Sometimes—but only after checking the account, the service’s current data policy, and the contents of the file. Uploading your own, non-sensitive notes to a school-approved AI study tool with restricted sharing is generally lower risk than uploading an identifiable assignment to a personal consumer account. Remove names, student IDs, grades, health information, other students’ work, instructor comments, exams, and confidential course material unless your school has expressly approved the use and you have permission.
There is no universal “safe” label for AI study apps. A school-managed Google Workspace for Education Gemini Notebook account has documented protections that differ from a personal Google account. Consumer ChatGPT and Quizlet offer controls, but you must configure them and understand retention, review, training, and visibility rules before uploading.
What determines whether uploading classwork is safe?
Safety depends on four facts: who controls the account, what the service does with uploads, what is in the file, and whether you are authorized to share it. A teacher or student should first ask the school or district whether the application is approved. The U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office says, “A teacher should first check with their school/district administration to see if that application or service is approved for use in the classroom.”
School approval and account type
A school-managed account can be covered by a contract and administrator settings that a personal account does not have. Under FERPA’s school-official exception, a service handling education-record personally identifiable information must remain under the school’s direct control and cannot use or redisclose that information for unauthorized purposes. Approval therefore means more than an app appearing in an app store; it means the institution has reviewed the service and accepted responsibility for how it is configured.

Do not assume that signing in with a school email creates a school-managed environment. Confirm whether the account is administered through your school’s Google Workspace or another institutional system, and whether the specific AI feature is enabled under the school’s agreement.
The sensitivity of the material
A blank study outline is not equivalent to a graded essay with your student number and an instructor’s private feedback. The more a document identifies a person, reveals an education record, or contains confidential intellectual property, the stronger the reason to keep it out of a consumer tool.
Training, review, retention, and sharing
Read the service’s current privacy notice for four separate questions: can uploads be used to improve models, can people review them, how long are copies retained, and who can see the resulting notebook, set, or chat? Turning off model improvement does not necessarily prevent safety, fraud, legal, or backup retention. A private setting also needs checking after you create or share a study set; defaults can differ by product and account.

Redact identifying and confidential material before uploading. If removing a detail would make the document unusable for your study goal, use a short, invented placeholder instead of the real value.
Remove personal and education-record identifiers
- Full names, usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses, and student IDs.
- Grades, teacher comments, disciplinary information, individualized education details, disability or health information, and accommodation records.
- Names or work belonging to classmates, lab partners, interview subjects, or patients.
- Photos, scans, or screenshots that show a roster, gradebook, learning-management-system page, or handwritten signature.
Quizlet’s community guidelines state: “Do not post your own or others’ personally identifiable information on Quizlet.” Treat that as a useful minimum even when a set is intended to be private, because a mistaken sharing setting or copied link can expose it.
Exclude confidential course material
- Unpublished exams, answer keys, test banks, grading rubrics marked confidential, and instructor-only announcements.
- Research data, client records, or workplace information included in a class project under a nondisclosure agreement.
- Another student’s essay, code, presentation, or laboratory results unless that person and the rights holder have authorized the upload.
Ask the instructor before using an exam review packet or a file labeled “for enrolled students only.” A course enrollment gives you permission to read material for the course; it does not automatically grant permission to transfer it to a third-party AI provider.

Check copyright and permission
Upload material you created or are licensed or otherwise authorized to use. Google’s guidance for Gemini Notebook/NotebookLM tells users to respect copyright and upload only sources they have permission to access. A library e-book, paid database article, or publisher’s test bank may have terms that prohibit uploading the full text, even if you can read it for class.
How private are the major AI study tools?
The same product can have different protections for an education account and a personal account. Use this comparison as a decision aid, then read the policy shown for your exact account and region.

What the Google education edition changes
Google says students can upload notes, lecture recordings, and class materials to Gemini Notebook/NotebookLM through Workspace for Education. It describes education-account chats as not human-reviewed and not used to improve generative AI models, while administrators can control access. The education service was announced for availability in more than 180 regions and support for more than 35 languages in 2025; availability can still depend on an institution’s settings and local terms.
Those statements apply to the managed education environment, not automatically to a personal Google account. Google separately says feedback handling can include uploaded content and that reviewed feedback may be retained for up to three years. Do not submit feedback containing sensitive coursework merely because the notebook itself is school-managed.
What ChatGPT settings actually do
In a personal ChatGPT account, open Settings → Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone before uploading. OpenAI says that setting prevents new conversations from being used for model improvement, but it does not make the account a school-managed records system.
For a one-time study session, choose Temporary Chat where available. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, do not create memories, and are not used to improve its models. OpenAI may nevertheless retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Do not interpret “temporary” as immediate deletion or as permission to upload confidential exams.

What Quizlet’s visibility means
Quizlet can collect the text, images, audio, search queries, and school or course information you submit. A set or profile can be visible to other users depending on its settings, and Quizlet says it retains personal information while the account is active or when needed for legitimate business or legal reasons.
Before adding a file, inspect the set’s audience, profile visibility, and any share link. A study set copied from a private class folder can become public if you select the wrong audience. Even a private set should contain only material you are allowed to transmit.
How do I upload notes with the least practical risk?
Use this sequence each time rather than relying on a one-time decision.

Write down whether it is school-managed, institution-approved, or a personal consumer account. If you cannot answer, stop and ask the school’s technology or privacy office.
- Check the current policy. Look for model training, human review, retention, deletion, sharing defaults, subprocessors, age requirements, and administrator access. Policies can change, so check immediately before a sensitive upload.
- Classify the source. Mark the file as personal study notes, an education record, copyrighted material, confidential course content, or a mixture. Treat the strictest category in the file as controlling.
- Redact identifiers. Delete names, IDs, grades, contact details, health or disability information, instructor comments, and other students’ information. Remove metadata and visible filenames that reveal identity.
- Confirm permission. Upload only your own work or material you are licensed or authorized to share. Obtain the instructor’s permission for restricted course files and every collaborator’s permission for shared work.
- Configure privacy. Turn off model improvement or use a temporary mode where the service offers it. Set notebooks and study sets to private, disable public links, and check the audience after saving.
- Keep an original copy. Store the unredacted notes in your normal school-approved location. AI-generated summaries are not a substitute for your source file or your course records.
- Clean up. When studying is finished, remove uploaded sources, chats, or sets if the service allows it, revoke shared links, and review connected apps. Remember that safety, legal, or backup retention may continue under the provider’s policy.
- Verify the output. Compare explanations, quotations, formulas, and citations with the original notes. Privacy controls reduce data exposure; they do not prevent an AI system from inventing an answer.
Is an AI study tool automatically FERPA-safe?
No. FERPA is a U.S. student-privacy law, not a certification badge that every AI product can display. The relevant question is whether the school has placed the service under its direct control, limited its use and redisclosure of education-record information, and configured access appropriately under the school-official exception.
Google describes Workspace for Education Gemini Notebook/NotebookLM as supporting FERPA and COPPA, with administrator controls and protections for education accounts. That does not make a personal account equivalent, and it does not authorize uploading another person’s records. Ask the institution which edition is approved, which data categories are allowed, and how deletion requests are handled.
COPPA concerns children’s online privacy and can affect services used by younger students, but a COPPA reference does not answer every FERPA, copyright, or school-policy question. Age eligibility and parental or school consent may still apply.

Can AI tools train on my homework?
It depends on the product, account, and setting. Consumer ChatGPT content may be used to improve models until you disable Improve the model for everyone; Temporary Chat is excluded from model improvement but can be retained for safety for up to 30 days. Quizlet’s published policy describes collection and retention of uploaded content but does not turn a user-created set into a school-confidential repository.
Because policies and account tiers differ, do not infer a provider-wide answer from a single setting or from a friend’s account. Check the exact edition you are using.

- Accidental sharing: A public set, shared notebook, copied URL, or collaborator permission can expose content that was safe in a private draft.
- Provider retention: Safety, legal, fraud-prevention, backup, or feedback processes can preserve data after you delete the visible chat or source.
- Copyright violations: A private intention does not override a license or course rule that limits copying into third-party systems.
- Re-identification: A rare topic, assignment title, or combination of dates can identify a student even after a name is removed.
- Incorrect output: An AI tutor can misread a lecture, invent a citation, or solve a problem incorrectly. Keep the original source and verify important claims.
- Policy changes: Providers can revise retention, training, or sharing terms. Recheck settings before each new class or assignment.
What should I do if I already uploaded sensitive coursework?
First, change the item’s visibility to private and revoke any shared links. Delete the source, notebook, set, or chat using the provider’s controls, then review connected apps and account sessions. If the material includes another student’s information, an unpublished exam, health data, or a school record, notify your instructor or school privacy office promptly; the institution may have a specific incident process.
Keep a note of the account, date, file, and settings involved so the school or provider can locate the data. Deletion from the visible interface may not erase safety or legally required copies, so ask the provider what remains and for how long.
How much evidence is there about actual exposure?
There is no authoritative published rate showing how often uploaded student notes or assignments are exposed, misused, or reused for training across these services. The defensible decision is therefore policy-based: use an approved, managed account when possible; minimize the data; confirm permission; restrict sharing; and select settings that limit model improvement and retention.

If a document would cause harm if posted publicly or emailed to an unintended recipient, do not upload it to a consumer AI study tool. Ask the school for an approved workflow or use an offline method instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NotebookLM FERPA-safe for a personal Google account?
Not automatically. The documented protections described for Workspace for Education accounts do not transfer simply because you sign in with a school email, and personal-account feedback handling can include uploaded material. Verify that your school administers the account and has approved the feature.
Can I upload a lecture recording that includes classmates?
Only after checking consent, school policy, and the recording’s copyright or classroom rules. Voices and comments can identify other students, so obtain the required permission or use a transcript with identifying details removed.
Will turning off model training make an assignment confidential?
No. It addresses one use of the data, not public sharing, human access for safety, retention, copyright, or school-policy violations. You still need a managed or approved account and a redacted, authorized file.
Are private Quizlet sets invisible to Quizlet staff and other users?
Private settings limit ordinary user visibility but do not mean the provider cannot process the content. Quizlet’s policy covers uploaded text, images, audio, queries, and course information, and it may retain personal information while the account is active or for legitimate business or legal reasons.
What is the safest way to study with an unpublished exam?
Do not upload the exam or answer key to a consumer service. Use an instructor-approved school tool, request a permitted practice copy, or create your own questions without reproducing confidential content.
