows utilities, and installing it from Microsoft’s official channels is the sensible choice. That does not guarantee every installation is risk-free, and Microsoft’s reviewed documentation does not publish representative CPU, memory, battery, or performance benchmarks. Its background activity depends on which utilities you enable and what you use your PC to do.
Is Microsoft PowerToys safe?
PowerToys is an open-source Microsoft project that adds Windows utilities for tasks such as arranging windows, remapping keys, launching apps, and handling files. Microsoft recommends installing it from GitHub releases or the Microsoft Store; its installation guide also documents WinGet. Using an official channel helps you avoid unofficial installers, but it is not an absolute guarantee that every installer or installation is risk-free.
The documented minimum is Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1, build 19041) or later, or Windows 11, on a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor. Check the installation guide for current requirements and installation steps.
Control startup and diagnostic data
PowerToys’ General settings include separate controls for whether the app starts when you sign in and whether it collects diagnostic data. The project description says the application logs basic diagnostic telemetry. The reviewed documentation does not establish that diagnostic collection is disabled by default, so check the setting rather than assuming its state.

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
This setting concerns PowerToys diagnostic data; it should not be confused with Windows’ broader diagnostic-data settings. You can also disable utilities you do not use, reducing the features PowerToys needs to keep available.
How does PowerToys affect Windows performance?
There is no supported universal CPU, memory, battery, or slowdown figure to quote: the reviewed Microsoft documentation explains some background behavior but does not provide representative benchmarks. PowerToys’ effect varies with the utilities enabled, whether they need to run continuously, and your workload. It is not accurate to promise zero overhead or to claim that PowerToys slows every PC.

- Windows 11 Pro
For example, PowerToys Run requires PowerToys to be running in the background with Run enabled. Command Palette likewise must be enabled and running in the background. Other utilities have different purposes and behavior; review the PowerToys utility overview and enable only the features you want.
Check whether a utility is behind a slowdown
If you suspect PowerToys is affecting your PC, compare the same workload with the relevant utility enabled and disabled. This is a practical troubleshooting method, not a published benchmark.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Open PowerToys settings and note which utilities are enabled, along with whether PowerToys starts at sign-in.
- Reproduce the slowdown under your usual workload and observe Windows resource use.
- Disable one suspected utility, repeat the same workload, and compare the result.
- If the symptom changes, keep that utility disabled when you do not need it; if not, check other enabled utilities or causes outside PowerToys.
When does PowerToys need administrator access?
Some features may need elevated permissions to interact with apps that are themselves running as administrator. Microsoft gives examples involving keyboard interception and moving or resizing windows. If a specific feature does not work with an elevated app, Microsoft documents restarting PowerToys as administrator or enabling its always-run-as-administrator option.
Do not make permanent elevation the default. Microsoft states: “It’s not recommended to always run an application as administrator unless absolutely necessary.” Elevation can expose the system to security risks, so use it only when a feature you need requires it, and follow Microsoft’s administrator-mode guidance.

Why might Awake affect power use or sleep?
PowerToys Awake is a special case: when enabled, it uses background threads to request a selected machine state and prevent the computer from entering its usual sleep state for the selected interval or mode. Microsoft says, “PowerToys Awake doesn’t modify any of the Windows power plan settings.” When Awake exits, normal power-plan behavior resumes. If your PC stays awake longer than expected, check whether Awake is active and which mode or interval is selected.
