Is CrystalDiskInfo accurate? CrystalDiskInfo is generally accurate when reading and interpreting the SMART or NVMe health data exposed by a drive, but its “Good,” “Caution,” or “Bad” label cannot guarantee that a drive will remain reliable or predict exactly when it will fail.

CrystalDiskInfo is best understood as a SMART-data reader and warning system, not an independent laboratory test. The program usually does not scan every sector merely by opening, prove that every file is readable, test every cable or controller, or guarantee that a drive marked “Good” will not fail suddenly.

As of August 18, 2026, the official Crystal Dew World download page lists CrystalDiskInfo 9.9.2, released July 25, 2026. Download the utility from the official site rather than an unofficial mirror.

Key takeaways

  • CrystalDiskInfo accurately reports the SMART or NVMe health information that the drive and storage controller make available, but the software does not independently test every part of the storage system.
  • On HDDs, “Caution” commonly results from nonzero or threshold-crossing values for 05 Reallocated Sectors Count, C5 Current Pending Sector Count, or C6 Uncorrectable Sector Count.
  • On NVMe SSDs, a nonzero Critical Warning or an Available Spare value below its threshold is more urgent than a simple change in Percentage Used.
  • NVMe Percentage Used describes estimated life consumed, not the percentage of life remaining; Microsoft defines the value as a vendor-specific estimate based on usage and the manufacturer’s prediction.
  • A “Good” result means that no configured warning condition has been triggered in the data currently visible to CrystalDiskInfo; it is not a backup strategy or a guarantee against sudden failure.
  • If a drive shows “Caution,” “Bad,” disappearing-drive symptoms, I/O errors, or worsening SMART values, back up or clone important data before running demanding diagnostics.

Is CrystalDiskInfo accurate?

CrystalDiskInfo is usually accurate at displaying the health data reported by a compatible drive. The important qualification is that CrystalDiskInfo can only interpret the information exposed through the drive, controller, driver, firmware, and connection path.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT) | SATA HDD/SSD only, Not USB-C, Not M.2 NVMe, 3.5in needs included 12V adapter, hard drive reader, hdd enclosure
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.

CrystalDiskInfo reads SMART information from many SATA drives and the corresponding health information from NVMe devices. The program displays information such as the drive model, capacity, interface, firmware, temperature, power-on count, power-on hours, supported features, and SMART attributes. The official general-information documentation describes these fields and the program’s health-status colors.

That makes CrystalDiskInfo a SMART-data reader and interpreter, rather than an independent prediction engine. SMART data is useful evidence about recorded media errors, endurance estimates, temperatures, and other device conditions. SMART data cannot prove that every sector is currently readable, that the filesystem is intact, that the power supply is reliable, or that the drive will provide advance warning before an electronic, firmware, controller, or mechanical failure.

CrystalDiskInfo should also not be confused with CrystalDiskMark. CrystalDiskInfo monitors device health, while CrystalDiskMark is a storage-performance benchmark. A benchmark result does not replace SMART information, and a SMART result does not measure the same thing as a benchmark.

What do Good, Caution, Bad, and Unknown mean?

CrystalDiskInfo’s color is a summary of the health conditions it can interpret, not a universal industry-wide percentage score.

CrystalDiskInfo status What it generally means What it does not prove Recommended response
Good / blue No configured warning condition has been triggered in the currently exposed SMART or NVMe data. The drive will not fail, every sector is readable, or all files are safe. Continue using the drive if there are no other symptoms, but maintain current backups and monitor changes.
Caution / yellow A monitored attribute has crossed its configured caution threshold. The drive will fail today or that every yellow result has the same severity. Back up important data immediately, identify the triggering attribute, and plan replacement when the evidence supports it.
Bad / red A serious vendor-defined or configured health condition has been detected. A precise failure date or guaranteed immediate shutdown. Stop relying on the drive for unique data, recover or clone data carefully, and replace the drive.
Unknown / gray Required health data is unavailable or cannot be interpreted. The drive is healthy or dead. Check the USB bridge, RAID controller, drivers, firmware, connection, and manufacturer diagnostic tool.

For HDDs, the official CrystalDiskInfo health-status documentation identifies 05 Reallocated Sectors Count, C5 Current Pending Sector Count, and C6 Uncorrectable Sector Count as principal warning attributes. The exact attributes used for SSDs vary by device family and manufacturer.

Why can two drives show different warnings for similar values?

SMART attributes and thresholds are not identical across all drives. Manufacturers define many attributes themselves, and the same attribute ID can have different meanings or raw-value formats on different models. Western Digital explains that manufacturers define their own SMART attributes and thresholds in its SMART attribute documentation.

CrystalDiskInfo also allows HDD caution thresholds to be changed or disabled. In the official health-status settings manual, a threshold setting of 0 means that the attribute is ignored. Restore default settings before interpreting a result, and do not hide a warning simply because the drive still works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which HDD SMART values matter most?

For an HDD, the triggering attribute and its trend matter more than the color alone. Record the raw value, compare it over time, and consider the drive’s symptoms and connection path.

What does 05 Reallocated Sectors Count mean?

05 Reallocated Sectors Count records sectors that the drive has moved to spare media because the original sectors were judged unreliable. A raw value of zero means that the drive is not reporting reallocated sectors at that moment. Any nonzero raw value is evidence that the drive has experienced a media problem or used spare sectors.

One reallocated sector does not prove that failure is imminent, but it should prompt a backup and closer monitoring. An increasing count is stronger evidence that the media is deteriorating. A large or rapidly increasing count is a replacement-level warning, especially when it appears alongside pending or uncorrectable sectors. Western Digital describes the raw value as the count of bad sectors found and remapped in its SMART attribute reference.

Pay more attention to the raw count and its trend than to the normalized “Current” number. Normalized values are manufacturer-specific and are not a universal number of remaining healthy sectors.

What does C5 Current Pending Sector Count mean?

C5 identifies sectors that the drive has struggled to read and has not yet successfully remapped. A pending sector may remain readable during some operations, and a later successful rewrite can cause the value to clear. A cleared value does not make the earlier read failure irrelevant.

Back up immediately when C5 is nonzero or rising. Do not deliberately overwrite a questionable drive before securing its files. A full write or destructive test can make data recovery harder and may place additional stress on an unstable drive.

What does C6 Uncorrectable Sector Count mean?

C6 indicates read errors that the drive could not correct through its normal error-correction process. A nonzero or increasing C6 value is serious evidence of unreliable media or unreadable data. Back up immediately and plan to replace the drive; filesystem tools cannot promise to repair the underlying physical media.

Does temperature determine whether an HDD is healthy?

Temperature is one sensor reading, not a complete health diagnosis. CrystalDiskInfo can display temperature and configurable alert colors, but the value may be captured at idle, during a transfer, or after a brief thermal spike.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider whether the HDD is installed in a laptop, desktop, external enclosure, or poorly ventilated bay; whether temperature rises sharply during sustained transfers; and the manufacturer’s operating and warning limits. A normal temperature does not cancel out bad sectors, while one brief high reading does not by itself prove permanent damage. A missing, fixed, implausibly low, or implausibly high temperature can also indicate a sensor-reporting or interface problem.

How should SSD and NVMe health values be interpreted?

SSD health indicators are less uniform than HDD indicators because manufacturers expose different endurance, lifetime, media-error, and controller attributes. CrystalDiskInfo’s SSD health-status documentation lists different attributes used by families from Intel, Samsung, Indilinx, SandForce, JMicron, and Micron.

An SSD “health percentage” is therefore not a universal measurement of remaining usable time. A drive may continue working after its displayed lifetime estimate becomes low, while a controller, firmware, power, or electronic failure can occur before the displayed percentage reaches zero.

NVMe value What it represents How to interpret it
Critical Warning A standardized warning field containing condition bits. Any nonzero value deserves urgent investigation, particularly if it indicates degraded reliability, low spare capacity, excessive temperature, or read-only operation.
Available Spare A normalized percentage of the drive’s internal spare capacity remaining. Compare it with Available Spare Threshold. Falling below that threshold can trigger a warning.
Percentage Used A vendor-specific estimate of the percentage of the NVM subsystem’s designed life consumed. It is not remaining life and does not provide a guaranteed failure date.
Temperature A reported device or controller temperature, depending on the interface and model. Use it with workload, cooling, and the manufacturer’s limits rather than as a standalone diagnosis.

What does NVMe Percentage Used mean?

NVMe Percentage Used means estimated life consumed, not estimated life remaining. Microsoft’s NVMe health-information-log documentation defines the field as a vendor-specific estimate based on actual usage and the manufacturer’s prediction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, Percentage Used = 5 generally means the manufacturer estimates that approximately 5 percent of the drive’s designed lifetime has been consumed. It does not mean that only 5 percent of the drive’s life remains. A value of 10 similarly means approximately 10 percent estimated use, not 10 percent remaining life. The value can potentially exceed 100 during continued use, so do not treat 100 as a universal failure date.

Interpret Percentage Used alongside Critical Warning, Available Spare, Available Spare Threshold, temperature, media errors, error-log entries, and the SSD manufacturer’s diagnostic software. Do not convert a percentage into “months remaining” without model-specific evidence.

Why is NVMe Critical Warning more urgent than a lifetime percentage?

A nonzero NVMe Critical Warning indicates an active standardized health condition and deserves more urgent attention than an ordinary change in Percentage Used. The NVMe health information documented by Microsoft includes bits for available spare below threshold, excessive temperature, degraded reliability, and the device entering read-only mode.

Available Spare is separate from free space in Windows File Explorer. A drive can have abundant user-visible free space while its internal spare pool is low or its endurance indicators are deteriorating. Western Digital documents the relationship between Available Spare and Available Spare Threshold in its NVMe SMART and health-information reference.

When can CrystalDiskInfo be incomplete or misleading?

CrystalDiskInfo can appear inaccurate when the connection path prevents complete access to SMART or NVMe health data. The issue may be an unsupported USB-to-SATA bridge, a hardware RAID controller, Intel RST or VROC, virtualization, a driver, firmware behavior, or a drive that is failing too severely to report consistently.

Connection or situation Possible limitation Practical check
USB external enclosure The USB bridge may pass no SMART data or only a subset of attributes. Connect the drive directly to a supported motherboard port when practical, or try a known-compatible enclosure.
Hardware RAID The controller may hide individual physical-drive health data or expose it incompletely. Use the RAID controller’s management software and follow its member-disk replacement procedure.
Intel RST, VROC, or another storage abstraction The driver or controller layer may change how health data is exposed. Check the controller documentation and manufacturer diagnostic utility.
NVMe behind an adapter or controller Critical warnings, error logs, or endurance fields may not be fully visible. Test through a direct supported NVMe path if possible.
Firmware or sensor anomaly Power-on hours, temperature, or vendor-specific fields may be missing or implausible. Compare the value with model documentation and a second diagnostic tool.
Severely failing drive The drive may disappear or fail to return consistent health information. Prioritize recovery or cloning instead of repeatedly polling or scanning the drive.

CrystalDiskInfo’s official FAQ states that support for USB devices and hardware RAID is limited and depends on the controller, bridge, and drivers. “Unknown” or an incomplete SMART table therefore does not prove that the physical drive is healthy or dead.

A RAID array can remain operational while one member is deteriorating. Inspect the RAID controller’s own disk status, preserve the array’s recovery procedure, and do not casually remove a disk from a degraded array.

What should you do when CrystalDiskInfo shows Caution or Bad?

Back up first, before testing or attempting repairs. A warning is a reason to preserve data, not a reason to begin with a long surface scan or destructive operation.

  1. Stop treating the color as a diagnosis. Record the drive model, serial number, interface, firmware, health label, temperature, power-on count, power-on hours, every nonzero warning attribute, and a screenshot or copy of the SMART table.
  2. Secure irreplaceable data. Copy documents, photos, databases, password vaults, and other unique files to another physical device or a verified cloud destination. If the drive is unstable, disappearing, unusually slow, or producing I/O errors, use a recovery-oriented clone or image workflow rather than repeatedly browsing the disk.
  3. Identify the trigger. Determine whether the warning is caused by 05, C5, C6, an NVMe Critical Warning, Available Spare, Percentage Used, temperature, a vendor-specific endurance field, or an interface and communication error.
  4. Check the connection path. For an external drive, try another cable, USB port, enclosure, or power supply when communication errors are suspected. Connect directly to a supported motherboard port where practical.
  5. Cross-check with a second tool. Use the manufacturer’s utility when available. For Seagate drives, the SeaTools guide documents drive-information and SMART-related functions for Windows and Linux.
  6. Run non-destructive diagnostics only after backup. A short SMART self-test or manufacturer diagnostic can help confirm a problem. An extended test is more thorough but slower and potentially stressful. A surface scan reads the disk but does not repair failing hardware.
  7. Replace the drive when the evidence supports replacement. Replacement is prudent when C5 or C6 is nonzero or increasing, reallocated sectors continue to rise, an NVMe Critical Warning appears, the drive becomes intermittently unavailable, diagnostics fail, files become corrupted, or I/O errors occur.

A filesystem check tests filesystem consistency, not the complete physical health of the storage device. A passed test after a warning also does not erase a history of reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

What should you do when CrystalDiskInfo shows Good?

A “Good” result can justify continued monitoring, but it cannot replace backups. “Good” generally means that CrystalDiskInfo did not detect a configured warning condition in the SMART or NVMe data currently exposed by the device.

A green result does not prove that the drive has no corrupted files, every sector is readable, the cable and power path are reliable, or the drive will last for a specified number of months or years. Sudden electronic, controller, firmware, power, interface, and mechanical failures can occur without a prior color change.

Continue normal use when the drive is behaving normally, but investigate freezes, disappearing drives, unusual slowness, file corruption, and Windows I/O errors even if the CrystalDiskInfo label remains green. Keep at least one current backup that is separate from the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should unusual SMART values be handled?

Unusual SMART values should be interpreted by drive model, attribute definition, raw-value format, and trend. A raw value can be a simple count, percentage, lifetime estimate, packed hexadecimal field, temperature or time value, or a vendor-specific composite.

Do not apply a universal table that claims every SMART ID has one meaning. The same ID can mean different things on different manufacturers’ models, and a normalized value can be more important than a raw value for one attribute while the opposite is true for another.

Power-on hours can also look unusual because of firmware conventions, sleep states, unit choices, rollover, or previous use. Certain older Maxtor models, for example, have a model-specific rollover limitation described in the CrystalDiskInfo-related FAQ. Treat that as a model-specific example, not a general explanation for every strange hour count.

If CrystalDiskInfo shows a caution result caused by an attribute that looks noncritical, identify the exact model and consult the manufacturer’s documentation. Compare the value over time rather than dismissing the warning or declaring the drive dead from one unfamiliar number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How does CrystalDiskInfo compare with Windows and manufacturer tools?

Different tools can expose different portions of a drive’s health information because they use different interfaces and coverage. A disagreement is a reason to preserve data and investigate, not a reason to select the least alarming result.

Tool or source Best use Important limitation
CrystalDiskInfo General Windows SMART/NVMe monitoring and a readable summary of exposed attributes. Support is incomplete for some USB, RAID, and controller configurations; vendor-specific values still require model context.
Drive manufacturer utility Model-specific diagnostics, firmware information, and manufacturer interpretation. Usually most useful for that manufacturer’s drives, not necessarily a cross-brand monitor.
Windows storage-health view Built-in health warnings for supported storage configurations. Microsoft documents the relevant feature as monitoring NVMe SSDs, not SATA SSDs or HDDs; it does not expose exactly the same coverage as CrystalDiskInfo.
RAID-controller software Individual member status, array condition, and replacement workflow. Required when the RAID controller hides or abstracts the physical disks.
Linux tools such as smartctl Command-line and detailed SMART access when the drive is being examined from Linux. Output and access still depend on the device, controller, bridge, and permissions.

Microsoft’s storage-health guidance documents a narrower monitoring scope than CrystalDiskInfo for the Windows feature described there. Windows and CrystalDiskInfo can therefore disagree without either program necessarily miscalculating the data it can access.

Worked examples: what should each result mean?

Example Interpretation Next action
HDD with 05 raw value of 0, C5 of 0, and C6 of 0 No sectors are currently reported in those three principal warning attributes. Continue monitoring and maintain backups; do not treat zero values as a guarantee of health.
HDD with a nonzero 05 that is stable The drive has experienced a media problem and used spare sectors, but one value alone does not establish an immediate failure date. Back up important data, record the value, monitor the trend, and plan replacement for important workloads.
HDD with rising C5 or C6 The drive is showing unresolved or uncorrectable read problems. Back up or clone immediately and replace the drive; avoid destructive testing first.
NVMe with Critical Warning = 0 and Percentage Used = 12 No standardized critical warning is reported, while the vendor estimates approximately 12 percent of designed life has been consumed. Check Available Spare, temperature, errors, model documentation, and backups; do not call 12 percent “remaining life.”
NVMe with a nonzero Critical Warning An active health condition may involve spare capacity, temperature, reliability, or read-only operation. Back up immediately, inspect the individual warning bits and manufacturer utility, and prepare for replacement.
USB drive with Unknown or missing SMART data The bridge or enclosure may not pass the necessary commands, or the drive may not be fully supported. Try a direct supported connection or another enclosure and cross-check with the manufacturer’s tool.
SSD with a low vendor-specific health percentage but no errors The value may represent endurance consumed or a manufacturer-specific estimate rather than imminent failure. Read the model’s documentation and consider workload, warranty, endurance, errors, and backup status before replacing it solely because of the percentage.

Is CrystalDiskInfo safe to use?

Reading SMART information in CrystalDiskInfo is ordinarily a monitoring operation, not a benchmark or destructive disk test. Download the installer, ZIP edition, or other release from the official Crystal Dew World download page. The program does not repair bad sectors, recover files, or make a failing drive safe.

Does CrystalDiskInfo repair bad sectors?

No. CrystalDiskInfo reports and interprets health information; it is not a data-recovery or physical bad-sector-repair utility. A filesystem repair may correct logical directory or metadata problems, but it cannot promise to restore unreliable physical media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a drive marked Caution still work?

Yes. A drive marked “Caution” may continue operating, but the warning means a monitored condition crossed a configured threshold. Back up important data immediately, identify the triggering attribute, and avoid relying on the drive for unique files while planning replacement.

Can a drive marked Good still fail?

Yes. “Good” means that no configured warning condition was detected in the health data currently exposed to CrystalDiskInfo. SMART monitoring cannot guarantee that every sector, file, cable, controller, firmware component, or electronic component will remain reliable.

Why does an SSD show 90% or 95% health?

The SSD is probably reporting a vendor-defined endurance or lifetime estimate. The percentage is not a universal probability of failure or a guaranteed amount of time remaining; interpret the value using the exact model’s documentation and other health fields.

Why does CrystalDiskInfo show Unknown?

“Unknown” usually means CrystalDiskInfo is not receiving usable SMART or NVMe health data, or the drive and controller combination is not fully supported. Check the USB bridge, RAID configuration, drivers, firmware, direct connection, and manufacturer diagnostic utility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reset or hide a CrystalDiskInfo warning?

No. Resetting, clearing, or hiding a SMART warning does not repair the drive or remove the underlying history. Restore default health-status settings, preserve the SMART evidence, back up the data, and investigate the cause.

The Bottom Line

CrystalDiskInfo is trustworthy as a reader of the SMART and NVMe data that your storage device exposes, but its color label is not a guarantee of future reliability. Treat Caution or Bad as a backup-and-investigate event, pay attention to the specific attribute and its trend, and replace a drive showing persistent or worsening errors. Treat Good as permission to keep monitoring—not as permission to stop backing up.
