Use a trusted Wi-Fi network when one is available and works for your device. Use iPhone Personal Hotspot when you need to get another device online through your iPhone’s cellular connection. They are not interchangeable ways to connect the iPhone: Wi-Fi joins an existing network, while Personal Hotspot shares cellular internet from the iPhone.

What’s the difference between iPhone Personal Hotspot and Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is the wireless connection your laptop, tablet, or phone uses to reach an existing network, such as a home router or a public access point. Personal Hotspot turns your iPhone into a local access point and routes connected devices’ internet traffic over the iPhone’s cellular service. It does not rebroadcast Wi-Fi that the iPhone itself has joined. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains how Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s internet connection.

That distinction helps settle the choice: if suitable, trusted Wi-Fi is available, connect directly to it. If it is not, and your iPhone has cellular service and a plan that supports Personal Hotspot, use the hotspot.

When should you use each connection?

Choose existing Wi-Fi when it is available

  • Use a trusted network that works for your device rather than routing the device through your iPhone’s cellular plan.
  • If the Wi-Fi network is unreliable or unavailable where you are, it may not be a practical option; check whether your iPhone has cellular service and hotspot access.

Choose Personal Hotspot when cellular access is the option you have

  • Use it to connect a laptop, tablet, or other device when no suitable Wi-Fi network is available.
  • Remember that the connected device’s activity uses the iPhone’s cellular connection. Check your plan and data usage before relying on it.

There is no universal speed, security, or reliability winner between ordinary Wi-Fi and hotspot. Results depend on the available network, cellular service, devices, and conditions; Apple’s guidance does not provide a controlled numeric comparison.

Check carrier support, fees, and device limits

Personal Hotspot is not available with every carrier. Extra fees may apply, and the number of devices that can connect at once depends on the carrier and iPhone model. Check your carrier’s terms and your iPhone’s cellular settings rather than assuming hotspot is included, unlimited, or subject to a particular device cap. Apple summarizes these qualifications in its Personal Hotspot setup guidance.

Connect a device to your iPhone hotspot

Apple documents three connection methods: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB for computers. For Apple devices eligible for Instant Hotspot through the same Apple Account or Family Sharing, a password may not be required. Other users and non-Apple devices can connect using the hotspot password or an appropriate wired or Bluetooth connection.

  1. Turn on Personal Hotspot: On iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Allow Others to Join. If that option is not available, check with your carrier about hotspot support.
  2. Connect over Wi-Fi: On the other device, open its Wi-Fi settings, select the iPhone’s name, and enter the hotspot password if prompted. Apple’s setup guidance says Wi-Fi and Bluetooth should be enabled and devices should be within 30 feet (10 meters); that is a stated setup condition, not a guaranteed range in every environment.
  3. Connect over Bluetooth: Pair the computer and iPhone, then select the iPhone as the computer’s network connection. Follow the operating system’s prompts if it asks you to confirm the connection.
  4. Connect over USB: Use a data-capable cable with connectors that fit both the iPhone and computer, then select the iPhone’s connection on the computer if prompted. Windows computers need Apple Devices or iTunes installed. You do not need a cable for Wi-Fi hotspot connections.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB: which hotspot link should you use?

These are different ways to link the client device to the iPhone; all use the iPhone’s cellular connection for internet access.

Connection method What to know
Wi-Fi Connect from the other device’s Wi-Fi settings using the hotspot password, unless eligible Apple-device account or Family Sharing access applies.
Bluetooth An alternative Apple documents for connecting computers; pair the devices and select the iPhone’s network connection.
USB For computers, use a cable that fits both devices. Windows requires Apple Devices or iTunes. A cable is not needed for a wireless hotspot connection.

Apple’s setup guidance recommends Wi-Fi and Bluetooth be enabled and devices remain within 30 feet (10 meters). Treat this as the documented setup condition, not a coverage guarantee for every location.

Understand hotspot security and Maximize Compatibility

Apple says Personal Hotspot uses WPA2/WPA3 Personal by default. Its platform-security documentation also says Apple devices generate a secure, random default password for access-point modes such as Personal Hotspot. Keep the password private and use the default setting unless a client cannot connect.

Vast H1 4G LTE MiFi Mobile WiFi Hotspot Router - GSM Unlocked for T-Mobile and Global Carriers
  • Provides fast and stable internet access using LTE network technology.
  • Works on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for better range and improved performance.
  • Compatible with multiple carriers offering LTE SIM cards (carrier compatibility may vary).
  • Allows wired connection of up to 10 devices, ideal for home or office.
  • User-friendly setup makes it ideal for home, small office, or travel use.

If a device will not join, try Settings > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compatibility on supported iPhones. Apple says this changes the hotspot to 2.4 GHz and WPA2 Personal, disabling 5 GHz and, where available, 6 GHz. It can help with some compatibility problems, but it is not a general performance upgrade: Apple warns that enabling it might reduce performance and Wi-Fi security for connected devices. Turn it off again if the device connects without it.

Keep cellular data and battery use in mind

Connected devices send their internet traffic through the iPhone’s cellular connection, so hotspot activity uses cellular data. Apple advises turning Personal Hotspot off when it is not needed to help avoid unnecessary data charges. If the hotspot remains on, a computer may connect when the iPhone is plugged in to charge. Apple also says connected devices automatically disconnect when the hotspot is not being used to save battery; it does not provide a numeric battery-life comparison with ordinary Wi-Fi.
