Yes—if you own a PS5 and want a cinematic, exploration-heavy action game, Ghost of Yōtei offers a substantial one-player campaign and does not require you to join its multiplayer mode. The main question is whether its open-world detours and combat are your kind of fun, and whether the additional paid content suits you. The base game already includes New Game Plus and replayable encounters; the Complete Edition adds a separate story chapter and a solo survival mode.

There is no single reliable number for how long the base game takes: published estimates range from about 10 hours for a story-focused easiest-difficulty run to 80-plus hours for a completionist route. That spread reflects different play styles, not a promise that every solo player will get the same amount of time from the game. The practical buying choice is between the standalone campaign, free replay features and paid additions—not whether you must play online.

What does Ghost of Yōtei offer a solo player?

Ghost of Yōtei is a one-player action-adventure game centered on Atsu, whose story unfolds in rural Japan in the 1600s. Its campaign follows her hunt across Ezo, mixing weapon-based combat with travel, exploration and optional activities. PlayStation describes both melee and ranged combat, horseback and on-foot travel, and activities that can improve Atsu’s abilities. The game is for PS5 and supports PS5 Pro; it is not a PS4 release.

The setting is roughly 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, but Sucker Punch describes Yōtei as a standalone experience. You do not need to know Tsushima’s story to follow Atsu’s. That makes the game a straightforward option for a first-time player of the series as well as someone returning for another story in the same broad historical world.

The solo appeal is not just the plot: you can move between exploration and combat at your own pace, with optional content available beyond the central story. That freedom also shapes the main caveat. If you tend to find open-world diversions tedious, a large map and a stream of optional activities may feel like obligations rather than added value.

In other words, being a solo player is not itself a reason to hesitate. PlayStation lists the game as one-player, and Atsu’s campaign is the core experience rather than a mode that depends on an online group. The more useful question is whether you enjoy this kind of open-world pacing: travel, optional activities and combat encounters sit alongside the central story. Someone who wants to follow the main plot can do that; someone who enjoys checking side paths and building up abilities has more to pursue.

What the combat and exploration are like

In GameSpot’s 2025 review, Richard Wakeling praised the exploration, story and variety across five weapons. The same review noted that some bounty targets felt generic and that the camera occasionally interfered with combat. Those are one reviewer’s judgments, not guarantees of how every player will experience the game, but they help describe the trade-off: there is variety in how you approach fights, alongside some familiar open-world encounters and possible camera frustration.

For a solo-focused buyer, the key is whether you want a game that lets you alternate between a central narrative, travel and optional diversions. The game’s one-player designation is not a stripped-down version of a multiplayer product: Atsu’s campaign is the core experience. The separate Legends mode is optional co-op content, not a prerequisite for the story.

PlayStation’s feature description points to multiple ways to move through the world—on horseback or on foot—and to both melee and ranged combat. Optional activities can improve abilities, so exploring is not only a way to see more of Ezo; it can also support character progression. That does not mean every activity is essential. If you prefer to stay focused on Atsu’s story, the optional nature of these diversions gives you room to prioritize rather than treating completion as a requirement.

The five-weapon variety praised by GameSpot is a useful consideration for players who want combat to remain a substantial part of a long campaign. But the review’s caveats matter too: if repetitive-feeling bounty targets or occasional camera interference would quickly frustrate you, the fact that the game is solo-friendly will not necessarily make it a fit. Those details are best read as one reviewer’s experience, not a universal verdict.

How long is Ghost of Yōtei?

There is no official fixed completion time. Sucker Punch’s FAQ answers the question with, “That depends on you, the player.” Published estimates vary considerably because they describe different play styles and routes, so treat them as reference points rather than a promised runtime.

Source and scenario Estimated time
PowerPyx, story-focused run on the easiest difficulty (2025) About 10 hours
PowerPyx, moderate side content on Medium difficulty (2025) 20–30 hours
PowerPyx, completionist playthrough (2025) 50–60 hours
GamesRadar+, critical path (2025) 35–40 hours
GamesRadar+, critical path plus some extra content (2025) 40–60 hours
GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling, story finished before cleanup (2025) 53 hours

These figures are not directly interchangeable: one source’s story-focused route can be much shorter than another source’s critical-path estimate, and the 53-hour figure is one reviewer’s disclosed time to finish the story before cleanup. Difficulty, travel, how much optional content you pursue and what each source counts as the “story” all affect the result. Don’t average the estimates into a definitive number; use the scenario closest to how you play.

The gap between the estimates is especially important when deciding whether the game seems too short or too long for you. PowerPyx’s roughly 10-hour estimate is specifically for a story-focused run on the easiest difficulty; it is not its estimate for a typical route with side activities. Its 20–30-hour figure assumes moderate side content on Medium, while its 50–60-hour completionist figure concerns a much more thorough playthrough. GamesRadar+ gives a longer 35–40-hour critical-path estimate and 40–60 hours with some extra content. GameSpot’s 53 hours describes one reviewer’s story finish before cleanup, not a measured average.

For a player who likes to explore, the shorter story-focused number is unlikely to describe the whole experience they choose to have. For someone who avoids optional activities, a completionist number would be just as misleading in the other direction. Travel and difficulty also influence the time. The safest expectation is a range tied to your habits, rather than buying on the assumption that a single published number is guaranteed.

The paid Echoes of Sekigahara expansion is separate from those base-game estimates. VGC reviewer Jordan Middler estimated about five hours for its main story in an October 2026 review, with side missions and bounties adding a few more. That is one reviewer’s estimate for the expansion’s main campaign, not an official duration or a total for the complete package.

What can you replay without buying an upgrade?

Owners of the base game have reasons to return after finishing the story. A free November 2025 update added New Game Plus, replayable post-game content and additional progression and reward options, so replay value is not exclusive to the Complete Edition.

New Game Plus and repeatable encounters

New Game Plus unlocks after you finish the main story. It lets you restart while retaining earned progress and adds harder difficulty options. The update also introduced Ghost Flowers, which can be exchanged for rewards, as well as additional equipment upgrades and replayable post-game content.

PlayStation’s live page, verified in 2026, lists 22 challenge content locations and 27 duels among the replayable material. Those are counts of locations and duels, not hours of new story. They are most useful to players who want another reason to revisit combat or pursue challenges; they should not be mistaken for a second campaign.

This makes the base game a more complete solo purchase than a buyer might assume if they associate replay value only with a paid expansion. After the main story, New Game Plus offers a way to restart with earned progress retained, and the harder difficulty options give players a different challenge. Ghost Flowers, rewards and further equipment upgrades add progression goals, while the challenge locations and duels provide combat-focused activities to revisit.

Those features are most relevant if you enjoy repeating encounters or want to take another pass through the game after the story. They are less compelling if you usually move on once the credits roll. Crucially, they do not amount to a second full-length narrative campaign: PlayStation’s figures count locations and duels, not story hours. A solo buyer should think of them as replayable combat and progression content, not as a guarantee of a specific amount of extra playtime.

Free changes that are not part of the paid upgrade

The October 2026 patch also brought Beauty of Yōtei, additional Watanabe Mode tracks, armor-appearance flexibility and a high-contrast setting to existing owners without requiring the Complete Edition Upgrade. These additions are a reason to check what is already included with an owned copy before paying for more content.

That distinction matters when comparing a base-game owner’s options. The Complete Edition Upgrade is for the two paid solo additions; the listed October patch features are available to owners without buying it. Do not treat every feature added after launch as part of the paid bundle. If your main interest is the free update, you can first check the game’s current patch and settings rather than assuming you need to spend more.

What does the Complete Edition add for solo play?

The Complete Edition’s main solo additions are Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted. They offer different kinds of return visits: one is another Atsu story in a new area; the other is a repeatable combat-survival mode. Neither is necessary to play the base campaign.

Echoes of Sekigahara

Echoes of Sekigahara adds a new narrative for Atsu in a new area. VGC’s October 2026 review estimated roughly five hours for its main campaign, with a few more hours available through side missions and bounties. Middler considered the expansion worthwhile but wished it were longer; that is an individual reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of value for every buyer.

For someone who values story over repeatable combat, Echoes is the clearest reason to consider the upgrade. Its length is compact relative to the widely varying estimates for the base game, so it is better understood as an additional chapter than as another full-length campaign. If you already own the base game, weigh the upgrade against your interest in a few more hours with Atsu and a new area—not against a promise of a second game’s worth of narrative.

Most Wanted

Most Wanted is a single-player combat-survival mode built around repeatable runs, perks and unlockable playable characters. VGC found it engaging. Its appeal depends on whether you enjoy replaying combat scenarios and working toward unlocks; a player primarily looking for another long narrative may care more about Echoes than this mode.

The two additions therefore suit different kinds of solo players. Echoes offers a new story and setting; Most Wanted is designed around repeating runs and pursuing perks and character unlocks. If you like both narrative and combat challenges, the package has more than one reason to revisit the game. If you only want a new story, Most Wanted may not change your decision much. If you want repeatable fights but are not looking for another chapter, the reverse may be true.

In practical terms, the upgrade is easier to justify if both a compact story chapter and repeatable combat sound appealing. If you mainly want the original campaign, or know you are unlikely to replay combat, the Complete Edition’s extra modes may add little personal value.

Which edition should you buy?

For a new US digital buyer, PlayStation’s listing is the $69.99 Complete Edition. Someone who already owns the original game can instead buy the $14.99 digital Complete Edition Upgrade for the two paid solo additions. PlayStation separately lists a Standard Edition Blu-ray; the cited physical listing is not identified as a Complete Edition disc, so do not assume the expansion content is on that disc.

US PlayStation listings checked Oct 2026
Buying situation Option What it includes Listed price
New digital buyer Complete Edition Core game, Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted and additional in-game items $69.99
Existing owner of the original game Complete Edition Upgrade (digital) The two paid solo additions: Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted $14.99
Buyer choosing a physical copy Standard Edition Blu-ray Standard Edition physical copy; the listing does not establish that it includes Complete Edition expansion content Not stated in the cited listing

These are observed US PlayStation listings, not a promise of the lowest retailer price or a guarantee of current inventory. The former September 30 early-unlock promotion for the Complete Edition has expired. Check the store listing at purchase time, particularly if you are comparing a physical Standard Edition with a digital Complete Edition.

Physical or digital?

The documented physical option is a Standard Edition Blu-ray. A disc copy requires a compatible PS5 disc drive, so the console’s edition matters before you choose it; a digital-only PS5 changes the buying path. If you want the two paid additions, the documented route for an existing owner is the digital Complete Edition Upgrade. The available listing details do not establish that expansion content is included on the Standard Edition disc.

For a new buyer, the edition decision is not simply “disc or digital.” It is also a comparison between a physical Standard Edition and a digital Complete Edition that bundles the core game, Echoes, Most Wanted and additional in-game items. The cited listings do not provide a Standard Edition price here, so compare the current price you see rather than assuming the disc is cheaper or that it contains the paid additions. If you already own the original game, the separately listed $14.99 upgrade is the relevant digital route for those two paid modes.

The prices above are US listings observed in October 2026. They are not worldwide prices, a guarantee of current availability or a promise that another retailer will charge the same amount. The previous Complete Edition early-unlock promotion ended September 30; it should not be treated as an active discount or reason to buy now. Check the live listing and edition contents when you are ready to purchase.

Does a solo player need PlayStation Plus?

No subscription is required for Atsu’s one-player campaign or the solo modes described above. PlayStation Plus is relevant to Legends, the optional online co-op mode, and is sold separately.

PlayStation describes Ghost of Yōtei Legends as a co-op multiplayer mode that is free for owners of Ghost of Yōtei. It is not the campaign, and its multiplayer focus should not be used to judge whether the solo game is complete enough on its own. A player who wants only Atsu’s story can make the purchase decision without treating Legends as required content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is useful to separate two meanings of “free” here. PlayStation says Legends is free for owners, but online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, which is sold separately. That condition applies to the co-op mode; it does not mean you need a subscription to play the one-player campaign. Nor does the existence of Legends make the Complete Edition’s solo story and survival additions mandatory—the base game and its free replay update are separate from the optional online mode.

Who should buy Ghost of Yōtei for solo play?

It is a strong fit for a PS5 owner looking for a cinematic action-adventure with a standalone story, weapon variety and room to explore. Its value is less certain for someone who wants a tightly paced campaign with few detours or who has little interest in revisiting combat after the credits.

  • Consider buying the base game if the campaign and exploration are what you want; the story is designed to stand alone, and the base game already has New Game Plus and replayable encounters.
  • Consider the Complete Edition or upgrade if another Atsu story and a repeatable solo survival mode both sound worthwhile to you.
  • Look closely at how you play if you avoid side activities or rarely replay games. A higher completionist estimate does not mean you must clear the map, and additional content is only valuable if you want to engage with it.
  • Confirm your hardware and format before buying: the game is for PS5/PS5 Pro, not PS4, and a Blu-ray copy needs a compatible disc drive.

One final perspective on the game’s reach: Sony reported 3.3 million global cumulative sell-through units as of November 2, 2025, 32 days after the US release. That is a historical sales figure, not a current total, a playtime measure or proof that solo play suits every buyer. It is not a substitute for deciding whether the game’s structure and combat match your preferences.

The clearest buying caveat is preference, not a missing online feature. Ghost of Yōtei has a substantial solo offering, but its open-world structure and optional replay content make the best purchase depend on whether you enjoy exploring and returning to its combat. For a new digital buyer, compare the Complete Edition’s $69.99 US listing with your interest in its two paid additions; for an existing owner, consider whether the $14.99 upgrade’s extra story and repeatable mode are worth it to you. If you want only the campaign, you do not need Legends, PS Plus or the paid upgrade to play Atsu’s story.

Yes. The free November 2025 update added New Game Plus, which unlocks after finishing the main story, along with harder difficulty options, Ghost Flowers for rewards, additional equipment upgrades and replayable post-game content.

Does the physical Ghost of Yōtei disc include the Complete Edition expansion?

The listed physical Blu-ray is Standard Edition. The listing does not establish that it includes Complete Edition expansion content. The documented route for an existing owner is the digital Complete Edition Upgrade.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Ghost of Yōtei is a worthwhile solo option for a PS5 player who likes cinematic action, exploration and a standalone story. The campaign does not require Legends or PlayStation Plus, and the free New Game Plus update gives owners replay features without an upgrade. Buy the Complete Edition or its digital upgrade only if Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted appeal to you; the game’s variable length and optional content make personal play style more useful than any single hours estimate.
