For most listeners buying a device in 2026, an iPhone is the better choice: it is part of Apple’s current product lineup and supports music alongside communication, apps and other everyday tasks. Choose a used seventh-generation iPod touch instead if you specifically want music separated from your phone, a built-in headphone jack and a device rated for up to 40 hours of music playback—and you are comfortable buying discontinued hardware.
Is an iPod better than an iPhone for listening to music?
Neither wins for everyone. An iPhone is more practical as an all-purpose, current device; an iPod touch can be a better dedicated player when keeping music away from phone notifications matters more than having new hardware and current software.
There is also an important difference in what you can buy: Apple discontinued the iPod touch in May 2022 and sold remaining stock only while supplies lasted. In 2026, an iPod is therefore a used- or refurbished-market purchase, not a current Apple retail option. Apple identifies iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and HomePod as products that carry forward the iPod music experience.
“iPod” can mean several generations of devices. The comparison here focuses on the final model, the seventh-generation iPod touch, because it is the iPod model in the supplied evidence that supports Apple Music. Older iPod models differ, and the findings about Apple Music should not be applied to them automatically.

How do the iPod touch and iPhone compare for music?
The deciding trade-off is separation versus versatility. The iPod touch’s built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack and stated music-playback rating are specific advantages, while the iPhone combines listening with the functions of a current smartphone.
| What matters | Seventh-generation iPod touch | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Buying new | Discontinued in May 2022; used or refurbished availability depends on sellers and stock. | Current Apple product; model and local availability vary. |
| Apple Music | Supports Apple Music. Streaming and downloads are available on supported models; the device is discontinued. | Apple Music streaming and downloads are available; current software support depends on the iPhone model. |
| Local playback and formats | Supports local playback and lists AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, FLAC, Dolby Digital and Audible formats in Apple’s technical specifications. | Not established here as a single value; capabilities depend on model, software and playback method. |
| Music battery rating | Apple rates it for up to 40 hours of music playback. That is a published rating, not a guarantee for a used unit. | Varies by model and use; no directly comparable figure is established here. |
| Headphones and connector | Has a Lightning connector and a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack. | Connector and wired-headphone options vary by model and accessories. |
| Storage and software age | The final model dates to 2019; MacRumors reports up to 256GB of storage. It is older hardware, and current software support should be checked for the specific unit. | Storage and software support depend on the model. New iPhones belong to Apple’s current product lineup. |
| Cellular communication | Not a cellular phone; it does not replace an iPhone for cellular calls or mobile data. | A phone with cellular communication; service and features depend on model, carrier and plan. |
| Distraction | A separate music device can help keep listening apart from phone notifications and social apps. | Music shares a device with communication and other apps, which may be convenient or distracting. |
| Total cost | Used-device prices vary. Factor in condition and any needed accessories; live prices are not established here. | Depends on the iPhone model and whether you already own one. Live prices and accessory costs vary. |
Can you still use an iPod touch for Apple Music?
Yes: the seventh-generation iPod touch supports Apple Music, as well as local music playback. That makes it a genuine option for someone who wants a separate Apple Music player, but it does not make every older iPod compatible with the service.
Apple’s technical specifications list AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, FLAC, Dolby Digital and Audible among the supported audio formats for the final iPod touch. Apple also lists both Lightning and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, so wired headphones with a standard plug can connect directly. Confirm the precise device and condition before buying, especially when a seller’s listing uses “iPod” without identifying the generation.

Streaming and downloading are different use cases: streaming depends on an internet connection, while downloaded music is stored for offline playback. The device’s support for Apple Music does not establish that every software feature or service detail will remain available indefinitely on discontinued hardware. Check the unit’s software and service access before relying on it as your only music player.
How does battery life compare?
Apple rates the seventh-generation iPod touch for up to 40 hours of music playback. “Up to” is a manufacturer rating, not a promise about every listening session, and it is especially important not to treat it as a guarantee when shopping for a used device.

- Long battery life - half volume via wired earbuds for 25 hours music playback, 1250 mAh capacity balancing excellent convenice and function.
- Portable mp3 player - MP3 has 64 gram(2.26 oz) equivalent to 8 dollar coins, shap as a pock card.
- Formats supported - MP3, OGG, MAV, FLAC, AMR, MID, AAC, APE, etc. Compatible with ROCKBOX system by the way, what an awesome MP3 it is 🙂
- Video function - Video of 720p can be played smoothly, supproted formats inclued MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, FLV, 3GP.
A used iPod’s actual endurance depends on its battery’s condition. Because the model has been discontinued for years, a listing’s original specification cannot tell you how long that particular unit will last today. Ask the seller about battery condition and returns, and avoid assuming a used iPod will match the original rating. iPhone battery life also varies by model and usage, so the available evidence does not support a like-for-like endurance winner across all iPhones.
Which device is better if you want fewer distractions?
A separate iPod touch is the more direct choice if the goal is to keep music physically apart from a phone used for messages, calls and social apps. It does not make a listener immune to distraction, but it lets them leave the phone behind while carrying a dedicated player.
That separation is the iPod’s central modern appeal. The Associated Press reported renewed interest in used iPods for distraction-free listening in 2026, while noting that new iPods are no longer sold and that later iPod touch models can stream Apple Music. An iPhone remains the simpler option if carrying two devices would be inconvenient or if the listener wants music and phone functions together.
What are the trade-offs of buying a used iPod touch?
The seventh-generation iPod touch can offer a headphone jack and a music-focused device, but buying used means evaluating the actual unit rather than relying on an original product specification. Apple ended the line, so available condition, seller terms and stock differ from one listing to another.
Check before you buy
- Confirm the generation. Look for an explicitly identified seventh-generation iPod touch. Do not assume an older iPod supports Apple Music just because the listing mentions music playback.
- Ask about battery condition. Apple’s up-to-40-hour figure is a rating for the model, not a measurement of the used unit in front of you.
- Verify software and service access. The device is discontinued, so check that the specific unit can access the services and features you need before making it your primary player.
- Inspect the connectors and included accessories. The device has Lightning and a 3.5 mm jack, but a used listing may not include cables, headphones or other accessories.
- Review the seller’s return terms and condition description. Live inventory, seller quality and battery health vary; they cannot be inferred from the model’s original specifications.
Storage is another practical consideration. MacRumors reports that the final iPod touch was released in 2019, used an A10 Fusion chip, had a 4-inch display and was available with up to 256GB of storage. Those are final-model details, not a guarantee that every used listing has the same capacity; check the unit’s actual storage before purchase.

Should you buy an iPod or use your iPhone?
Choose an iPhone if
- You want one current device for music, communication, apps, navigation and streaming.
- Apple Music downloads and streaming matter more than separating music from phone activity.
- You are buying new within Apple’s current product lineup.
Choose a used seventh-generation iPod touch if
- You specifically want music physically separated from your phone to reduce notifications and social-media distraction.
- The built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack or the model’s published up-to-40-hour music rating is useful to you.
- You accept discontinued hardware, older software, a used-device purchase and uncertain battery health.
Apple’s 2022 announcement said Apple Music had “more than 90 million songs and over 30,000 playlists.” Those figures describe Apple’s statement in 2022, not a current catalog count. The same announcement quoted Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, saying: “Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music.” That is Apple’s own promotional statement, not an independent comparison of sound quality between an iPod and an iPhone.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn short, buy an iPhone for the current all-in-one experience. Consider a used seventh-generation iPod touch only when its separation from a phone is the feature you value enough to accept the age and uncertainty of discontinued hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Apple stop making the iPod?
Apple’s May 2022 announcement marked the end of iPod availability after remaining stock sold out and described the music experience as continuing across its other products. The announcement does not establish one specific reason for discontinuing the line.
Is Apple’s 2022 Apple Music song count still current?
No current catalog total is established by that announcement. Treat its song and playlist figures as a dated statement from 2022, not a live count.
What should I do if an iPod listing does not say which generation it is?
Ask the seller to identify the model before buying and confirm that it is the seventh-generation iPod touch if Apple Music support is essential. If the seller cannot establish the model, do not assume it meets that requirement.
