Mastercard says its updated contactless card specifications are designed to protect against attacks from both traditional and quantum computers. But the October 2022 announcement described cards that issuers could obtain—not a new consumer card you can order—and it did not disclose the card’s cryptography or provide independent evidence of how much safer it is. So the intended protection is clear; its card-specific effectiveness and availability are not established by the announcement.
What Mastercard announced
On October 10, 2022, Mastercard said it had approved the first issuer cards compatible with updated EMVCo contactless specifications designed to protect against attacks from traditional and quantum computers. Mastercard said it had introduced quantum-resistant Enhanced Contactless specifications in January 2021, then worked with EMVCo to develop the work into an industry standard. Mastercard’s announcement is the source for these claims.
The announcement was about technology issuers and card manufacturers could implement, not a Mastercard-branded consumer product with a retail name. Mastercard named Giesecke+Devrient and Thales as manufacturers from which issuers could obtain cards. It said transition timing would be worked out with customers from 2023 onward; that does not show that every issuer adopted the specifications or that a particular card carrying the feature is available to consumers.
What “safer from quantum attacks” means—and what is unknown
The claim is a design goal: Mastercard says the specifications were designed to protect contactless payments against future quantum attacks as well as traditional attacks. The announcement does not say that the cards are “quantum-proof,” nor does it demonstrate that they are.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Specifically, the announcement does not identify the card’s cryptographic algorithms or implementation, report laboratory or field testing, quantify a security improvement over earlier cards, or cite card-specific independent certification. Without those details, readers cannot compare the degree of protection or independently verify the claim. Mastercard’s 2022 statement supports the intended protection, not a measured security outcome.
How this fits the wider shift to quantum-resistant security
Quantum risk is prompting organizations to prepare for changes to cryptography, but broader migration work should not be mistaken for evidence about the implementation in a particular payment card. Mastercard’s 2024 account of its quantum-security work describes a project launched in 2021 that included cloud-based testing of post-quantum cryptography (PQC), investigating whether existing hardware could support PQC through software updates, and modeling quantum key distribution (QKD) architecture. These are company-reported network research activities; Mastercard does not say they establish which technology is used in the 2022 card specifications.

PQC and QKD are distinct approaches, not interchangeable names for one card feature. Mastercard’s October 2025 migration white paper says the timeline for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer remains uncertain and recommends that financial institutions prepare to migrate from classical cryptography.
NIST says three finalized PQC standards are ready to implement and advises organizations to identify vulnerable algorithms and plan updates or replacements. Its post-quantum cryptography guidance provides broader standards and migration context; it does not identify a NIST algorithm used in Mastercard’s payment cards.

What a consumer can—and cannot—conclude
- Supported: Mastercard announced updated contactless specifications designed to address attacks from both traditional and quantum computers.
- Not established: the exact cryptography in a card, independent test results, a quantified improvement, broad issuer adoption, or a consumer card model advertised with this feature.
- Practical next step: If this capability matters to you, ask your card issuer whether it offers cards compatible with the updated specifications. The announcement does not provide a consumer ordering route or a named model to request.
Mastercard’s statements should be read as company claims about design intent. The available announcement is not an independent evaluation of efficacy, and the company’s later network research does not fill that card-specific evidence gap.
