If an Indian IPO allotment is not visible, first identify the registrar’s recorded result. A “no allotment” result normally means an ASBA or UPI block must be released, not that a conventional refund cheque is due. SEBI says the application money remains in your bank account as a block, continues to earn interest, and is debited only to the extent of any shares allotted. Partial allotment therefore produces a debit for the allotted shares and release of the excess. Use the registrar for the result, the bank or bid-submitting intermediary for an overdue block or a missing UPI mandate, and SCORES only after giving the responsible entity a documented chance to resolve the problem.

What does “IPO allotment not received” actually mean?

The phrase can describe four different outcomes: no shares were allotted, only part of the bid was allotted, shares were allotted but have not reached the demat account, or the bid was rejected or never became valid. The remedy depends on which record the issue registrar shows and whether money is blocked, debited, or already released.

Under ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount), the bank places a lien on the application amount in your account rather than transferring it to the issuer at application time. SEBI’s investor explanation says, “Blocked amount continues to earn interest and there is no requirement of refund in case of non-allotment.” Read that statement as an explanation of the ASBA mechanism; a different payment arrangement can have different mechanics. See SEBI’s ASBA investor guidance.

Registrar outcome Money position to verify Correct first action
No allotment Full application amount should be unblocked; it should not remain as an overdue lien. Confirm the result with the registrar, then ask the bank or submitting intermediary to release any remaining hold.
Partial allotment Only the allotted amount should be debited; the balance should be released. Compare the debit with the registrar’s quantity and escalate an excess block.
Allotted, but shares absent from demat The relevant amount is normally debited; this is not a refund case. Raise a non-credit grievance with the registrar and the broker or depository intermediary using the DP ID and Client ID.
Rejected or invalid bid A block does not prove that the bid was valid or eligible for allocation. Request the precise rejection reason from the registrar or bid-submitting intermediary and check PAN, bank and demat details.

The registrar named in the offer document is the authoritative place to check the issue-specific application or allotment record. NSE says its PAN-based bid-verification facility checks bid data, not final allotment, and that bid data becomes available six days after issue closure. Do not treat an early absence from that facility as proof of rejection or non-allotment. See the NSE e-IPO investor FAQ.

How do I check an IPO result before asking for a refund?

Check the issue record first, then trace the money. This prevents a valid allotment, an invalid bid, and an overdue bank hold from being reported as the same problem.

  1. Find the official registrar. Use the registrar named in the issue’s offer materials, not a link sent by an unknown caller or message. Enter the application details requested on that registrar’s official status page.
  2. Record the exact result. Save the status showing no allotment, a quantity allotted, rejection or invalidity, or an unavailable result. Note the application number and the time you checked.
  3. Match the applicant identity. Confirm the PAN, applicant name, demat account (DP ID and Client ID), bid quantity and price, and the bank account or UPI ID used. A mismatch can make a bid invalid even when an amount was blocked.
  4. Check the bank or UPI record. Look for a lien, blocked amount, debit, release, or a mandate that is still pending. A bank statement or mandate screen is stronger evidence than a remembered balance.
  5. Compare the dates with the issue timetable. Use the published closing day and the issue’s allotment and listing schedule. The legal deadlines are working-day milestones, so do not convert them to calendar dates without checking holidays.

If the registrar’s site cannot locate the application, contact the intermediary through which the bid was submitted and ask it to confirm whether the bid reached the exchange and registrar. Keep screenshots and acknowledgment numbers for any later complaint.

What should I do when there is no allotment and the amount is still blocked?

There is normally no separate “refund” to wait for: the bank should remove the ASBA or UPI block. Ask the bank or submitting member to investigate an overdue hold while the registrar confirms the no-allotment record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download or save the registrar result showing non-allotment.
  2. Write to the bank or SCSB (Self Certified Syndicate Bank), or to the broker or other member that submitted the UPI bid. State the IPO name, application number, PAN, blocked amount and issue dates.
  3. Ask for the current lien or mandate status, the reason it remains, and the date by which the bank will release it. Request a written reference number.
  4. Send the same evidence to the registrar if its result or application identity is unclear. The registrar can confirm whether the application was rejected, non-allotted or recorded under different details; it cannot substitute for the bank’s release operation.
  5. Check the account again after the stated action and keep the bank’s confirmation. If the hold remains beyond the applicable schedule, proceed to a formal complaint rather than paying anyone who offers to “process” a refund.

Do not close the bank account, revoke every mandate, or submit a second payment merely because the balance appears reduced. Those actions can remove useful evidence or create a second transaction without releasing the original hold.

What if I received only a partial allotment?

Partial allotment should produce a debit for the shares actually allotted and release of the excess application money. Compare the registrar’s allotted quantity and amount with the bank’s debit and remaining lien.

  • If the debit equals the allotted amount and the excess is released, the money flow is consistent with ASBA.
  • If the entire bid amount is still blocked, give the registrar result and bank statement to the SCSB or submitting intermediary and ask for correction of the excess hold.
  • If the debit exceeds the allotted amount, ask the bank to identify each debit or lien entry and ask the registrar to confirm the payable allotment amount.

Keep the issue’s basis-of-allotment communication. It helps distinguish an allocation calculation from a bank-processing error.

What should I do if shares were allotted but are missing from my demat account?

Missing demat credit is a securities-credit grievance, not a refund request. First verify that the registrar shows an allotment for the same PAN and application, then compare its DP ID and Client ID with your demat statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the registrar’s allotment advice or status screen and the demat statement covering the expected credit date.
  2. Check every character of the DP ID and Client ID supplied in the bid. A wrong account identifier can send the issue into a non-credit investigation.
  3. Contact the registrar using the non-credit grievance route in the offer document, attaching the allotment record and demat evidence.
  4. Notify the broker, depository participant or other intermediary that accepted the application. Ask it to verify the account details transmitted with the bid and to provide a complaint number.
  5. Do not ask the bank to “refund” the amount solely because the shares are absent. The amount may have been correctly debited for a valid allotment while the credit exception is being resolved.

SEBI-hosted offer documents commonly list non-credit of allotted shares as a specific grievance category. Follow the particular issue’s registrar instructions for file formats and identifiers; do not publish complete PAN, bank-account or demat numbers on a public forum.

What if the UPI mandate never arrived?

A missing mandate is a pre-allotment problem: no valid UPI authorization means the bid may never have become payable. NSE directs investors to check the UPI status and contact the member through which the bid was placed.

  1. Check the UPI application’s mandate or pending-requests area and the bank account linked to the UPI ID. Confirm that you are looking at the same UPI ID entered in the IPO bid.
  2. Ask the bid-submitting broker or member whether it received an exchange acceptance and whether the mandate was generated, rejected or expired.
  3. Provide the application number, PAN, UPI ID (mask sensitive portions in ordinary email), bid quantity and the time of submission.
  4. If the issue is still open, ask the member whether a permitted re-initiation is available. NSE describes limited member-side re-initiation during the issue period; it is not a self-service step to perform after the offer has closed.
  5. After closure, wait for the registrar’s recorded outcome and pursue any money or validity issue through the member and registrar rather than trying to approve a late mandate.

A UPI app showing no request does not by itself prove that the exchange rejected the bid. The submitting member can see the bid and mandate state that an investor cannot infer from the app alone.

Why can an IPO application be rejected or marked invalid?

A blocked amount is not evidence that an application satisfied every allocation rule. Ask for the exact recorded reason instead of assuming that non-allotment was caused by oversubscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SEBI’s 2023 framework identifies a mismatch between the PAN on the bank account and the PAN on the demat account as an invalidity ground. SEBI investor guidance also warns that a third-party bank account or UPI ID is not considered for allocation. See SEBI circular SEBI/HO/CFD/TPD1/CIR/P/2023/140 and the SEBI ASBA guidance.

  • Request the registrar or submitting intermediary to state whether the issue was PAN mismatch, third-party payment details, duplicate or otherwise invalid bid, or another recorded reason.
  • Check that the bank account and demat account belong to the applicant named in the application.
  • Ask how and when any block will be removed. An invalid bid can still leave a technical hold that needs bank-side action.
  • For a future issue, correct the identity or account relationship before placing another bid; do not try to cure a closed issue by sending money to a different account.

What is the IPO refund and unblocking timeline under T+3?

For public issues opening on or after December 1, 2023, SEBI made listing within T+3 working days mandatory. Here, T is the issue-closing day, not the day you placed your bid. The circular’s schedule is indicative for processing milestones, so use the particular offer’s published timetable.

Milestone Indicative timing What to check
Issue closes T Record the closing date and the issue calendar, including market holidays.
Basis of allotment approved T+1 working day Look for the registrar’s allotment or rejection record.
Unblocking completed Before 4 p.m. on T+2 working day in the indicative schedule Check whether the lien or UPI block has disappeared and whether any allotted amount was debited.
Trading begins T+3 working day Use the exchange and issue timetable; this is not a promise that every bank display updates simultaneously.

The dates above come from the August 9, 2023 SEBI circular. They are working-day calculations. A weekend or market holiday between T and T+3 changes the calendar date, and an issue’s own published schedule controls operational expectations.

When can delayed unblocking lead to compensation?

Delay and compensation are separate findings. First establish that the block was overdue and identify the entity responsible; then check the rule and offer-document terms that apply to that issue.

SEBI’s 2023 circular changed the computation start for delayed ASBA unblocking to T+3. An older T+6-era explanation should not be used as the current universal deadline. The March 16, 2021 UPI grievance framework describes specified bank and post-issue lead-manager cases at ₹100 per day or 15% per annum of the relevant application amount, whichever is higher. The later T+3 change affects when the delay is counted. See the linked SEBI circular and verify the issue’s offer document before claiming a figure.

Some offer documents use their own two- or three-working-day wording for particular compensation situations. Do not turn one issue’s clause into a rule for every IPO. In a written complaint, state the closing date, the date unblocking should have completed under the applicable schedule, the date it actually occurred (or that it is still blocked), the amount affected and the evidence for each date.

How do I complain to the bank, registrar or broker?

Start with the entity that controls the disputed record, and make the request specific. A dated written complaint creates a traceable record before any regulatory escalation.

  1. Choose the responsible entity. Use the registrar for allotment, rejection and non-credit records; the SCSB or bank for an ASBA lien; and the broker or other bid-submitting member for a UPI mandate or transmission problem.
  2. Describe one issue clearly. State whether you seek confirmation of allotment, release of a full or excess block, correction of a debit, or investigation of missing shares.
  3. Attach identifiers and evidence. Include the IPO name, application or acknowledgment number, applicant name and PAN, DP ID and Client ID, bid quantity and amount, UPI ID or relevant bank-account details, issue dates, bank or mandate screenshots or statements, and earlier complaint references. Mask unnecessary digits when sending by ordinary email.
  4. Ask for a dated action. Request the recorded status, the reason for the exception, the action required from you, and a written completion date. Save the acknowledgment.
  5. Follow up once the promised date passes. Add the original reference and the new bank statement or registrar screen; do not start a disconnected complaint that omits the history.

A concise complaint can use this structure:

Subject: {{IPO_NAME}} — {{APPLICATION_NUMBER}} — {{PROBLEM}}
Applicant: {{APPLICANT_NAME}}; PAN: {{PAN}}
Bid amount and quantity: {{AMOUNT}} / {{QUANTITY}}
Issue closing date: {{CLOSING_DATE}}

How do I escalate an unresolved IPO grievance through SCORES?

Use SCORES after first complaining to the relevant bank, registrar, broker or other regulated entity. The complaint should identify a securities-market service failure and include the documents needed to investigate it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Submit the complaint at the official SCORES portal within one year of the cause of action. The operational FAQ was checked in October 2026.
  2. Upload the registrar result, bank or UPI evidence, issue timetable, correspondence and acknowledgment numbers. Remove unrelated personal data.
  3. Track the Action Taken Report (ATR). The current SCORES FAQ gives the entity 21 calendar days to submit it.
  4. If the ATR does not resolve the matter, request review within 15 calendar days of the ATR.
  5. Read the portal’s status and preserve the complaint number, submissions and review request.

An older SEBI investor overview refers to 30 days for an ATR, but the operational SCORES FAQ and SCORES 2.0 guidance state 21 calendar days. Use the current portal instruction and check it again when filing.

Can I use SMART ODR while a SCORES complaint is open?

NSE describes SMART ODR as a further dispute-resolution route, but it is not an independent second track to run indefinitely beside SCORES. Starting the same dispute in SMART ODR while a SCORES complaint is pending causes the SCORES complaint to be treated as disposed. Decide which route you are using, disclose the existing reference, and retain all records.

What mistakes delay release of an IPO mandate?

  • Calling every case a refund: a no-allotment ASBA case usually requires unblocking, while missing demat credit requires a non-credit investigation.
  • Contacting only the registrar about a bank lien: the registrar can confirm allocation, but the SCSB or bank performs the release.
  • Contacting only the UPI app: the bid-submitting member can see exchange and mandate records that the app view does not show.
  • Using calendar-day promises: T+1, T+2 and T+3 are working-day milestones tied to the issue calendar.
  • Assuming a block proves validity: PAN mismatches and third-party bank or UPI details can invalidate a bid.
  • Claiming compensation without dates: show the closing day, applicable T+3 calculation, actual release date and responsible entity.
  • Posting unredacted evidence publicly: send PAN, bank and demat details only through the official registrar, bank, intermediary or SCORES channel.
  • Paying a stranger to release funds: no legitimate intermediary needs a third-party payment to remove an ASBA or UPI hold.

What should I keep until the case is closed?

Retain the bid confirmation, mandate notification or absence of one, registrar status, basis-of-allotment notice, bank statement showing the lien or debit, demat statement, every complaint acknowledgment, and the final release or credit confirmation. Keep a simple chronology with dates and working-day calculations. If the issue is later reviewed by the bank, registrar, SCORES or an ODR process, the chronology lets each party see whether the dispute concerns allocation, validity, money movement or demat credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a blocked ASBA amount mean the money has left my bank account?

Not necessarily. ASBA keeps the application money in the bank account under a block or lien; the bank may reduce the immediately available balance even though the amount has not been finally debited. Compare the lien and ledger entries with the registrar’s allotment result rather than relying on the displayed available balance alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who can recreate a missing IPO UPI mandate after the issue closes?

An investor generally cannot create a valid late mandate independently after closure. Ask the member that submitted the bid what status it recorded; any permitted re-initiation is an issue-period member process, not a post-close self-service refund step.

What date starts the one-year SCORES filing period?

The SCORES FAQ measures one year from the cause of action. Record the date the promised release, credit or response should have occurred, and file before that period expires while attaching the earlier complaint reference.

Should I send my full PAN and demat number in a public social-media complaint?

No. Public posts can expose identity and account information without helping the investigation. Send the complete identifiers only through the registrar, bank, intermediary or SCORES channel, and mask unnecessary digits in screenshots shared elsewhere.
