Neither Microsoft Edge nor Firefox is better for everyone. Firefox is a strong fit if you want a browser built on Mozilla’s independent Gecko engine and default protections against cross-site tracking. Edge may suit you better if you value Microsoft integration and want to adjust tracking prevention to balance privacy with site compatibility. Your operating system, required sites, extensions, and privacy settings matter more than a universal ranking.

How Edge and Firefox differ at a glance

What matters Firefox Microsoft Edge
Tracking protection Enhanced Tracking Protection and Total Cookie Protection help limit cross-site tracking, including by keeping cookies associated with the site that created them. Mozilla describes Firefox’s protections. Tracking prevention restricts trackers’ access to browser storage and may block tracker loads. Its level and compatibility mitigations affect enforcement. Microsoft explains the technical approach.
Browser engine Uses Gecko, Mozilla’s browser engine. Uses Blink, the same engine used by Chrome, according to the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s browser comparison appendix.
Data practices Mozilla’s privacy notice describes technical and settings data used for core functionality, as well as differences between local processing and features that may send content to Mozilla servers. Microsoft’s privacy documentation distinguishes required and optional diagnostic data; available controls vary by platform and configuration.
Speed and battery No current controlled comparison established here. No current controlled comparison established here.
Example features Mozilla’s comparison page lists in-browser PDF editing and local webpage translation; availability can vary by platform and version. Tracking prevention settings and controls are documented for supported versions and platforms.

These are differences in approach, not proof that one browser is universally more compatible, private, or capable. The CMA appendix’s compatibility discussion draws on particular developer-needs data, including data retrieved May 22, 2024; it cautions against giving too much weight to any single compatibility measure.

Which browser is more private?

For cross-site tracking, both browsers provide built-in protections. Firefox combines Enhanced Tracking Protection with Total Cookie Protection, which keeps cookies associated with the site that created them. Edge’s tracking prevention restricts tracker access to browser storage and may block tracker loads. Microsoft documents different prevention levels and site exceptions; the level you select and compatibility mitigations can affect what is blocked.

When to choose Firefox’s protections

Firefox makes sense if you want its built-in cross-site protections and prefer an engine separate from Blink-based browsers. See Mozilla’s overview of how Firefox protects data for the company’s description of those features.

When to choose Edge’s protections

Edge is worth considering if you want configurable tracking prevention and the option to make site-specific exceptions when a page does not work as expected. Microsoft’s tracking-prevention guide explains the user-facing controls. Stronger blocking can affect site behavior, so check the setting you actually use rather than assuming every Edge installation blocks the same way.

Tracker blocking is not the same as complete privacy. Browser history stored on your device, account synchronization, diagnostic data, and optional services are separate considerations. Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice, effective May 4, 2026, describes its stated practices by feature. Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation describes its stated data practices and controls. These are vendor notices, not independent audits.

Does Edge block trackers?

Yes. Microsoft documents Edge tracking prevention as a feature that restricts trackers’ access to browser-based storage and the network, and it may block tracker loads. The level you choose and compatibility mitigations influence how it works. That is why it is inaccurate to say Edge has no tracker blocking; the useful comparison is what each browser blocks under your settings and whether the sites you need still work.

Is Firefox faster than Edge?

The evidence here does not establish that Firefox or Edge is currently faster, uses less memory, or lasts longer on battery in a controlled comparison. A meaningful speed or battery verdict would need matched browser versions, hardware, operating systems, settings, and workloads. The CMA appendix discusses compatibility measures, not a current Edge-versus-Firefox speed or battery test, so it cannot support a performance ranking.

Which browser works better with Windows?

Edge may be the more convenient choice if your everyday workflow depends on Microsoft services or Windows integration. Firefox is also available for Windows, as well as macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux; Mozilla’s comparison page describes product features, but availability may differ by device and version. Microsoft’s cited tracking-prevention support page covers Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS. Confirm the features and settings available on your own platform, and check your workplace’s required browser, extensions, or web applications.

How to choose for your own use

  1. Check your essential sites and extensions. Try the browser with the services you rely on, including work or school tools. Engine differences can matter, but neither engine guarantees that every site or extension will behave better.
  2. Set your tracking protection. In Firefox, review Enhanced Tracking Protection and Total Cookie Protection. In Edge, review the tracking-prevention level and site exceptions using Microsoft’s user guide.
  3. Review data settings separately. Read the relevant vendor privacy notice and examine diagnostic-data, sync, and optional-service settings. Do not treat tracker blocking as a complete description of a browser’s data practices.
  4. Compare daily workflow features. If PDF work or local webpage translation matters, check whether Firefox’s listed features are available on your device. If Microsoft integration is central to your routine, test Edge with that workflow.
  5. Test performance on your own setup. Use the same websites and workload on both browsers, with comparable settings and versions. Results from one device or task may not predict performance on another.

What browser choice means for the web

Firefox’s Gecko engine and Edge’s Blink engine represent a meaningful difference in browser-engine diversity. The CMA appendix notes that Edge and Chrome both use Blink and discusses compatibility in specific developer-needs data; it does not establish a complete or current ranking of which browser works best with every site.

Mozilla and YouGov reported that 55% of surveyed U.S. adults were frustrated that companies such as Meta, Microsoft, Apple, and Google track their data without asking. The online survey ran October 3–9, 2025, among 2,610 U.S. adults aged 18 and older; the release says the figures were weighted to represent the U.S. adult population. This is a survey result about respondents’ views, not a browser-specific privacy measurement or a global estimate. In the release, Ajit Varma, Firefox Product Vice President, argued that browser choice deserves more attention and that default-browser choice flows can make alternatives harder to select. Those are Varma’s views as quoted by Mozilla, not an independent study conclusion. Read the Mozilla and YouGov survey release.
