How much storage should you buy for open-world games?
Buy 256GB when one demanding game is your main gaming use and you also need room for normal apps, photos and video. Use the phone’s remaining free space, rather than its nominal capacity, as your decision metric. iOS, photographs, downloaded video, messages, offline music and other apps all reduce what a game can use. A phone that is already close to full can fail an installation even when the game appears smaller than the remaining number because the installer may need temporary workspace.
512GB is for libraries and long ownership
512GB is most useful when you keep several large games installed at once, record or retain a lot of video, or intend to keep the phone through multiple years of content updates. 128GB can be workable if you play one title at a time, keep little media on the phone and are willing to remove games after finishing them. Genshin Impact shows the difference
The App Store listing for Genshin Impact shows 3.7GB. Apple’s listing was accessed October 29, 2026. HoYoverse’s current iOS requirements, however, call for at least 40GB of available storage and recommend 60GB available. Those figures are the ones to use when deciding whether a phone has enough room, not the 3.7GB store label.
The 40GB figure is a minimum free-space requirement; the 60GB figure is HoYoverse’s recommended allowance. Neither should be read as a permanent installed-size promise. A later update can change the amount of local space needed, which is why a phone that barely meets today’s number can become difficult to update.
Installation can need temporary workspace
Installation and post-installation footprints can differ in the other direction as well. A 2024 Rockstar Games Customer Support entry gives an example of approximately 3.8GB needed for a direct iOS installation and approximately 1.63GB after installation. The two numbers describe different stages: the larger amount covers the download and installation process, while the smaller amount is the retained footprint reported after installation.
Do not use either type of number as a universal rule for every game. Check the developer’s current system-requirements page, keep additional free space for updates, and expect the amount shown in iPhone Storage to change as optional assets are downloaded.

For a new purchase, prioritize a 256GB or 512GB configuration that leaves room for your actual library, then select a recent supported iPhone generation.
