Meta AI can be useful for routine questions and creative tasks, but it is not a place to share information you need to keep confidential. Meta says it uses information people share in its generative AI features to develop and improve AI products. Its safeguards also do not guarantee accurate answers. Whether it is a reasonable choice depends on what you share, which Meta AI feature you use, and your comfort with the applicable controls.
What “safe” means when using Meta AI
There are two separate questions: whether an answer is reliable, and whether you are comfortable with the way information you provide is handled. A service can have privacy settings and still produce a wrong answer; it can also be useful without being an appropriate place for sensitive information.
Meta AI is available through several surfaces, including the web, a mobile app, social and messaging products, and AI glasses. The inputs and controls can differ: typing a prompt is not the same as uploading an image or speaking to a device. Check the privacy and permission settings for the particular app or device you use rather than assuming one setting covers every interaction. Meta describes its Meta AI surfaces.
Does Meta AI use my chats or prompts?
Meta’s September 25, 2024 Connect post says: “We use the information that people share when interacting with our generative AI features, like Meta AI.” Meta says it uses that information to develop and improve AI products. Treat prompts and any text, images, or other material you submit as information shared with the service; do not assume a conversation is excluded from product improvement simply because it is private to you in the interface. That statement is distinct from Meta’s narrower description of training Llama 3.2: Meta said the models discussed in that post were not trained using Facebook or Instagram posts and comments with an audience other than public. This qualification concerns those models and that disclosure; it should not be generalized to all processing of Meta AI interactions, later models, or every kind of information.
Meta’s text-generation system card says sources used to teach generative AI include publicly available and licensed material, as well as information from Meta products and services. It also notes that public internet material can itself contain personal information. Meta’s system cards.

What not to submit
If you would not want information processed by an AI service, do not put it in a prompt, upload, image, or voice interaction. In particular, avoid passwords, financial account details, private medical records, confidential work material, and other highly sensitive information. This is a cautious way to limit exposure based on Meta’s stated data use—not a claim that every prompt is publicly visible or handled identically.
Can I delete Meta AI chat history?
Meta’s September 27, 2023 text-generation system card documents the commands /reset-ai to delete one AI’s copy of chat history and /reset-all-ais to delete copies across AIs. Because that documentation is historical, do not assume the commands are available in every current product. Deleting information is not the same as instantly removing patterns a model may have learned. Meta’s AI glasses guidance says deletion does not immediately change what a model learned; it also says the underlying information is deleted and no longer used for future training once deleted. That distinction matters: a deletion control can address stored source information without promising an immediate change to model behavior. Meta’s AI glasses help and privacy guidance.
What privacy controls should I check?
Available settings vary by product, device, account, and region. Use the controls for the surface where you actually interact with Meta AI, and check operating-system permissions as well as in-app settings.

History, media, location, and voice
Meta’s AI glasses system card describes controls to view or download information provided to the AI, manage privacy settings, adjust location permissions, delete gallery media from Meta’s cloud, and turn voice controls off. These are controls described for glasses; the current menus and options may differ, so verify them on your own device. Meta’s AI glasses help and privacy guidance.
Meta’s Privacy Center says it does not use the microphone without permission and uses it only while a microphone-dependent feature is actively being used, such as voice chat with Meta AI. Account and advertising controls in the United States
Meta’s U.S. regional privacy notice, effective May 23, 2025, describes rights that may include access, correction, deletion, and opting out of targeted advertising, subject to jurisdiction and legal exceptions. It points to Accounts Center and Ad Preferences for certain advertising controls. Meta says it uses filters on prompts and generated responses, conducts evaluations and tuning, and uses user feedback to improve its systems. These are company-described safeguards, not proof that harmful or incorrect outputs cannot occur. Meta also warns that generative AI may return inaccurate or inappropriate results. Use generated answers as a starting point, not as the final authority for decisions that matter. Verify medical, legal, financial, and safety-critical information with appropriate primary sources or a qualified professional. For ordinary factual questions, check important details before relying on them.

When is Meta AI a reasonable choice?
- Lower-stakes tasks: Brainstorming, drafting non-confidential text, or asking routine questions may be acceptable if you are comfortable with Meta’s stated use of generative AI interaction information and you verify important answers.
- Confidential or sensitive material: Do not submit it if disclosure to the service would be unacceptable to you. This includes work documents, account credentials, personal financial details, and private health records.
- Voice, camera, or location features: Consider what the specific feature can access, inspect its permissions, and disable permissions or controls you do not need.
- Account or regional concerns: Review the controls available for your product and jurisdiction. A setting in one Meta app or an advertising preference may not govern every AI feature.
