IRONMAN cutoff times, transition procedures, and equipment rules vary by event and season. The current athlete guide for your race—not a general IRONMAN figure—sets the schedule, timing basis, checkpoints, and procedures you must follow.

What are the IRONMAN cutoff times?

There is no single cutoff schedule that applies to every IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3. A race may enforce separate swim, cumulative swim-and-bike, and overall limits, as well as intermediate course checkpoints. The clock may be based on your individual start or another reference stated in the guide. Aid-station stops and transitions can count toward elapsed time.

These official event-page and guide figures show how schedules differ; they are examples, not promises for another race:

Event and distance Swim cutoff Cumulative bike cutoff Overall cutoff Timing and checkpoints
IRONMAN 70.3 Alghero 1 hour 10 minutes 5 hours 30 minutes for swim + T1 + bike 8 hours 30 minutes The race-week page presents these as cutoffs; its timing basis and intermediate checkpoint details should be checked in the current guide. IRONMAN 70.3 Alghero race-week page
Full-distance IRONMAN Alghero 2 hours 20 minutes 10 hours through swim + T1 + bike 17 hours Example figures on the same race-week page; use the event guide for the applicable schedule. IRONMAN 70.3 Alghero race-week page
Full-distance IRONMAN Chattanooga, 2024 Separate swim limit Separate bike limit 16 hours 30 minutes from the swim-start timing mat The 2024 guide also lists intermediate bike and run checkpoints. Aid-station stops and transitions count in total elapsed time. 2024 Chattanooga athlete guide

The Alghero race-week page does not show a publication date in the source material; its figures are presented as examples and should not be treated as current for a future edition without checking the current guide. The 2024 Chattanooga limit is specific to that event and year.

For another illustration of timing differences, the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 Tours guide says its times are calculated from each athlete’s individual start time, not the gun start. It also allows officials to remove an athlete if, based on location, time, and average speed, they determine the athlete cannot finish a discipline before its cutoff. Passing the final event cutoff is therefore not the only consideration. 2025 Tours athlete guide

How long do you have to finish an IRONMAN?

Use the overall cutoff printed in your event’s current athlete guide, and read what starts that clock. The examples above range from 16 hours 30 minutes at 2024 Chattanooga to 17 hours on the Alghero full-distance race-week page; neither establishes a universal full-distance limit. The Alghero 70.3 page gives an 8-hour-30-minute total example, likewise not a universal 70.3 limit.

Look for the swim cutoff, cumulative bike cutoff, overall cutoff, intermediate checkpoints, and whether your clock begins at your own start time or another stated reference. At Chattanooga in 2024, the guide says transition and aid-station time counted toward total elapsed time. Its guidance explains the safety rationale: “Based on permits for the roads on the course and the safety of athletes involved, cut-off times must be respected for all IRONMAN events.” 2024 Chattanooga athlete guide

What happens in T1 and T2?

  • T1 is the transition from swim to bike.
  • T2 is the transition from bike to run.

The transition map, gear-bag system, and route through the area are event-specific. The 2025 Tours guide, for example, describes athletes collecting a bag, changing, returning gear to the assigned bag location, taking the bike, and proceeding to the transition exit. Follow the sequence and locations in your own guide rather than assuming every race uses this layout. 2025 Tours athlete guide

At Tours, athletes must close the helmet chin strap and wait to mount until beyond the marked line at the bike-park exit. Other guides can specify different layouts or transition-closing procedures. For example, the 2024 Chattanooga guide specified T1 closure 20 minutes after its swim cutoff and T2 closure 10 minutes after its bike cutoff; those intervals are not general IRONMAN rules. 2024 Chattanooga athlete guide

Can you wear a wetsuit in an IRONMAN?

Wetsuit eligibility depends on the event’s conditions and applicable rules for that season. In the 2025 Tours guide, wetsuits may be worn at water temperatures up to and including 24.6°C and are mandatory below 16°C under that event’s stated rules. Those thresholds should not be assumed to apply to another race or edition. Check the current event guide for the temperature decision, permitted swimwear, and wetsuit construction requirements. 2025 Tours athlete guide

The Tours guide allows goggles or facemasks but prohibits fins, gloves, paddles, flotation devices such as pull buoys, and snorkels. It also says athletes must not wear a race bib during the swim. Treat these as that guide’s instructions, and verify your own event’s current equipment rules before race day. 2025 Tours athlete guide

What happens if you miss an IRONMAN cutoff?

A cutoff or intermediate checkpoint can end your race before the overall finish deadline. The applicable guide sets the checkpoints and officials’ procedures. At 2025 Tours, officials reserve the right to remove athletes when their position, elapsed time, and average speed indicate they cannot finish the discipline before its cutoff. Do not assume you can continue simply because the final event cutoff has not passed. 2025 Tours athlete guide

Relay teams

The IRONMAN 70.3 Nice FAQ says relay members exchange the timing chip in the relay zone. It also says that if a member misses the swim or bike cutoff, the whole team is recorded as DNF and may not continue; relay teams follow the same cutoffs as individual athletes. That is Nice FAQ guidance, so relay teams should confirm the current policy and handoff procedure for their event. IRONMAN 70.3 Nice FAQ

Which rules should you check before race day?

For basic equipment and transition requirements, the 2025 Tours guide says the helmet strap must be fastened before riding and athletes must not mount before the marked line. Its swim-aid restrictions and wetsuit conditions are described above. The exact provisions can change by event and season, so use the event-specific guide alongside the applicable competition rules.

IRONMAN’s rules page says the 2026 Competition Rules take effect for events after March 2, 2026. Its page summary identifies updates involving professional-athlete bike draft zones, equipment specifications, and Para Open Division terminology; consult the linked full rules, modifications summary, and FAQs for exact provisions rather than inferring details from that summary.
