Yes—Google owns the CloudReady lineage. Google acquired Neverware, CloudReady’s developer, in 2020. In 2022, Google folded CloudReady’s technology into ChromeOS Flex, its free-to-download operating system for compatible PCs and Macs. That makes CloudReady a predecessor to ChromeOS Flex, not a separate Google product that is still being developed.

If you are deciding what to install today, ChromeOS Flex is the relevant path. You can test it from a USB drive before replacing Windows or macOS, while organizations can manage Flex devices alongside ChromeOS hardware through the Google Admin console when the appropriate Enterprise or Education Upgrade is assigned.

Is CloudReady part of Google now?

CloudReady is part of Google’s operating-system history through the 2020 acquisition of Neverware, but the CloudReady name is no longer the current product direction. Google introduced ChromeOS Flex as the successor that carries CloudReady’s core idea—turning older computers into secure, cloud-focused devices.

Google Cloud’s 2022 announcement explained the acquisition this way: “To help even more organizations adopt a modern computing solution, Google acquired Neverware in 2020.” The company’s ChromeOS history document records the same transition and identifies ChromeOS Flex as the next stage of the technology.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

So the precise answer depends on what “part of Google” means:

  • Ownership: Yes. Google acquired Neverware, the company behind CloudReady.
  • Current product: No. CloudReady is not a separate, current Google-branded operating system.
  • Technology lineage: Yes. CloudReady’s technology was incorporated into ChromeOS Flex.

What happened to Neverware and CloudReady?

Neverware built CloudReady to give schools, companies and individuals a Chromebook-like experience on existing Windows PCs and Macs. Its approach was based on ChromiumOS, the open-source foundation associated with ChromeOS, rather than on Google’s OEM-delivered ChromeOS image.

Google’s history document quotes Neverware director Andrew Bauer describing the original problem: organizations needed a way to repurpose aging hardware running outdated or unsupported operating systems into “fast, secure devices with unified management.” That use case—extending a computer’s useful life without buying a Chromebook—became the basis for Google’s Flex strategy.

Year Event Why it matters
2011 Neverware founded The company that would create CloudReady was established.
2015 CloudReady launched CloudReady became available as a ChromiumOS-based system for compatible PCs and Macs.
2020 Google acquired Neverware Google obtained the company and CloudReady technology.
2022 CloudReady integrated into ChromeOS Flex Google introduced Flex as the successor and planned free upgrades for existing CloudReady customers when the stable release arrived.

The 2022 transition is the key date for users. It changed the practical question from “Is Google going to buy CloudReady?” to “Should I use ChromeOS Flex instead of an old CloudReady installation?”

Is CloudReady the same as ChromeOS Flex?

No. They are closely related, but ChromeOS Flex is Google’s successor product, with Google-controlled release and management arrangements. CloudReady was Neverware’s product before and around the acquisition; Flex is the current Google offering for installing ChromeOS-like software on existing computers.

Can I still install CloudReady?

For a new installation, use ChromeOS Flex rather than looking for a current standalone CloudReady release. Existing CloudReady systems may continue to boot, but Google’s announced product direction and customer upgrade path point to Flex.

Google describes Flex as “a new, free-to-download operating system from Google.” The normal workflow lets you test the system without immediately erasing the computer, then install it only after checking that the machine’s hardware works as expected.

What you need

  • A compatible Windows PC or Mac. Use Google’s current certified-device information because support varies by model and can change.
  • A USB flash drive suitable for creating bootable installation media. The installer will normally erase the drive.
  • A second computer or a working operating system from which to download the official Flex image and create the USB, if the target machine cannot do that itself.
  • A backup of documents, photos, browser data and any files on the target computer. Installing Flex can replace the existing operating system.
  • Access to the target computer’s boot-selection controls. The exact key or firmware menu differs by manufacturer.

How to test ChromeOS Flex from USB

  1. Check the model first. Find the exact manufacturer and model number, then compare it with Google’s current ChromeOS Flex certified-device information. A model that is not listed may still boot, but Google’s support expectation is clearest for certified hardware.
  2. Prepare the installer. Follow Google’s current ChromeOS Flex installation instructions to download the image and create bootable USB media. Confirm the USB drive’s required capacity in those instructions immediately before creating it, because requirements can change.
  3. Back up the target computer. Copy anything you need to external storage or a cloud service. The test boot should not require an installation, but the later install step can remove the existing operating system.
  4. Boot from the USB drive. Insert the drive, restart the PC or Mac and open its boot menu or firmware settings. Choose the USB device rather than the internal disk; the key and menu wording depend on the manufacturer.
  5. Run the live test. Use the USB session to check Wi-Fi, trackpad or mouse, keyboard, display, audio, camera, sleep and any peripherals that matter to your work. A device that starts is not necessarily fully supported.
  6. Install only after testing. If the hardware and workflow are acceptable, choose the installation option shown by the Flex installer. Read the erase warning carefully before confirming.
  7. Reconnect and update. After installation, connect to the internet, sign in with the intended account and allow the system to complete its initial update and setup process.

For a managed school or business fleet, test a representative sample of each hardware model before deploying widely. A USB trial can reveal driver or peripheral problems that a specification sheet will not.

What hardware does ChromeOS Flex support?

ChromeOS Flex is designed for existing PCs and Macs, but “old computer” is not a compatibility guarantee. Google maintains certified-device information because support depends on the exact model, firmware and components.

Certification is especially important for organizations that need predictable updates and a supported configuration. On an uncertified model, the system may install successfully while a particular feature—such as wireless networking, audio, camera or sleep—works imperfectly. Treat the certification status as a decision point, not an optional afterthought.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When an older computer is a good candidate

  • The model appears on Google’s current certified-device list.
  • The computer has enough memory and storage for the organization’s browser-based workload.
  • Important peripherals work during the USB test.
  • The device has firmware that allows booting from external media.
  • The owner accepts that installing Flex may remove the previous operating system and its locally installed applications.

When to keep the existing system or buy a Chromebook

  • You depend on desktop software that requires Windows or macOS and has no web equivalent.
  • A required device or peripheral fails during the USB test.
  • The hardware is not certified and the cost of troubleshooting is higher than the value of extending its life.
  • You need the predictable, manufacturer-tested experience of a Chromebook rather than a converted PC or Mac.

How are ChromeOS Flex updates and management handled?

ChromeOS Flex uses Google’s ChromeOS management approach rather than the old Neverware administration model. Google says Flex devices can be managed alongside ChromeOS devices in the Google Admin console when an organization has Chrome Enterprise or Chrome Education Upgrade.

Google’s early ChromeOS Flex announcement described the Admin console as providing more than 600 policies and controls. That figure is associated with the 2022 announcement; administrators should check the current console and licensing terms for the controls available to their edition.

For a personal computer, management enrollment is optional. For a school or company, administrators should decide enrollment, user-account policy, update controls and device permissions before installation. The organization also needs to verify current pricing and eligibility for the relevant upgrade, since those commercial terms are not fixed by the operating-system download itself.

What happened to existing CloudReady customers?

Google announced that existing CloudReady customers would be upgraded to ChromeOS Flex for free when the stable version became available. The promise addressed the transition from Neverware’s product to Google’s successor rather than creating a permanently separate CloudReady branch.

The practical result is that an organization with CloudReady-era deployments should plan around Flex documentation, certified hardware and Google Admin console requirements. Keep an inventory of devices, confirm each model’s status and schedule a pilot before changing a large fleet.

Why did Google create ChromeOS Flex?

Flex extends the Chromebook-style operating model to hardware an organization already owns. That can reduce replacement pressure, simplify a mixed fleet and give older computers a cloud-first interface instead of leaving them on an unsupported operating system.

It is not a universal upgrade for every computer. The value is highest when the workload is primarily browser-based, the hardware passes compatibility checks and the organization benefits from centralized administration. If a user needs specialized local software, a conventional Windows or macOS installation may remain the better fit.

How should I choose between CloudReady history, ChromeOS Flex and ChromeOS?

Use this decision framework:

  1. Replacing an operating system on an existing PC or Mac: evaluate ChromeOS Flex.
  2. Managing converted computers and Chromebooks together: evaluate Flex with the appropriate Chrome Enterprise or Education Upgrade.
  3. Buying new hardware with the simplest supported ChromeOS setup: choose a Chromebook model whose specifications and support period meet your needs.
  4. Maintaining an old CloudReady installation: treat it as a migration project and test the corresponding device on ChromeOS Flex.

What can go wrong during a Flex installation?

The computer ignores the USB drive

Recreate the bootable media using Google’s current instructions, try another USB port and open the manufacturer’s boot menu instead of relying on the normal internal-disk startup. If the drive still does not appear, check firmware settings and the model’s documented boot procedure.

Wi-Fi, audio or the camera does not work

Stay in the USB test session and record exactly which component fails. Recheck the certified-device entry for the exact model, not merely the product family. If a required component remains unreliable, do not erase the existing operating system.

The installer warns that data will be erased

Stop and verify the target disk and your backups. Flex installation is a replacement operation, so a successful install does not preserve local Windows or macOS applications and files unless you copied them elsewhere.

The organization cannot manage the device

Confirm that the device was enrolled in the intended organizational account and that the organization has the required Chrome Enterprise or Education Upgrade. Personal Google-account sign-in and managed enrollment are different setup paths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Google buy CloudReady or Neverware?

Google bought Neverware in 2020; Neverware was the company that developed CloudReady. The acquisition therefore brought CloudReady’s technology into Google, rather than Google purchasing a separate company called CloudReady.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is ChromeOS Flex free to download for home use?

Google announced ChromeOS Flex as a free-to-download operating system for compatible PCs and Macs. Optional enterprise or education management upgrades are separate from downloading and trying the operating system.

Will ChromeOS Flex make my old laptop exactly like a Chromebook?

Not necessarily. Flex can provide a similar cloud-first experience, but hardware drivers, firmware and available features differ between converted computers and purpose-built Chromebooks. Test the machine from USB and check its exact certification before installing.

Can a school manage Flex computers and Chromebooks together?

Yes, Google says both can be managed in the Google Admin console when the organization uses the relevant Chrome Enterprise or Chrome Education Upgrade. Administrators should verify current licensing and policy availability for their edition.
